CHAPTER 4: Time is a valuable thing_

Tala woke up before Kai the next morning. The two of them had been asleep on the carpeted floor of Tala's room. He looked at Kai, who had dry tear marks all over his cheeks, but Tala couldn't believe that through all of Kai's pain, he managed to look so peaceful when he slept. For the briefest moment before Tala got to his feet, he had wondered whether he himself looked as peaceful as Kai when he slept, but he suddenly realised that he didn't care how he looked, only how horrible he felt at that moment. He crouched down beside Kai and shook him gently,
Tala- “Kai, wake up. Its morning, we should eat something before Boris comes looking for us.”
Kai opened his eyes and looked up at Tala. Sitting up he looked as though he was thinking about something.
Kai- “We can escape…I know a way.”
Tala could have sworn he would slap Kai at that moment but somehow didn't have the strength to,
Tala- “Are you mad…that's what got us into this in the first place Kai, trying to escape.”
Kai- “What's the time Tala?” Kai ignored Tala's words.
Tala looked at the clock that hung on his bedroom wall.
Tala- “ Its just past 4:30, why?”
Kai- “So it still dark outside?”
Tala- “Yes, yes it is.”
Kai- “What time will Boris get up?”
Tala- “If he isn't already, no later than five, but why?”
Kai- “Listen to me Tala,” Kai grabbed Tala by his shoulders, “We're getting out of here, we have enough time to grab some warm clothes and some food. We should also clean ourselves up so we aren't too noticeable…then we go, it only lights up round' six, we have enough…”
Tala- “No…no way Kai. Its too dangerous, I'm not going, I won't be responsible for your death, and you won't be responsible for mine. No.”
Tala was extremely calm in his words, and he looked really serious about his decision. Tala stood up and walked into his bathroom. He switched on the water in the shower and went back out into the room. He watched Kai move around the room in stealth mode, he had a bag on the bed and was loading jackets and other clothes of Tala's into the bag.
Tala- “Kai, what are you doing? I told you I'm not going any where.”
Kai looked at Tala and then walked up to him quite fast. Grabbing Tala by the collar of his jacket, Kai let his anger set,
Kai- “I haven't given you a choice, your coming whether you want to or not. Now we could do this the harder way if you want Tala?”
Kai looked as though he would snap at any minute, Tala sensing this, he just shook his head,
Tala- “Its fine, I'll go with you Kai.”
Kai- “Good choice. Now get cleaned up, I'll be back here in about five minutes, I'm going to my room to get some clothes and food. When I get back Tala, we are going.”
Tala- “But what about Brian and Ian? We can't just leave them Kai?”
Kai- “I've thought about it already Tala, Brian and Ian won't leave with us.”
Tala- “Why?”
Kai- “Because they'll see it exactly the way you do, as another mistake.”
Kai ran out of the room before Tala could say another word. Tala was confused, Kai was right about Brian and Ian, he knew that. But it still didn't feel right. He pushed the thought out of his mind and went into the bathroom to clean up as quickly as possible.

Kai had made it to his room undetected by anyone. He grabbed a bag out of his closet and started packing his own clothing. He then went over to a picture that he had hung in the centre of his bedroom wall. He took it off the wall and placed it on the bed. Pushing a small stand into place under where the painting was hung, he got on top of the stand and removed two bricks from the wall. He reached inside and started pulling out candy bars and energy bars as well as potato chips, bottled water and other junk foods. Kai never ate this kind of foods often, so most of it he kept for a rainy day. He packed it all into his bag and then he washed his face and brushed his teeth. Once he finished he grabbed the bag and bolted out of the room, never looking back.

Tala had just finished cleaning up when Kai ran into his room,
Kai- “We've got five minutes before five. Chances are, Boris is already up, but not out yet. So lets move.”
Tala grabbed his bag that Kai had packed for him and rushed out of the door behind Kai. They moved fast but quietly along the passages. Then, Kai slowed his walk as they came to the largest window in the abbey. It was the window between the two stairways that lead to the top of the tower.
Tala- “Boris has camera's every where Kai, if they haven't already seen us, then they'll see us now!”
Kai- “ No, the camera's along these passages where put out of commission because Boris brings kids up here to Worik for, uh, torturing. So we haven't been seen. Getting over the fence will be harder though, but we know where the camera's are Tala, we can make it.”
Kai opened the large window, the cold morning air knocking him back. It was probably quite a few degree's below zero, and the two of them both weren't dressed very warm.
Tala looked at Kai suspiciously as Kai checked out the window for anyone,
Kai- “Alright, its clear, lets move.” he looked at Tala who was still watching him, “Well, go first Tala, hurry up.”
Tala didn't say anything to Kai. He gripped his bag firmly on his shoulder and leapt out of the window, again landing in the snow without a sound. Kai looked back to check if anyone had seen them. When he saw no one, he jumped out of the window landing equally soundless on the ground below. Tala was looking around the abbey's yard for any one who may have been there.
Kai- “Well, we made it out of the abbey, now we have to do the hard part…get past the camera's.”
Tala- “You sound worried Kai, is that bad.”
Kai- “Don't be cynical Tala, this is not the time.”
Kai started walking slowly, making sure he avoided every camera, Tala following his steps exactly. The cold wind forced them to move slowly, so they took their time.
Tala noticed that Kai was still limping, but Kai didn't seem to care. As the got nearer to the end of the yard, the snow on the ground became deeper. Tala noticed again that Kai was struggling with his legs. He watched as Kai lifted his right leg to step forward, but seeing the strain on Kai's face, Tala knew Kai would fall. He jumped forward and grabbed Kai so that they fell backwards. Kai sat up, Tala behind him.
Kai- “You saved our lives Tala, we just missed being in range of the camera. If I had fallen, I would have got us both killed.”
Tala- “Shut up Kai, we don't have time to complain, we're getting out of this god forsaken place.”
Kai was shocked at Tala's sudden burst of enthusiasm, but he didn't take long to get to his feet and make his way to the fence, Tala behind him. They reached the eight-foot fence that surrounded the Balvoc Abbey. They were on the side of the Abbey, were it was harder to be seen because of the trees.
Kai- “So now we scale the fence…”
Tala- “You make it sound so easy Kai.”
Kai- “What did I say about being cynical!” he gave Tala a disapproving look.
Tala- “Sorry, it's just really hard to be positive right now.”
Kai- “Get over it, we have to move.”
Tala had also heard the entrance doors opening. Kai looked at his watch,
Kai- “Its five- fifteen. Boris must have looked for us by now. We have to get going.”
Tala- “Right!”
The two sixteen-year-olds scaled the fence as though it was childs play, Kai suffering minor difficulties with his legs. Once they were over they sat in the snow for a while. The single road in front of the abbey was silent, not a car, not a person, that was how it always was. The two boys were just about to move again when they heard voices on the other side of the fence where they had just been.
Voice 1: “Are these footprints?”
Voice 2: “Yes, that they are. Those little runts scaled the fence. We'll never find em', they could have left in the middle of the night for all we know!”
Voice 1: “So what do we tell Boris?”
Voice 2: “…That we'll start searching right away.”
Voice 1: “Good idea man, don't wanna tick him off. Lets go.”
The guard's footprints became faint. Tala and Kai both took a breath once the men were gone.
Tala- “They think we left last night, it's perfect, we'll just find a place to hide out until they lose interest.”
Kai- “No, they won't lose interest, Boris will never let them. He'll make finding us his priority. So we run…far away until even we don't know where we are, that's the only way…”
Tala only nodded before they stood up and started running into the forest on the other side of the street.

It had been several hours since they had left the abbey. They had been walking non-stop through the forest, their faces red from the cold. They were use to the cold, but being stuck out in the snow with nowhere to go just made it that much colder. Kai looked at his watch as they came to a steep bank where the trees spread out over a field of white.
Kai- “Its already five minutes to noon Tala, I think we should rest a little while.” he turned around when Tala didn't say anything.
Kai's heart skipped a beat when he didn't see Tala behind him. The snow was hard to see through, but Tala was extremely visible in his orange and blue suit. Kai strained his burning eyes. He didn't want to scream in case any of Boris's goons had been trying to follow them.
He started walking back slowly, looking at the ground to see if he could make out Tala's size five footprints. But the snow made it impossible, any tracks that Kai himself had made were already gone. He felt the panic set in, he realised that anything could have happened in the time that they had walked across the forest,
`…Wolves…snow holes…he could have passed out…' Kai's mind went off into a maddening frenzy of thoughts, `What was the point of saving him if I was just going to get him killed anyway…' a wave of depression fell over Kai at the thought of Tala lying dead somewhere in the forest.
Kai sat down in the cold snow,
Kai- * “If I killed Tala, then I may as well die too…” * he whispered to himself as the icy cold feeling of the snow crept into his legs.
Tala- “What are you doing you idiot, are you trying to freeze to death? Get up…”
Kai- “Tala? WHERE DID YOU GO?” he stood up.
Tala- “Keep your voice down Kai, I saw a kind of cave when we were coming through the forest, so I went to check it out. Its alright, we should be warm if we seal off the entrance and maybe start a small fire, there's also an opening in the top of the cave for air. Its perfect for the night…” he looked at Kai's angry but shocked expression, “What's wrong?”
Kai- “Are you looking for a reason for me to kill myself, because if you are, then here's a news flash Tala…you are a reason. I thought something happened to you…I was about to give up. If you go off again I swear I'll…”
Tala- “I'm sorry Kai, I just wanted a place for you to rest. Your legs are giving you hell…and don't tell me it isn't. I don't want to loose you out here to something so stupid. I'm just trying alright.”
Kai- “Don't try…not without me. I brought you out here. Anything that happens to you, anything. I will be responsible! So just…lets just do this together.”
Tala- “…Okay, you're right, it was stupid, now come on, lets get you to the cave so you can rest.”
Tala lead Kai to the cave, he wanted to help Kai, but Kai refused. They got to the cave and before long they had settled inside and used some rocks to seal off the cave as well as they could. Half of the entrance was already covered with snow. It was a small cave; the entrance was about a meter in height and just as wide. It was in the shape of a square more or less, and was quite big inside. They had lit a fire and they bits of snow that was inside the cave had melted and dried. Kai opened his bag and threw all of the junk food he had carried out onto the floor of the cave.
Tala- “Where'd you get all of this Kai?”
Kai- “When I spent those few weekends with my grandfather a while back. He gave me a credit card. I spent most of the money on spare parts for Dranzer, but when I checked the amount that still remained it was quite a bit of money. I have no use for money…”
Tala- “None of us do, we never have…”
Kai- “Yeah…anyway, so I just bought a whole lot of sweets and junk. Saw a couple of movies and I, uh, gambled too. Which was stupid because I won way more money than I had when I started…”
Tala started laughing at Kai's embarrassed expression. Kai felt stupid for winning money when he was trying to get rid of it, so he blushed.
Tala- “So what movies did you see Kai?” he opened a packet of potato chips and stared munching on it.
Kai- “Uh…I…” he blushed a darker shade of red which Tala thought was funny and tried to cover his laugh.
Tala- “What movie Kai?” he was still smiling.
Kai- “Well, there was an action movie and a…love story.”
Tala- “You watched a love story?” he started laughing again even harder this time.
Kai- “Yeah, I guess there's a first time for everything…”
Tala- “Yeah, like me seeing you blush for the first time in my life…” he became quiet.
Kai- “Hey…don't get depressed again Tala, keep laughing even if its at my expense. I haven't seen you laugh that hard since we were ten and you saw milk leak out of Brian's nose.” Kai smiled as Tala's face lit up with laughter at the thought of `milking Brian' as they used to call it.
Tala calmed himself as he offered the chips to Kai. Kai just shook his head.
Tala- “You have to eat something Kai, we've been walking the entire day and you haven't eaten…please…” he looked at Kai with a pleading expression.
Kai- “I can't eat…I've taken medication and I don't want to mix it up cause I'm really not feeling well.”
Tala- “Is that what you were doing earlier when you were digging in your pants pockets, looking for medication?”
Kai- “Yeah…”
Tala- “What medication?”
Kai picked up a bottle of water and took the pills out of his pocket; he put two in the palm of his hand then dropped them into his mouth before drinking some water. Tala took the small container from Kai,
Tala- “LSD? Kai, this stuff is like morphine. This will make you high if you take it all the time. Is this why your not feeling well?”
Kai- “I guess, it has to be, but it helps.”
Tala- “What's it for? Your legs?”
Kai nodded and took another sip of water.
Tala- “Where did you get it from?”
Kai- “My grandfather…he, uh…could see something was wrong. And my legs kinda gave up on me in front of him, so he bandaged my ankles up and gave me medication…”
Tala was suddenly very quiet. Kai looked at him warily but left him to sit in silence. Tala closed up the chips bag and looked at Kai,
Tala- “Did Boris threaten to kill…me…if you told your grandfather?”
Kai blinked in response to Tala's unexpected question, he wasn't sure of what to say, to tell Tala that he endangered his life by telling his grandfather about the abbey could cause a problem. But Kai realised they had always been honest with each other,
Kai- “Well, he didn't threaten you in particular, but I knew what he meant by `one team mate less'…”
Tala- “But he did threaten to hurt one of us?”
Kai- “More like threaten to kill one of you…but I knew he meant you Tala. He knows how protective I am of you, he knows that's my weakness.”
Tala- “So then you didn't tell your grandfather the truth, what did you say?”
Kai- “I tried lying, said I got into a fight with Brian. That didn't work, he saw right through the lie.”
Tala- “So…”
Kai- “So I told him…the truth. And it's a miracle that he didn't believe me. I felt so guilty and so relieved at the same time…”
Tala- “Uh…what did he want to see you for in the first place?”
Tala sounded a little hurt, like he had swallowed some kind of pain that he felt when Kai admitted to telling his grandfather. Now Kai would have to tell Tala something just as bad.
Kai- “He…he wanted me to leave the abbey and work with him running Biovolt…”
Tala looked stunned at that moment, he couldn't believe Kai had been given such an opportunity.
Tala- “What…what did you say Kai?”
Kai smiled,
Kai- “I said no, I wouldn't leave you alone in a million years Tala. Life is pointless if I don't have my little brother with me.”
Tala gave a small smile and then laughed a little,
Tala- “I don't know what I'd do without you Kai, I hate it when you play `big brother', yet I feel relieved when you tell me you'll never leave me. I feel like a small child sometimes.”
Kai- “Whatever Tala, I am you're big brother, but your also my best friend, so I will always stick with you.”
Kai raised his fist and so did Tala, and they knocked their fists together as a friendly bonded gesture.
Kai tried to lean over to grab his bag that was on his side, when a sharp pain shot straight through his leg,
Kai- “Fuck…oh man, that hurt.”
Tala- “What is it Kai?”
Kai- “Its just my leg…its fine, it'll go away.”
Tala watched Kai as he pulled up his pants leg and adjusted his bandages, he noticed the cuts and bruises were slightly fresh, and that Kai's leg actually looked weak. Tala couldn't understand how a leg could look weak, but that's just what he saw when he looked at Kai's leg.
Tala- “Kai, what did happen to your legs? I know about your wrist and nose, but your legs?”
Kai pulled his pants leg back down, trying not to show the pain he was in.
Kai- “Uh, you remember I mentioned Worik when we were back at the abbey?”
Tala- “Yeah, you said that Boris took children there to be tortured…I was wondering how you knew about that…wait a second?”
Kai- “Yeah, that's how I know about it. That day you found me in the `happy place'. That morning I was taken to that guy, he is a massive guy, I swear he has muscles on his muscles. I don't know why his working for Boris…”
Tala- “Hullo, I am waiting…”
Kai- “Right, um…well, Boris told this guy that he wanted it so that I could never run away again. The next thing I knew, I was punched a couple of times in the face, kicked around and then this guy…he…uh…”
Tala- “Kai, what happened?”
Kai- “He hung me up by my feet and…started beating my legs. He used a cane, then a whip and then I passed out…thank god…”
Tala- “Shit…why didn't you tell me Kai?”
Kai smiled at Tala,
Kai- “Why, so I could see that look on your face. I hate that look, it kills me when I see you look at me like that.”
Tala- “That's not the point! Don't not tell me these things Kai, I want to help you get through it…alright?”
Kai let his smile fade as he looked at Tala's very serious face,
Kai- “Alright Tala, I won't keep things from you anymore.”

The two boys sat there in silence for a long while. Both of them wondering what the next day would have. They were both scared, but neither would ever want to say it.
Kai fell a sleep first, the fire keeping him warm as the snow continued to fall. Tala still stayed awake for a while, wanting to feel as though he would protect Kai, but he was just as exhausted and soon he fell asleep too. Before he closed his eye's he checked the time on his wristwatch,
` 8:30 PM, we should get up early…so we can get a head start…' he fell into a deep sleep.
