Izumi no Hikari
Chapter 8: Learning to Fly
by Wannabe Koushiro

A/N: Gee, I'm getting lazy. No lemony content here, well, it's implied, but not
described. I just didn't want to for a change. The story is starting to go in a
whole new direction, and I don't have the slightest clue when it will end.
***********************************************

I awoke the next morning to find a 140 pound weight on top of me. I sighed.
Wedged between Tai and the couch, I debated what to do. Wake him up to make him
move off of me, or...

"ACHOO!" ...Sneeze...That woke Tai up. "Sorry, hon." I told him as he came to.

"What a way to start the morning, getting sneezed on." He said, teasing me a
bit. He planted a kiss on my forehead. "How're you feeling?" He asked as he got
up.

"Okay, considering." I answered him, getting up myself. "I can't believe we
slept on the couch." I stretched my protesting muscles a bit.

Tai shrugged. "I don't care where we sleep, as long as we're together."

"That was so mushy, I almost wanted to puke. When did you get so mushy anyway?"
I commented. Tai just grinned at me.

"Please don't." He requested. "Anyway...If you really want an answer to that
question..." He glanced back at me to see if I did. I'm probably going to regret
it, but I nodded. "I don't know when I got 'mushy' as you put it, but you sure
bring it out of me, love." He said. I scowled. He was still grinning.

"Enjoy that grin while you can." I threatened. And sneezed yet again.

"Sheesh, are you ever going to quit sneezing?" Tai asked.

"I have no clue." I answered, walking into the bedroom. I debated changing my
clothes, or climbing into bed for the day. Of course, after seeing that the bed
was occupied by sleeping digimon, I decided to change my clothes and see about
making some breakfast.

I was pouring cereal into a bowl when I felt that familiar tingle in my nose. My
nose was wrinkling in anticipation of sneezing when I felt somthing under it.

"Please...quit...sneezing!" Tai practically yelled at me.

"I can't help it." I said pathetically, sniffling a bit.

"Yes, you can, Koushiro." Tai told me.

"I'll try." I told him. "I wish I could go to bed." I said.

"You just got up. Besides, you can always sleep on the couch again."

"I don't want to sleep, I just want to lay down and not do anything today. I
hate to say this, but I don't want to be sick!" I was very upset. Okay, I was
whining. I felt Tai's arms go around me.

"Hey, why don't you take that advice your sister gave you yesterday." Tai said.
I tried to think back to what she said.

"What advice was that?" I asked. All I could remember her saying yesterday was
that Izzy looked like a big scary bug.

"I quote: 'Calm down, it's not the end of the world.'" He told me.

"What's not the end of the world?" The dinosaur like digimon, Agumon, asked us
as he joined us in the kitchen. Tentomon wasn't far behind him.

"Me being sick, I guess." I answered him.

"And you worry about me getting in trouble all the time." Tentomon said, flying
up to stand on the kitchen counter so he could be face to face with me. "What
happened?" He asked.

"You don't want to know." Tai said.

"I'll tell you later, bud." I answered him. I was finished with breakfast, so I
placed my dish in the sink. "I'm going to be in bed if anyone wants me.
Hopefully, no one will." I slunk to the bedroom. I heard the slight buzzing
sound that Tentomon's wings make behind me. I crawled into bed and pulled the
covers up over my head.

"So, what happened?" Tentomon asked as he sat next to me on the bed.

"I don't want to talk about it." I said flatly.

"You made me tell you what happened to my wing...well, actually you figured it
out on your own, but you still tried to make me talk. I'm doing the same thing
now."

I hesitated. Should I tell him what happened? "Well," I started. "My day started
when I decided to get up with Tai and go running with him. This was probably an
ill omen, but a pair of shoes fell on me. Because of the running, I had stiff
muscles. After I had taken a shower to relax the stiff muscles, I sampled Tai's
new egg dish, which was really spicy."

"That seems innocent enough." Tentomon broke in.

"Then," I continued on, "Tai thought it was a good idea for us to spend some
time with our siblings. I agreed, and I thought we should go to the digital
world because I had a feeling you and Agumon were there. Well, you know it
started raining. I'd already been having a bad day, and the rain wasn't making
it any better. We were all running to find some way out of the rain. Nika had
tripped over her own feet, and I tripped over her. Which meant we were about to
get left behind. I convinced her to let Izzy digivolve."

"You're joking. She wasn't scared?" Tentomon asked.

"I think she was, but she was logical about it. And before you ask, yes, she
does have the same evolution." I told him.

"I really didn't care." Tentomon said.

"Sure you didn't." I teased him. "So, anyway, since we could ride now, we picked
up the others. The rain had turned into a full blown thunderstorm, so there was
thunder and lightning. A bolt of lightning came right in front of us, and Izzy
changed direction quickly. Which threw me off of her." I told him. I don't know
if it was possible, but it seemed that Tentomon was scowling. He kept quiet
though and let me continue on. "So, I was falling, and Greymon caught me, then
we caught up with the rest, and you should know the story from there." I told
him.

"I don't believe you." Tentomon said, upset. "How many times have we been
together and you've never fallen once?"

"There was freak weather contributing to it." I reminded him.

"Still, I'm going to have a talk with her. No one else fell, did they?"

"No...What does that have to do with anything?" I asked. I didn't think that she
was trying to off me on purpose. "Everyone else was probably holding on tight. I
was probably being a bit over confident because I had done it before. There's
always the possibility of an accident." I told him, tracing a pattern on his
shell with my finger.

"Hmmm...I still think that it could have been prevented. By the way, I'm sorry I
wasn't there to save you." He told me.

"It's okay." I said. "It's a good thing Greymon was, though or I'd have been
ground pizza. Anyway, I came in here to rest, not tell you about my day
yesterday." I scratched him on the head.

"Okay, I know when I'm not wanted." With that, he flew out of the room and left
me alone. Maybe now I could get some rest.

I smelled something cooking. I wasn't sure what it was though, and I felt like I
couldn't make it out of bed to see what it was. I rolled over to maybe avoid the
smell, but it just wouldn't be avoided.

I sighed. I really didn't want to get up, but the idea of food was pulling me
towards the food. I walked into the kitchen to see Tai stirring something on the
stove.

"You're awake," He said, sounding a bit surprised. "You look awful, by the way,
hon." I think he was teasing me, but I wasn't too sure because I was in a bit of
a fog.

"Thanks." I said sarcastically. "What is that?" I asked, remembering the reason
I was out here in the first place.

"It's what my mom used to make for Kari or me when we were sick." Tai explained.
"It's just some soup, and nothing wierd about it either. Strongest thing in it
is onion."

"That sounds okay." I said, sniffling. "What time is it?" I asked.

"It's about four in the afternoon." He informed me. "Don't worry about it, you
needed your rest." I nodded. Tai put his spoon down, and placed his hands on my
shoulder and led me to the couch. "Just sit and relax. I'll bring some in for
you." He told me. I wasn't about to argue. The blanket from last night was still
sitting here, so I wrapped it around myself.

About ten minutes later Tai brought me a bowl of the soup he had made. I tasted
it carefully, in case he was lying to me. To my surprise, it was pretty good.
"Great soup, hon." I told him. He grinned back at me.

"Of course it is." He answered. "Oh, by the way, your mom and Nika stopped by
earlier."

"What? Why didn't you wake me up?" I asked, upset that I'd missed them.

"We tried. You were dead to the world." Tai answered me.

"Well, what did they want?" I inquired, trying to figure out exactly why they
had shown up.

"Nika told your mom what happened and I guess it was a 'mom thing' that she had
to know that you were alright." I sighed. Nika couldn't have kept her mouth shut
about that?

"Was Izzy with them?" I asked, wondering if Tentomon had kept his promise.

"Yeah. You should have heard Tentomon ripping into her. At that moment, I really
wouldn't have wanted to be in her shoes." Tai said, answering the question I had
wanted to ask.

"Who's? Izzy's or Nika's?" I asked.

"Either of them." He said. "Apparently, Nika is in some pretty big trouble." I
just shook my head.

"That doesn't surprise me, if she told Mom about what happened." I answered him.

"Maybe you and Tentomon should give them lessons on how to fly properly and how
to ride." Tai suggested.

"That's actually a good idea, for a change." I teased him.

"Ha ha." Tai said.

"But if Nika's in trouble, we probably wouldn't have a chance very soon to do
that." I said.

"Tell your mom that you're going teach them to do things properly, she'd
understand." Tai suggested. I shook my head.

"That's not the way things work, at least, not when I lived at home anyway." I
said. "If you're grounded, you're grounded. No amount of cajoling is going to
get her out of her punishment." I explained to Tai. He shrugged.

"Well, it's still an idea." He said. "No matter when you do it." I nodded.

"You're right. Uh, have you seen my computer?" I asked, looking around for it
and not finding it.

"I hate to tell you this, but I didn't think you'd mind, so I let Nika borrow
it." I sighed.

"Do you have any idea what she'll do to it?! That's almost as bad as letting you
touch it!" I said. "There goes my next few paychecks..." I muttered.

Tai walked across the room and sat down next to me. He wrapped his arms around
me. I leaned into the embrace. "It's not the end of the world. Relax, already,
Koushiro." He told me as he stole a kiss. "Don't make me do more of that." He
threatened.

"Maybe I want you to." I said mischeiviously.

"You must be feeling better." Tai said, brushing my hair back with his fingers.
I just smiled at him. "You're definitely feeling better." He said as he kissed
me properly. Even though I was starting to enjoy it, I pushed him away. Tai
looked at me, confused as ever.

"Do you ever...I don't know...regret choosing to be with me?" I asked him.

"Why would I?" Tai asked. "You're the best thing that's ever happened to me." He
said, trying to kiss me some more.

"Even though you had an admitted crush on Sora?" I reminded him. He shrugged.

"So, I have a thing for red-heads. Besides, she's engaged to Matt now, if you
hadn't heard." I have to admit, I had to laugh at the first part of his answer.

"I was being serious." I told him. "Why did you decide to go with me instead of
a girl? And if I dyed my hair, wouldn't you like me anymore?" I asked, curious.

"I don't know. Don't think it was pity that I ended up liking you. Maybe a
little bit, but not totally." Tai paused to try to gather his thoughts. "How
about we just not think about this? This is probably something that we're better
off not trying to understand. As for you dyeing your hair...I prefer it the way
it is, but if you want to, go ahead. I'd still love you." He told me.

"Hmmm...maybe I will, just to test you... Anyway, I guess the reason I'm asking
this is, I guess I was thinking that it would have been nice to have children.
Of our own." I added before he could suggest the obvious.

"Maybe someday it'll be possible." Tai said. "But, as things stand on that
front, we're screwed. Oh, and I don't really want to say this, but do you know
how much of a girl you act like sometimes?" He asked, smiling at me.

"I don't mean to." I said.

"It's okay." Tai said. "It's kawaii, sometimes."

About a month later, which was, I found out, the length of Nika's punishment,
she, Tai, and I were in the digital world, teaching her and Izzy proper
techniques of how to ride on your digimon and how not to throw off the people
riding on you.

"Hey, Koushiro!" Nika greeted me. "What happened to your hair?" She asked.

"Don't ask." I told her. I took Tai up on the challenge of dyeing my hair and
had dyed it an awful shade of brown. Well, awful on me anyway. I heard some
snickering from closer to the ground. "You want me to paint your shell green?" I
asked Izzy, because I knew it was her that was laughing at me. I heard Tentomon
snicker at that.

"You just look wierd." Izzy told me, still trying to laugh at me.

"Yeah, big bro. Why don't you just dye it back to red?" Nika asked me.

"Too much trouble." I explained.

Leaving things at that, we walked for a while until we were standing in a large,
open area. "This is enough space, wouldn't you think?" I asked Tai. He nodded in
answer.

"For three champion level 'mons, I think it's plenty." I still wasn't sure why
Tai had come with us, but he was here.

"Okay, first things first. You need to digivolve." I pointed to the two bugs. I
think it pained Nika to see Izzy digivolve again, considering what happened last
time. Tentomon went ahead and digivolved, but Nika's partner didn't seem too
interested in doing that.

"No..." I heard Nika say softly. I almost missed it, then realized what was
wrong.

"Nika, you're going to learn to do it right so it doesn't happen again. So, she
kind of needs to digivolve if we're to teach you two how." I pointed out to her.
"Do you remember what I told you a few years ago?" I asked her.

"I can't be afraid of her digivolving." Nika repeated the short form of what I'd
told her.

"Right." I told her.

"That's not what I'm afraid of, Koushiro." Nika said. "I'm scared of someone
getting hurt." Nika looked up at me, her brown eyes shining with concern.

"That's why both Tai and I are here. We're going to make sure no one does. I
know that both Kabuterimon and Greymon wouldn't let anything happen to any of
us, even you and Izzy. Right, guys?" I asked the two champion level 'mons
standing behind me. They nodded in answer.

"Nika," Izzy broke in. "They're right. They wouldn't let anything happen to us,
and I promise to try to not let anything happen like last time." She turned her
blue eyes to Nika, pleading with her. Nika grasped Izzy's claws in her hands.

"You promise?" Nika asked her. Izzy nodded her head.

"It's best that we do learn from someone that has the expierence." Izzy told
her. "I really didn't mean for it to happen, and like Tentomon told me, it
shouldn't have happened in the first place." Nika glanced at me, and I nodded,
agreeing with the little bug. "If I'm to learn that, Koushiro's right, I need to
digivolve."

Nika took a deep breath. And finally nodded. "I know both of you are right. You
can do it, Izzy." Nika gave her permission. It seemed quite odd to see two,
different kabuterimons in front of me, but that's the way things are.

"Okay, Nika, you're probably not going to like this, but I want Izzy and
Kabuterimon to go off and get a bit of flying practice." Nika did look
disappointed, but I had something in mind for her first since Tai and Greymon
were here as well. "He can give her a few pointers on how to make sharp turns.
Right now, what I want you to do, is learn some climbing." She looked at me a
bit confused. The two large bugs had taken to the air as I said that. We walked
over to where Tai and Greymon were standing. Tai was leaning against Greymon's
leg.

"Figured out why I'm here, huh?" Tai asked.

"I'm grateful. Nika needs to learn to climb." I smiled at Tai, figuring he would
probably know what I'm talking about.

"Ah. I wondered why those two went off by themselves." Tai said.

"I told them to." I answered him. "Nika, this is what you're going to do while
Izzy's gone. You're going to climb Greymon." I told her. "You'll be able to
apply the same technique to climbing on Izzy's back. Tai, would you mind
demonstrating?" I asked him.

"Of course not." He said. "Best way to climb up to his back is to step on his
foot first." Nika looked a bit shocked at that. "Don't worry, you stepping on
him isn't going to hurt him, right, Greymon?" Tai reassured her. Greymon nodded
in answer. "Get close enough to the knee to pull yourself onto it. You should be
close enough to reach his arm. Grab his arm and swing yourself on to his back."
He finished up, sitting on Greymon's back.

"There's only a small amount of diffence between this and mounting your digimon,
and I'll explain that when they come back." I told her. "Go ahead, and try."

It took Nika awhile, but she finally got the hang of it. "Great job, Nika." I
heard Tai tell her. "You'll be a pro at this in no time." She giggled at that. A
dark shadow passed over us. I looked up to see that it was just the bugs. I
waved at them to let them know that we were ready for them again. Kabuterimon
circled around, looking to see where there was a good place to land. Izzy was
following him, doing the same. That really looked wierd, but who was I to argue
with the digital world. It wanted Nika to have her as a partner; there wasn't a
thing I could do about it.

"Ready to try it on your own digimon?" I called up to Nika. She climbed down
carefully from her perch behind Tai. Unfortunately, careful didn't mean
graceful. She was really a bit too short for some of this, but she was a
trooper. The last couple of feet, from Greymon's knee to the ground she slipped
and fell.

"This is what I thought would happen, niisan." She told me as I helped her up
from the ground.

"Look at the bright side, at least you're not wearing a skirt." I told her,
trying to make light of the situation. She must have known we were going to
work, so she had on jeans and an old purple t-shirt. She even had on the shoes
I'd given her.

"Koushiro..." Nika groaned. I smiled down at her.

"So, your dismount needs a bit of work." I told her, shrugging it off. "You're
good at getting on, and that's good enough for today. Now, you're going to apply
what you learned by climbing Greymon to Izzy."

The two insects had landed a bit of a ways away. We walked over to them. Since
we were through with him, Greymon had de-digivolved back to Agumon. He and Tai
were bringing up the rear. I almost wished that I could tell the bugs to
de-digivolve, but they still needed to be in their adult forms for a while yet.

"Izzy, would you step a couple of steps forward please?" I asked her. She did as
I asked. "Okay, Nika, this is going be a bit different." I told her. "I need
both of you to watch carefully." I was getting set to climb up Kabuterimon. I
turned around to make sure they were both watching. "This is basically the same,
but since our partners have four arms instead of two, you swing from the top set
of arms, not the lower set. You use those as a stepping stone to the upper set.
From there, try to settle yourself in front of the higher set of wings, but
behind the head." I explained to Nika as I climbed slowly so she could watch how
to do it. "Or, you can go for the top of the head, but that might be difficult
for you reach just yet." I pointed out to her. "But, it is basically the same
thing you were doing with Greymon." I knelt where I was behind Kabuterimon's
head. "You try it." I told Nika. I saw her take a big breath, then start
climbing up Izzy's leg.

Nika had a bit of trouble trying to navigate her partner's arms. Well, it would
have helped if Izzy would have kept her arms still more than she did. I was kind
of snickering at that, even though I knew that was mean of me, but it was kind
of funny. I think Izzy was just having a bit of a nervous twitch. "What's wrong
with her?" I murmured down at my partner.

"No clue." Was the answer I recieved just before the unthinkable happened. I
really was thinking nothing of it. I had been thinking that there was something
familiar about the way Izzy was folding and unfolding her arms. Neither
Kabuterimon or I noticed the beginning of the ball of electricity that was
forming in front of her until it was too late.

"Jump!" I commanded my partner as he was already doing it, like he had read my
mind. We were in the air before it had a chance to connect with us. Kabuterimon
had to fly around a bit before we could land again.

After we had landed, we found that Izzy had reverted back to her tentomon stage.
"What was that?" Nika was asking her as I ran up to them. I didn't know it was
possible, but I think Izzy was crying.

"I don't know, I couldn't help it!" Izzy sobbed into Nika's shoulder. Nika had
gathered her up in a hug.

"If I didn't know better, I'd say you're trying to kill my brother." Nika said.
That sent a chill through me.

"I wasn't trying to do anything but stay still! I don't know what happened."
Izzy cried.

"It's okay, we're not hurt." I told her, kneeling down to their level. "I know
you wouldn't do anything like that on purpose." I put my hand on Izzy's shell to
reassure her. "If we'd have had more time, a blast from Kabuterimon probably
would have knocked out yours. I thought the way you were acting so nervous was
strange though." I told her. "Nika, do yourself a great big favor, and don't
tell Mom. You'd be grounded for a month again." Nika gulped, and nodded slowly,
knowing I was right. Nika looked horrified at what had happened. I went from
comforting Izzy to comforting Nika.

"Koushiro, why does she do this?" Nika asked me. I just shook my head in
frustration.

"I don't know, Nika-chan." I told her, as I put my arms around her. "But as long
as no one was hurt, that's the important thing." Tai came up to us to interupt
out little moment.

"Maybe that's enough for today. We should probably go home. It is getting to be
dinner time." Tai suggested. "Hey, Nika-chan, think your mom made enough to feed
all of us?" He asked her. I know what he was trying to do, but that still
doesn't take the thought of 'what if?' out of our heads.

Nika giggled at the way Tai was acting. "Silly. Only Koushiro can call me that."
She informed him.

"What?!" Tai acted surprised. "Come on. Aren't I as much of a brother to you as
he is?" He asked her as he picked her up to give her a piggy back ride.

"Yeah, but you're not my real brother." After Nika said that, Tai turned a
meaningful gaze at me. I just looked away to avoid him. A light breeze passed
through the area, blowing our hair and chilling at least me a bit. We walked
back to the gate in silence.

Tai and I arrived home after eating dinner with my family. We were all very
careful not to tell about what happened just before we came home. We had barely
walked in the door when Tai started in on me the way I thought he was going to
last time.

"You need to tell her." He told me.

"Well, considering her digimon is trying to kill me, whether intentionally or
not, I might not be around long enough for her to even care that I'm not really
her brother." I answered him.

"I don't think Izzy is trying to do that on purpose."

"That's twice that she's almost killed me! Frankly, once was too many." I told
him.

"Well, I think that you at least would feel better if you told Nika. Isn't it
just eating at you that you haven't told her the truth?" He asked.

I looked down at the ground. "Yeah, it kind of is..." I admitted. "I just wonder
if she can handle it. I mean, look what happened to me. I learned on my own, and
I retreated into my own little world. She thinks that I am really her brother,
why should I break that illusion of hers? Would she retreat from me if she knew
the truth?" I asked, at odds with doing the right thing and carrying on with the
happy illusion.

"I can't answer those questions." Tai said as he sat down next to me. He placed
his arm around my shoulder. "I just think that you need to do what is right,
and, to me, that means telling Nika the truth." He informed me, leaning over to
kiss me. "It's been a long day, and I can't be mad at you long." He explained.

"Good." I said. "I've been trying to control myself for a while now. I want you
something bad." I could feel that familiar feeling stir up. I made my move. I
always feel so primitive when I get like this.

"Down, boy." Tai teased me. I grinned.

"Sorry, but I don't think that's possible now." I said as I kissed him all over.
I felt Tai grope at me.

"I guess you're right. I should probably do something about that, huh?" He
asked. I didn't care what he did, as long as I could get relief from this
feeling. About twenty minutes later, I felt much better.

"Thanks, hon." I told Tai. "I really needed that."

"Anytime, babe." He answered me as he lightly kissed me. "Anytime." I grinned. I
leaned back on the bed which was where we had moved to.

"Hey, remember what I was talking about last month?" I asked him.

"What?" He asked in turn. "Dyeing your hair? I thought that was kind of a flop,
if you ask me." He was right about that. I'm still waiting for it to grow out.
To tell the truth, Nika had a good idea in dyeing it back to red, but I was just
too lazy to do it. Plus, the dye really stinks.

"Not that." I said, a bit annoyed. "About having children."

"Remember what I said, we're screwed." Tai answered as we settled in for the
night.

"Maybe not." I said, and handed him a piece of paper. "The univerisity is doing
a study and they're going to see if they can implant female organs into a man
and see if he can carry a baby to term, or at least seven to eight months." I
explained to Tai. "I want to volunteer."

"You're crazy, Koushiro." Tai said, slightly in shock at what I was thinking of
doing. "Why would you want to? I mean, besides the obvious."

"Curiousity, why else do I do anything?" I grinned at him. "And, I know you're
not going to like hearing this, but I've talked to the group doing this. Joe's
on the team doing it, so it's not like I'd be working with total strangers." I
said.

"Does Kari know about this?" Tai asked.

"I believe she does. Why did you want to know that?"

"Just did. I guess...I'm okay with it, if you really want to do it. Just one
question, remembering basic biology, I guess part of it is how? I mean, it takes
a sperm and an egg, and still between the two of us, we only have one."

"We'll worry about that later. It's just like an organ transplant, and they have
to be sure that the organs won't be rejected. So, it has to be done in stages.
Or, at least, that's how Joe explained it to me."

"Why is he doing this, anyway?" Tai asked.

"Did you see Kari's new ring?" I asked him back.

"He's getting paid a lot, isn't he?" I nodded in answer.

"They're going to pay their volunteers, too, even if it turns out to be a bust.
And, I believe Joe told me that he's getting college credit for doing it as
well. He's trying to graduate early." I paused for a second. "Do you really
support me on this? I don't want to do it if you're not going to be supportive
of it." I told him, worried that he wouldn't.

Tai grabbed me and looked deep into my eyes. "Koushiro, I know this means a lot
to you. I will be there for you no matter what happens. I've been there for you
for the past almost ten years. I was there for you when you had nightmares, and
when you saw the horrible pictures of the accident that killed your parents. I
am here for you now, and I will be here for you in the future. There is nothing
that will keep me from not being there for you, love."

"Oh, Tai..." I breathed. "Thank you." I was on the verge of crying.

"Ah, geez, you're acting like a girl again." He told me. I grinned.

"Well, I'm the girl anyway, why not act like one?" Tai lightly kissed me again

"Well, I love you no matter how you act." He told me. "Let's get some sleep.
Maybe tomorrow we can try to figure out why Izzy is trying to kill you."

"Thanks for reminding me of that." I said, suddenly miserable.

"Sorry, love. I think we need to know why and work from there." I nodded and
rolled over.
