Five hours have already passed. And he was about as far as he was from saving Trunks the moment the needle hit his veins. He had the computers scanning every planet they passed hoping for the signals to go off, alerting him there was Amorites, bats, near.
Vegeta sat before the main screen, trying to find answers from the black space and stars but none were coming to him. He has never once had this problem before. No diseases ever plagued Sayians. They were immune, to everything. But Trunks human blood, wasn’t. And now the boy was dying, slowly, and didn’t even know it.
Could he tell him? No, hell no. Trunks will not know. Not now.
An intercom link came up, flashing on the large window, and at first Vegeta thought it was Gidoen, only to find the link coming from Earth. Did he want to speak to his mate? Could he lie to her when she asks if everything is okay? Did he want too?
No, he didn’t want to, but he had too. He wouldn’t prove to her he was a failure. Not just yet.
He clicked on and there was her smiling face. “So everything fixed? Where are you heading? And what are you looking for? What the hell are Amorites?”
Vegeta shook his head. He had forgotten that the main base on Earth followed his every move. Sometimes, he hated the fact that his female was the most brilliant creature on Earth. He has never been able to get away with anything. How soon would it be till she found out about Trunks? “I am searching for Gideon.”
“Looking for fights still at your age?” He narrowed his eyes. She knew Sayians don’t age as badly as humans. “I’m just playing, geez. Look who’s here?” Bulma bent down from screen only to popped back up with Bra in her arms.
“Hi, Daddy.”
Her little voice caught him off guard but he was actually glad to see her innocent face. The only one of his family that thought him to be a hero. Her big eyes shined up at him, waiting for him to speak, “Princess.”
She giggled happily. “I miss you, Daddy. I want you to come home. When are you coming home? Are coming home soon? Mommy bought me a puppy. I named her pumpkin. Are you coming back tomorrow?”
“Soon.”
“Where’s Trunks?”
“Sleeping.”
Bulma cut in before she could speak, “Go to Grandma.”
“Bye Daddy, I love you.” She dropped the child and smiled at her husband. “It’s been two weeks. You think you’ll be getting home a lot sooner then planned?”
“It is possible.”
“I hope, cause I kind of miss being told I’m worthless all the time.” She winked and received his playful smirk.
Vegeta was relieved when she ended the transmission. His attitude went back into the dispirited state he had been in since he rested Trunks’ body on the bed. He held his head in his hands, his stomach growling at him for the neglection and his eyelids were asking to rest but he knew it wasn’t possible, not when he needed to get the cure.
A scream caught his attention, his Sayian speed ripped through the ship and got to Trunks’ bedroom, finding the boy, panting, wide eyed, sweat and tears falling down his face and his body shaking uncontrollably. Vegeta watched with gritted teeth as his son’s face crumbled in unendurable sadness. Trunks buried his face in his hands, sobs echoing the empty ship. Vegeta took a step closer, not knowing what to do but knowing it was his responsibility to be here. He hadn’t expected Trunks to react like this. Vegeta was hoping the silent staring or even complete ignorance of what had happened. But then again, both were worse then this, he had to admit. Trunks screaming would release the pain inside and hopefully help him to get over the things that he had seen. But this wasn’t something Vegeta knew not how to handle.
“I didn’t do anything.” Trunks cried, rocking himself, “I didn’t do anything. I didn’t do anything.”
“You couldn’t have done anything.” Vegeta tried to interrupt but Trunks didn’t even know he was there.
“She was screaming in my head.” The boys fists began to hit his skull, “Screaming, screaming. All her thoughts. All her pain. In my head.”
Vegeta growled, grasping the boy’s hands and holding them down on the bed. “Shut up, boy. Stop it.”
His blood shot eyes widen upon seeing his father there and a calmness over came him and his sobs ebbed away. Only tears rolled down and the shaking was uncontrollable. But he was awake, and fully aware of his surroundings. “I didn’t do anything.” He whispered sadly, his face contorting with his pain. “I didn’t. Do. Anything.” Trunks emphasized, tears building up in his eyes once more.
“You couldn’t do anything.”
“I could have powered up. I could have killed them. But I didn’t.” He dropped his head as sobs once more began to escape him quietly.
“Trunks. Look at me.” Vegeta released his hands and gripped the boy’s chin, to bring his eyes up. “Look at me.” Trunks finally obeyed. “You were powerless. Just as I was. You couldn’t have done anything to save her.”
Vegeta let go of the boy and stood back, watching his son for any signs that he understood. Trunks’ body still shook with powerful quakes every few seconds as he wiped his tears away only for more to replace them. A few minutes past before he found his voice. “How did I get there? I remember I couldn’t breath, and the next thing I remember there were bodies....hanging from the ceiling. And Mischa being poked at by these snakes. And I couldn’t get up.” Trunks blue eyes went up to his father, “Where were you? Why. Why did you leave me there?”
Guilt caused his throat to dry up. He swallowed heavily, gritting his teeth and folding his arms, trying to figure out if a lie was better told then the actual truth. But he was already telling one lie. No reason to add to his problems. “I thought it was safe. And you needed oxygen.”
“Safe?” Trunks question, wiping his face once more and laying back against the bed. “Nothing’s safe. Not here.”
“Trunks-”
“I want to go home. Dad, please.” Tears began to build once more in Trunks eyes and sobs were constrained in his throat “I want to go home. Just take me home.” He groaned painfully, begging.
“We cannot. This will make you stronger. You are too emotional.--”
“Too emotional!” Trunks snapped his body up. “I just watched someone be pulled apart, one piece at a time. Hearing her pleas for help in my head and I did nothing.” His anger faded and his sadness returned heavily. “I’m not strong like you dad, I can’t take it. Please, just let me go home.” He fell back against the bed once more, curling to his side as he cried violently into his pillow.
Vegeta turned out of the room, not knowing where to go but needing to get away. He suddenly felt very claustophobic. He wanted out. He wanted away. He needed to go beat up something, get out his own anger for himself. Hating the very existence of him. Wishing he had died years ago before ever having offspring. Never before had he seen Trunks so damaged. Not even when he killed Epeon. This was a completely different thing.
He breathed heavily through his nose, flexing his cheek muscles and wishing to all hell there was something close by to destroy. The pain his boy was in was all because of him, because of his stupidity. Gods, if he could send the ship back home he would have done just as Trunks had asked. But he couldn’t. To make his life so much worse, he couldn’t go back to Earth. Because to Trunks unknown knowledge, he was dying.
Vegeta cursed his luck, cursed everything that was going wrong. Hating only himself and the way the universe was so corrupt. And knowing that it was because of him and because of his past, that they were here.
The ship shifted and the lights snapped off. The voice of Bulma whispered, terrified, “Something has us.”
Vegeta looked at the window, seeing nothing but stars. Great, another thing that was going to go wrong. “Well, get us out of it.”
The main computer growled frustrated, “Duh! I tried that. The power has been shut off.”
“Why are you still on?”
“I’m a battery.” She answered proudly. “Can only be shut off by switch.”
Vegeta mentally thought about looking for the switch but instead brought his attention to the screen. “Bring up side cameras.” On the glass came eight separate pictures and right in the center was the massive ship that threatened their lives. It was almost the size of Earth’s moon but was barely visible, only the outline could be made out. That was until their cloaking device was shut off. Nine hundred round windows faced them with more then forty floors. Compared to their ship they only looked like a small peanut. “Amorites.”
“Dad?” Trunks sniffed, wiping his face as he stepped in the room. “What is it?”
“Exactly what we are looking forn.” Vegeta felt such relief. Twenty three more hours until Trunks had to be returned to the research planet with the cure. Trunks was safe now. He wanted to bask in the relief but a comlink flashed on a creature appeared on screen. The long snout and unique horn on it’s head made it obvious what it was. What was confusing for Vegeta was why these creatures were involved with the Amorites.
“What is your purpose here?” The yellow eyes burned into the two like fire. “You look familiar.”
“I am Prince Vegeta.”
Those bright orbs slit upon that name and the lips flared to show teeth. “What are you doing back in space?”
“I’ve come to end Lord Gideon’s reign.”
The creature shook it’s head with small laughter. “How honorable of you, Prince.” The screen went blank.
Trunks brows knit “Dad, what was that?”
“A Pure Horn. But the bigger question is what are they doing here?”
“What’s a pure horn? That looked exactly like a unicorn.”
“A fairytale creature on Earth, yes. But made up, far from it.”
“Oh oH! I know this one.” Betsy spoke up quickly interrupting Vegeta to his dismay. “Pure horns, are human unicorns. Two were sent to every planet that served a purpose when evil began to rule the universe, like millions of years ago. The only reason Earth was saved on so many occasions. Every planet that held a Pure horn was saved from destruction. But Earth like many other planets found these creatures and tried to kill them. So they had to leave and go back home. Because there are only two hundred in the universe.”
Vegeta rolled his eyes and sat down while Trunks took some water out of the fridge. “Every ten years, only one pair of Pure Horns can mate.”
“Why are they so special?”
Vegeta took the bottle of water his son handed him. “Evil fears them. For their horn can kill anything with just a touch and, they themselves can’t die.”
“Then why didn’t they kill Buu? Or any other evil thing?”
“Because when they use their horn, they die.”
“Why don’t they like you?”
Vegeta chuckled and looked up at his son, “Because, I worked with Frieza. And was commanded by him to kill the one we captured. And I did so.”
“But you just said they can’t die.”
“Not by any sword, bullet, or blast. Go change. And grab a few food capsules. I assure you nothing they have, we will want to eat.” Trunks disappeared and Vegeta prepared himself for a battle. His Sayian blood was burning with anticipation for a fight but another side of him was a bit worried, for a lack of a better word. He needed to win this, to save Trunks. Why he was worried about that he didn’t know, he was the strongest now. Right up there with Kakarot. There shouldn’t be need to worry.
The ship hit the docking area, jerking Vegeta out of his thoughts. Trunks came up beside him, looking only forty percent better due to the fact that his eyes were still swollen and depression surrounded his aura. Vegeta straightened his shoulders and looked beside him, “No father, no Earth. Computer, take down these markings and put them in the log.” The door was then forced open and the ramp dropped with a crash. Soldiers flew in, and twenty surrounded them within two seconds. Trunks was amazed by their speed, he hadn’t even seen them. But Vegeta was hardly impressed. The leader started up the steps, his footfalls echoing, his talons striking the metal. Trunks eyes widened when the creature finally came into sight. It looked like an enlarged bat. The face was flat were the nose would have been and the eyes whiter then paper with a pitch black complexion. The wings with tucked in his back, and his arms stretched out to long pointed nails about six inches long.
The mouth opened and the words that escaped where Sayian-di to Trunks recollection. “Prince Vegeta, how amazing to see you alive.” The scary white eyes moved to Trunks. “And who is this?”
“He is mute.” Vegeta answered. “He is half-sayian, half something else. I found him on Kino Desta.”
“Interesting. Will you and your counterpart follow me please?”
“I’ve come to kill you, Gideon.”
“Oh, Prince, where is your subtleness. But then again, as I remember it, you had none. I thought age would destroy your sense of self-worth but apparently I was mistaken. Follow me. You have no choice here. For once in your life, will you ask before you kill?”
Vegeta was silent on that one. The man’s reaction to his words confused him. He wanted to know what was going on. So against his better judgement again, Vegeta followed and Trunks was right on his side.
Would this once again prove to a trap? Will his son end up paying a different price?
These creatures were killing everyone that worked in Frieza’s army. They must have something planned for him. So why follow? Why be taken into the belly of their ship when he could just kill them now and retreat on his own vessel with his son along with him?
A simple answer that was going to nag at him the rest of his life. He didn’t want to kill anymore. Trust was something Bulma always forced upon him. Even when someone betrays you, it doesn’t mean others will. He had to trust in Bulma and hope that her advice will stand through.
The pain, she cried, the heartache.
The lies, she cried, the heartache.
The life, she cried, the heartache
And your life, she cried.
And the heartache.
