Chapter Nine - Awestruck
“Without Italics is Japanese.”
“With Italics is English.”
“With Italics and Boldis French.”
Daisuke stood, awestruck, staring at the pictures that were the answer to the question of where he was. Everything rushed back to him, the café, the drive home, the tail, the calls, and the…decision to sleep in the same bed. Then it hit him, what the hell had happened to the tail…and Kari. He rushed back to the bedroom, even with his leg throbbing in pain, and grabbed his cell phone. His fingers were dialing the number of Ryland's cell before Davis even fully had the phone in his hands. He was moving quickly; as the phone rang he was gathering his shirt, wallet, and gun. It was still ringing as he searched for his keys.
Frustrated his finally hung the phone up and cursed loudly, shoving it in his pocket. Then his finally got a glimpse of his keys on the bar between the kitchen and living room, he grabbed then and jogged out the door, locking it behind him. He ran down the hall, pulling his cell out again and dialed the last number again, the elevator was in sight. The ringing was interrupted by a voice.
“Hello?” Michael finally answered.
“Finally, what the fuck's been going on?”
“Well, we've got two lower end terrorists in captivity and a safety tail on your girl.”
“…She's not my girl, I just got too drunk last night to drive and I guess she didn't want me to sleep on the floor.”
“You even slept together and she's still not your girl?”
“We slept together in the literal sense, you know, like actual sleeping, no fucking... I think.”
“Man, only Daisuke Motomiya would get so shit-faced at such a crucial moment…”
“Hey, it was a challenge.”
“Oh God, she was stupid enough to challenge you?”
“Whatev-”
“What's wrong Davis?”
“Uh, I gotta go.” He hung up. While he and Michael were talking he was waiting on the elevator. It had finally come, but it wasn't empty.
“Davis? What are you doing here?” Daisuke just started into blue eyes.
“It's so not what you think.”
“Whatever, it's not my business; I just came to drop some things off.”
“It's your ex-wife, TK, so it is your business. We had a lot to drink, she wouldn't let me drive home, no couch, and we were too drunk to realize who we were sleeping with, and I mean sleeping as in actual sleeping, not sexual sleeping.”
“Like I said yours and her business.”
“Arg, I don't have time, I need to get some stuff done, and I'll talk to you later.
“Righty-o.”
Davis was soon on the street, wondering if his luck could be any worse. He unlocked the door, and then ate his words as he looked at the parking ticket on the windshield wiper of the car. “Shit!” He yelled, forgetting he was on a populated street. He then quickly got in his car and started it up, now that he knew Kari was safe he tried to remember all the stuff he had to do today; one of which was return the rental car and get another permanent one.
