CHAPTER 2: Doesn't matter how hard you try_

Tala ran down the hall of the abbey, he had been so tired that he had almost no breath left in his lungs, but he was determined to get to Kai. The keys he held so tightly in his hands were jingling as he ran down a third set of steps into a dimly lit passage with three doors on either side.
Tala- “Kai!…Kai, where are you?…”
he pounded on each door with his little bit of strength. Then he heard a faint voice that he could have sworn said his name, it came from the second door on the right. Tala fought with the keys and the door until he got it open. Kai was sitting in a boxed position. His knees against his chest, his arms on his knees and his head on his arms. He had heard Tala's voice, but just barely. Tala knelt down beside Kai on the damp floor,
Tala- “Kai, are you ok…stupid question…come on, lets get you out of here…”
Kai looked up at Tala, Tala had numerous blue and red marks on his face, as well as a cut above his eye, but this didn't seem to bother Tala in the least. Kai looked into Tala's eyes and noticed the unhidden concern.
Tala felt his anger swell inside him when he saw the blood that was coming from Kai's possibly broken nose, Kai's once pale and clear skin was now marked with cuts and bruises that seemed like they couldn't heal.
Kai- “What are you doing down here, if…if Boris sees you down here, go Tala, go now…” his voice was weak and very faint. Tala grabbed Kai and held him up so that he could stand,
Tala- “Its alright Kai, Boris knows I'm down here, he said to come and get you…his reason isn't good, but, I don't care, as long as I get you out of here and clean you up…”
Tala's voice faded, but Kai could hear that Tala was angry and might have cried at any given time. Kai now felt as though he was going to cry because of the pain that he felt he was causing Tala. Kai moved away from Tala and stood on his own, using the wall for some support, he began to walk. Tala didn't say anything, he hated the fact that Kai would never except his help, but there was nothing he could do about Kai's pride. Kai continued out of the cell and made his way to the staircase, followed silently by Tala.

EARLIER THAT DAY:
Tala had thought about going to lock himself in his room to avoid seeing Kai or any body else. The argument he had just had with Kai was still ringing in his ears. He walked in through the front entrance of the abbey and straight through the giant round room to the large oak doors on the opposite side of the room. As he closed the large doors behind him, he felt hands grab him and lift him off the ground.
Tala- “What the… hey, let me go, what are you doing?”
Boris's men took Tala down to a room on the second of five floors under the abbey. Tala saw the other Demolition Boys equally unhappy at being dragged down to the room. Tala pulled away from the guards. Brian who had been thrown on the ground, got to his feet and came to stand beside Tala, so did the others.
Tala- “What's going on Boris?” Tala voice was less than respectful, now even he was in no mood to comply with Boris.
Boris- “I know that it was you and Kai, I finally have proof…”
Tala- “Oh, and what proof is that huh? Your own word, I don't believe you can prove that it was us.”
Boris looked at Tala, he could see that Tala was already angry, and this disrespect was fuelled.
Boris- “It doesn't matter what my proof is, all that matters is that I have it…but your lucky Tala, the proof only shows that Kai was involved, not you or the other boys, so therefore, Kai will be punished accordingly. But I'm not stupid, I know that you all were involved, so I've decided a punishment for you all.” he had a very nerve wrecking look on his face.
Tala was about to speak when Brian cut him off,
Brian- “When will you be done with your revenge Boris…weeks, months, your just sick. You think that we're here for your own personal amusement huh? When will it end? WHEN…”
Brian was also completely out of line with Boris, which only made Boris get more ideas. He turned his back to the boys,
Boris- “I have been lenient with you boys, and yet some how you still manage to show no respect…your punishment will end when I see fit, oh, wait…” he turned around and smiled, “It will end when one of you is DEAD!…and remember boys, I love it when you fail…” he laughed all the way out of the room. And that's when it started, it had been two days of almost none stop beatings, but just as Boris had said, Kai was dealt with `accordingly', in other words, he had it the worst.

BACK TO THE PRESENT

The next morning was another cold and snowy day, but the coldest thing in the abbey was still Boris.
Kai stood in the shower, letting the water run over his bruised face. The steam from the heat of the water rose all around him in the shower, it was burning Kai's skin, but he just didn't seem to care. Kai placed his hands against the wall in front of him and took some water in his mouth before dropping his head forward. He spat the water out and watched as the red mixed with the water went down the drain. His nose had luckily not been broken, but it was close enough. Kai took the soap in his hand, he decided he should rather use his hands so that he wouldn't hurt himself too much. He rolled the soap around in his hands for a while
until it became thick and white. Then he let a little water into his hands and began the pain full process of bathing himself. His skin was marked, and he had many thin cuts spread over his back. His once pale and clear skin now seemed hard and destroyed, and so did Kai.

Tala was already up for along time, he never really got to sleep after he left Kai in his room, he simply showered and changed. He hadn't stopped thinking about the blood that covered Kai's face, the bloodstains on his scarf and clothes. He now felt that he knew how Kai must have felt seeing him bleeding to death. Tala heard his bedroom door open, and inside came two of Boris's men, it was a new day…and a different torture for every new day.

Boris stood, wrapped in a warm coat as the snow continued to fall on his shoulders, his evil façade never changing. The five boys stood at attention in front of him, well, it was more of a slouch, each of them looked as though they had been through a war, and yet still, Kai stood taller than the others did, his pride still strong. They all watched Boris intently, waiting to hear what he had thought of this time. The snow started falling even harder as they stood in the abbey's back yard. Finally Boris spoke,
Boris- “Its such a beautiful day boys, the ground is whiter than ever before, and winter is at its best…its such a pity…” he trailed off. Then out of nowhere came a new, more twisted grin, “Well, what are you waiting for, remove your clothing, I want to see you in nothing but your boxers…NOW!”
Ian- “Are you crazy? Its below zero out here, what are you trying to do?”
Boris stepped forward and backhanded Ian, the sound would have echoed had they been inside the abbey.
Boris- “Don't backchat me boy, do as I say and this should be a relatively painless process,
Now, I'm still waiting…” he looked at all of them.
Ian began to unzip his jacket first, followed by Spencer. Only once Spencer had removed his shirt, did Brian start to undress. Tala came after that, followed by Kai, who did so at a very slow pace.
Each of them stood only in their boxer shorts, the cold only making itself more present with every passing second.
Boris- “The temperature is said to fall to minus sixteen degrees by five o clock tonight, I'll see you at ten, good morning boys…” and he walked inside, leaving three of his guards to watch the boys.

ELEVEN O CLOCK THAT EVENING:

Tala- “Ian…Ian, wake up, come on m…man, you've got to wake up Ian, you cant…just,
come on Ian, wake up…”
Kai- “Here, give this to him, make him drink it…just try to get it down his throat…”
Tala held Ian's head up, with the help of Brian he managed to get little bits of the hot drink down Ian's throat. Ian's lips were returning to a more natural colour with the passing minutes that his friends nursed him back to health. Boris had left him out longer than the others because of his show of disrespect to Boris.
Kai- “He'll be fine now, just let him get some rest…”
The five of them were huddled in a sort of circle around a fire in the common room of the abbey. Tala sat on the floor against the brick wall around the fireplace. Kai sat in a single couch opposite the fire, Brian on the floor against the double couch, Spencer on the double couch, and Ian lay on the other double couch, half a sleep, and half unconscious. Each of them had their own blanket. They all looked as though they would fall over then and there.
Spencer's coughing was becoming worse, to the point where he ran to the bathroom and discovered that he was coughing up blood. Kai couldn't feel his nose, and every single injury on his body seemed a hundred times worse than before. Tala was also feeling his body breaking down, but his head was his biggest problem, he had a headache that just didn't seem natural, although it probably wasn't. Brian never showed any kind of weakness on his body or face, but you could see it in his eye's, he felt as broken as every one else looked.
Spencer- “So what now…”
Tala- “What do you mean `what now', what do you think happens now you idiot!”
Kai- “Shut up Tala, you have no right to start taking you're anger out on anyone, we have to do something, before one of us dies.”
Spencer- “You got any ideas Kai?”
Tala- “ Your both being absolutely ridiculous, you don't want to stay here and get killed, what are you going to do, you'll either die trying to get passed the security outside the abbey, or you'll die from the snow that'll kill you…your both stupid…ridiculous…”
Kai- “Why don't you SHUT UP TALA, if you want to sit and wallow in your own self pity then do that, but do it quietly!”
Tala- “Or what Kai, your gonna beat me up? HUH? Why don't you try it, you think it could be any fucking worse than now, because I really doubt that!”
Kai- “ I swear Tala, if you don't…”
Brian- “SHUT UP, ALL OF YOU…goddamn…what is wrong with all of you, we don't have time to argue right now. We will die arguing at this rate. Tala and Kai, please deal with your personal problems once we know that we are going to live!
Tala- “What personal problems?”
Brian- “We all know that you and Kai are fighting, you were screaming really loud on the roof that day…besides, you guys don't normally disagree unless your fighting…”
Kai- “God, I feel so useless, I hate this feeling, its so messed up… I have to do something, I can't let Boris do this to us!”
Spencer- “Let it go Kai…this is our fate, until Boris decides otherwise.
Tala- “Yeah, our fate is death…”
Kai- “At least one of our fates…”

It was three-o clock in the morning when Kai woke up. He had heard voices from outside the common room. The boys had all fallen a sleep in the common room because they somehow felt safer being in one room together. He stood up slowly, not only because he didn't want to make a noise, but also because he was afraid that if he stood too fast his legs would give way underneath him. He walked slowly toward the door, and without going right up against it, he leaned closer. He could make out two voices, one belonged to Boris, that one was easy, but the other was a little less simple. So he gave up trying to make out the voice and paid closer attention to the conversation.
Boris- “He refuses to die, I could have sworn he was weaker than the rest of them, he certainly looked like he was, he never came across as the strongest member of the team, so quiet, and he never leaves much to chance…but his holding on.”
Anon- “Damn it, why won't he die! I cant believe that pest is actually surviving…but it doesn't matter, all I know is that I'm paying you very well to do this Boris, so at the end of it all…I expect to see nothing of him but a corpse, do I make myself clear.”
Boris- “Unbelievably clear…he shall get what's coming to him.”
Anon- “Of course, if he doesn't…I won't hesitate to go straight to the police with your little secrets that are going on in this abbey. Good evening Boris.
Boris- Yes…mmmm…mnnn…”
Kai heard footsteps walk away, probably the stranger leaving, and of course then he heard Boris mumbling to himself along with footsteps. So there was someone that could get to Boris… `What the hell where they talking about? What pest did that man want dead, and why would someone want anyone of us dead, well, besides Boris. But this isn't good, that means that one of us really is going to die…but which one?'
Kai didn't go back to sleep; he sat staring into the fire,
`Ian, Tala and myself are the only one's that could be considered weak, but then again, Spencer could be considered weak because he isn't the brightest of us…and then there's Brian, who's not physically weak, but emotionally his a wreck. He lets no one in, and never…leaves…anything…to chance? Brian? Could it be…'
