Chapter 7
School started up, as normal, on Monday. Sakura smiled at Yukito and talked to Tomoyo, and watched Syaoran come to class. Everything was just fine…
None of his actions, not an expression, would betray how deeply he had been hurt…
“Class? We have a new transfer student. Let us give a warm welcome to Eriol Hiirigizawa.” Tereda-sensei spoke at the beginning of class. The door opened, admitting a boy with dark hair and glasses. He smiled warmly at Sakura, and by extension, Syaoran, who was sitting behind her.
Syaoran was too engrossed in his desk to notice. True, there was nothing special about the desk, but he needed an anchor for his thoughts.
It was over… everything was over…
At lunch, he was in a tree watching Sakura, when he overheard their conversation about teddy bears.
So one stitched a teddy bear for the one you liked and then… if they named it after you, they returned your love?
Maybe it was superstition, but he was desperate enough to try, so he tagged along after Sakura and the others when they went shopping that afternoon.
He didn't trust Hiirigizawa… something seemed off…
However, nothing would change his resolve. Hiding here in Japan would solve nothing. He knew what had to be done.
First, though, he had to finish his bear and give it to the one he loved…
He was doing his mathematics homework when his cell phone rang. Tomoyo. “What is it?”
“Sakura said she felt Clow's aura.”
So now he had to jump at her beck and call? Perhaps that reasoning was a bit cruel, but he could not help feeling jealous… Yue was hers now…
Well, it did not matter too much. He would help out. It mattered not in any case. “I'm coming.”
His green robes were hopelessly bloodstained, so he opted for a different robe, white with silver moons sparkling over the sleeves…
He had never worn it before in Tomoeda, but it mattered not. He slipped on the pants, boots, undershirt… all white, of course, and then grabbed his sword and some ofudas, taking off in the direction of the aura.
Of course he felt it - it was rather distinct warm and welcoming, almost, but with a darker tone underneath….
The sea serpent lurks beneath the surface…
“Oh!” Tomoyo looked excited as Syaoran climbed up the fire escape to the building Sakura was standing on “That looks good on you, Li-kun!”
Sakura blinked, taking in his different attire. “Yes, it does…” However, a prickle of unease reminded her that something was not right… “Demo, why aren't you wearing your ceremonial robes?”
“I just felt like a change.” He lied.
“That's wonderful! You should have told me! I could have made you something!”
He backed away from an overexcited Tomoyo. What was she thinking? Well…. he truly did not want to know…
And something finally happened. The skies opened and a rain began to fall… hard prickling, rain… this was not normal rain; it felt like her was being stabbed with a thousand needles!
“Watery!” Sakura called, striking the card with her new staff, her star staff surmounted with tiny angel wings. However, to the surprise of all gathered, the card did not change.
In fact, it did not even activate. It stayed cold dull, and cloudy…
What in Clow's name was going on?
Sakura was the Card Mistress, wasn't she? Why weren't the Clow cards obeying her? Something was drastically wrong here…
Cerberus looked as shocked as he leapt over to Sakura, shielding her from the resulting blast of rain.
“Sakura! We're going home now!”
“But…!”
“Look, there must be some reason! I'll speak to Yue tomorrow!” Cerberus shouted. “It's too dangerous to stay out here!”
Sakura finally agreed, as she climbed on Cerberus's back along with Tomoyo and they flew off the building…
Syaoran returned to his apartment, having stowed his grapping hook and rope. He hadn't used them since the Time card…
Well, no matter… whatever this new evil was, it was none of his concern, right? After all, he had already lost… everything, really.
No cards… no love… and if he went home, death awaited failure…
He dreamed…
It was cold, and windy, and he stood atop Tokyo tower…
Why was he dreaming this? Sakura had foretelling dreams, not him… he hadn't even been able to see where love would lead…
He felt betrayed. Not at the Final Judgment - he'd known he would lose, but at what happened after…
So our love really was just a game to you, Yue…
He caught a flash of silver, a flash of white… Yue? What was Yue doing in his dream? It didn't make sense…
Something lashed out at him, and he blocked, only then noticing…
His sword - the hilt had changed, now a silver crescent moon surmounted by feathered wings curled up the blade, halfway…
What in the world?
He woke up with an odd feeling. Maybe… maybe it was better this way…
He was still a child after all, despite his appearance, and illusion still kept the others from seeing how he really looked…
It hurt. It hurt but there was nothing more to be done. He may as well accept it. It seemed it was his lot in life never to have love.
His family only saw him as clan head. They offered training and magic techniques and fighting skill and knowledge, but no love.
Meiling… so was too obsessed with the idea of marrying him to be a true friend.
Sakura? She was his rival for the cards after all, and in other cases, simply an acquaintance…
No, really… he would be fine alone. He'd stay a bit longer, see if he was needed, and then return home and end this miserable farce once and for all.
That was all…
Syaoran sighed and went back to sleep. Tomorrow was another day…
