Chapter Eleven: Attack

Sure enough, the next day found all six Digidestined in the Digital World, listening to-surprise-Takeru once again. Daisuke sighed-this is not how this was supposed to go. He was the leader, declared so by Tai, his predecessor and former Bearer of the Crest of Courage. Of course, apparently the others didn't think he did a good enough job. Humph! He'd show them just how good a leader he really was in a few minutes.

Ken was sitting next to him and pressed his hand against Daisuke's leg, warning him to hold his temper and his tongue. It wouldn't do for the smaller boy to blow up at his 'friends' and make them suspicious. Discreetly, he shifted his gaze to Daisuke and caught his eyes, giving his best friend a quick wink before focusing once again on Takeru Takaishi. Man, he hated that boy sometimes! T.K. always thought that he was better than everyone else, especially Daisuke, and so took charge without even thinking twice. Even more aggravating was when he completely blew off an idea that Daisuke had.

Ken rolled his eyes at this thought. He had noticed that when Daisuke had an idea, it was usually worth listening to. His ideas almost always worked, and cut down on the risk that the Digidestined were in. Also, Daisuke's ideas had always defeated the bad guy in the end, whereas quite a few of Takeru's plans backfired. However, since Takeru appeared to be a favorite and had a type of leadership aura that was absent in Daisuke, the others listened to him instead.

Don't get him wrong, Daisuke did have terrific leadership qualities, but he refused to truly lead. Of course, that could be because every time he had tried to lead before, he had gotten blown off, so he felt there was no point in even making the attempt anymore. He started simply offering ideas, but when those too were ignored, he quit doing even that much, and just followed orders.

Takeru did just as they had predicted and ordered them to split into groups to find the rogue digimon they were hunting. They all paired up with their Jogress partners, so that they'd be at their strongest should any of them meet up with him. This was one of the few intelligent moves Takeru ever made.

Ken and Daisuke took off on Stingmon and Ex-veemon, heading in the opposite direction from the valley where Daemon had captured them. Shortly thereafter, they arrived at their base, and entered through the central courtyard, heading directly for the control room. Once there, Ken's outfit transformed to that of the Kaiser, and he sat down on the throne in the very center of the room, observing the others on the screens set throughout the Digital World. Daisuke sat on the slightly less elaborate throne to his right, while their digimon partners shared the one on his left. If they ever brought a third person into their ring, they'd get the left throne, and the digimon would have the floor, but this was okay for the moment.

Ken quickly brought up images of the remaining four Digidestined. Takeru and Iori had taken the route to the west, while Miyako and Hikari were scouting the eastern sector of the Digital World. Ken and Daisuke had taken the south, while the valley was to the north of their starting point.

The Kaiser waited until Takeru and Iori were in a small valley surrounded on all four sides by hills, then attacked. He called forth some of the local digimon there and requested that they attack the two Digidestined brats, but not seriously harm them. He just wanted to give them some warning, let them get a small taste of just how much trouble they were really in.

Beside him, Daisuke grinned, then curled up against his side, sighing contentedly. "This ought to teach them not to mess with us anymore, right? Then again, I guess it won't since they don't know that it's us attacking them," he added as an afterthought, and Ken laughed. "No, Dai-pet, they don't know it's us, and they won't either, until we're ready for them to know."

Daisuke snuggled closer to his side, and murmured, "Now that blondie and the runt are occupied, what should we do with the girls? I imagine that insects might be good for them," he suggested slyly. "Aren't they in a forest area right now? Lots of insects and spiders, I'd imagine." Ken chuckled. His lover certainly had a vicious streak in him, which apparently only really came out around him. Around others, he kept it sealed under lock and key.

Bringing up a picture of Miyako and Hikari, who were indeed traveling through a forest, he called up a group of insect digimon and told them that some Digidestined pests were in their forests. Once again asking that they wear them out and make the fight seem believable without hurting any of them too seriously, he cut off communication and turned to Daisuke.

"Well? What now? Do we head back to the meeting place and wait for them there? After all, it's quite possible that we were 'attacked' first, you know." Daisuke grinned up at him and nodded. Picking up their digimon, they had a pair of Airdramon bring them back to their starting point. Once there, they lay down on the cool grass and waited, eyes shut against the bright sunlight beating down on them.

About an hour later, they opened their eyes at the sound of approaching footsteps. Sure enough, there were the other Digidestined with their partners, looking exhausted. When the others caught sight of them, they frowned and approached them carefully.

Takeru was the first to speak. "Did you two find anything? Any traces of Daemon?" he asked. Ken and Daisuke shook his head and Ken sat up. "No, but we didn't exactly get very far either." When the other children just looked at him, he sighed softly and elaborated. "We were attacked by a herd of Monochromon and a flock of Airdramon. We didn't exactly have time for much exploring since the fight exhausted our digimon," he concluded, gesturing idly towards the two digimon sprawled out on the grass, sleeping.

The others mentioned that they too had been attacked, and they spent a few minutes discussing what had brought the attacks on, when Ken once again spoke up. "Did any of you notice that they appeared to be fighting of their own free will?" When the others looked at him, confused, he continued, "Well, as far as I could tell, none of the digimon we fought had rings or spirals or gears in them anywhere. I couldn't detect anything on them that might explain why they attacked us."

Takeru's brow furrowed in thought as he murmured, "I see what you mean, and you're right. None of the digimon were being controlled, as far as we could tell." He looked at Ken. "Could Daemon do this? Control them without any visible sign, I mean." Ken shook his head and replied, "No, Daemon is not that powerful. Besides, it's all but impossible for one digimon to control other digimon like that."

This time it was Hikari that spoke up. "But what about Myotismon? He controlled digimon, didn't he?" Ken smiled softly at her, then shook his head. "No, he didn't control digimon like that. He was powerful, so some digimon obeyed his orders out of a warped sense of loyalty, or greed, and he controlled others through fear, but there is no way that he would have been able to launch organized attacks with local digimon, which is what happened.

The other Digidestined remained confused, passing ideas back and forth, but Daisuke and Ken simply remained silent, listening to their theories and ramblings, trying their best not to laugh. Daisuke, especially, was trying to fight the urge to cackle madly and rub his hands together in evil glee at their predicament.

Ken must have realized what Daisuke was doing, because he stood up and excused himself, stating that he had to get back home, and dragged his friend up with him. Picking up their digimon, they strolled out of sight of the digimon, then took off running. Making it back to Ken's house, they let loose the laughter that had threatened to spill out all day.

"That was excellent!" crowed Daisuke. "And they fell for it! I don't believe it! We weren't even scratched up, but they believed us when we said we'd been attacked. And did you hear some of those theories they were passing back and forth? I mean, come on, could they possibly get any dumber." Ken just shook his head and smiled down at Daisuke, who continued to insult the absent Digidestined.

Finally deciding that something needed to be done before Daisuke passed out from lack of air, Ken leaned down and pressed his lips firmly against Daisuke's, effectively shutting the chocolate-eyed boy up. When he pulled back, he murmured, "Perhaps next time we'll let them locate Daemon for us, then attack them afterwards, ne?" Daisuke just nodded impatiently before reaching back up and pulling Ken down on top of him for another long kiss. They'd worry about their next move tomorrow, but tonight was solely theirs, and Dai was determined to make the most of it.

All right, I know that this chapter was really short, and I'm sorry, but it really couldn't be helped. I'll try to make the next chapter a bit longer, okay? Like at least another page or two. Anyhow, review, please! Thanks!
