Breathe Again
~Chapter 5: Insufferable Company~
Just once in my life,
I think it'd be nice,
I think it'd be nice,
Just to lose control- Just once
With all the pretty flowers in the dust
Katara's eyes fluttered open slowly, her eyes adjusted quickly to the dim lighting she grit her teeth as she attempted to force her stiff muscles to move. “Are you alright?” Katara flinched again, that voice was probably the last one she wanted to hear at this point, she glared at Zuko as he echoed his question again. She was beyond furious with the young man and she could feel her self control slipping the longer she glared at him. “I'm fine, what the hell is it to you anyway?” She growled, he frowned softly before turning his back on her and said nothing more.
He had done it; he had crossed the line that separated them as hated enemies. She could never say again that Zuko was the heartless bastard of a Prince she had always seen him as because now… She owed him her life. Now he brought confusion and pain to her already turbulent mind.
“Why…?” Katara asked in a voice not her own, the sound and the word itself seemed to almost have been spoken in an entirely different tongue. But her mouth continued where her mind would not dare to tread. “Why did you do it?!” She cried, her voice breaking slightly.
“Because… I am human.” Zuko answered bluntly as if he had been anticipating the question from her. Katara's eyes burned as the tears clouded her vision; she struck the cavern floor weakly with half clutched fists.
“I hate you all…!” She said emphasizing each word with the weak pounding of her fists; Zuko felt pain ripple through his heart. This girl had once stood strong and full of pride, but now she seemed broken, used, and tossed aside… Had he done this to her?
“Why do you hate us?” He suddenly found the words slipping out of their own accord, just like hers had moments before, he heard her gasp slightly before letting out a soft sob.
“The Fire Nation took my mother away from me…!” She cried, Zuko glanced over his shoulder at her in a mixture of sadness and surprise. “Then… That's something we have in common.” He said gently turning to face her more fully.
“W-what…?” She asked slowly, tilting her tear streaked face towards him; he rose and moved over to her slowly. He didn't want to upset her more than she already was, “My mother was taken from me about four years ago…” He said offering her his hand; she accepted it allowing him to help her to her feet.
“That's around the time my mother was killed…” She whispered, Zuko gently wiped away a tear that was slowly making its way down her cheek. “Don't cry anymore, I won't hurt you or your friends ever again, I promise… I am different…” He whispered, Katara stared at him. She could tell he was being sincere, she didn't know how or why but she could feel it. He was so warm, like his element, but surprisingly gentle… Was this the real Zuko?
The more she looked at him the more content she felt, his left side of his face was kind and handsome. Like the real Fire Nation Prince, but… The right side was twisted pained and misunderstood. She found her hand compelled to touch it, to make him real, the smooth scar tissue was much warmer than the flesh of his gentle hand had been. “Who did this to you…?”
