Chapter Five: Making Tracks
`That had been months ago.' Vegeta thought to himself. `Where is he?'
Vegeta looked up to the high red cliffs above the valley. He had been trying to track the tall Saiyan since he hadn't shown for their spar all those months ago. But just like any Saiyan, he was untraceable when he wanted to be.
Vegeta surveyed the surrounding rock faces. `This is where I last felt his chi.' Unlike in deserts and grasslands, rock caverns and caves were harder to find traces of the things you were hunting.
Smells were the only thing that could be traced at the moment, but even now as the cold winds whipped though all the towering pillars of rock, Vegeta was unable to get a clear scent.
“Bah! Where the fuck is he!” Vegeta had almost caught Goku on several occasions since Chichi had instated Goku's banishment from the home. But they were mere glimpses of the man just before he teleported away.
Vegeta leaned down to the red rock below his feet. His body hunched over as his nose barely grazed the surface of the sun heated stone mass. Breathing in all the scents available, Vegeta deduced that besides himself, the only thing it smelled like was every other rock on this miserable planet.
Vegeta pitched forward placing his hands on the surface below him. The fading warmth from the rock felling good to him as he lay down against it. `I must sleep...' Vegeta thought to himself as his eyes had started closing on their own.
Bulma had insisted that he find Goku. She nagged him for only an hour before he left the house. He originally had every intent on searching for him before the woman's nagging, but decided to leave a little earlier then planned because he really did hate to hear her harp.
In his haste to leave, he hadn't picked up many supplies; taking with him only a few food and water capsules. He had depleted his food supplies a month ago and was working through the rest of his water.
Natually hunting wasn't a problem for the most part, but to take the time away from hsi search, he jsut wasn't willing to do it.
Falling into his overdue slumber Vegeta couldn't help but dream of the young Saiyan and why he had decided to hide elsewhere on the planet knowing full well that Bulma would help him if he ever needed it.
***
“Bulma,” Gohan said running into her office. The blue haired woman looked up from her paperwork. She had just finished signing a new contract with the clients that were still in their chairs in front of her desk.
Both men turned to face the young man as he came rushing to her desk. “Excuse me just a moment.” Bulma said forcing her chair back, and before the man could acknowledge her pardon, she had grabbed the demi by the front of his shirt and pulled him back out into the hallway.
“I found something you might be interested in!” He told her before she could lay into him. Holding up an old book with a young lady on the cover. Clad in a black lace teddy, the woman was bent down with hands folded over the front of herself hiding only the secret part from the photographer. The only thing innocent about here was her hair.
Bulma took only a sparing glance at it before she started letting loose a string of curses at the boy. Every other word Gohan could understand, but a few words he was sure that she had some how picked up from Vegeta, because most didn't even sound like any language he had ever heard in his entire life.
Gohan didn't really understand how a book with what Roshi had called “a work of art,” could upset his fathers childhood friend.
Bulma rattled on and on how young boys such as himself shouldn't bring such filth into her workplace and how dare he show up with it while she was with clients. Flipping to an inside page, Gohan held the book up to the ranting woman, and she instantly stopped. Grabbing the book instead she flipped through the pages herself.
On a few of the pages inside, someone had doodled little weird symbols all over the inside pages. Most were in permanent ink so you were unable to read 99% of the printed words inside.
“A few months ago Videl and I were cleaning out her fathers attic, and then my mom decided she needed hers cleaned out too.” Gohan revealed with a gloomy voice. “Trunks came across that book and, well, he kinda got mad that whoever last owned that book had drawn all over the inside of it.”
“Gohan, some of these symbols match that letter that was written in Saiyan!”
“I know.” He grinned. “It's Dad's old book!” Bulma glanced up from the book for only a moment to see the excitement in the young mans eyes.
“Apparently,” he continued, “Some part of Dad still remembers those symbols. Whether or not he would be able to read them or not is the true question.”
Bulma nodded her head while continuing to flip through the book. There were so many symbols in the book it was hard for Bulma to read. But she had studied that letter for so long, she had started to understand what a few of the symbols had meant.
Battle. Friendship. A couple of them had stuck out like a sore thumb to her. `What would Goku be doing with a book like this?'
“Gohan, do you happen to know when he owned this book?”
“Mom said that anything in the box that Trunks was going through, was from when Dad first started training under Master Roshi.”
“That explains the fucking book!” Bulma glanced behind her towards her office. “I think my clients have had enough about numbers and projection market ideas. I'll send them home. This book is the break that we needed.”
“Gohan, we need your Dad now. Vegeta has been trying to find him, but so far he hasn't come up with anything. I need you to try and locate him.” Bulma told the demi-Saiyan. “If you find Vegeta first, don't tell him your looking for your father or about this book. He refuses to translate this letter for me all the way, so I'll just have to ask Goku to do it for me. There is something on here he doesn't want me to know”
***
Crickets chirped all around as the darkness fell upon the rocks. All the deep shades of red seemed to darken further as the sun set over the valley. Each rock casting eerie shadows upon the other pillar rocks; all creating a glorious natural art show. Each rock fading from a painted orange into a deep blood red.
The young Saiyan leaned down over the other man as that one lay across the now black rock., the darkness of the night barely hiding either one of them. Shadows disappearing as the last of the light erased itself from the sky as if it had never been there. Over the blackening sky, stars began dotting themselves overhead, each becoming brighter.
Goku sat down near the other Saiyan. Days were getting shorter and the nights, colder. By sheer accident, Goku had come across Vegeta an hour ago and had just taken to watching him sleep. The rock was losing its warmth from the day quickly now, so the shorter Saiyan would be waking up soon.
Wondering what the man was doing out here, Goku became lost in his own thoughts. The closeness of himself verses the man laying near him, went unnoticed as he thought over everything that plagued his mind as of late.
The slumbering man's breathing began to speed up as his body started to feel the cold wind across his skin. As if it were a natural instinct to do so, the Vegeta rolled onto his side as the wind around him became too cold. Curling into a ball, he tucked his hands inward against his own chest.
Goku watched Vegeta do this, a small smile coming to his lips. All Z Fighters were able to sense powerful energy signatures in their sleep. Vegeta was no exception. For him to allow Goku this close even while he slept, meant that as far as friends go, Vegeta was able to trust him. The smile on Goku's lips grew even wider at this realization. With the exclusion of Bulma, and perhaps Trunks, Goku knew that no one had ever seen Vegeta like this.
Goku looked Vegeta over. `His clothes are more worse for wear then mine are.' Goku though glancing down at himself. Sure he hadn't grabbed a change of clothes and his weren't exactly dirty, but Vegeta wasn't asked to leave his home, `Was he?'
The wind around the Saiyans picked up more. Vegeta started to stir in his sleep. Goku glanced over at the other Saiyan once more. The air around them seemed to pick up more, leaving even the erect man to lean forward a bit.
`I can't leave Vegeta here.' Goku thought to himself. Pitching himself forward more, he reached for the other Saiyan. As soon as he slid his hands under the knees of the other man, the Ouji instant sprang to life.
Without really focusing on who was beside him, Vegeta was on his feet in an instant. His body instantly setting into a fighting stance.
“Vegeta!” Goku said gaining the princes focus upon himself. He lowered his head and started to get up from his crouched position.
Vegeta looked at the man in front of himself. Searching around for other chi's as well as scanning over the one in front of him, Vegeta relaxed a bit more. He had been searching for this man for months and yet her he was in front of him as if he were still dreaming.
“Where the FUCK were you! I've practically gone around the world three times tracking your retarded ass!” Vegeta all but screamed at the man in front of him. The wind whipping his bangs down across his face.
“Good to see you too, Vegeta.”
Vegeta glanced around taking in his location. He would never assume that where he fell asleep was where he was going to wake up. He had only made that mistake once, and had almost lost his life as a cub because of it. Never again would he do that.
Goku saw that Vegeta was making quick glances around. The darkness around them made Goku nervous too, and he wanted to start a fire so that they would have some light and heat. Since they were in a valley of rocks, there would be no wood around in order to make and keep up said fire.
“Are you hungry, Vegeta?” Goku asked. “I know this great place to catch fish up the mountain side.”Vegeta didn't answer at first still looking around at any possible attack vantage points in the rocks. He didn't intend on sleeping as long as he did, and now darkness had surrounded him while he slept, he instantly regretted his decision to bed here.
All the rocks in this utter darkness seemed to have opened caves up all around them. Maybe it was an optical illusion, since no light was able to shine into the areas, it still made the smaller man on high alert. Casting a glance at the Saiyan peasant for only a moment, he nodded his head.
“I will catch my own fish.” Nodding his own head in return, the younger lead the way out of the rock tower valley on foot.
As the two Saiyans walked on, Goku noticed that the other seemed to be lagging behind a bit. “Just a little further.”
“Kakarott, why did you leave?”
Goku heart seized up. He hadn't really expected the other man to ask him about that. “I'd rather not talk about that.”
Vegeta did not really expect an answer, so he said nothing. Both knowing the subject wasn't okay to be breached yet, and the other not pushing on it. The young man stopped to allow the other to catch up with him.
As Vegeta approached, he placed his hand upon Goku's shoulder. Goku looked at the other as he passed. Vegeta rarely opened up to anyone. The first time was on Namek when he was dying from Frieza's death blows. And the last was after the battle against Kid Buu when Vegeta showed Goku that their rivalry was over.
Regardless of whether or not Goku told him anything, Goku knew that he could open up to Vegeta and his secrets would never be told. The smile returned to him at the thought.
“The lakes just up ahead.”

Piccolo looked out at the stars. Lately he seemed to come up here more often ever since Dende had taken over as Guardian. The Namekian teen had gone to bed a few hours ago, so Piccolo was watching over the Earth for the moment.
It wasn't his job, but on occasions he would watch just to keep up with the current whereabouts of the other Z Fighters. He was more of a nosy person then his outer personality let on. Even more so since he fused with Nail. That namek was the biggest brown noser of them all.
Gohan had come to him a week ago asking if the Namekians could help locate his father. Neither Dende, nor himself were able to locate the earthbound Saiyan. They were able to track Vegeta the past few months as he searched for him, but his chi had bounced all over the globe too.
Piccolo walked to the south side of the lookout. Mr. Popo watching his every move. Since the fusion of Kami and Piccolo, he had learned to trust the Earth born Namek, but hadn't really forgotten what his father had done to the planet.
Noting eyes on his back, Piccolo looked over the edge off the lookout. All seemed fine as far as no enemies goes, but where had the wayward Saiyan gone? He knew that if a situation had come up, Goku would instantly pop out of nowhere with that fucking instant transmitting thing of his.
Piccolo tracked down Vegeta's chi to the south and it had rested there. The chi dipping low as if the Saiyan were sleeping. Watching that spot, Piccolo took note of the exhaustion the Saiyan must be going through. He was the only one out of all the demi Saiyans and Namekians to have actually tried to look for him the old fashion way.
Mr. Popo came up behind the statue like figure. “Vegeta has tried so hard to find him. Why, Mr. Popo wonders?” Piccolo looked down to the ebony man at his knees. He had actually been pondering that as well.
“Not knowing Vegeta as well as we all should, its hard to say.” The short man just nodding in reply.
Mr. Popo walked back over to the garden he had just come from attending, leaving Piccolo to his thoughts. The namek never moved until all of a sudden Goku's chi appeared right next to Vegeta's out of the blue.
“Holy SHIT!” Piccolo yelled. The sudden appearance of the Sayian's chi seemed like a smack in the face. And there was something Piccolo had never sensed about it before.
Goku's chi seemed to hold such a pained emotion to it, that Piccolo wasn't able to keep a concentrated point on it. Sensing it was directly next to the other sole full blooded member of the Saiyan race, Piccolo instantly took to the air, intent on finding Goku.
`Gohan?` Piccolo said reaching out with his thoughts. He needed to tell Gohan where to find Goku, before Goku decided to do another disappearing act on them all.

Vegeta looked at the fish Goku had just caught. It was just as big as himself, if not bigger. `Earth sure knows how to grow them.' Vegeta thought to himself. Goku knew that Vegeta was exhausted and refused to let Vegeta catch his own fish. He had tried to argue back saying that no amount of exhaustion would keep him from hunting his food.
“Kakarotto, nothing you say is going to make me change my mind. I refuse to allow you to provide for me. It is not your right to do so!”
“Not my right?” Goku repeated slowly, not exactly understanding the word usage.
“Exactly, now we're getting somewhere.” Vegeta had long since taken off all his clothes leaving the pants as his only article of clothing left on.
“We're getting nowhere. This fish is enough to feed the both of us for tonight!” Goku repeated.
“I can't have you hunting for me, regardless of my current state Kakarott.”
“Why not? Is someone going to see that the all mighty Ouji can't catch a fish?” Goku said teasing the prince.
Vegeta ground his teeth together. “No, you fucking baka. You CAN'T hunt for me.”
“Obviously, I just did.” He said missing the point.
Vegeta shook his head. He refused a long time ago to reveal things about Saiyans because certain things just didn't overlay with how Earth customs go.
“Damn it!” Vegeta said spinning around. Heading towards the lake, Vegeta prepared himself to jump in. Just as he was about to, however, two very strong hands wrapped themselves around the smaller ones waist.
Lifting the smaller one back to the campfire, he plopped that one down in front of a freshly grilled fish flank. Vegeta locked his hands against his chest and pouted.
“Explain to me why you can't eat this fish. It's here. It's cooked.” Goku said. Sitting down next to the other man.
Vegeta pushed the other man aside playfully. “Your not my clan.” Vegeta said choosing his words carefully.
“Clan.” Goku said, repeating once again Vegeta's choice of words. “Is this another `Secret of the Saiyans' thing.”
Vegeta smirked at Goku's wording. Sometimes Vegeta often wondered if maybe he wasn't a bad influence on the younger man. “No Kakarott, its not a secret. Clans or `Tawi' as they were called on our planet, were family units. Only clansmen could hunt for their members. If there was a rouge Saiyan, or without a clan, then it was because he was banished.” Vegeta said. “Or in our case, the fucking planet was blown to the four winds.”
Goku grabbed a piece of flesh from the fish in front of him. He handed it to the prince as he said, “Well, since we are the only ones left alive, is there a way for us to become clan members?”
Vegeta took the fish, but did not eat it. The smell of the fish was getting to him though. He merely replied. “There are a few methods, but you are doing it incorrectly.” Putting the fish down in front of Goku. “I told you, I will not eat what you catch.” Walking towards the lake he turned to look over his shoulder. Goku wasn't following him this time.
“By you offering me that food, you just implied I was weak.” Vegeta said not missing the sad look that crossed Goku's face. “And, just so you know, by offering someone outside of your clan food, to put in words that you can understand. You just asked me out!” Vegeta laughed, sprinting backwards towards the lake so that he would not miss the look of shock over the other Saiyans face.
“Your not my type, Kakarott!” He said jumping into the lake.
