Beyblade Fan Fiction ❯ Out of the Shadows ❯ The Dream of a Monster ( Chapter 7 )

[ T - Teen: Not suitable for readers under 13 ]

The sunlight was blinding. It stung his eyes. Kai growled. His back hurt, his head hurt and his throat felt soar. Slowly he burst his eyes open. He was stunned, he found himself lying on the soft green grass down by the river. “Whoa, how the hell did I get out here?” he thought. He tried to remember what happened last night but it seemed like his memories had been covered under a thick surface of fog. He growled and rolled over on his side, irritated by his lack of memories. Had he fallen and hit his head? But why in God's name was he out here and not in the warehouse he usually slept in? Groaning with pain, he sat up. He was sitting not far from the bridge. On it stood a bunch of girls, giggling like madmen. “Oh great, just what I need now. A fan club”. He stood up and looked around, a bit here and there stood people, all staring at him. Giving everybody who looked at him an icy gaze, he began to walk towards the bridge, cursing over the fact that he had to cross it to get to his `home'. Figuring that if he just walked fast enough, he could sweep pass the girls without talking to them. Unfortunately, they weren't that helpful. Giggling the girls lined up like a human wall, totally blocking his way. Cursing over the narrow bridge, Kai halted in front of them.

“Aren't you Kai from the Bladebreakers?” one of the girls giggled. He gave her the iciest gaze that he could.

“No I'm the freakin' president” he muttered. Instead of shattering and let him pass, they drew closer, totally blocking his way. Feeling as sour as ever, Kai tried to keep his temper

“You really are Kai” the girl established

“Okay, yes I am. Is that what you lot wanted to hear? Now let me trough, I have better things to do” The girl smiled and asked with a sly look on her face

“Like what?” Kai was just about to snigger at her when he felt like the lightning had struck him

“What day is it and what's the time?” he asked her

“Oh, now it suits you to be nice, now when you need to know something” the girl said with an annoying look on her face. She clearly liked the fact that she had him in her grip. Kai felt his temper rise to dangerous highs. Not ever Tyson dared to drive him this far. Against his better judgement, he nodded. She smirked. “Okay, if you write me an autograph and let my friend take a picture of us. Then, I'll tell you the time” Kai growled at her, that was just more humiliation than he could take. He turned around to see if there was anyone else who could tell him the time and date. But everyone else seemed to have disappeared into thin air. With a low groan, Kai realised that he had no other choice than to let the girl get what she wanted. Swearing to himself that he would commit suicide if this ever came out, Kai posed with the girl on that damned photo. When he was done writing her that stupid autograph he asked her again.

“Now tell me the bloody time” she seemed a bit shaken about the anger in his voice

“Okay Mr. Nice guy, but it wouldn't kill you if you were a bit nicer to people. It's Thursday and it's almost 8:am.” It was worse than he could have imagined. The plane that would take them to Russia would take off at 9:am. Without any further hesitation, he forced his way pass the girls and began running as fast as he could back to his place to fetch his stuff.

The whole Bladebreakers-team sat on the plane. Well almost the whole team. Kai hadn't showed up yet and they started to feel worried. The pilot had said that he could wait for another ten minutes, but then they had to take off. Tyson preformed some sort of dance where he stood up for a few seconds before sitting down. Then he would jump up again and repeat the same procedure.

“Aargh, where is he?!” he yelled for the at least tenth -time. Max and Ray sat quiet, both of them looked very worried. Anya felt the guilt weigh heavy on her shoulders. What if he missed the plane because of her? But what could she have done? She couldn't just have let him go like that, he had found out too much. She had thought that it didn't matter, but then he'd fallen of his stump. The look of horror on his face had told her that he'd found out too much. It wouldn't be safe for her to just let him go. When she had placed him by the water she thought that he should be fine there. The sunlight would wake him and he wouldn't remember anything from the night before. But something had obviously gone wrong. Just as she got up to run and look for him, he stumbled into the aircraft.

Tyson's first thought was that it looked like Kai had slept on something very hard all night, he seemed stiff and soar. He stumbled to his seat beside Anya and sat down. The `fasten seat belt' sign light up and finally, the airplane began moving.

By her side, Kai put his seatbelt on and then he sat quiet, his eyes closed and his arms crossed. It seemed to be his standard position. Anya had since long learned that it was a defensive position. Kai's whole being seemed to be in a constant defensive position. She felt a bit scared, she had never flown before. At least not in an aircraft. She didn't understand how they would get this big heavy thing to fly. The engines roared and the plane moved faster and faster. She didn't like it at all. Without really knowing that she did it, she grabbed the armrests on her chair and squeezed them as hard as she could.

Kai turned to look at the girl by his side. Anya sat stiff in her chair. Her wide eyes stared straight into thin air and her hands squeezed her armrests. He could tell that she'd never flown before and she didn't seem to like it at all. Without knowing why he felt a little sympathy for her. What was wrong with him? He didn't like this girl very much, she made him feel strange. Vulnerable.

The flight had gone well and the Bladebreakers landed safely in Moscow. The got off the plane and went to get their bags. After that, they went outside to wait for the reservated BBA -bus to come and drive them to their hotel. Since it was summer, the air was warm and full of birdsong. They didn't have to wait long before a yellow bus came driving. They got them and their bags on it and drove off. Anya threw a gaze at the team -captain. He was sleeping calmly in his seat.

It was dark. He sat by a fire. On the opposite side sat a girl, she spoke in a strange tongue he didn't understand. Her eyes were black holes and her voice echoed in the otherwise complete silence. The fire before them seemed to change shape. It went from being nothing but a dancing flame, to something that first looked like a human shape. Its colour began to change, it became darker and darker until it was completely black. Even though the shape looked just like a human swept in a cloak, he instinctively knew that it wasn't. The shape that stood inside the fire with flames dancing around it was something else. Something much, much worse. The figure slowly rose its head up. The eyes staring out at him looked like two gates into hell. He could hear it open its mouth and the noise that came out was something he had never ever heard before. The noise rose, filled him with the deepest unimaginable fear that he had ever felt. It screamed like a thousand tortured animals, a death -sigh and the noise of nails against a blackboard at the same time. He felt his mind being drained of every sane thought, his every nightmare came true. The scream drove him to the very edge of what his mind could take. The terror and anxiety he felt ripped him apart. The blood in his veins boiled and his skin melted off until the only part of him that was left was the part that he hated and feared the most. He felt his mind drown in helplessness and he felt the pain when the creature tore his soul out. And in that moment, the last sane moment, he knew what the creature was. It was...

Kai woke up with a terrified scream. He found Max, Tyson, Ray, Kenny and Anya staring at him. They all looked concerned and a little bit frightened. He jerked a bit when he met the girls' eyes. It was her, she'd been in his dream. It was probably just a coincidence, but what if it was not? The dream had seemed, and still did, so real. Against his will, he shuddered when he looked at her.

Anya felt worried. Kais subconscious obviously remembered something from what he'd seen reflect in her gaze the night before. The way he looked at her told her that.

The hotel they would stay in was huge. Their flat lay on the highest floor. “The view is fantastic” the portiere told them with a smile. Tyson's only concern was whether they had a restaurant or not. The smiling portiere told them that the restaurant lay on the ground floor. They carried their bags to the elevators. They had to split up in two since the elevators couldn't carry their whole weight. Kai and Anya took a separate elevator. On their way up Anya asked

“Why were you late to the plane?”

“That's none of your business” Kai muttered as answer.

“Yes it is. You're out captain and besides you always demand to know why Tyson is late all the time. And I would prefer if you at least tried to be a little nice to Me.” she argued. Kai turned to her and looked her in the eye

“Okay, if you absolutely need to know I can tell you that I woke up laying on a place by the river. I don't have any memory at all of how I got there and I have a hunch that you have something to do with it.” Kai said, glaring at her. Her gaze was sad when she answered.

“I don't know what you do at night and that's not business, but I haven't deserved your accusations” She had an unmistakeable look of hurt in her eyes. Again, without knowing why, Kai felt a bit guilty

“Okay sorry then” he muttered. She felt the guilt weigh on her shoulders. “Forgive me Kai” she thought “But I have to lie to you and the others. You aren't ready for the truth yet”

“It's all right” she replied. The elevator stopped and the doors opened. They both got out and headed towards their flat. When they entered the door they found Ray and Kenny in the hallway/living room. The room had big windows that you could sit in and the floor was made of light -wood. The room had a small fireplace and a small TV. Before it stood a couch and two armchairs. It was kind of cosy. The flat had two bedrooms. One big with five beds in it, and one smaller with only one double -bed. Both Tyson and Max were laying on the big bed.

“It's unfair, you get the cosiest bed Anya. Just because you're the girl.” Tyson complained. Kai shook his head “Just like Tyson, all he cares about is food and sleep” he thought. Anya laughed. It felt good, she'd been laughing so much since she met these guys. Time would declare if they could accept her secret. Until then, she must keep it hidden.

Later that night, a lonely, slate -haired boy sat in the darkened flats window. He sat motionless and studied the sky. Or at least that seemed to be what he was doing. Kai thought about the upcoming tournament. They would certainly meet some old acquaintances. He wondered if Tala, Spencer and Bryan would be amongst them. And if they were, who would fill the two remaining spots in their team? He considered Tala his friend. Tala knew him better than Tyson, Max, Ray and Kenny did, and after all they had grown up together at the abbey. Kai didn't like thinking about the abbey. It rose some old, painful memories out of the grave. He froze when he heard a door open behind him. His first thought was that it was Ray who had awoken. He had, for some reason, troubles sleeping sometimes. But when he heard the soft light footsteps on the floor, he knew that it wasn't Ray. It was Anya.

She walked up to the boy in the window. It was Kai. “Doesn't he ever sleep?” she thought. She sat down at the opposite side of the window. She rose her gaze up to the stars in the sky. For some reason, a song she resounded in her head

Like Alice in wonderland
The dream takes you by the hand
Inside emotions that you might not feel
If by some notion, the dream was not real

The dream...
The dream...
The dream...

Watching the colours as they run
Feelings remote like the sun
Lovers can dream...
Devils can dream...
You `aint be nowhere until you have seen

The dream... the dream... the dream...

Her father sang it for her once when she was little. She remembered her father as a man who was nice to every one. He wouldn't hurt a fly. She felt sad when she thought of her father. She hadn't seen him in such a long time. Somehow she knew that her father, her mother and her brother were in a good place. A place where there was no such thing as hunger, fears, cold or darkness. Like Tir-nan-og, the land of ever youth. Her mother had named her brother after the prince named Caspian in the story of Tir-nan-og. The story tells that the prince decides to visit the world of the living. He had to ride on a big white horse, and if he fell off he would immediately age and turn into dust. When he came to earth he was terror struck when he saw how miserable the humans had it. He saw some workers that tried to roll a big stone out of a mud hole. He wanted to help but he couldn't get off his horse, so he rode up to them and bent down and began to roll the big stone with one hand. He had almost made it when his horse slipped and the prince lost his balance. He fell off the horse and landed in the mud. Before the men's eyes, prince Caspian aged to an old man and then turned to dust.
She had loved that story when she was little. But that was a long time ago, a very long time ago. But there would be no place for her there. She would never see or meet her family again, because she was cursed. There was no light where she was going, no light at all.

“Tell me what you see Kai” she said to the boy sitting next to her. He jerked a bit, like he had forgotten that she sat there with him.

“What do you mean?” he asked, not at all sounding like his normal, bitter self.

“When you look out the window” she replied him calmly

“I don't know, the stars I guess” he answered, sounding a bit confused. She always seemed to ask odd questions. She turned to face him and he could see that same old sadness in her eyes.

“Is that all?” she asked. He nodded. Now he was very confused. “Then I feel a bit sorry for you. When people look out a window they usually see a world full of opportunities. When they see the stars they see a universe of mysteries and magic.” She said, gazing out in the night. “I can tell that you haven't had the easiest life, but you're still so young. There is so much of life that you haven't seen. These people are your friends and have been for a pretty long time. But you still shut them out. You rip your soul into pieces trying to tell yourself that you don't need anybody. Why are you so afraid?” He sniggered.

“I'm not afraid of anything” he said coldly. She turned her head towards him and gazed into his hard eyes.

“Aren't you? Then why are you so afraid to open up for your friends? Why are you then so afraid to show emotions? I'll tell you why Kai. You're afraid of being betrayed, hurt and deserted. I don't know what those people at the abbey did to you, but I hope for your sake that it's not too late to repair the damage that they caused. Because you, just like me have been betrayed, beaten and left to grow hate in loneliness.” With those words Anya rose up and walked to the door out of the flat. She opened it and disappeared out in the corridor. Kai was left alone, sitting in the big window. How could she possibly know about the abbey? At first, he rejected her statement, but then he thought about it. Was she right? Was he afraid? What had she meant when she said that she had been betrayed? Maybe he'd always known that he suppressed his feelings... But then he sniggered. She thought she knew him. She should just know how wrong she was. She had no idea.

And so he sat alone in the window. The whole night he sat there, wondering about the mystery named Anya. She still frightened him a bit, no matter how painful it was for him to admit it, he just couldn't deny it. Where had she gone by the way?
