Digimon Fan Fiction ❯ A New Generation ❯ Late Night Adventures ( Chapter 3 )

A New Generation
Disclaimer: I do NOT own Digimon! Some very fortunate person somewhere out there does! But the extra characters are mine! Touch them and you shall face my wrath!
Note: This takes part after 02, before the 25 years later, in which the ending of 02 didn't happen. This story was done by me and a friend of mine. It took lots of serious planning for the new characters [there's so many of them…] Thanks Magz… Those torturous days we spent figuring out the names of the characters will always be in my memory.
Prologue : When the Digidestined kids saved the Digital World for the second time, they thought the threat was all over and that they could live a normal life again, without the Digital Monsters. True enough, they were wrong.
Twenty three years later, the former Digidestined kids are all grown up and living peacefully. But unknown to them, evil dwells in the very shadows of the Digital World. Soon, the Digital World will be in peril once again, but are the new chosen Digidestined kids up to the challenge?
Characters: From the character's surname, I'm sure you can work out for yourself who's child is who's. Whenever a new character makes an appearance, I'll post his/her profile up in the next chapter.

Chapter 3 - Late Night Adventures
*Yagami Residence, study room*
Tai sat in one of the few chairs that stood around his study room. He yawned briefly and closed his eyes for a moment, hoping it'll ease a little of his fatigue. It's an hour pass midnight and he and a few of the former Digidestined were sitting around and doing all sorts of weird things to pass time while they wait for the kids to return from the Digital World.
It has been quite a few weeks since the incident at Ken's occurred. The ten newly chosen Digidestined had risen to aid and protect the Digital World like their parents used to do. Surprisingly, the children were excited about the whole thing, eager to live their parent's exciting childhood.
Now, they usually take turns on whose house to gather at, and tonight it happened to be the Kamiya's. Tai recalled the conversation he had with Izzy…
*Flashback*
“So what exactly is this DigiRing and DigiWatch?” Tai asked Izzy later during that night after the children returned.
“It's an even greater version of the Digivice,” Izzy answered. “The DigiRing functions as the key to opening and closing the portal, and summoning and unsummoning the Digimon.”
“Summoning?” Tai asked with a puzzled voice. He can't remember there being any summoning.
Izzy held out his son's DigiRing and DigiWatch for the other man to see. “As you can see, right now Kirua's Tentomon is in the form of data inside this watch. When he returns to the Digital World, in order to get his partner out, he summons it using his DigiRing.”
Tai nodded to show he understood so far. “So it's really important, isn't it?”
Izzy nodded gravely saying, “Losing it could mean the end. The portal won't open without it, and they won't be able to cross the portal.”
*End of flashback*
“Tai,” a distant voice called him from somewhere in the darkness surrounding him. “Tai, wake up.”
Tai slowly opened his eyes and blinked a few times to get used to the lurid lighting around him. It felt as if his eyelids weigh a ton and he struggled to keep his eyes open as he turned his head to his left and saw his wife looking at him worriedly. Managing a small smile, he nodded to assure her he was awake.
“You should just go get some sleep, Tai,” Sora insisted, although knowing how stubborn Tai can be at times. “I can wake you up when they're back.”
Tai shook his head a little and said, “I'm fine. I'll sleep later.”
Sora nodded with a sigh, knowing there's no way she can change his mind anymore. She took a seat beside him and leaned back into the chair wondering if her children were alright.
Looking around the silent study room, Tai could see what the others were doing. Ken was chatting quietly with Davis at the corner of the room. Both of them were having some kind of friendly discussion. Yolei couldn't come over because she had to take care of their other two younger children. If she was here, she'd definitely tease Davis again, Tai thought to himself with a smirk.
Joe was sleeping in an armchair not far away from the computer, snoring lightly. The doctor has had a tiring day at work so he decided to take the time to catch a few hours of sleep. Izzy, as usual, was busy monitoring the Digidestined's movements. Matt was nowhere to be seen, though… probably outside talking to his ex-wife on the phone to update her on what's going on. He's been doing so for so many times that no one really bothers where he is when he isn't around. T.K wasn't in the room either.
“Where's T.K?” Tai asked drowsily, looking at Sora questioningly, wondering where his young brother-in-law is.
“T.K's in the kitchen with Matt preparing something for the kids to eat when they get back,” Sora replied tiredly. She got up and excused herself, saying she had to help the two.
Getting off his chair lazily, Tai followed her to the kitchen to help her, hoping that by keeping himself busy he would stay awake.
*Yagami Residence, kitchen*
“You guys sure are working hard today.”
Matt and T.K looked up from what they were doing and saw Tai, who had spoken earlier, and Sora enter the kitchen. Matt scratched his cheek lightly, said hi, and returned to what he was doing. T.K smiled and handed a mug containing some kind of thick black liquid to Tai.
“Have some coffee, Tai,” T.K said, handing him the mug. “It'll help.”
“Thanks,” Tai muttered gratefully, leaning against the countertop.
“The kids are not back yet, I assume?” T.K asked, offering Sora some coffee too.
Tai nodded numbly, struggling to stay awake. He was starting to find it hard to get a proper grip on the mug in his hands. “Don't worry, Izzy's monitoring it. If anything comes up he'll call us.”
*Digital World, somewhere on the hills*
“Okay…” Shinji muttered slowly, looking at the small map displayed on his red DigiWatch's screen.
The Kido twins stared at him suspiciously. “What is it?” they both asked simultaneously.
Shinji cursed mentally. “I think we're lost, guys…” he stated, panicking slightly.
“What?!” the female Kido twin yelled, grabbing the elder Kamiya's neck. “You asked us to leave the navigating to you!”
“I know,” Shinji objected, trying to pull Masaki's grip loose. “We're back to where we came from, but the portal point is gone!”
“It appears to have been removed.”
Masaki stopped abusing the poor Kamiya and stared at the shoulder-length girl who said this. “What do you mean, Satsuki? You say someone's trying to prevent us from getting back?” she asked with a surprised voice, removing her hand from Shinji's neck.
Satsuki didn't answer. She just stared right ahead at the trees, where the portal point should have been. Mitsuru sighed and said, “Guess we'll have to find another portal point.”
Shinji sighed in relief when Masaki released her death grip on him. He checked the map on his watch and frowned. He looked up at the others. “The nearest portal point is down the hill,” he said, not wanting to exactly state how far it is.
“Down there? Weren't we there about a few hours ago?!” a purple haired girl exclaimed, staring at Shinji wide-eyed.
Shinji shrugged his shoulders. Mitsuru sighed and muttered a curse. He flipped open the cover of his DigiWatch and began pressing a few buttons. Shinji didn't even have to ask what the elder Kido twin was doing. He's sending a message to Izzy to report what happened.
Within a few seconds, Izzy replied the message. Mitsuru read it, then snapped the cover of his DigiWatch shut and looked at the other nine Digidestined. “Uncle Izzy asked us to go on ahead to the nearest portal point. The former Digidestined are on standby if there are any other problems.”
Kirua blinked his eyes in confusion. His green eyes dulled a little. “Why can't Dad come here himself?” the young Izumi asked.
Shinji, who always lead the way turned around and walked back in the direction they came from. He ruffled Kirua's already messy hair as he passed the boy saying, “Because there isn't a portal point here, Kirua.”
The young boy just stood there, finding it hard to understand. But when the others started following their leader; Shinji, he followed as well behind the group with the other two nine year olds, Toshiro and Kaito.
*Yagami Residence, kitchen*
Tai was talking to Matt when suddenly spiky haired Davis Motomiya burst in through the sliding door. “Guys, Izzy's received news from the kids. The initial portal point disappeared so they're heading off to the nearest one to them now, which is a few hours away. Izzy said everyone should standby just in case there's something serious going on there.”
“What?!” Tai exclaimed in shock, nearly knocking down a vase off the countertop as he violently slammed the mug in his hands down.
Sora panicked slightly and rushed to save the fragile vase, steadying it and pulling it away from her clumsy husband. Nothing was really safe around him any more, she mentally reminded herself. She irritably gave him an alarming glare, which went by unnoticed by the man.
Matt returned to his cooking again, irritated than he got interrupted twice so far. T.K sighed and walked off to get himself more coffee. Tai left the kitchen with Davis to talk to Izzy, his coffee left forgotten on the table. Fuming angrily, Sora decided to finish his coffee for him, grabbing the forgotten mug, claiming it hers. If things go on like this, T.K might just wipe out all the coffee in the house. That would be bad considering the situation they're in.
*Digital World, somewhere in the jungle*
“How much further is it?!” a frustrated long haired girl asked. She had been complaining nonstop for the last hour.
“Relax, Michinoku… We're almost there…” Shinji said slowly and patiently, as if talking to a four-year-old who probably wouldn't understand him anyway. The thing is, there's a huge age difference between four and eleven…
“Shinji, that's what you said half an hour ago!” the elder Ichijouji snapped back at him, as if trying to tell him she had the urge to bite his head off.
Shinji didn't reply to this, concentrating on navigating their way through the jungle to get to the portal point. It's getting dark, he noted to himself, wondering what time it is back at their place. But of course, the time in the Digital World passes faster. So it probably won't be that late.
`But we've been here since morning…' he reminded himself sleepily. `And we left after dinner…'
Then he felt a gentle tug on his t-shirt. He looked down to see his younger sibling, who was staring at him with a nervous look. Shinji stopped walking and kneeled down to look at his brother face-to-face.
“What is it, Tsuzuki?” he asked gently.
The younger Kamiya's eyes kept looking around. “There… There's someone here other than us…”
Shinji's eyes widen and he too looked around them. The other Digidestined fell silent, watching around them as well. “Are you sure, Tsuzuki…?” Shinji asked slowly, feeling the familiar sensation. One he always felt when he's panicking or scared.
`Why do I have a bad feeling about this…?' the elder Kamiya wondered to himself, warily watching the surrounding trees and bushes. `We can fight if anything happens…'
Actually, that would be the problem. Their Digimon are only at Rookie level, which is pretty much useless if fighting against a Champion or Mega level. Shinji recalled his father telling him about the evolution crests, but so far they haven't found any of them yet.
`This is bad…'
Tsuzuki looked around fearfully behind the party before saying, “There was someone in a black hood just now watching us…”
Shinji leapt up immediately, his panic level rising in an alarming rate. The others began to stay alert too. If it was a Digimon, they could probably handle. But a person… Shinji remembered all the bizarre adventure stories his parents had told him. Those weird human-like Digimon they encountered…
Mitsuru cut in. “But… how can there be someone here?”
“We're not the only Digidestined kids, you know?” Satsuki reminded him. “It could have been a Digidestined.”
Masaki shook her head. “I don't think they'll go around doing their duties as a Digidestined wearing hooded cloaks.”
Satsuki stared at her and continued, “Then-”
She didn't even have the time to finish her sentence as a loud, ground-shaking roar sounded somewhere in the jungle not far away from where they were.
Note: There you have it… the third chapter. I'm sorry for the delays, and I'll try to update this again as soon as possible. Thanks for the reviews, it reminded me about this fanfic when I found the mail from MediaMiner telling me I got a new review on my story.
