Chapter Six: Unknown Symbols

Goku watched the lake surface for any sign of the prince. He had been under for thirty minutes now. Goku knew he, himself was able to hold his breath for half an hour, due to Master Roshi's training while he was a young cub.

Finishing the last of his own fish, he got up, content with his meal. Walking to the waters edge he peered inside. The ponds surface rippled across as the wind blew over it harshly. Goku was starting to get worried.

`Vegeta was tired an hour ago.' Goku thought taking his shirt off quickly. Taking a few steps into the water he quickly dove in, his satisfaction of having a meal forgotten quickly.

Goku swam down deeper into the water body. The firelight from the beach barely flickered the top of the water as Goku dove under. Every foot deeper he went, Goku could feel the darkness surround him; the water getting colder with each stroke.

Before long, Goku swam to the clear bottom. Even thou the water was dark, since it was so pure, you could still see clearly. Goku glanced up to the rippling surface of the water. Each ripple above containing just a hint of red from the firelight on the beach. But unlike to rough harsh waves above, its undersides reveled its own gentile, quite shadows. `Its just like the northern lights!'

Goku looked back down at his own surroundings. The pebbled floor of the lake seemed to reflect the sparse light from the surface. Glancing around at the floor, Goku took note that none of the surrounding area had it's plane disturbed recently.

If it had been, there would have been residue kicked up from its perturbed state. Swimming onwards, he followed the pebbles out towards where he would guess the middle of the lake bed was located. Swimming upwards into a standing position, Goku swivelled around attempting to locate Vegeta while floating aimlessly in the water.

No sign of Vegeta made itself known as he swam to the surface for air. His own thirty minutes apparently slipped by without him knowing.
“Vegeta?” He called out. Just because he didn't see him under the surface, didn't mean that Vegeta might not have resurfaced while he was down there. Goku could see that the beach was gaining white crests upon its shores as the wind blew the water into a froth. The campfire dwindling into smaller flames as the wind forced it down.

Storm clouds hovered in the sky that hadn't been there before. Certain areas on Earth were well known for their unpredictable weather patterns. Apparently this place was one of them. At the rate those clouds were coming in, Goku guessed that it would start raining soon, making it impossible for the Saiyans to bed there for the night.

Taking one last look around the surface, Goku quickly inhaled more air and dove down once more. The quiet of the water quickly replaced the rushing of the wind on the surface. More desperate now, Goku began looking in every crevice that he didn't think to look in before. He might not have covered the entire lake yet, but he knew that there were not many areas to hide.

Fish scattered in the tall Saiyans wake. The largest ones seemed to sense that he wasn't there for them at the moment, but they still kept their distance. Goku sparsely glanced in their direction.

Goku just passed over a deep rock shelf when he thought he spotted something blue. Quickly altering his course, he swam for the item. As he got closer, it jetted away.

`Just a damn fish!' Goku swore. Glancing around he took notice that the rock shelving seemed to have a break in it. `If I hadn't gone for that fish, I never would have seen this!' Glancing into the area, he saw that the break went deeper into the ground. The light from the surface seemed unable to go into it any further which meant that it was deep.

The dark cavern itself was in the shape of a half lidded eye. Forming a small ball of ki, Goku shined it into the cavern. It seemed that if one thought about it, you probably could fit into it. Goku gripped onto the broken surface and pulled himself into the fracture.

As Goku pulled himself in, he had to turn himself sideways. A few sharp rocks nudging into his stomach and made little scratches as he passed; Goku winced from a few of them. Sliding in more, he could feel the scratches starting to itch.

Dropping his ki, he rubbed at one of the more irritating areas. Goku glanced around, noticing that even though he was now far underground, there was a light source inside of this cave. `If I hadn't extinguished my ki, I never would have seen it.' Goku thought pushing further towards it.

The eye tunnel started turning upwards and the light became more brilliant from above. The tunnel began to open up further along as his head broke the surface inside a large air pocketed room.

The prince looked down at the head poking out of the water. Leaning down he smirked as Goku took notice of him. Relief seeming to wash over his features at the sight of the smaller Saiyan.

“So, it was your turn to look for me, huh?” Vegeta said, his ki radiating around him.

`So he was the light I saw...' Goku thought to himself

“I got worried.” Goku said climbing out of the water into the rock bubble. The walls were dry even though they were probably a good 50 feet under the lake bed. Reaching out, he rubbed the rock surface. The rock looked smooth, it had a sandpaper-like feel to it.

Vegeta watched the other Saiyan exploring the underground room. He had done the same thing when he found the room half an hour ago.

Pulling his hand away from the walls, he turned to the other. “I didn't know that you could get fresh air underwater.” he admitted.

“Ice and plants.”

“Excuse me?”

“Ice. Plants. That is how you get fresh air like this under any kind of ground that seems isolated from the world. Although it is not all fresh, it is more stale then anything.” Vegeta said.

“Ice. Right....” Goku said losing interest. He hated it when people were making fun of him. Just because he seemed like a child didn't mean he had the intelligence of one.

Vegeta strolled over to the wall where Goku had just put his hand. Wiping a finger across the wall, he showed Goku his finger. It was covered in a light green dust.

“These are the plants. You should have been taught when you were in school that plants make light in the sun. Photosynthesis. There is no light under the water now, but at one point this place was probably exposed to the air. Thus making oxygen.” Vegeta said to the taller Saiyan.

Goku turned to face him. Looking down at his own hands, they too were covered in the thick green dust too.

“These plants are microscopic, but there must be billions upon billions of them in here adapting to the darkness.” Goku nodded realizing that Vegeta wasn't making fun of him.

“So how did it get covered then?” Goku asked.

“Easy. Ice. Not a small block of ice, mind you,” Vegeta continued pointing to the ground. Goku's eyes looked down at the floor where Vegeta was pointing. Long thick uneven marks scattered against the ground. Goku looked back at vegeta, a confused look on his face.

“I read in one of Onna's books about what your planet has labeled as an `Ice Age.' Giant glaciers passed over the land breaking off into pieces. All of those glaciers dragging debris as they slid over the landscape.” Goku nodded urging Vegeta to continue.

“As the glaciers receded, melting, breaking off, one chunk could have been forced under the weight of others.

“After maybe a few years or so, it was wedged down into the ground; the glacier on top wedging it further under the topsoil and into the bedrock. It could be that the glaciers dragging all the debris across the land created a mound of dirt, as it was, over the small fragment of ice that was wedged in the ground.

“After however long it took the ice to melt the large glacier made the lake above, while the small fragment became this cave where these plants have thrived ever since. How an opening came to reach this bubble could have been caused by the debris scrapping over the landscape and just happened to drop the rocks in the right place. Another possibility could be that it was caused by a lake water current over hundreds of years.” Vegeta explained. “Your planet's scientists have come up with theories regarding anomalies from the past, the ice age theory just happens to be an occurrence that has happened on other planets that know the theory to be fact.”

Goku smiled at the other Saiyan. Vegeta during the entire explanation never downgraded him for not knowing such things. Never once called him an idiot for being uneducated as he was.

Vegeta looked back at the water opening. “We should get back, I never did catch a fish.”

“Why were you under here in the first place?”

Vegeta looked up at the taller man as his blue ki radiated in the dark place. “Peculiarity is a Saiyan curse.” he replied chuckling.

Piccolo kicked over the rain soaked logs. It wasn't possible for the Saiyans to be to far ahead of him. Gohan who had come a few minutes after himself and together they were searching the campsite.

Gohan held up Goku's orange gi shirt. “Dad's probably under the water.”

Piccolo glanced over the lake. The rainfall moved against the surface in an ominous coating. The white crests slapping the shore in a harsh manner. “It's a possibility considering the underside of these fire logs are still shading red embers.”

Gohan walked under one of the willow tree's near the banks. It wasn't dry under there, but it wasn't allowing as much rain to penetrate under its leaves. Piccolo, however, stood under the rain. His ki shielding him from the actual onslaught.

Both kept a weary eye on the lake surface hoping for any glimpse Goku. “I hope Dad's alright.”
Piccolo didn't even register that he had heard the young man. Half an hour passed with nether moving from their post. The rain slowly dying down for a little bit, although they were still surrounded by the dark clouds.

Gohan had started to get anxious. If his father had been down in the lake, he would have come up for air a long time ago. Getting ready to mention this to his mentor, he stopped himself.

A little closer then the center of the lake, two figures had surfaced. The moment both surfaced, one of them had begun to float on the water top while doing the backstroke in a long playful manner. The other figure had an eternal flame swept hair even thou they had both come out of water and this one was slightly further away from the other.

Gohan ran from under the willow branches and went right up to the lake shore. The rain was lightly tapping on him as he stood at the shore awaiting his father.

“Gohan!” Goku called out as he got closer to the shore. He flipped himself to a standing position as he swam closer to the shore. “What are you doing her?” His ki flashed around him as he levitated himself above the water. His powerful ki rolling over him drying him entirely.

Flying for the shore, he set down a few feet from his son. His ki too, became a handless umbrella to keep him dry. His son closed the distance the moment he touched down and gave his father a hug.

Vegeta however did not fly out of the water, only swam till he could walk on the bottom while keeping his head above the water. The water helping to carry him to shore in his slightly ineffectual state.

Carring a slightly smaller fish then Goku had originally caught, Vegeta proudly walked his fish over to where he and Goku had been sitting only a couple hours prior.

Piccolo watched as Vegeta gave a slight pout then a determined face towards the fire logs. If the other two had seen it across the Saiyans face, they would have laughed, but Piccolo wasn't like humans and found humor in everything, although coming from Vegeta, it was pretty funny.

Veeta dropped his fish in the dirt and looked around at all the soused branches on the ground. Grumbling a bit, Vegeta walked away in search of drier logs.

Gohan pulled back from his hug. “Dad, It's good to see you. Why did you leave?” Gohan said rushing right to the point. Goku's smile slowly weaned from his face as Gohan asked the question. He didn't want to answer Vegeta , one of his close friends, But Gohan was family. He didn't want to answer him either, but Gohan was more like his mother then he realized.

Looking back between Gohan and Piccolo, he let out a sigh. “Well, I had no where's to go anyway. I figured now would be as good a tiem as any to roam Earth. Anytime before when I was traveling Earth before I couldn't enjoy myself. I was always roaming form some reason other then to enjoy my self. Even as a kid, I was training for tournaments, or searching for the Dragonballs. I couldn't even tell you where Manbullo is!” Goku said. `It wasn't the entire truth, but it also wasn't a lie either.'

“Dad, if you wanted to travel then why didn't yo tell anyone where you were going? Why did you just up and disappear like that? We were worried about you! No note stating you were leaving. No calls saying you were okay.” Goku smirked at how much like Chichi his son was becoming. Goku then frowned. He didn't want his son to end up like Chichi.

“Hell, what was even more amazing was that your disappearing even got Vegeta away from his Gravity Chamber long enough to search for you. That's saying something if you get an obsessive compulsive person like him out of his habits.” Gohan continued.

“Perhaps, “Piccolo said interrupting Gohan's rant, “You should tell Goku why you were asked to find him.”

Goku looked at Piccolo. Gohan wasn't out here on his own accord? If it was divorce papers, he would help Vegeta to light the campfire with them.

“Oh right,” Gohan pulled down his green Gi and pulled a paper out from the inside pocket. Handing it to his father he saw him visually slump.

“Bulma wants your help on something Dad.” Goku slightly perked up at mentioning the item was from Bulma. Opening the paper, he saw a computer printout of some familiar symbols on it. “She told me that when I found you, to tell you that this is from Raditz to Vegeta. But strangely it was on a computer at Capsule Corporation.”

“So.”

“Dad, That bastard never was anywhere near C.C. Computers. The question is how the hell did it get there? And what does it say vegeta only translated the top portion of it for Bulma, but the rest he never translated for her. She wants to know what it says.”

“What makes her think I know what it says?”

“Because you drew some of those same hieroglyphics in your `school textbooks' from when you were training with Master Roshi.”

Piccolo was watching the scene with vague interest. He was pretty sure the previous subject regarding Goku's disappearance would have ben far more interesting to listen to now that said subject was changed.

“So can you tell us what they say?”

“Nope.”
Gohan and Piccolo both faulted down to the ground... both twitching. (A.N. I love it in Animes and Mangas when characters fall over in shock.)

“What do you mean `nope'?” Gohan asked picking himself back up. “You drew them before!”

“I drew them because they were familiar to me at the time. Seeing a picture doesn't mean I know what the fuck it says!” Goku shouted at his son. His sudden rage coming from no where. “I bet you could draw a couple of these symbols, does that mean you can read it too?”

Gohan was taken aback. Goku's anger wasn't unjustified thou. “I'm sorry Dad.” Goku looked at his oldest as that one lowered his head to the ground. “I'm sorry that I wasn't more supportive of your issues with Mom.” Gohan admitted.

“I should have been more understanding that you needed your space, and I'm sorry for intruding.”

Goku reached out and gave his son a hug. `So Gohan does know what's bothering me' Resting his head to the side, he stood back from his son.

“We'll let you be then huh?” Gohan asked his father.

“Well, I could use some advice?” Goku asked putting the paper under his own shirt.

Piccolo watched as those two talked things over, every once in a while, Piccolo checked over his shoulder for the Saiyan Prince.

“Australia.” Gohan said.

“Excuse me?' Goku said questioningly.

“Australia. That's where Manbullo is.” Goku couldn't help but smile at his son.

The rain, once it slowed down, seemed to stop rather then start back up again. Vegeta searched all over for dry logs, but it was getting to the point where he would rather just ki blast the fish fried, instead of fire roasting it. `But it just changes the flavor so much,' he grumbled. `I'de rather eat it raw, but there is nothing worse then Sushi!'

Heading back towards camp, Vegeta took notice that the trees gave way to a small clearing. Creeping closer, Vegeta allowed himself to slip into a silent mode. He saw something dark looming within the clearing.

Crouching down low, he moved up to the tall grass that seemed to grow only in this small hallow of ground. He could see the rain had matted the grass in the center, leaving the outer edges that had the trees hanging over it, almost untouched.

Crickets chirped around him but not another creature made a sound. Vegeta's own breath seemed to stop as he saw a deer no more then 100 feet away step into the clearing. The doe never even saw him as she stepped out into the nook of grass.

Vegeta was hungry and deer meat was more nutritious then Fish, and would make a bigger meal for himself. Almost laying down on the wet ground, Vegeta just continued to watch the deer graze in the grass.

He lay with both arms slightly tucked under him, palms out and down; the better to push off the ground with. His head and chest were lined up against the ground almost parallel with each other. His stomach, which was slightly raised as his legs were by his sides in a tiger crouch-like manner.

Without making a single sound, he leaned back putting all his weight to the front. Pushing with his back feet, he jolted forward pushing up with his hands and leapt across the clearing within a split second. Grabbing the doe's head, Vegeta snapped it up before it even knew that someone else as in the clearing.

A small sound gasped out of the doe's mouth as its neck was snapped back. The doe leaned to its side as it fell to the ground. Vegeta licked his lips laying down next to his kill.

Grabbing the lowest rib of the doe, Vegeta snapped it outwards making a rather large hole in the side. Blood leaked out of the animal, trailing down the tan stomach and colored the dirt red in the wake of the spill. Vegeta leaned down lapping up some of the blood as it rolled down the deer's side.

Reaching into the hole and upwards, he reached around on the inside. Locating what he wanted, he pulled out the slow pulsing heart. Bitting directly into it, he ate it while the blood was still warm in the organ. Blood seeping down his face with each bite, he continued on with the rest of his fresh dinner.

The others had left leaving Goku to his thoughts. Pulling back out the letter, Goku looked down at the symbols. He recognized each and every symbol as if he had done them everyday of his life. Of course he could read it. But just a quick glance revealed why Vegeta didn't translate the rest for Bulma. It was a private letter between the two.

Vegeta walked over to the other Saiyan depositing the grass over the logs that were already there. Igniting it with his ki, Vegeta picked up the fish that he had tossed down when the brat and the Namek showed up. The smell of the fish had become much stronger then when he had first caught the fish.
Goku looked up at the sudden movement out of the corner of his eyes. He hadn't expected the other Saiyan to come back at all. Normally when Vegeta left, Goku didn't see him again for days till there next spar. He quickly shoved the letter back down his shirt.

Vegeta dropped the fish right into the fire making Goku laugh. “Vegeta, would you like to use the spit?” He asked pointing to the stick he set aside after he ate his fish from it.

Not even sparing a glance at where Goku was pointing, Vegeta snorted and just sat down near the fire. Legs and arms crossed as he sat watching the fire. Every now and then he added a new log.

“Uh, Vegeta? Are you okay?” Vegeta glanced at him.

“Yes, baka.” He answered shortly.

Fidgeting around for a few more minutes, Goku couldn't take it anymore. “It's just that your shirt, well, its covered in blood.”

“Kakarotto, use your nose. Does the blood smell like my blood?”

`Why didn't I think about that?' Vegeta sat still while watching the others nose twitch. Goku could smell the animals blood. Goku himself barely recognized the scent, but was able to distinguish what it was. He himself rarely caught that type of animal.

“A deer.”

Vegeta smirked at the statement. His eyes returned to the fire. “I had to eat something. That I can at least eat raw.”

Goku thought about that for a moment. `What would raw meat taste like?'

Goku seemed lost in his thoughts. Vegeta took note that the fish in the fire was ready. He surrounded his hand with a ki shield, reached into the fire and pulled the hot fish out.

He began eating the fish just as quickly as he had the deer. Since he hadn't eaten in a while prior to the deer, he was still starving.

Goku thought about the letter while watching Vegeta eat. He couldn't understand how he was able to read letters he was pretty sure he never looked at. Even if he had seen the letters, there would have been no way he would know what they look like considering he wa sonly a baby when his grandfather found him. He would have to ask Vegeta about it, but how could he bring it up without letting him know he knew about the letter?

To Be Continued...

Authors Note: December 4th, 2007
You have no idea how hard it was not to put “little fishies” in that first bit!

I suppose the idea of the glacier could actually happen. I'm not sure. I just thought it would be a great explanation, and it turns out it was.

My teacher would go nuts with all the foreshadowing crap they tend to spew about.

“Oh glaciers! They represent Goku's future lust for Vegeta... The water represents the cycle of life. And since you're AU, Saiyans can have babies, there ya go... blahblah.” One teacher might say...

No dear teachers... that is not why I wrote that in the story, I wrote it because I like glaciers and I like water stories. HOW THE FUCK DO YOU HAVE TO OVER ANALYZE THINGS WHY CAN'T IT BE BECAUSE I CHOSE BLUE BECAUSE I THOUGHT BLUE WOULD FIT BETTER! And because its Vegeta's favorite!

*huff*puff* okay calming down now... Its one of the reasons I never understood English Literature class. Why do teachers have to psych-analyze things?

Don't/didn't you ever hate those questions on the final exam stating “Why do you think Edger Allen Poe wrote about a raven in such a dark image?”

MAYBE HE HAD A FEAR OF BIRDS, YOU DUMB BITCH!” XD

As far as the doe... I'm not sorry. You forget how vicious Vegeta was at one point. How might you consider Saiyans to hunt... with forks and knives? I WOULD have continued with the eating of the deer thing, but I figured some people probably couldn't even stomach what little I did write... ^.^;

^_^ Love always dsh
