Chapter 2 New Friends
A/N: Enjoy.
The day drags by slowly. All of my teachers teach
their lessons in Japanese. I try to pay attention, but it's
so hard. I feel so out of place. Eventually, the bell rings.
The kids scatter toward outside or the lunchroom. I go
to the cafeteria, grab a juice, and go outside to the
courtyard. I sit away from the other kids. I stick my
straw through the hole of the carton and began sipping
on it. I stare at all of the kids talking, laughing, joking,
and eating with her friends. I start to cry. Tear drops hit
the lenses of my glasses. I take them off. I'm sensitive.
I want friends I can talk with, to share things with, to
laugh, joke, and play with, to always be there for and
vice versa, friends I can love and friends that love me. I
sniff. Suddenly, I feel a soft tap on my shoulder. I turn
around. I can see a boy sitting near the tree looking at
me. He hands me a handkerchief. I can tell. "Thanks," I
say. "No problem", the boy replies. I wipe my eyes,
then my glasses lenses. I slip them back on. The boy
is my age with ,stylishly, brown hair, soft, brown eyes,
and good-looking features. He wears a red short
sleeved shirt with pockets over a yellow T-shirt with a
strange symbol, brown capri pants, white socks, and
red and orange sneakers. "How did you know I was
here?" I ask. "I followed you", he replies. "I'm in your
home room and I heard those girls talking about you."
"How come I didn't see you?" I ask. I'm so full of
questions. He shrugs. My stomach growls. The boy
laughs. He scoots over to me and opens his lunch. It
has shrimp, sushi, and other seafood. The boy hands
me a pair of chopsticks. "Pull them apart," He tells me. I
pull my chopsticks apart. "Whats your name?" I ask
him. "Kanbara Takuya," he answers. He smiles and
extends his hand. "Hajimemashite." I put my hand into
his and shake."Yolanda Ingram. Nice to meet you."
Kanbara san begins to eat. I try to pick up a piece of
shrimp with my chopsticks, but it slips out of my grasp.
Kanbara san laughs and shows me how to use them. It
takes practice, but I don't mind. I tell him about myself
and where I live. He seems very interested. He tells me
all about himself and other things. He lives with his
mom and has a little brother named Shinya. He doesn't
mention his dad and I don't bother to ask. We're so
deep in conversation, we almost don't hear the bell
ring. Kanbara san picks up the remainders of his lunch
and walks with me to my next class.
The rest of the day seems to go by fast now that I
have a new friend. I'm so happy. We have the same
Gym class together. We have to change for it. Girls
have to wear a white T-shirt and bloomers and boys
have to wear a white T-shirt and matching shorts.
Dressed, I join the other kids outside. I stand next to
Kanbara san. He grins at me. I smile back. We all end
up playing Dodge Ball. It's fun, especially with
Kanbara san on my side. After Gym, I have Music, and
then I go home. I change out of my school shoes and
back into my street shoes, then leave the school. I
didn't see Kanbara san. After making friends with him, I
feel better. He makes me feel comfortable and I can tell
him anything.
"Inguramu san!" It's him. He rides up to me on a bike.
He's wearing a backwards hat with square goggles,
and gloves.
"Wanna go to the park?"
"Can't. Got homework."
"O.K. Maybe later."
"O.K. Bye, Kanbara san."
"You know, you dont have to call me Kanbara san.
Call me 'Takuya.' "
"How about 'Takuya san'?"
"Hai. Mata ne, Yorande san!" Then rides off. I could get used to Japan.
Later, I do my homework with Takashi san helping me.
When I'm finished with my homework, I ask her if I can
go to the park. She says yes. Takashi san drives me
there. When we arrive, I see Takuya san playing soccer
with some other boys. She lets me out next to the field
where theyre playing. "I'll be back by 8:00," she says.
"Have fun." "O.K.," I reply. "I will." Takashi san
drives off. I walk over to where Takuya san is playing
soccer. He kicks the ball into the goal. His teammates
cheer. "It's 9-8," a boy with short blue hair says. Takuya
san leans over to catch his breath, then gets back into
the game. Takuya san's team wins the game 10-9. He
shakes hands with the opposite team players, telling
them they did a great job. Some other kids run up to
him. Takuya san notices me. He motions me to come
over. I jog up to him and the other kids. "That was a
good game you played," I tell him. "Arigato," He replies.
"These are my friends Orimoto Izumi, Shibayama
Junpei, Himi Tomoki, and Minamoto Kouji. Guys, this is
Inguramu Yorande. She's the girl I told you about."
"Hi," I say. "Hajimashite," Izumi, the blonde, green-eyed
girl with a pointy, purple hat says. Tomoki, a little boy
with an "Oliver Twist" type hat and green eyes, looks at
me and smiles shyly. Junpei, a chubby boy with spiked
brown hair and brown eyes, nods his head. Kouji, a
bandanna-wearing, blue eyed boy with long, dark blue
hair tied into a ponytail, stares hard at me. I guess he's
not used to seeing a mixed American girl. "We're gonna
play some games," Takuya san says to me. "Anything
you wanna play?" "Uh..." I start. "Anything you want to
play is fine with me." "I wanna play 'Hide and Seek'"
Tomoki pipes up. Junpei groans."That's a baby game!"
"Is NOT!!" Tomoki yells. "Is TOO!!"Junpei yells back.
"Is NOT!!"
"Is TOO!!"
"Is NOT!!"
"Is TOO!!"
"Is NOT!!"
"Is TOO!!"
"Is NOT!!"
"Is TOO!!"
They both start to argue. "Let's play on the slide,
instead of playing a game," I suggest. "O.K.," Takuya
san replies. Junpei and Tomoki drop their argument
and head over to the slide with us. Kouji san sits on a
bench near the slide. He eyes me as I wait for my turn.
I feel a bit uneasy around him. Those blue eyes look so
cold, but mysterious and beautiful. HE looks so
beautiful. Tomoki climbs up the slide first. After him is
Izumi, Junpei, Takuya san, and, lastly, me. We have so
much fun. We take turns swinging on the swings and
playing on the jungle gym. I get to know them. I have
so much fun that I lose track of time. A car horn blows.
Takashi san's here. "Awww," I groan. "I was having fun,
too." Oh, well. I say "good-bye" to the others then get
into Takashi san's car and we drive off. Back at home, I
tell Takashi san about my day. She's really glad I made
some friends, seeing I'm new in Japan. Takashi san
had made dinner, but I'm not hungry, so I hug her, tell
her good-night, and go to bed.
