Forbidden Encounter

Chapter13

The new house was awful; Gohan had already decided he hated it. It was too small and nothing like home… This whole neighborhood was too crowded and too noisy. He knew he was going to hate his new school too, Orange Star High, even the name sucked. The only good thing about living in Satan City was being closer to Bulma and Trunks. Maybe even Vegeta could be counted, but Gohan doubted anything would change between him and Vegeta. The Saiyan Prince had just saved his life last night… again and that would probably make Vegeta even more certain that he was just some dumb kid that still couldn't even control his own power yet. Besides, he was pretty sure Vegeta would like seeing his father actually act like a Saiyan.

Gohan growled. He had been up all night, trying to make sense of what had happened. He knew he had been wrong to attack that girl. Even if she was too young for his dad, she was still just a girl. Bulma had been right; he never should have taken it out on her. But still, she was the reason all of this had happened. If she hadn't come along and decided to wreck everything they would still be living at home, and he wouldn't have to wonder where his dad was and why he left without ever saying good-bye.

He shivered in the warm breeze as he remembered the look in his father's eyes when he saw the girl lying on the floor. He was pure Saiyan in that moment, rage and instinct were clearly threatening to take control. Something inside of Gohan had been instinctively ready to answer that challenge, so he had continued to taunt him, in spite of Vegeta's warning… or maybe, he thought, because of it. He saw it, but he just wasn't ready to accept that his father was not himself. It had been so easy for his dad to hurt him… both the look in his eyes and his father's skill said clearly that he should've been dead…

Vegeta had saved him. He was the only one that could have. Piccolo had warned him often enough before not to let his emotions blind him, but damn it he should have stood a better chance against his dad than that, shouldn't he??? After all, he had been the one to kill Cell… Then again, he thought with some shame, Goku and Vegeta had done all the work, in the last part of the battle and Piccolo even had to tell him when to fire. Vegeta and his father had attacked relentlessly, hitting Cell with every attack they had.

Yes, they were both stronger than he was… even back then, and Vegeta still trained daily, always determined to surpass Goku. Over the last year, his father had started slacking off in his training, and even in his sparring matches with Vegeta, but the Saiyan Prince had never said anything about it… Gohan had felt the shockwave of Vegeta's power… he didn't need to try to sense his father's Ki to know that Vegeta had won. Something inside of him even said that Vegeta had not killed him. But if his father really wasn't coming home anyway, as Vegeta had warned him… Did it really matter?

The thought of going inside and knowing that his dad would never be there again left him both enraged, and a little afraid, so he had been staying out late, and doing nothing. Since his mom had always kept him chained to his studies, and his dad had spent the rest of his time training him, Gohan didn't really know anyone his own age. Most of the kids in this neighborhood were just punks anyway, but at least they had someone to talk to.

He sat on the steps of the front porch and looked around. Even in the big city there wasn't anything to do, and he was so tired of studying the last time his mom had tried to make him, he had thrown the book down the block and refused to go get it. He paused, remembering the look of total disbelief on Chichi's face and his smile faded, but he certainly had felt better at the time!

Goten crept out of the shadows behind him. " W-what'cha doin', Gohan? "

" Nothing. " He admitted quietly. " You better get back inside or mom's gonna kill you. "

" No. " Goten said stiffly, thrusting his nose up in the air like Trunks did sometimes, in imitation of his parents. " Gohan? "

" What? "

" Where is our dad? Trunks laughed at me when I told him dad was out in space training, like you told me. He says he'd know cuz his mom has all the space capsules hidden so we can't play with them. "

" Goten, dad's gone. He… " Gohan knew what he wanted to say, but the words just kept getting stuck behind the lump in his throat. Why was this so hard? But then, why was he the one that had to look into his brother's face and admit that they were just a mistake. That they were just something that shouldn't have happened? " Go get back in bed, it's Saturday! "

" No! And Dad's not gone. " Goten growled. " He'll be back. Mom says that he still loves us Gohan! "

" Yeah, like she'd know how he feels, when he's off living with some stupid girl instead of us! Go get back in the house! This isn't the nice neighborhood that Bulma and Trunks live in, you know! I'm leaving! "

Goten could only watch as his big brother flew out into the early morning haze. Gohan had tried, but he couldn't hide the tears in his eyes. " Dad's living somewhere else? "

Gohan flew blindly until he landed on a rooftop in the downtown area of Satan City. He berated himself for crying again, and wondered how he was ever going to get on with his life if he couldn't stop crying like a baby every time he thought of his dad. It hurt though, he knew it did, and his dad had never gotten mad at him for crying. He growled at himself for caring what his father would've thought, but he knew he couldn't help it. Deep down, he knew he would always care, and that was why it hurt so much, that he could just walk away. That he could just leave and not think about them anymore.

An alarm sounded on the streets below, after the sounds of shattering glass spilling onto the pavement drew his attention, but Gohan didn't move until someone screamed. He reacted instinctively, flying toward the sounds; he could hear voices and the whimpers of someone in pain. Five men were gathered around a car, each of them holding baseball bats and crowbars. They laughed coldly as they dragged the frightened woman from her fancy car, and threw her up against it. The thugs didn't know what hit them until the first four were already unconscious. Gohan turned to face the last one and smiled coldly, noting that the man had a butterfly knife at her throat. The woman seemed unhurt, but the man holding her seemed like trouble, and he looked too calm considering his friends were now all out of the picture.

" Kid, this ain't none of your business, if you leave now, I'll forget about what you did to my boys over there. This lady here is a friend of mine. Ain't ya, sweet thing? " The woman squirmed helplessly in his arms as he pressed the knife into her throat, and nipped her ear.

" N-no!! I've never seen him before! Please… don't go! " The woman whimpered, looking at Gohan with pleading brown eyes.

" Hold it right there! " Snapped a commanding voice. " Nobody move! "

Gohan turned and saw a pretty girl with blue-gray eyes and long black hair in pigtails, glaring at them sternly. Gohan couldn't help it, he laughed. " You're going to get hurt trying to get involved, you better just stay back... "

The thug chose that moment to run, throwing his hostage to the ground. " Damn it! " The girl cried, running after him. " You come back here! "

Gohan walked over to the woman, offering her a hand up. " Are you ok? "

"Y-yes, thank you. " She murmured, drawing her jacket around her shoulders, then she stayed quiet, and finally Gohan was turning to leave, when he heard the footsteps of someone running up behind him.

" Well. " The girl with the pigtails panted, turning Gohan around to glare at him. " Great job. We have the flunkies, but we missed the leader. That guy's been raping and assaulting women in Satan City for months and you let him get away! "

" Me? You were the one that had to open your big mouth! I had him cornered until you distracted me. "

" I didn't think you'd be dumb enough to turn around! "

" Who do you think are you are? You're just some girl in pigtails, what do you know about fighting? "

" I know not to take my eyes off of whoever I'm fighting with! " She shot back.

Gohan looked at her again, noting that she did stand like she knew how to fight, and she had been a pretty fast runner, with that light, agile frame. She wore an oversized tee shirt so long that it almost covered even her biker shorts, but the flimsy material couldn't hide her perfectly shaped breasts, or her lean hips and long legs...

" Finished your inspection yet? " she growled, crossing her arms over her chest. " I happen to know a lot about fighting. My father taught me. Maybe you've heard of him. " She said patronizingly. " His name is Mr. Satan! "

Gohan snorted. " Then maybe, you should ask him about the real reason there aren't any tapes of him beating Cell sometime. "

" What do you mean by that? " She gave him a hard look. " Everybody knows that none of the reporters were able to film anymore because of what Cell did to the… "

" Yeah, " Gohan smiled coldly, he had sort of forgotten that, but still it would've been hard to film Mr. Satan beating Cell when he'd be lucky just to be able to fight his way out of a wet paper bag. He levitated a few feet off of the ground and then glanced back down at her. The girl was staring at him in awe. He rolled his eyes when he figured out it was only because he was flying.

" How are you doing that? " She demanded finally. " People can't fly! Who are you? "

" My name's Gohan. " He shrugged, what could it hurt to tell her his name? " What's yours? "

" I'm Videl. Videl Satan. Hey! Come back here! You still didn't tell me how you are doing that! "

He smirked; there was something about this girl that he liked. He knew he should go home, but really, he didn't want to leave. The way her eyes flashed when she was annoyed or angry was very attractive. Something inside of him liked her aggressive nature and her stubbornness. He could see it in her eyes that she was dying to know how he was flying, and he wondered for a moment if she could learn it, but he stomped that thought down quickly… she was just some silly girl, how interesting could she possibly be?

" Won't your father be worried about you being out so early? " Gohan asked, trying to change the subject. He had to bite his tongue to keep himself from laughing when her eyes lit with fire again.

" I've got permission to help the cops protect this city from trash like that guy you let get away! You don't look any older than me, Gohan whatever your last name is! So I'll bet you have school the day after tomorrow too! But I've never seen you there before; do we need to go talk to the principle? "

" I just moved here. Monday is supposed to be my first day. " Gohan growled, not liking the reminder as to why he had had to come here. And before she could say anything else, he flew up over the top of the building. " Why don't you mind your own damned business? "

**

" Hey, Vegeta… " Goku asked quietly, as the two Saiyans touched down in the desert, with the moon hanging low in the fading darkness of the morning sky.

" What? "

" What happened last night? "

" Gohan came to find you, but attacked the girl instead. I figured something would've happened sooner or later, but I had still hoped that it would not. He goaded you into fighting him. I told him twice to stay away from you and your mate. You need to be alone with her, Bonding is not some stupid human custom we can simply sign a piece of paper and be done with if we decide we've made a mistake. For the rest of your life you will feel her every emotion, know her thoughts and sense when she is hurt or afraid. It takes time to get used to that. It wasn't your fault that you raged, it is part of our nature; something we have to learn to live with. "

" Why did all of this happen now? I don't understand why I feel the way I do. I feel terrible about what I did to Chichi, but can't help it. I think about Jenna and the rest of my life just disappears. I- " Goku hesitated and looked down in shame. " I never even said goodbye to Gohan or Goten… "

" I know. " Vegeta nodded quietly. " Gohan told me. I don't know if there is any way to fix things with him… You don't need me to tell you that he feels betrayed. And you are the only person he would have never suspected. "

" So what do I do now? "

" If Bulma heard you ask me that I think she'd die laughing, Kakarrot. You can't change the past, you made a mistake, but I'm not talking about that night at the party. It would have been more honorable to break the promise to marry Chichi than it would be to do this over again, wouldn't it? "

Goku didn't answer right away, and Vegeta sighed. " If you think you can tell me that if you were going to that party again, knowing all of this would happen, that you could turn down Jenna's advances, forget it. I'm bonded too, remember? Bulma is loud, obnoxious, arrogant and overly opinionated. She can't even cook or clean, since when does that sound like a mate worthy of a prince? But she's also bold, passionate and deeply spirited. I would change nothing between us. This may compromise your honor, but in the end she will be worth it. Your instincts can't deceive you, Kakarrot. She is your destiny. "

" How did you know… I mean, how long have you known about… Jenna and I? "

" I was at the party, only because Bulma wanted me there, you had to have known that. The other fighters keep going to great lengths to make it obvious that they wish I had stayed dead, but I must admit, that feeling is mutual." He chuckled lightly; unfazed by the dark look Goku gave him. " After we ate I happened to notice that idiot Yamcha trying to hit on that little red head of yours. But the only thing she was interested in was you. She'd been watching you all evening actually. Both of you spent most of the party trying not to look bored… especially after our stupid little volleyball game ended. I noticed your mate and Bulma got along quite well, until my intoxicated little mate decided she needed a third strawberry daiquiri and wanted to share it with me. I saw Jenna wander off toward the bar after she figured out Bulma was too drunk and turned on to do more than try to pounce on me. When she got a second drink I didn't need to see where she took it to know it was for you. I just…" He paused, and looked Goku in the eye for a moment, then continued, looking away. " Felt it, somehow. I told Bulma that you were going to mate with that girl, that night. She thought I was kidding. But, as I was getting ready to take Bulma home, I remembered hearing Master Roshi and Krillin trying to figure out where you were… neither of them put it together with Jenna's disappearance. It wasn't until last Saturday that Bulma remembered what I had said that night, but even she didn't believe it until last night. "

" Oh. Ok… Uhm… Vegeta, when I fought Gohan last night… did I hurt him? "

"No. You didn't, Bulma had two Senzu beans, physically he's fine. I cajoled you into fighting me pretty easily. He wasn't unconscious long. It was only your mate I was worried about. Gohan used his power when he attacked her. By all rights she should've been dead before she hit the floor, but Bulma found her and the Senzu healed her. "

" S-so I really attacked him last night? And you really stepped in to save Gohan for me? "

" It's bad enough that you had a family without bonding with your wife. " Vegeta growled defensively. " But to watch you try to kill Gohan was inexcusable. I had to stop you. Bulma would have been heartbroken if you had hurt your son or this planet. Besides, since you spared my life in our first battle, I knew that I owed it to you to protect what you would never willingly endanger. "

" Thank you, Vegeta. " Goku said softly. " I knew I made the right decision at our first meeting when you didn't let me die in the gravity room six years ago. But I never would have guessed that I would owe you this much. "

" It isn't about what's happened in the past anymore… But this still isn't over, Kakarrot. " Vegeta sighed. " Your son will never forget what happened last night. His Saiyan pride will not allow him to forgive your betrayal of your family… or the fact that you nearly killed him while he was trying to avenge it. His Saiyan instincts and pride will be almost totally at odds with everything you and your wife had raised him to believe about revenge, honor and family. For that he might never forgive you… he will always feel the strongest pull toward his human side, because that is how he was raised, but just the fact that he will sometimes find himself listening to his Saiyan half will probably always remind him of last night, and the way he feels about you right now. "

Author Notes… Isn't Vegeta cute when he's trying to be nice but trying not to sound like it?????? Bra's right (in here and in Saiyans Return)… her daddy is a sweet little teddy bear!!!!!
