Crossover With Non-anime Series Fan Fiction ❯ Terdwilicker's Anime Reviews ❯ GATE ( Chapter 58 )

[ A - All Readers ]

GATE is an anime about Tokyo getting invaded by primitive screwheads with magic and dark ages technology, then being repelled, then Japan ignores its own constitution and invades the Empire behind this sneak attack. It is ALL the cliches. It is fun to watch, and there's some great cliche characters, and they all like the hero, Itami, who is certain that anywhere Japan invades will be welcome "because we're just coming to help" rather than slaughter the existing power structure and replace it with Japanese technology and bureaucracy. Ahem.

Every crime committed by the Empire, including sneak attack and slaughter of civilians and slavery of POWs... are crimes that Japan literally is guilty of from WW2. Every single one. Including rape. They did that. GATE is the idealized form of projection if ever there was one. It is the darkest kind of irony because the author and the people making it clearly have no idea how hypocritical they are.

Watch it, enjoy it, but understand that this is Japan being in complete denial of what absolute bastards they are when it comes to their crimes in WW2. They still pretend they were justified and no real people were harmed, because Japanese people believe they are the Chosen Ones. Does that sound familiar? Yes, yes it does. Many nations are jingoistic bastards, and Japan is one of those.
