Ch5

It was the day that Rei was supposed to meet Kai and Rei was late.

Where is he? Kai wondered, did he decide not to come?

Kai looked around once more and then decided that he would wait for half an hour more and if he didn't come, Kai would leave.

After an hour, Kai decided to leave. After all, he stayed longer than he originally planned.

As he walked off, he heard a voice cry out, “Kai wait!”

Kai turned and saw the young Chinese boy running up to him.

“Kai,” Rei said, “Sorry I'm late. I had some chores to take care of.”

Kai nodded and said, “What do you want to do?”

Rei shrugged and Kai smiled.

“I know,” he said, “lets go take a hike in the woods.”

Rei paused, he didn't know if he could go. Rei didn't know if Olga or Katia would look for him. He didn't want to face the whips again.

“Rei?” Kai asked in concern, “Are you okay?”

“Yes,” Rei said hurriedly, “I was just thinking about something.”

Kai nodded, not convinced, but he decided to let it go.

`So,” Kai said, “Do you want too? Or would you rather stay here and do nothing?”

“Lets go hike,” Rei said smiling, “Lead the way.”

“So you're sure that we aren't going to get lost,” Rei queried apprenhisivly.

“Relax,” Kai said gruffly, “I come here all the time.”

Kai brushed a few tree branches away and then said, “We're here.”

Rei looked around and saw a lot of beautiful things. The sight was spectacular! The trees, the grass, the everything!

“So,” Kai said casually “Do you like it?”

“Yes,” Rei said quietly, “It's amazing!”

Kai smiled and thought, A lot like you. But he didn't say anything out loud. He wouldn't risk it.

“Kai,” Rei said.

Kai nodded to show that he was listening.

“Thanks.”

Kai smiled.

Kai and Rei talked for a long time, so long that they stared trusting each other. Or Rei trusted Kai more, rather.

They were out in the woods for a long time and neither Rei nor Kai noticed. They were too engrossed with each other. Then Rei looked up and saw the sun setting.

“I have to go,” he said springing to his feet, “I'm sorry.”

Rei looked around and realized that he didn't know the way back to the village.

`Which way?” he then asked, “I need to know.”

“Follow me,” Kai said quietly, “I'll take you back.”

And Kai led Rei back to the village.

Is he going to get whipped again? Kai wondered as he watched Rei enter his cottage, or is he going to be left alone?

Kai hid in some bushes and waited. Then he heard a pain filled scream and jumped up.

What were they doing to Rei?

Kai crept to the cottage and looked inside and saw a horrible sight. Rei was on the ground, bleeding while the old purple haired woman kicked him.

This was hard. What was Kai going to do? Should he use his power as the prince to order her to stop? Or should he sit here and do nothing?

Before he could make up his mind, Rei cried out, “Help!”

Akai then knew what he would do.
