Chapter 9: A Trip Down Memory Lane

~~~
About a half an hour before everyone left Jessica's house:
After the shock of other people the little guy, and it was a guy according to Sesshoumaru, he quickly attached himself to Jessica, completely dodging Inu Yasha's attempt to grab him and put him back on the trunk. He somehow ended up on the couch and behind Jessica, growling at the offending half breed with his wet side and tail wrapped around her. So once the beast was calmed Jessica had to go back upstairs to change her shirt again while her mom cleaned up the mess the dragon had made.
The change of clothes gave Jessica time to think about a few things that were still unanswered. So once she was downstairs again, after noting that her parents were sitting at the table with Rin and Sesshoumaru looking at the different shards of the egg and that all her comic books were hopefully put away since she didn't see them anymore, she asked out of the blue, "I can understand why Sephiroth wanted to kill my dad, but what does he have against you two? And how did you manage to get me out of the labs in the first place?"
Inu Yasha blinked, he had forgotten that they hadn't explained the rest of the story yet with all the excitement going on.
"I was wondering the same thing. How did all this get started anyway?" Kagome asked, she and Koga had yet to find out what was going on other than Jessica being someone they had met over five hundred years ago.
"The day we found out about you; me, you mom, Sesshoumaru and Rin were about to go to dinner somewhere. Had to make sure I didn't kill some demon lord that was going to be visiting the area or something like that..." Kevin started, since the beginning was his part he thought he should explain.
"It was Lord Chin Yu, I was there to make sure he didn't attempt another war. Killing him would have made things worse than they were to begin with," Sesshoumaru glared at Kevin.
"As I was saying... We were just about to leave when an Angel popped up says to me 'Kevin, we are in need of your assistance...' with everyone standing there."
"Which one?" Jessica asked, all the while thinking that this story could make a really good anime.
"A minor one, Michael would have come but he was dealing the devil while we did this. Anyway, he told us that there was a child...."
~~~

"...there is a child in great need of help. While she might not be much right now, she will grow up to be of great importance to this world and the many that roam the universe."

The angel stood there, waiting for Kevin to answer him. Kevin was only nineteen, but was a deeply religious man and would do anything god willed him to do. It was the demon that he feared wouldn't help. While not of one of the fallen's warriors, he was still not of the human race, so he did not have to help if he didn't feel like it.

"How old is this child?" Sesshoumaru asked, confused that an angel would show up will he, a demon, was present. Whatever was going on, it was important if he was here.

"Only a month old. This child has been in more pain in her short days than most adult will ever feel their whole lives... Experimented on by her father in hopes of creating a human that will be able to communicate with their home world..."

"Why hasn't anyone on this other world helped? Doesn't someone know what's going on, or family that'll save her?!" Rin demanded. There was a baby in pain and she was furious that no one was stopping it.

"She was born by a surrogate mother, who was killed the moment she entered the world. Her true mother has been in a death-like sleep since her brother was born fifteen years ago..."

"And the brother...?"

"Will do nothing to stop it since this will make her like him... Such experiments were done to him before he was born, which is why his mother now sleeps in a hidden place far away. We must separate the two of them or he will corrupt her being and then there will be no saving her!"

“Why does none of the heavenly court do anything about it?” Sesshoumaru asked.

The angel paused, but answered, “That world is not under God’s protection, so technically we can do nothing about it…”

There was a silence that followed, no one person truly believing what they heard.

"Go..."

Everyone turned. Tammy, who had not said a word since her husband had tried to tell her that Sesshoumaru was a demon, had finally spoken. She didn't believe him when he said that he knew demons, but an angel was hard not to believe when it's standing right in front of you.

"There is a little girl out there that needs a home and a family that isn't completely insane, so go save her..."

Kevin looked at his wife, knew this wouldn't make up for the kid they had just lost but hopefully it would bring some light back into her eyes. He turned to the angel, who was still standing like a statue in the middle of the street, and answered, "When do I leave?"

~~~
Once Kevin and Sesshoumaru agree to help the child the angel breathed a clear sigh of relief. Apparently the lab they were keeping her in was in a tower that also housed the president of a super powerful company, so getting in would be impossible alone despite Kevin request to go in by himself.
Rin explained that she had twelve children, to which he didn't bat a single eyelash over, and wouldn't ever let something bad happen to a baby when he could stop it. After which she ended with, "Isn't that right, Sesshoumaru-sama?!" in an impossibly happy voice.
Sesshoumaru said nothing to this, only turned away from the shocked looks from Kevin and Tammy. Sesshoumaru didn't look like someone that'd have a wife, or children for that matter to Kevin. But twelve?! Where did they hide them all?!
Tammy turned to Kevin and said, "I don't care how good you are, I'm not having twelve kids!"
Kevin had no answer to that.
Once everyone finally calmed down, they returned to the hotel Rin and Sesshoumaru were staying at in San Francisco. Just in case something came through after them or something like that, which someone people were used to happening. Meeting Inu Yasha didn't go over too well; Kevin attempted to kill him after looking at him and then Tammy hit him over with an ashtray. After a quick explanation of what he was, which seemed to happen a lot, Sesshoumaru told Inu Yasha that he was going to come with them to city on the other side of the universe.
He took it well. Then they told him why they were going. Not so good. The half breed ranted about having to go that far for just one kid until Tammy threatened to bless a frying pan and beat him to death with it. That shut him up real fast.
By the time they had put there traditional clothes, which they had brought with them to wear to the meeting, the angel had returned holding a pendent in one hand.
“Use this to return once you are well away from sight and have the baby with you,” he said, handing the item to Kevin. “She will be in the labs, about sixty five* levels up from the ground. Be safe…” Which meant ‘if anything happens you’re screwed’.
~~~

Everyone should know what happened next, but let’s recap anyway. After arriving they snuck into the building using the stairs. Found J [which was Jessica’s name at the time], escaped the guards and her crazy father. And found a safe place to hide.

Everyone caught up? Good, let’s continue where that part of the story left off…

~~~
Inu Yasha turned and glared at his brother before continuing, “If she’s number two.... then who’s number one?”
“Put J down and I’ll end your lives quickly.”
Sesshoumaru looked over the half breed’s shoulder and saw a youth slowly approach them. “My guess would be him....”
Everyone turned to see a teen standing behind them, a long sword in his grip as he glared at them with malice. The number one tattoo stood out against the white of his skin as he stood in the empty corridor.
Inu Yasha stood in shock. The child standing before them couldn’t be…
“What is this child to you?” Sesshoumaru asked, fully aware who the boy was but wished to know for sure.
The teen tensed, but replied as he pointed at the little bundle in Kevin’s arms, “That is my sister… so release her or I’ll show no mercy…”
Sesshoumaru laughed, this was the same man they had met nearly five hundred years ago. He was unmistakable with her white/silver hair, though it was only down to the small of his back at the moment and his bangs barely reached the bottom of his eyes, but it was him. Sephiroth.
Inu Yasha was still in shock, considering the last time he saw him he was a hell of a lost older and it was five hundred years in the past. Inu Yasha looked over at the baby, who was looking at one of the tattoos on Kevin’s arm at the moment, and realized something. Ears flattened against his head, he muttered, “No wonder the bastard was trying to kill us…”
Kevin looked over at Sesshoumaru for an explanation, only to have him motion that he’d explain later. Pulling his sword from his sheath, Sesshoumaru stood before the boy and answered, “Your threats are meaningless… the child is coming with us before you and that bumbling scientist turn her into a monster like you.”
Sephiroth was taken aback at the comment, but rage flashed through him and he launched himself at the offending person. Sesshoumaru easily caught the attack, the boy wasn’t nearly as strong as he was going to be so his attacks were easy to read and deflect. The sounds of crashing metal upset the little baby, but she only started whimpering at the discomfort rather than crying out like most babies would have. Kevin noticed though and started moving towards the stairs, but stopped.
“Oh good, the guards have arrived…” Sephiroth huffed as he attempted to push the demon backwards so he’d have some room to use his sword.
Sesshoumaru had to admit, the boy was good. But he was only as strong as Inu Yasha and after five hundred years he still hadn’t surpassed him in power. They needed to leave; the child was going to need medical attention soon to check to see if there would be any long term damage to her other than the liquid they were pumping into her. So thinking fast he knocked the other’s weapon out of his hands in one fluid movement, where it lodged itself deep into the wall, and grabbed Sephiroth by the throat. Sephiroth was still a good six inches shorter than Sesshoumaru, so when he dragged him up to face him his feet dangled just barely off the ground.
Kevin took that as his sign to get moving, so held the small child closer to him as he ran as fast as he could to the elevator at the other end of the hall. Inu Yasha reached it first; he did not want to be someone’s experiment! So he left his brother to deal with the on coming guards while he got an elevator their floor [he would have just jumped, but they were still fifty five levels up…].
Sesshoumaru glared at Sephiroth as he struggled in his grasp, no sign of pain of in face only irritation. Deciding that a point needed to be put across he let his claws to sink in a bit, letting his poison to seep in a bit. Sephiroth’s eyes flew open at the sudden pain.
Learn your place human…” Sesshoumaru growled. He bared his fangs, eyes bleeding red. He was pissed. [Well… that and he really wanted to make sure he had a good reason for wanting to kill them…].
Sephiroth struggled in his grip, attempting to get away from the pain he was causing him. “What the hell are you?” he choked out as the hand gripping his throat got tighter.
Sesshoumaru smirked, but did not answer. Instead, he flung the boy into the approaching guards. Guns were thrown aside in attempt to catch Sephiroth, but they only seceded in falling into a great heap on the floor. Casting one last look on the group before turning swiftly to the other end of the hall. The elevator was gone; his brother didn’t even bother to wait for him.
~~~

Inu Yasha on the other hand was looking outside, the sun setting quick beyond the huge city. Kevin managed to quiet the baby once again, cooing quietly against his chest was they shot downwards. He knew Sesshoumaru could handle himself, so he was decided to worry about saving the baby first.

“They’ll be waiting for us on the first floor…” Kevin said, watching as the levels drop bellow thirty.

“When it hits ten, we’ll just stop this thing and jump out,” Inu Yasha answered, like it was the easiest answer in the world.

“Some of us won’t survive a ten story drop!” Kevin yelled back, which for some reason caused J to giggle.

The cabin suddenly lurched to one side, nearly throwing everyone into the glass. Inu Yasha grabbed for his sword as someone called out above them, “Who gave you the order to fall back?”

Relaxing slightly, he yelled back, “You looked like you had everything under control, Sesshoumaru!”

The emergency hatch opened above them and Sesshoumaru dropped in between them with a slightly miffed look on his face. As the elevator reached the fifteenth floor he slammed his fist into the buttons, causing it to jump in surprise before coming to a halt. He raised his hand and shoved it through the layers of glass, his poison eating through it. In the end there was a hole big enough for them to escape from. “We leave now. I will take the child, you’ll jump with Inu Yasha,” Sesshoumaru said to Kevin, who looked a bit pale at the height.

After a few moment of handing little J over to Sesshoumaru and wrapping her up in Kevin’s leather jacket [it was cold out there and she’d never been outside of a lab before], they were just about ready to go. But suddenly the doors above them blasted open, sending fire and glass everywhere.

Sephiroth plummeted downwards through the flames, crying out in pure fury as he drove his sword through the roof of the elevator. Using all his strength, he pulled the sword free, slicing through glass and steel in the process. In a blink of sanity he looked down to see if J had been unhurt, but there was no one here. He jumped to in the deserted room, checking to see if they had escaped to another floor. The door remained unopened. Spinning around he looked out the giant hole and saw in the dying light that all three men had somehow escaped, a long with J.

~~~
“What happened next?” Kevin was completely interested in what they were telling them. Jessica, from what he could see, was in a state of shock and hadn’t said anything in a while.
“After we managed to get away from some of the guards that came after us we used the gate that the angel gave your dad and came back here. You,” Inu Yasha said, pointing at Jessica, “were so attached to you mom since she was the first person to give you attention with out hurting you, everyone decided that it was better that you stayed with them. After awhile the brand on you neck got dark... grew a wing somehow right before you hair grew over it. Never did find out why that happened....”
Jessica was quiet for long moments, not sure what to say to the mass information that she just heard. “Why didn’t anyone say something when you came out with the game?”
Inu Yasha jumped and pointed an accusing finger at her dad, “Hey, do you know how hard it is to find you people sometimes?! We didn’t find out that you were back in Pacifica until right before you left for Tahoe, and by then you had played the game and was reading our comic!”
“The mutt’s right,” her dad agreed, ignoring the looks he got from Inu Yasha for the comment. “Hell, we had to leave anyway… turns out that there’s a natural gate between worlds down on the beach back in Pacifica and that bastard was trying to reach you through it…”
“You started blacking out every time he tried to… talk to you, I guess. It started to really concern your friends when you black out in the middle of a conversation and not know where you were when you came too,” her mom continued. “It got to the point where they started coming to us to find out what was wrong with you.”
“What’d you tell them?” Now Roxxane was interested in what they were talking about. She had had problems with Jessica’s sudden forgetfulness, and still did sometimes, and she really wanted an answer to that.
"That Jessica was stressed out from school and it was effecting her health and memory, though I think your friend Tiffany didn't believe us..., but once we got you far enough away it stopped happening so often."
"Wait, wait a minute," Jessica said suddenly. "There's a problem with you reasoning, if Sephiroth could see inside my head then why didn't he know how to beat Cloud? He said he had been watching me since before the meteor, and before we left I figured out the moment he needed to strike in order to beat Cloud, so that'd mean he would have been a god and we wouldn't be having this discussion right now."
For a moment no one said anything, the verbal spew that came from her mouth had surprised them. But it didn't last long, Roxxane decided to smack Jessica in the back of the head for having to listen to her.
"What was that for?!" she yelled, rubbing the stinging area on her head.
"For sounding smart, I've listened to you enough to know that that guy went nuts cause he was super smart. So, every time you say something overly smart I gonna hit you," Roxxane replied, fully intending to carry out her plan.
"And which moment would this had been?" Sesshoumaru asked, interested in what Jessica had to say.
Jessica blinked, unsure of what he was talking about for a moment before she remembered what they had been talking about. "If Sephiroth hadn't stood around talking about how he was going to become a god right after he kill Aeris he could have..." Jessica didn't finish, she wasn't entirely sure she wanted to finish her sentence. Now that she thought about it, she wished she hadn't said it.
Yuki noticed that she was becoming upset [or his kind of upset anyway] and threw himself at her, scaring the hell out of her in the process.
"She means that he would have been able to kill everyone and have no one to stop him," Kevin finished. He spent most of his life listening to what Jessica said, when he started playing the game Jessica took the time to explain what was happening when he didn't know what was going on [the text moved too fast sometimes and Jessica could remember was happening most of the time]. That and he remembered the argument that followed that conversation...
"Those working at Enix believe that he wasn't able to get into your mind until after he failed to destroy the world the first time. Before he wasn't strong enough to do more than find and watch you, but the power he gained afterwards was enough to grant him access to your thoughts," Sesshoumaru said, answering Jessica's original question before Inu Yasha could. "With..." for a moment he paused, "...the dragon's natural magic we hope to keep events like today from ever happening again."
He doesn't want me to know what I name him... Jessica thought, ideas for names running through her head already.
"Speaking of which," her mom said, carrying the newly dried dragon over to Jessica, chirping happily, "are you going to name him or are we just going to keep calling him 'the dragon'?"
"Yup..." Jessica took a long look at the little dragon, who was either had an itch or was trying to be affectionate by rubbing his head against her arm, and decided. "You," she said, drawing his attention to her, "are now Jay. So next time someone starts talkin' about Jay, that'll be you."
Jay seemed happy about his name, he started chirping even louder afterwards and wrapped his tail around her arm. Jessica thought it was cute anyways, so she petted his head.
"Jay? What kind of name is that for a dragon?!" Roxxane cried, not believing her sister was giving a dragon a name like that.
"Cause he looks like a blue jay!" Jessica replied. She didn't really care what anyone thought, but she new a good way to loosen everybody up. "Besides, I couldn't call him Blue since he's not an imaginary friend!"
~~~

Present:

Full of food and more tired than she ever felt before, Jessica finally laid down to good to sleep. Jay curled up on around her head, not wanting to be too far from her. Jessica didn't care. It was nice that someone needed her like that. Rolling over she winced, the punch she got earlier was beginning to hurt bad. She didn't tell anyone though. Everyone had enough to deal with without her adding to it.

So, ignoring her own pain, Jessica finally fell into a dreamless sleep. Tomorrow was going to be a long day.

~~~
And the secrets of Jessica’s origin have been revealed!
[Waits for applause, but hears crickets instead... j/k]
I'm just getting started on the next chapter for bare with me folks. And since my uncle [my dad's baby bro] died on Saturday... I might not be updating in a while. As soon as this passes I'll hopefully get back on the ball, but until then I hope you guys will wait.
