Chapter 2 To Meet or Not to Meet? That is the Question
Eriol sat up in bed. It was 2:00 am. Usually, he'd sleep around midnight and wake up at 3 am, but for some odd reason, he couldn't sleep another hour. Something bothered him. Back at the park yesterday, he could've sworn he saw her, the one person he dreaded to see more than any other living or dead person. Tomoyo-chan...I wonder what she's doing right now? I wonder if she even remembers me? Eriol flipped the bed covers over and walked out of his bedroom into the bathroom. "It couldn't have been her...it's just way too impossible..."
Splashing water onto his face, Eriol stared at his reflection wearily in the mirror. Was this the right path? Did I make the right decision? And if I did, why do I feel so horrible deep inside? He reached into the top drawer and pulled out a pair of glasses. "I might as well go for a walk. School doesn't begin for another seven hours..."
~*~*~*~*~*Tomoyo~*~*~*~*~*
Over the small bridge that connected the two land from the raging river, Tomoyo looked down upon her reflection sadly. First I lost Eriol-kun...and then he disappeared too...I wasn't even able to make up my mind yet. She turned away, disgusted and angered at the reflection. Why did I bother coming here anyway?! Eriol-kun left me because he doesn't even care about me. That'll be the only reasonable explanation! And if he did care for me, even a little still, what am I supposed to say to him if I ever get to see him?! Tears slowly began to stream down her pale face. Takeru-kun...
Tomoyo looked up towards the heavens above and shut her eyes, to stop the tears. What am I to do? My heart is crying for help...Sakura-chan! Syaoran-kun! What do I do?
From not too far, Eriol approached the very same bridge. "Man, it's been two years already and Nakuru hasn't even contacted me yet! I wonder how she's doing with Yukito-chan...?" He smiled faintly, remembering one of his closest friends...Nakuru, telling him how she wouldn't let a day go by without talking to him. And now look, it's been two full years. "I wonder how Tomoyo's doing now... I wonder if she ever thinks about me too... I bet she's happily married with Takeru. I'm happy for them...maybe I should go visit sometime this month," Eriol whispered quietly. He chuckled silently to himself, though deep inside, he felt more lonely than ever. Why do I keep lying to myself? He came to a stop at the bridge, but without even looking up, he decided to continue going forward, since it was the way to the park. I'm the biggest fool ever. He let out a slightly loud sigh and continued to walk forward, leaving the bridge, which was to his right.
Tomoyo adverted her gaze from the sky to where she thought she heard someone mumble quietly. "Eh? I wonder who that was..." She continued her gaze forward until it found the fading back of the blue haired man she saw earlier that day on the field. "Eriol-kun?" She was just about to go after him when something hit her. What am I going to say to him? When she looked up once again, he was completely gone from her sight. Not a single trace of his presence remained. Eriol-kun... She let out a sigh and headed back to the hotel in which she was staying in.

"Why is life so cruel?" whispered Eriol as his eyes began to fill with tears. Suddenly, he stopped and turned to his left, which was the walkway of the park, leading to the soccer fields. Maybe I might just visit them...
Walking down the darkened pathway silently, Eriol stopped as the tips of his shoes touched the glistening green grass in the night's light. Just maybe...
He sighed once more and took a seat on the, somewhat, damp field. He looked up at the sky and smiled brightly. "The night sky is the most beautiful sight ever..." His smile grew a bit faint.
~*~*~*~*~*Flashback~*~*~*~*~*
"Eriol-kun, is something bothering you?" Tomoyo asked as she got back to her feet.
Eriol shook his head. "No, not that I know of at least."
"Eriol-kun, you can tell me anything. We used to be able to tell each other everything. Why can't you just tell me what's bothering you? I'll try to help," Tomoyo said with a frown.
Eriol turned away. "I don't want to talk about it and you possibly can't do anything to help."
"How can I? You won't even tell me what it is!? Come on, as best friends, we're supposed to be able to tell each other everything!" Tomoyo said raising her voice.
Eriol turned back to her, eyes filled with pain. "Don't you see Daidouji-san? We USED to be best friends. We used to tell each other everything on our minds! We USED to! I'm not like that anymore! I'm more independent! I don't need people to talk to!"
Tomoyo gasped. This was the first time Eriol had shouted to her ever and what made it worse was how he kept emphasizing the words used to. "Why can't we still be best friends?"
"You wouldn't understand! Besides, you have Sakura, Syaoran and Takeru to go to whenever you have a problem! You don't need me, so stop bugging me!" Eriol shouted a bit more calmly.
Tomoyo's eyes began to water. "Eriol-kun, I want to be your friend. Please! Don't run away from me! Don't you think you've done that for the past four years?!"
"You don't know what I've been through in the past four years so don't you dare say anything about it!" Eriol shouted, anger rising.
"What did I ever do to you?! That's all I want to know! What did I do to you to get you so angry?!" Tomoyo shouted back, anger and pain showing in her eyes and the tears came down.
Eriol turned away quickly, not wanting her to see him with tears in his eyes. "Gomen Daidouji-san. It seems I won't be staying for your wedding after all."
"It's not fair Eriol-kun! I don't even know what I did and now you're not coming to my wedding!" Tomoyo shouted as Eriol walked off. "Eriol-kun! You can't ignore me for the rest of your life! Eriol-kun! Why are you running away?! Why can't you just tell me?!"
~*~*~*~*~*End of Flashback~*~*~*~*~*
Eriol frowned. I can't believe it... I can't believe I said those things to her. And it was the last time I ever spoke to her too... Now she'll never forgive me...
He looked back at the empty field before him. "All these years..." Tears began to fill his eyes once more. "Tomoyo-chan...gomen..." Eriol whispered under his breath.
After a few minutes of silence, he pulled out his watch. Realizing that is was almost 3 o'clock, Eriol stood from his sitting position and dusted off his pants. "I best get going home..." He turned around and within 10 minutes, he was standing before the massive gates of his home.
His home was small, but his land was enormous. He didn't want a large home, but he wanted a lot of land for his gardens. A few feet from the gates stood at least 5 full grown plum trees with lilies and daisies surrounding the trunks of each one.
He smiled, looking at the plum trees. Reaching into his pocket, he pulled out a key and opened the gates.

Tomoyo sighed as she sat onto her bed. Eriol-kun, I want to talk to you again, but will I ever get the chance? Tears began to fill her eyes. She fell backwards onto her bed and covered her face as the tears came down. Takeru-kun... She turned to her side, staring out of the window; her vision getting more blurry every second. Takeru-kun, please guide me. You told me to follow my heart...please, I need your guidance more than ever now... She sighed once more and closed her eyes to catch some sleep.
~*~*~*~*~*Eriol~*~*~*~*~*
Coming out of the bathroom, Eriol grabbed his school bag and headed into the kitchen to eat a quick breakfast. After a five minute breakfast, he put on his shoes and jacket. With his bag hanging off one shoulder, he quickly began to jog towards his school. I wonder if there's even soccer practice today... He smiled slightly to himself.
Forgetting that it was summer vacation, he continued to jog towards the school. Coming up to the gates and finding them locked, he pondered silently to himself. "Oh yeah! How could I have forgotten?! Summer vacation!" Eriol shouted out quite loudly. Realizing that it was 3 am and everyone was most likely to be sleeping still, he slapped his hand over his mouth. "Oh well, as long as I'm up..." He walked towards the park once more. In his bag, he always carried his lucky soccer ball with him. Tomoyo had bought it for him on his 12th birthday and it had his name sewed onto it.
Coming up to the soccer fields of the park, he took out his lucky soccer ball and began kicking it around. Eriol smiled, remembering something he thought he had long forgotten.
~*~*~*~*~*Flashback~*~*~*~*~*
Thirteen year old Eriol ran towards the opposing soccer team's goal. It was his first game and his first time actually being on the team. Sure he was always good in soccer, but he never thought he was good enough to make the team, until Tomoyo forced him to at least try out to make sure of his hypothesis.
"Eriol!" shouted Syaoran, who was the team's captain. "It's all yours!" With no further instructions, he passed the ball to Eriol.
As the ball came towards him, Eriol took a step back and closed his eyes to take a quick breath.
"Come on! It's just like when we play against each other!" Syaoran shouted, knocking Eriol out of his current state.
Whipping his eyes open, Eriol lifted his feet and kicked the ball in with all of his might just before the defending team trampled him over.
"YEAH!" shouted everyone on Eriol's team as they watched the ball go into the goal just before the ending whistle was blown. They had won in the knick of time. The scores had been at 8 to 8 ever since the second quarter of the game. With Eriol's goal just now, the final score was 9 to 8, making them the winners. Everyone ran quickly to Eriol's side, including the coach and Tomoyo.
"You did it Eriol-kun!" Tomoyo shrieked joyously as she knelt down next to him.
Eriol's only reply was a ruffled yelp of pain as he tried to get up.
Tomoyo stared at him worriedly as everyone stopped their shouting of joy. "What's wrong?"
"I think my leg is broken," Eriol replied wincing as he touched his leg.
The coach squeezed through the team, as did Syaoran, and ran up to the fallen player quickly. "Hiiragizawa, come on sonny, let's take you to the infirmary." He looked up at Syaoran, who nodded. With a count to three, Syaoran and the coached picked up Eriol and walked towards the infirmary.
"Sonny, one day, I'm sure of it. You'll become a champion," the coach said reassuringly.
Eriol smiled. "Arigato."
"In high school, you'd better join the soccer team. Cause if you don't we won't win anything with only me..." Syaoran added. "I mean, we know just about any soccer play there is...not to mention all of the ones you made up yourself..."
Eriol's smile widened even more, though the pain was growing. "Of course..."
~*~*~*~*~*End of Flashback~*~*~*~*~*
"My first real soccer game...and I broke my leg already...but I owe Tomoyo-chan for making me tryout. If it wasn't for her, I would've never been able to enjoy my life as much as I did," Eriol whispered with a smile. Looking at his watch, it was now 5 am. Eriol's eyes popped open. "Eh? Five already!!" All around him, his soccer team was laughing along with Nathan. Eriol frowned. "Hey, when did you guys get here?"
Nathan signaled for the team to stop laughing, which they did immediately. "Actually, we all got here just before you said that you broke your leg on your first real soccer game..." Everyone bursted out laughing once more.
"It's not funny! I was trampled right after I made the winning goal by the opposing team!" Eriol shouted, trying to stop everyone from laughing.
After an hour's worth of warm ups, Eriol finally got the team to start they're practice. Standing next to Nathan, Eriol sighed, still in embarrassment. Nathan turned to him with a faint smile. "Hey Eriol, who's this Tomoyo-chan you talked about?"
Eriol's head shot up in surprise. "Nani?! Tomoyo-chan? She's um...we were friends when I was in Japan...yeah, childhood friends..."
"Really?" Nathan whispered in disbelief. Eriol had never even mentioned a single friend before from Japan. He never knew such a simple question as that would finally get Eriol talk about his childhood friends. "Do you miss her?"
Eriol shrugged. "I don't know..."
~*~*~*~*~*Later that day...1:00 pm~*~*~*~*~*
Nathan smiled, proud of the information he had gotten out of Eriol today. Even though Eriol only said that she was his childhood friend, he was glad he knew her name now. Coming up to the Majestic Inn, he walked up the steps and practically danced in. "Hey, Johnnie!"
In a few seconds, a younger looking man walked out. His hair too was black, but his eyes were a dark hazel. "Good morning brother. What can I do for you this morning?"
Nathan smiled. "Guess what? I finally got Eriol to give me a name of one of his childhood friends!"
"Really?!" Johnnie shouted in delight. "Man! I want to know him! So, who's his childhood friend? What's his name?"
Nathan shook his head. "Not a he, it's a she! Anyway, her name is Tomoyo...Tomoyo Daidouji."
"WHAT?!" Johnnie shouted in surprise. "We have a guest in this hotel with the exact name! It can't be her can it?"
Nathan shrugged. "I don't know...sounds kinda awkward to me...but can I get her room number? I want to make sure of it."
"I guess so," Johnnie replied, handing his a piece of paper with a number written on it.
Without further ado, Nathan danced up the stairs towards her room. Quickly coming up to the room number, he lightly knocked on the door.
Inside, Tomoyo looked up from her book. "Ne, I wonder who that could be? I didn't order room service or anything of that kind..." With a thought, she finally stood up from the couch and opened the door.
"Good morning Miss Daidouji...you are Miss Daidouji aren't you?" Nathan said with a smile.
Tomoyo nodded. "Yes I am..."
"Well, I'm Nathan Daniels. You might know me if you watch television...or you might know my friend...Eriol Hiiragizawa...?" Nathan said with a raised brow.
Tomoyo gasped. "Eriol-kun?! You know him?!"
"Of course, he and I are the coaches for that amazing soccer team you've most likely heard about," Nathan replied. "Now, would you care to join me for lunch? I'd love to know more about your relationship with Eriol."
Tomoyo hesitated for a moment. He could be lying...
"Rest assure that I am telling nothing but the truth. As a matter of fact, our team will be holding yet another practice later this afternoon. I'll be more than happy to take to there too," Nathan said, realizing what she was thinking.
Tomoyo nodded. "Okay..."
~*~*~*~*~*5:30 pm~*~*~*~*~*
"Well, it's time for us to be getting to the practice now. It starts at 6," Nathan said taking Tomoyo's hand and leading her towards the fields. "It's right over here..."
Over in the fields, Eriol was sitting on the ground as he always was. Deep in his thoughts, he didn't notice the oncoming people...Nathan and Tomoyo.
As Tomoyo and Nathan came up behind him, Tomoyo gasped. Nathan smiled. "Hey Eriol!"
Eriol jumped up quickly from the ground and turned towards them. "Nathan! I thought I said don't...." He stopped mid sentence, seeing the one face he was most worried to see.
"E...Eriol-kun..." Tomoyo whispered.
To Be Continued
