Chapter 4

This chapter is a song fic/parody of the song, “Make a Man out of You.” From the movie.

The day had been long and hard for Videl. A hundred and fifty pounds of extra weight made moving a lot harder, but somehow she managed. They were still traveling when exhaustion took hold after the evening meal so they were forced to sleep on the hard steel floors of the training bay. This was only a transport vehicle not fitted with the proper facilities to house the troops properly. For her own protection Videl slept in a corner with her back to the wall so that she could not be snuck up on and so she wouldn't have to sleep in too close quarters with the others. It would be very hard to get up off the floor in the morning, but Videl was too tired to care and fell right to sleep.

She was awaked by a loud creak and the feel of the ship docking. The ship shook so she was glad she was against the wall because the rest of the men just slid around the deck and crashed into each other because of the violent movement the ship was making. When it finally stopped Commander Gohan emerged from the station room.

“Good morning gentleman!” He said with an almost real smile. Then it changed to a devilish smirk that sent chills down Videl's spine. “We have arrived now the real work starts.”

Let's get down to business--to defeat the Ice-jinns.
Did they send me daughters when I asked for sons?
You're the saddest bunch I ever met
But you can bet before we're through
Mister, I'll make a man out of you

Videl cringed at his tone. `Real work?' She thought. They filed out into what looked to be a large cargo bay. They were on the floating base orbiting the dark moon of 1 Delta 10 Tango. They were ushered out of the cargo area up many floors till they walked out onto a large area that was covered by a large dome that allowed one to see out into space.

“This is the training area. Here you will learn; stealth, teamwork, fighting skills, and technological know how. Being a skirmisher may not seem glamorous, but it is important.”

As he walked along the ranks he gave her a pointed glance. “Those of you not used to a saiyan training load, well then I would say you had better get used to it.”

Videl knew he was specifically speaking to her. She wanted to growl. Just because her father was presumed a cowardly weakling did not mean she was. She trained hard, maybe not at saiyan level, but hard enough. She instantly knew that because of being a full human and Hercule's child she would have to prove herself before she would be accepted, especially by the young commander.

Tranquil as a forest
But on fire within
Once you find your center
You are sure to win
You're a spineless, pale, pathetic lot
And you haven't got a clue
Somehow I'll make a man out of you!

For the next week Gohan put them through a series of appraisals. They were tested on speed, agility, flexibility, strength, endurance, skill, and power level. Videl was still getting used to her new weight and had a hard time making it to her usual speed and agility making her look like a complete weakling in everything, but skill, flexibility, and intellect. She was a strategic fighter, but thanks to her exhaustion, nervousness, and added weight, not to mention fighting saiyans she was worn down and getting beat every time.

Through the week of skill testing most of the unit treated her with a mild neglect as though she didn't matter. In some ways she was thankful that she was so easily ignored accept by the commander and three others who loved to taunt her. Their favorite subject was her father's cowardice and her weakness. If it had been in her power she wanted to beat them into bloody heaps.

Danawi, Errando, and Chander.

Danawi in and of himself pretty much left her be, but with the others he would laugh and jeer as well. He was small and lean. A quarter saiyan, he had short wavy blonde hair and neon blue eyes. He was the strong, silent type if their ever was one.

Errando was a very large half saiyan. He had a messy mass of short brown hair and coal colored eyes. He had shoulders so broad he had to turn sideways to go through doors and so much muscle Videl was sure his shirt would pop. He wasn't the brightest bulb in the box, but he had an unmatchable boldness.

Chander, also a half saiyan, looked every part the saiyan warrior. Black spiked hair and bangs dark eyes and tough demeanor. He was muscular and tall, but not large like Errando. He was usually the one to start the insults.

Lucky for her they were having as tough a time under Commander Gohan as she was.

Errando:
I'm never gonna catch my breath

Danawi:
Say good-bye to those who knew me

Chander:
Boy I was a fool in school for cutting gym

Officer:
Gohan's got 'em scared to death

Videl:
Hope he doesn't see right through me

Errando:
Now I really wish that I knew how to fight!

(To Be a man)
We must be swift as the coursing river
(To Be a man)
With all the force of a great typhoon
(To Be a man)
With all the strength of a raging fire
Mysterious as the dark side of the moon

Time is racing toward us till the Huns arrive
Heed my every order and you might survive
You're unsuited for the rage of war
So pack up, go home, you're through
How could I make a man out of you?

We must be swift as the coursing river

With all the strength of a raging fire

After a week of appraisals they assembled at dawn once again and Gohan stared at them with a look of disgust.

“Pitiful!” He snapped.

“Your test scores were not at all satisfactory!”

His expression quickly turned to a smirk. “But worry not boys because in the next few weeks I intend to correct that problem starting…now! Push ups! Let's go!” He shouted reverting to drill sergeant mode.

Videl and the others hit the floor and began their push ups, but after about fifty Gohan told them to start over because they were not in sync.

Videl's pride was deeply wounded by Gohan's harsh words about their test scores. She wanted to blame her failure on something else, but at the same time her honor wouldn't allow it.

`I'll show him' She thought as they continued their pushups for the third time because they weren't all counting.
