Matthew nodded numbly. "Yes.... I'm glad that my baby was what he wanted," he said slowly.

Alice looked up at him. "You don't love her."

He looked at her with a frown. "As you said...it is hard not to," he whispered.

Her eyes narrowed. "So now you suddenly love her?"

"She...is my child," he said. He knew that this couldn't and wouldn't end well. "You said that you wanted to wait until I saw her, to hold her in my arms...well, I have...."

"She's not your child anymore," she snapped. "You didn't want her."

"I know; and I realize now that was a mistake."

"You made a mistake?" She shook her head. "Just...I don't want to talk about this right now..." She looked down at Alison. "Whatever you have to get out of me, get it out and we should clean her up."

He reached out and stroked Alison's hair, smiling briefly before moving to her. "Spread and lift your legs up," he instructed. He knew she would be tender down there, so he was gentle as he fixed her and cleaned her. He took a shot and pushed it into her arm to help her with the pain. "Hand her here and I'll clean her up."

Alice held Alison protectively. She wasn't ready to give her to anyone at the moment...but she did need cleaning...and so did Alice. Reluctantly, after what seemed like forever, Alice passed the baby to Matthew. Grabbing the bed, her wobbly, unstable legs stood so she could go to the bathroom and wash off a bit. "I wish Sammy would hurry up," she groaned.

"With that traffic it will take a while," he said, staring down at the sleeping child in his arms. He was so entranced by her until he realized Alice was up. "Get to bed," he ordered sternly. "You're not to be walking. I'll wash you after I wash her." He stood his ground, nodding to the bed. He wasn't going to let her push herself and get hurt.

Alice looked down at herself. "But I'm all icky," she pouted. Slowly, she sat back down on the little bed though and waited for her turn. Even with the medication he gave her, she was still in a lot of pain. She wasn't bleeding too much now, but the little bed was covered in blood. Sammy's carpet still had a stain from where her water broke. She laid back, exhausted and sore, but she didn't want to sleep. She was so scared she would miss something or that Matthew would try and take Alison from her.

Matthew took Alison to the bathroom. Filling the sink with water, he took a cloth and gently began to wash her. He was so gentle and delicate, not wanting to disturb the sleeping child. Once she was all clean, he went over to the stash of baby clothes they had. He put on a diaper and wrapped her back up in a blanket. He glanced over at Alice before kissing Alison's forehead and laying her down in the crib. "Okay," he said, filling up a basin of water and taking a cloth. "Now it's your turn."

Alice stared at the crib she didn't have a good view of the baby from here. "She's too small for the crib. You have to put her in the bassinet. And put the little gloves on her so she doesn't scratch herself," she said.

"Oh.... Okay." He went back over and did as she said. He searched for the gloves, finally finding them to put on her. Once he took care of that he looked back over at Alice. "Okay, did I do it right?"

Alice nodded. "Now put her in the bassinet next to the bed. And cover her with the little blanket so she doesn't get cold," Alice said. There was so much she had yet done in preparation for the baby. She looked down at her breasts and prayed they would be up to breast feeding a month early.

He nodded, doing as she instructed once more. He moved the bassinet, making certain to keep his eyes on it before going over to her. "Okay, now let me take a look at you."

She took a moment to stare at Alison and make sure she was ok before nodding. "Alright."

He dipped the cloth in the water, being just as gentle with her as he was with Alison, he took his time cleaning her all over. Once he was through, he brought her a new gown to put on. "You might want to be careful with panties for the next few days," he instructed.

Alice nodded as he helped her changed. Once that was done, she let him help her into Sammy's bed. Alison's bassinet was only inches from her now and she could see her so perfectly. Alice tried not to yawn and tried hard to stay awake, but as soon as her head rested on the pillow, sleep came like a rock, knocking her out.

Matthew looked at her and then to Alison. Taking a deep breath, he smiled, sitting down beside Alice, he placed a hand on her, the other on the bassinet, simply watching them both sleep.

Alice's eyes shot open when Alison started screaming only a few minutes later. She sat up quickly and reached in the bassinet. "Shhh, don't cry, Alison," she said softly. "Are you hungry? Maybe sore?" She bit her lip and took a strap off her night gown. Slowly, she guided Alison until she stopped screaming and was sucking. Alice relaxed and laid back against the headboard. Man...she was so tired.

"Sleep," he told her with a smile. "I'll take care of her when she's through." He moved Alice so that she was leaning against him so he could support her.

Alice looked over at him. Pulling one of the many pillows to her, she rested it under her arm so she could relax while holding Alison. She nestled herself in Matthew's arms and yawned. It felt weird feeding Alison, but she knew she would get use to it. After a few moments, Alice was asleep once more.

Matthew kissed Alice, watching as his daughter sucked on her hungrily. He waited for her tiny lips to quit moving and her eyes to flutter closed. He lifted her away and tucked her back into her bassinet while keeping Alice propped up. Afterward he slipped her strap back over her shoulder and let her rest against him. Any minute Sammy would be there, and then he would be pushed aside...

It was an hour later when Sammy finally showed up. Alice woke to the sound of the front door slamming. Slowly she looked over at Alison to see if she would wake, but the baby was sleeping like nothing had happened. Alice yawned and turned in Matthew's arms, trying to get comfortable to go back to sleep.

Sammy hurried up to his room, as soon as he opened his mouth Matthew silenced him with a glare. "They're both asleep. If you're going to make a noise go downstairs and do it," he said with a death glare.

Sammy's mouth shut. He smiled as he walked over to Alison, he cooed softly, stroking her hair and smiling. He quickly flipped open his phone and started dialing Brian.

A handful of hours later, Alice woke again. This time, she was alone. She shot up from the bed when she noticed Alison wasn't in her bassinet. "Where is she!" she screamed, knowing it would echo through the house. All she could think about was that Matthew had done something with her and given her away to some stranger.

Sammy was the closest to her when she yelled. Pushing open her door, he pouted. "Matthew has her."

Alice's eyes hardened. "I want her back!"

"Okay, maybe since you're awake I can get her from him," he said. Walking off, he went down to Matthew's room. A few minutes later, Matthew came in, cradling Alison in his arms.

"She couldn't sleep," he explained. "She started crying a little while ago; and you needed your sleep. As long as you cradle her she sleeps well."

Alice held out her arms and smiled when Matthew placed her softly in her hands. Alice gently stroked her. "Have you held our Alison, Sammy?"

Their Alison. Matthew stiffened at that, his face hardening.

Sammy shook his head. "I wanted to, but Matthew wouldn't let me."

Alice smiled and slowly handed Alison to Sammy. "She's your daughter. You have a right to hold her."

That was all he could take. "Let me know when you are through so that I can examine my daughter," he said as he walked off back down the hallway.

Sammy cooed as he held her, watching as she stared up at him with her big eyes. "Aww! I wanted Brian to come and see her, but he's not much of a fan of little kids. That's one of the reasons he likes guys. He doesn't have to worry about kids."

Alice watched Matthew walk out. "She's not yours..." she muttered. She turned back to Sammy and patted the bed so he could sit next to her. "I never did ask Brian if he was ok with you being the father of my child."

"Matthew seems rather...protective of her," Sammy said as he sat down. Looking back to Alice, he shrugged. "He's not thrilled with it."

She rolled her eyes. "Matthew isn't an issue anymore. He's driving me nuts with all this wishy washy talk about loving and hating the baby. First he wanted it dead, then he wanted it gone, then he wanted to give up the rights, and now he's mad that I don't believe him when he says he wants to be a father to Alison. I mean...how can I believe him when he always made it so clear he didn't want her? Now suddenly he loves her and wants to be her father? How can I trust that when something happens he will still love and want her?" She shook her head. "You're Alison's father and I told him that if he wanted to be her father he needed to talk to you about it." She rested against the headboard and yawned. "Why doesn't Brian want you to be the father?"

"Well, he looks at it like this. If Matthew doesn't want his own child, why should I have to take care of it? He's afraid that the child is going to take all my time away from him."

Alice looked at him. "Alison needs a father..." she said softly. "I would think the needs of a child would outweigh the wants of a grown man."

"Yes, but his point is that Alison's real father should be her father; and that it shouldn't be my responsibility."

"Is...that how you feel?" she asked in a low voice.

"Of course not, silly. I'm glad to help out however I can." Alison shifted in Sammy's arms. Looking up at him, she began to cry.

Alice moved her strap from her gown and slowly took Alison from Sammy. Once more she guided Alison until she was sucking. "You're not helping, Sammy...you're committing. She's not a doll and she's going to grow up thinking you are her father. Maybe...you should really think this over before you take on such a responsibility. You could lose Brian because of it, and you're whole life will change now."

"I have and while I'd hate to lose Brian I can't let you take care of this baby by yourself, Alice. I'll be her father. I know the hardships involved with it, and it's okay." He smiled at her, watching as Alison sucked happily on her mother.

She smiled at him and leaned her head on his shoulder. "I don't really know what I would have done without you, Sammy..." She sighed. "Have you talked to Matthew?"

Sammy shook his head. "He's been avoiding me all day," he informed her.

She nodded. "I didn't think he would have the guts to ask you to step down as Alison's father."

"Oh, it's not that," Sammy said. "He already told me that if I fuck up I'm dead. It's just that he didn't want to hand Alison over to me."

Alice looked down at the baby. Alison tried hard to stay awake, sucking for a few seconds then stopping then starting again as if it was her last meal. "Do you think he's serious about loving her and wanting to be part of her life?"

All he could do was shrug. "If I could figure that man out he'd be my bitch by now," he sighed.

"Don't talk like that in front of the baby," she said softly. She didn't really mean it though...her mind was a million mile away. "What do you think of all this?"

"Of all what?"

"Matthew trying to be a father and everything. I mean...if he asked you...would you step down?"

"That depends on whether or not you'd want me to step down. I would never give up this baby unless you wanted me to."

"I want what's best for Alison...and I thought I knew what it was...but now...I'm not so sure."

He leaned forward and kissed her forehead. "Whatever you think is best, I'll stand beside you on it."

Her eyes met his. "Why couldn't you be straight? Then I would have just fallen in love with you instead."

He laughed and held her face. "Who knows? I think I could have fallen for you," he said with a wink.

She blushed then smiled. "See? Why couldn't you be straight?" She looked down at Alison and pulled her softly away from her chest so she could burp her. "Do you think...I should talk with Matthew?"

"I would recommend it."

She sighed and nodded. Alison burped. Hesitating, she handed Alison to Sammy. "You can watch her while I talk with him."

Sammy took her, cradling her in his arms he smiled and nodded for the door. "You know as soon as he sees you walking around he's going to put your butt back to bed. Why don't I go get him for you?"

"Ok," she said. "Really...I don't want to stand anyways..."

"That's because your no no place just got stretched to hell and back," he smirked. Standing, he held Alison to him, going down the hall to get Matthew.

Matthew fixed his glasses as he walked down to Alice's room. "Everything okay?"

"No not really," she said honestly. "I'm conflicted about letting you or Sammy father Alison."

"Conflicted? Really?" He shifted uncomfortably at the doorway. "And why is that? I thought that Sammy was the best choice..."

"You're her biological father and the man I love. I find it hard to believe that you suddenly love and want her after all the trouble you went through to cut ties from her, but my heart really really wants to believe you because she is a part of you and because I love you." She ushered him over to sit down. "If I let you...there is no changing your mind anymore. When things get tough or when she's a handful, you can't change your mind and say you don't want her or don't love her. You're committing to her for the rest of her life. She's going to be demanding and at times you're going to get really mad...but I love her...more than anything...and if I can see past all the hardship then I really think you can too."

He took a deep breath, trying to sort through all the thoughts inside his head, yet all he could do was come back to the feeling when she grabbed his thumb and looked up at him. "I understand," he said slowly. "I...want to be there for her. I want to be the one she calls daddy."

They sat in silence for a long time. She took a deep breath and reached over, taking his hand. "Then I want to get married...so I know you won't run from her."

Matthew shook his head slowly. "No," he told her. "I'm not going to marry you for that reason. If you want to get married, I want it to be because you want to be my wife. Not because you're afraid that I'm going to run away. That's just silly."

She glared harshly at him. "It's not silly when it comes to abandoning your daughter!"

"I realize that," he told her. "I have no intention of simply abandoning either of you. However, I will not enter marriage only under those pretenses. Don't you want to get married for any other reason?"

She thought a moment. He wanted a commitment on her part too. It would be like promising to only be with him forever...though...she still loved the Mad Hatter. Her eyes fell to her lap. "Can I have another shot? The pain is starting to come back," she said softly.

"I see..." He stood up and went to his bag which he'd left laying in her room. Pulling out a vial and a syringe, he filled it before going over to her and pushing the fluid in. "There you go. That should help to numb it."

She rubbed her arm lightly, still not able to look at him. "Thanks."

"I'll leave the bag and medicine in here. If you need any more I'm certain that Sammy will be able to give you the shot." Setting his stuff back into the bag, he set it on Sammy's nightstand before walking to the door.

"Matthew...if you want to be her father...you have a right to...should..." She bit her lip and finally looked at him. "Should we move back into your room?"
