Kenta, the Runaway

Chapter Five: Close to Christmas

By KellyQ

I walked in the room to see Lee sitting by the fire, his sister resting on the bed and no Takato! Where is he? I hope he didn't get adopted like Ruki did just two days ago. Speaking of Ruki I turned my head to see Juri sleeping. She's been doing that a lot lately.

"There you are."

I turned to see Hirokazu walking in. I couldn't help but smile feeling warmth grow in my cheeks.

"Do you know where Takato is?" I asked.

"He and Ryo went Christmas shopping with Mrs. Taylor."

"That's good … because I thought he got adopted. Wait … did you say Christmas shopping?"

"Yea. Mrs. Taylor takes each of us out shopping to by presents."

"That sounds like fun. I never went out shopping before. Anything you want unparticular?"

"That's hard to say since I just had my birthday just four weeks ago. What do you want?"

"I … I don't know…"

And that was the truth. Because I don't know. I don't know what's out there in the big world.

"Uh … what about another kiss on the cheek?" I asked hopefully.

"Come on Kenta, isn't there something …. what about the Pokemon training card game you saw on T.V.?"

Oh yea, that. It would be nice but I would rather have a kiss from him.

"Come one, Hirokazu … just a little one?" I asked giving him the puppy dog eyes.

He was about to lean over when the door opens and Takato, Ryo, and Mrs. Taylor walks in with a bag of wrapped goods. I watch as Takato sticks his hand in the bag.

"We all ready talked about this Takato …"

"But I wanted to give Lee his early Christmas present."

"I'm sorry … but he's going to have to wait just like the rest of us."

Takato moans as he walks to his boyfriend and sits next to him. Mrs. Taylor walks to the side of Juri's bed and sits down.

"How are you feeling?"

She said nothing. Mrs. Taylor sighed.

"I have something for you ..."

Juri looked her way as she pulled out of the bag a letter.

"It's a letter from Ruki."

Juri sat up took the letter and opened and started to read it. We all watched her expression change to happiness.

"I take it that things are going well?" Said Ryo putting his hands behind his head as he leaned against the back wall of his bad.

"I'm glad." Mrs. Taylor spoke up, "I knew that things where going to work out from that family. Mrs. Makino is a well known modal so Ruki will be well taken care of."

"Do you think I'll see her again?" Juri asked hopefully.

"Mmm. You might …. when you get adopted." Ryo responded shrugging his shoulders.

"Ryo be nice."

I looked his way to see that Mrs. Taylor's comment just rolled off his back as he rolled over and was asleep in no time.I couldn't help but sigh. That guy is something else.

**************

Lee and I had our turn the next day. The mall was huge to say the least. I spent one hour looking for something for Hirokazu but nothing. It's not fair … Lee got something Takato and his sister including something for everyone else and I didn't get anyone anything.

"What's wrong?" Mrs. Taylor asked walking to my side.

"Oh, I just can't seam to find one good present for Hirokazu … I don't even know what he likes."

"We can fix that easily, Kenta."

She put down her bag and got out a card board box and opened it. Inside was a black T-shirt with a cross.

"I was going to give him this but you can sign the card so he thinks it's from you."

"Sounds good to me." I smiled.

************

Once we got back, the Christmas tree was almost covered with decorations; all that was left was the star. Suzie took the star out of the box as Mrs. Taylor lifted her up and the star was placed.

"You kids did a fine job." Mrs. Taylor said with a smile and added. "Are you all ready for a story?"

We all crowded around her like bees around a jam pot. She took a green and golden book off the shelf and sat next to the fire as we sat by her feet.

She opened the book and cleared her throat.

"The Hobbit."

Hmmm. I wonder what this is going to be about. She turned the page and started to read.

"In a whole in the ground there lived a hobbit. Not a nasty dirty wet whole filed with ends of worms and a nosy smell. Nor a bare dry sandy hole with nothing in it to sit down or to drink. It was a hobbit whole and that meant comfort."

As she continues to read my mind started to wonder to those fare away places of Dwarfs, Wizards, and Trolls. I looked around the room to see that everyone was really listening to the story or partly listening.

*********

Mrs. Taylor stopped reading one hour latter saying that it was time for bed. We got up and did our usual. Brushed our teeth, washed our faces and put on our night-gowns and where in bed. Mrs. Taylor tucked us in one by one.

"That was a great story so fare." I said as she tucked me in.

"It's one of mine too. J.R.R. Tolkien is one of my favorite authors," She told me as she sat next to me, "he did three more books … The Silmarillion, Lord of the Rings and --- shoot! I forgot the other one but it doesn't matter right now. The main thing is that you all get some sleep."

"Okay. See you in the morning." I said as she walked to the door.

"Good night."

She then turned the lights off after she opened the door and closed it softly when she walked out. I couldn't help but smile. Haa. Another day in paradise, I thought as I closed my eyes.
