Black Flowers ; chapter 10, 'Drystan Full of Sorrow'

Rhiamon stirred in the morning light. He sat up, disorientated at his surroundings, as if expecting something else. He let his muscles reluctantly relax, as much as his conditioned instincts told him to be on guard. He reached for his glasses on the bedside table, and lazily swung his legs out of the bed. He moved over to the mirror, taking in his morning appearance. He brushed a hand through his hair sleepily. As early as it was, he found himself studying his reflection. His face, especially since he wore glasses, was so similar to Gohan, his father's. He had a side swept version of Goku's hair, with again, his father's thick strands of hair over his eyes. He could see his mother, Bra, in his eyes. They were the same blue that looked so enchanting on a female, and gave such an interesting effect on him as a male also. He pulled a crisp but rumpled white T-shirt over his head, teamed with his boxer shorts. He opened the door, colliding with Tristian. Tristian looked as he always did in the mornings... half dead. Tristian was very much a child of the night, and thrived on late nights. Tristian hadn't been as decent as Rhiamon, and only wore his black silk boxer shorts, in contrast to Rhiamon's patterned pair. Tristian yawned openly, not covering his mouth. "Dude… where's the bathroom's in this joint?" He complained, trying to focus on the corridor. His vision was completely impaired as a towel landed on his head. He pulled it of in a state of dire confusion and distress.

Rhiamon sniggered at the scene. Poor Tristian was all worked up by the action so early in the morning in his barely alive state. Rhiamon, on the other hand, had caught his towel when Bulma had tossed it at him.

"Guys, you can shower just down here. It's communal, will that be ok?" Bulma asked, pointing to a door.

The guys nodded.

"Yeah, that's ok…" Arienne muttered sleepily, lifting a towel from Bulma on her way by. She followed Rhiamon and Tristian in, joined by Eira too. The door closed, and Bulma stood gawping. When she had gotten over how both sexes had gone communal at once, she frowned with concentration.

1…2…3…4… She stopped her count. There were two youths missing. She frowned even more as she tried to identify who was missing. Ok, three girls. Three boys. Vegeta and Goten's daughter had gone to shower. So had Gohan and Goten's son. So that meant…

The short haired girl was missing… Goku and Bra's daughter! And...um… Cadell! That was it. Trunks and Pan's son. They must have slept in. Bulma left the two other towels by the door for when the missing two showed up.

"Cadell?"

Cadell stirred, his lavender hair moving in fine strands on the slight breeze. Breeze…? He opened his eyes, looking up at the face. Rayne smiled. "Good morning." She greeted him. "You're on the roof. You fell asleep up here last night."

Cadell groaned, lifting his head from her lap. "All night…?" he asked for confirmation.

Rayne smiled, looking at the cityscape around the Corp. "Look for yourself, it's morning." She replied. "I came up here a couple of hours ago. You were dreaming.. and I didn't have the heart to wake you."

Cadell looked at her short feathered turquoise hair. "I was dreaming?" He asked. He frowned. "You should have woken me."

Rayne shook her head gently. Her voice soft, like if she was talking to a child. "You have to dream. Face the past, or the future is unreachable." She advised him.

Cadell merely 'hmphed' in response. He had perhaps inherited his grandfather's demeanor rather than his father, Trunks. Rayne kept smiling. Her own father's temperament allowed her to feel peaceful even around grouchy souls. Goku was always very forgiving around Vegeta, after all.

"Are you hungry? We should catch some breakfast." Rayne suggested. She didn't receive an answer, but took that as a yes. After all, they were Saiyans. Rayne stood up, stretching her arms out. Bright eyed, she headed or the roof edge, peering over. "It'll be far faster his way." She said, before gently jumping off. Cadell paused, briefly and calculatingly taking in the city around him, before following.

"So this is the city really." Bra explained. "There's not a lot to do, but it's great for designer shopping."

The Z gang plus the new six Saiyan youths stopped to rest. Bra had taken the tour, and they had ended up in some of the trendiest parts of the city. They had rested in a small town square, a water fountain surrounded by many designer shops and boutiques. The stone edge of the fountain was warm to sit on in the mid day sun, and the area was relaxing.

This was all on purpose of course. Bra wanted her shopping fix of the day, and seemed surprised her daughter's didn't share the same thrill of retail therapy. Rayne and Eira however, remained acceptably enthused to please their parent. Arienne was far too much like her mother, Pan, and her father, Vegeta. She lived to fight it seemed, eager to take one of the Z gang on for a spar.

Three girls walked by the gang, obviously mall rats, considering the part of the city they were in. They looked the men up and down with a smile. Tristian and Rhiamon hesitated and watched them as they walked past.

"Woah…" Tristian said, his eyes following the departing females. .

Arienne, Rayne and Eira sighed.

Rhiamon gave Cadell a nudge. "You coming?" he asked.

Cadell looked up as if he had only just woken up. "What? Where?" he asked. He had been quietly and obediently stood with the group, not looking like he was at leisure in the slightest.

Tristian gestured to direction of the girls. "To get some babes." He prompted with enthusiasm.

"I'll pass." Cadell declined, turning away.

"Your loss…" Tristian huffed before jogging to catch up with the girls.

"Typical!" Arienne said, but with a tinge of humor in her voice.

"They're still young." Bulma spoke up. "Let them enjoy themselves."

The gang watched from the distance as Rhiamon and Tristian flirted with the girls. Tristian and his pick of the bunch slowly wandered back up to the fountain. The girl was a pretty brunette, dressed in a small blue sundress. She was looking attentively at Tristian as they talked.

"You're a soldier! That's sooo cool!" The girl cooed, her eyes almost sparkling.

Tristian grinned valiantly. "Special squadron too…" he slurred. "Would you like me to tell you more about it?"

"Yes please!" the girl agreed. "You're so smart and funny!"

Tristian invited the girl to take his arm, and she held onto him, gushing. Tristian led her away, winking at the other guys.

Rhiamon slowly filtered back to the group, unaccompanied. Eira took his arm, an affectionate gesture to her older brother. But in her eyes as she looked around was uncertainty, no matter how well hidden in the ditzy exterior. "I'd like an ice cream." She announced suddenly. She let go of her brother, and attached herself to Goten to his surprise. "Would you get me one?" She asked, her blue eyes widening at her father. "Please…?"

"Erm...sure…" Goten stuttered, never having been good at refusing women anyway. He saw the happy grin cross his daughters' face.

Trunks was watching his son intently. Cadell looked on edge, even though he was in such a serene environment. He seemed alert, every sound and movement catching his attention. He watched as a bunch of young kid's playing with water guns ran by his legs, and the young man almost jumped with surprise, looking suspiciously at the commotion.

"Cadell, do you want an ice cream?" Eira piped up suddenly. The young man looked at his cousin with surprise at first, digesting her question.

"Sure." He answered simply. He seemed to return to his curious almost guard duty immediately.

Gohan had been watching too. In Cadell, he could see the signs of just what was to come. The other youths were far more relaxed, but Gohan suspected only on the surface.

"When are they coming?" Gohan asked. The Z gang and youths looked up at him. What he had said was vague, but everyone understood him.

"August 14th… 2:13pm, on the outskirts of the Corp." Rhiamon answered mechanically.

"That's only three months away." Bulma calculated. "Three months and two days."

Bra looked down at the ground. "I'm…I'm scared." She confessed softly. Just barely audible. Trunks beside her hugged her comfortingly.

"We're not going to let anyone be taken." He vowed. "Now we know, we can prepare."

"It won't be simple." Rhiamon said realistically. "It doesn't matter how much you prepare."

"Besides, they'll track us down to this time sooner or later." Cadell added. "Who knows when we will be discovered. It's a risk we'll have to take."

"So all we can do is wait?" Krillen whined. "How can we? Knowing they're on their way any time now!"

"Quiet baldy!" Vegeta snapped. "There is no reason for someone without Saiyan blood to get all excitable!"

"Saiyan blood is irrelevant! This is a fight, there are no rules, no limitations." Arienne yelled over the argument. Her black eyes were burning with fire, her face determined and angry. "There is no favour in this. What matters is strength and skill. The weaker will be defeated, leaving the stronger to survive. That is the way." She huffed. She folder her arms across her chest, her stance proud and warrior-like.

Vegeta silently scrutinized his daughter's words. Eventually, he gave a dismissive snort, that was close to approval. Goten came back with all the ice-creams, passing them around to the grateful gang.

"Gee… I guess you were never into dolls, right?" Yamcha stuttered at Arienne. She glared at him, but her face softened, as she hid no malice beneath her fiery temperament. Her face was now calm, and almost wistful as she stared at Vegeta.

Vegeta felt the eyes on him, and looked her questioningly with irritation. "What is it, brat? Why are you staring at me like that?" He huffed, annoyed.

Arienne stepped tentatively towards Vegeta. "I saw you once." She said. She lifted her hand, as if to touch his face, but hesitated.

Vegeta's face turned to silent surprise instead of annoyance.

Arienne furrowed her eyebrows with thought. "You were being dragged along a corridor. You were struggling, but you stopped. You looked right at me… As if you knew me, knew who I was…" She laughed softly at this. "But of course you didn't."

Vegeta gazed at her softly as she spoke. "Did you know me?" He asked.

"Yes, I knew you. I had heard stories of this man who was my father. But that was the first time I remembered seeing you face to face." Arienne replied. She continued sadly. "…And the last. You were never seen after that day. A threat, I heard murmured by the lieutenants."

Vegeta smirked proudly. "They were cowards and weaklings." He said.

"I wish you had been there, in my life. All those times I needed you." Arienne said. "Like when my son was born."

Vegeta's eyes widened, as did the others. Gohan nearly dropped his ice-cream with surprise.

"Son?" Trunks spluttered.

"He was taken from me, when he was born." Arienne revealed with difficulty. "I haven't seen him since."

"Who was the father?" Vegeta asked seriously.

"He was a soldier, a human." She said painfully. "His name was Drystan." Her face hardened as she continued. "He was executed. For defiance."

Vegeta looked away with sympathy. "I'm sorry." He huffed. "Did you care for him?"

"I did." Arienne said, keeping her face straight. "It doesn't matter anymore now."

"I'm sorry for your loss." Gohan expressed. His heart sank a bit in his chest. He wondered to what extent Arienne had been in love. In the lives they must have lead, to find love amongst all the pain must have been a dream.

Arienne showed no more emotion than a sad wistfulness. Trained to treat these situations with a soldier's control.

"What was your son's name?" Bra asked.

Arienne's face brightened the faintest bit. But that was just enough… for now at least. "His name is Drystan, after his father." She smiled. "I sound so stupid... I'm talking about him in the present tense. But... I can't hope. Not yet. There's too much at stake to worry about his safety. He may be already dead." Her face was cold by this point, just held together.

Pan opened her mouth to say something comforting, but waited for the other youths to say it for her. She was shocked when no one did. Did they have so little hope in the boy's safety?? Rhiamon hugged his niece though, and Arienne silently accepted this comfort.

"Should we get back?" Videl suggested disheartened by the day's events.

"Maybe that's a good idea." 18 agreed.

Eira finished her ice-cream cone, her eyes still as innocent and blue as they had been all day. And soon, the youths were just the same… happy.

Gohan walked along the Capsule Corp lounge upper floor hall with Goten, Rhiamon, Cadell and Arienne. One of these doors was the showers, he knew it. They had taken a long walk back through the hot and dusty city, and felt in need of a cool shower. Although, Arienne had agreed to wait and go in separately this time, because of Gohan being present this time. Rhiamon pushed open the door that he was sure was it.

He walked into the room, but stopped dead by what he saw. Tristian looked up at him with a weak smile. He was laid back in bed, naked but with the covers up to his waist. Curled up next to him was the ditzy girl from before. A light blush dusted her cheeks and she gave a little wave.

"Tristian!" Arienne snapped, looking over Rhiamon's shoulder. She made a noise of disgust and walked away.

Tristian and the girl looked at her, and then at each other with confusion.

Gohan closed the door with extreme embarrassment, blocking off Cadell and Rhiamon who were giving Tristian a thumbs up. That was a sight he didn't want to see. He thought they had only just met earlier that afternoon…? Still blushing and in shock, he cast his eyes down the rest of the doors down the hall, mentally assessing his chances of another wrong door. Affected by what he had seen, he headed back for the stairs. "I think... I think I'll shower at home..." He stuttered to the other youths. He soon disappeared.
