Chapter 10: I’m A FATHER?!
Later that night, after a few more glasses of wine, Shin stumbled up to their room. He hated what he was about to do, but he just had to. He had to know. Ambrosia lay in bed, in a fetal position. Once in a while she let out a hefty tremble. He immediately forgot his mission and sat down beside her. “Ajhi-chan,” he whispered laying a hand on her cheek. “Are you alright?” she groaned.
“I----” she croaked. “think I’m gonna hurl.” He backed away. “Shin…” she murmured. “I wasn’t going to tell you yet, but she’s come early. Melaza and I have both given our blood. Soon you’ll be free.” He was confused.
“Who…came early?” She took his hand and pressed his palm to her slightly swollen gut. His eyes popped wide open as he felt a hard kick.
“Our daughter.” As he gently kissed her, he noticed a hint of pineapple perfume…
Week 13, August
Melaza had taken off unseen the night of the wedding, and Orana and Kibito had gone on a short trip as well. Ambrosia had been taken to the hospital wing that night, so Shin’s plan had backfired. Once he was sobered up, though, he couldn’t even imagine actually doing what he’d planned. He spent nearly every moment at her side in the dark room, waiting for her to go into labor. Every groan, every labored breath caused him to dart back to her side in fear. Finally, the big day came.
“Chien…” she gasped. “Go to the kitchen and get a hot water bottle, pray.” She was about to go into labor.
“But Ajhi-cha----” her eyes grew wide and pale.
“I don’t want you to see me like this, Shin!” she gasped. “Just GO!” He felt her chi rising at an unheard of rate, and remembered something Hazel had told him. She’d have trouble controlling her power during the birthing process, and might transform. Either way, it was dangerous to be around her right then. He raced out the door. Just as he crossed the threshold, he heard a violent shriek. He kept running.
Half an hour later, a beautiful baby girl was born.

Shin sat in a chair by Ambrosia’s bed, unshaven and snoring like a tiger. Following Anin tradition, Ambrosia would not see the child until she’d fallen to sleep without aid, and awoken without provocation. Hazel and Victorio took turns checking on them, but it was little Kaizenore, come to see his aunt, that found her awake and told Hazel. The lights still out, their daughter was brought in.
The look on Ambrosia’s face was priceless as she took the infant into her arms. Shin had never seen a sight so beautiful as his daughter in the arms of his beloved, acting as all new mothers do…memorizing her face, feeling her breath, playing with her tiny fingers…it was a totally different matter when Shin held her. He felt as if one move would break her! Every sound sent him into a panic. Was she supposed to do that?! Is she okay?! As for Ambrosia, she looked like an angel, nestled beneath the blankets. Finally he handed the child back to her mother to fend off the poor thing’s hunger. Ambrosia winced a few times as the child’s short canines scratched her breast. (Lican children are born with hair and teeth.) Finally she was satisfied and fell asleep in her mother’s arms. Before she left, Hazel asked of Ambrosia,
“What is her name?” Ambrosia drifted off.
“Wysteria, Sister. Her name is Wysteria.”
