Chapter 2 - The Surprise

A/N: I am dedicating this chapter to Keisi, who had been an inspiring and encouraging friend who made me want to continue writing! Thank you for being there, as long as you read, I will keep writing something for you to sink your eyes into! Enjoy!

A faint voice could be heard, but Vegeta couldn't place where it was coming from as he was deep asleep.

“Father, wake up! Father!” said the voice.

The Saiyan prince groaned and popped his eyes open to see his son. Vegeta sat up and raised an eyebrow inquisitively as to what could be desired of his son's visiting.

“Father, I wanted to ask you, are you sure you want to stay in this part of the building alone?”

“Trunks, I'll be fine. You don't have to worry about me. If it bothers you then all you have to do is come over here and see me.”

Trunk reluctantly decided to let his dad be, though he did fear for his well-being. Vegeta was now very awake. It made him very mad, because he had begged in his head that by some miracle he would not wake up, and fall into a slumber eternally. The Saiyan prince got up and proceeded to the kitchen. His throat was burning from a lack of hydration, so he sought out a drink. Nothing looked good to him anymore. The Saiyan let out a deep sigh. Vegeta looked in the cabinet and saw a bottle of wine. He drank to whole bottle in no time, then went back to the couch and lit up a cigarette.

Sometimes Vegeta missed his home planet more than words could describe. In fact, the thought crossed the prince's mind that maybe it was a bad idea for him to have come here in the first place, and he shouldn't have stayed on Earth. Everything he had ever cared about seemed to slip away from him, and just when he had made a life for himself and had become happy, he lost the only thing that had mattered to him all of these years on Earth. Though, the prince could not deny that he had become quite fond of his children. The idea of being a father was very unsettling to Vegeta at first, but he grew quite attached to Trunks once he was born, and was happy to add his daughter later. His years really had been spent well in terms of happiness. If the Saiyan prince had gone back to space, he wouldn't have known the joys in life like this. Vegeta was really just depressing himself now. The prince decided to put his thoughts to rest and distract himself by cleaning up and going to see what his daughter was up to.

The Saiyan prince walked into the wing of the building where his daughter resided and found her. It made him choke at first because she had always been almost exactly the same looking as Bulma. Sure, before he had thought it was a cute attribute, but now that Bulma was gone it just upset him to see her in their daughter. She was the closest he'd come to seeing his mate again. As he moved close to her, the prince hugged Bra from behind.

“Hey, daddy…What are you doing?” asked Vegeta's daughter.

“Nothing…just visiting you…” said the prince quietly.

“Come with me…”

The prince raised a brow. “Where are you going?”

“To visit the Sons…it'll be fun!” Bra persuaded her father pushily.

“Do I have a choice? Are you making me go?” The prince really didn't want to go see that idiot Kakarot.

“Yes. You will feel better if you do something to get your mind off of things…”

As Vegeta had always had trouble saying no to his daughter, he found himself at the Son house with her as she knocked on the door. Goten greeted them, hugging Bra when he saw her. The prince glared at him, and the half-Saiyan jumped anxiously.

“Oh, Bra…you brought Vegeta….That uh…uhh...” Bra's dad gave him a suspicious look as he struggled for words, “...that's nice…” he finally finished.

Vegeta huffed and let them go inside ahead of him, while he remained outside to smoke a cigarette. Just when he was getting relaxed, someone decided to bother him.

“I thought I told you to quit that…” said the voice of Vegeta's former rival, plucking the cigarette from Vegeta's mouth.

“You know, I don't know if you've heard the news flash, but you are not the person who gives me orders…I should be ordering you. You try going through this and see how you feel.” The prince plucked the cigarette back and put it in his mouth.

“I guess you are the one that missed the news flash then…Because I have gone through this too, Vegeta…My wife died a few years ago, but I didn't let that take over my life and bring me down. I still have two sons, and my granddaughter. Just like you have a daughter and a son…”

The older Saiyan had indeed forgotten that Kakarot's mate had passed on. He remembered Bulma mentioning that now… Blast him…Vegeta refused to admit his logic was really very reasonable. Stupid Kakarot…didn't even act like he had suffered from his loss any.

“You…you're never sad, never angry…always just calm and happy and peaceful…I don't get you at all! You really don't understand, do you?! After you left for those seven years, Bulma was the only thing keeping me going... She was the reason I stayed here on Earth. I wasted my life here, protected these people, and how does life repay me?! By taking away that which changed my life…No, you will never get what I'm going through, you damn fool.” The prince was obviously fuming now.

Something inside Goku snapped. He decided that if Vegeta really didn't want his help, he should just leave it at that. He was tired to giving comfort to the prince with no thanks, and not even a sign of kindness in return. Even though Vegeta had always been sour, it just seemed too harsh, even for him.

“You know what? Fine. Vegeta, you win. I'm just stupid, and I'll never get anything. Even if someone were to sit down and have a talk with me, I would be too stupid to understand. I can't understand the mighty Saiyan prince no matter how hard I try. I'm just dumb old Kakarot, right? I'm done with this….” With that, Goku walked away, leaving Vegeta with only the last thoughts of the sarcastic speech the younger Saiyan had just finished.

The prince was a little dumbfounded. Was Goku really giving up on him? If so, good riddance, thought Vegeta.

The Saiyan prince was wondering around one day and found himself out about in West City. He entered a building called a bar out of curiosity. There was a small stage that looked like it was for performing in the right side of the building, but no one was on it. The middle part was filled with round tables and some chairs, and the left sector of the building was the main part of the bar, with a big counter enclosing a man and round stools in front of the counter. Vegeta took his chances and went to the bar counter, sitting at an empty stool. He looked around. There really weren't many people around. The man behind the counter came up to Vegeta and looked at him. The prince raised an eyebrow at him.

“What can I get for ya?” Said the man.

The prince was a bit confused at first, and then he looked up and saw a menu with a wide variety of drinks, many of which sounded like alcoholic ones. So a bar was a place to get alcohol? That was interesting.

“Hmm…I'm open to suggestions…” asked the prince to the bartender.

“Well, I'm a big fan of screwdrivers, or just plain vodka.” He responded.

“Fine, give me one of these screwdrivers.”

The bartender went and made a drink, which looked like orange juice, but he had put vodka in it, too. He sat the drink in front of the Saiyan prince, who then drank it down quickly. Vegeta liked what he tasted. Enough to order a couple more even, and couple other drinks after that. Soon enough he was pretty out of it and quite drunken. The bartender finally cut him off and advised him to walk slowly on the way home as not to trip and fall. The prince could be seen at this bar from then on late in the night, getting pretty drunk most nights.

The ringing of the phone startled Goku from his afternoon nap and he fell off of the couch. The earthly Saiyan only had a second to ogle over the pain before he had to hurry to reach the phone.

“Hello?” answered Goku, still sounding like he was half asleep.

“Goku? This is Trunks.”

“Hey, Trunks, how are things there lately?”

“Well…Not too great…I was wondering if you could help with something. My father has been going somewhere late at night, and sleeping all day. Something's not right…could you maybe…” Trunks paused, hoping he'd gotten his point through to Goku already.

“Talk to him?” finished Goku.

“Well, yes…and no…not just talk to him, but try to find out exactly what he has been doing, so maybe we can all help him out if he is in trouble…”

Goku was hesitant to say he would do what Trunks was asking of him when he remembered the spat that he'd had with Vegeta. A month had passed and the younger Saiyan had not gone to visit the Saiyan prince once. He really didn't want anything to do with him anymore, because everything he did to try and help just seemed futile. Trunks' words made the pure-hearted Saiyan regret having pushed himself away from Vegeta like that.

“Don't you worry Trunks, I'll be sure to get to the bottom of this,” he said to the son of Vegeta and then proceeded to hang up the phone.

Vegeta walked out of his door, dressed in his favorite color as of recent, black. The Saiyan prince took off into the air. He landed in the heart of West City and headed for the bar that he'd come to be a regular in. By the time Goku had tracked him down and found the prince's location, he'd already had a few drinks. The younger Saiyan watched him from just inside the door as he sat at the counter and ordered a screwdriver from the barkeep. Is this what he had been doing all this time? Going to a bar and getting drunk everyday? That just didn't seem like something he would do. Vegeta was now sitting there smoking his cigarette slowly, seeming to be savoring it greatly.

The bartender spoke, “Hey, V, don't look now, it's your girlfriend…”

The prince frowned at the bartender, because he knew exactly what the man spoke of. A blonde woman walked up behind him and touched him lightly on the shoulder.

“Hey sexy, why don't you come and sit with me?” said the woman seductively.

“Hey, why can't you take a hint and bug off. I'm not interested in your cheap talk…” Vegeta spoke in his coldest voice, hoping to get the woman pestering him to walk away, but she seemed to persist.

“Why so bitter? Are you married, is that the problem? Because I don't mind, I won't tell if you won't tell..”

“Well…” said Vegeta as if he was considering her offer, “You know, I don't give a shit what you say, nothing can convince me to change my mind. I know a selfish, no good woman when I see one. So, kindly leave me alone!”

The woman, obviously giving up, stormed off, quite offended by the brutal insults of the Saiyan prince.

“Hey V, I don't mean to pry, and I don't blame you for shoving off a woman like that, but what really is your deal? Do you have a family at home?” asked the bartender.

“Well, the kids are grown and take care of them selves, and my wife passed away recently,” replied the Saiyan to the human with a little bit of reluctance.

“Oh…I'm sorry to hear about your loss…If I was you, I still wouldn't have given that woman a chance had the circumstances been different…She's no good.”

Vegeta nodded, agreeing with the man.

“How about another screwdriver?”

“Go ahead..” said Vegeta in response.

The man had the screwdriver whipped up in no time, and Vegeta gulped it down in no time. The younger Saiyan had been watching from just inside the door where Vegeta couldn't see. Goku feared for Vegeta's well-being when he saw what the prince had been doing. Well, he had to try to help him, so he walked right up to him at that moment and sat down beside him.

“Hi, Vegeta…” said Goku a bit timidly.

The Saiyan prince jumped in surprise at the sound of the younger Saiyan's voice. He looked over to see his former rival had snuck up on him somehow.

“Well, it's Kakarot! I thought I'd gotten rid of you by how you acted before, and here you are, like a stalker out of the dark…” Vegeta spoke with heavy sarcasm in his voice, and his words were beginning to slur from too much to drink. Goku responded by laughing nervously, and the prince spoke again, “Get us two margaritas over here!” He then turned his attention back to the other Saiyan. “So…What brings you here after no sign of you for a month?”

“Well, I just wanted to make sure you were doing okay, Vegeta…”

The prince laughed at Goku's comment.

“Since when do you care if I'm okay or not? We both know that we've never been great friends or anything. So…there must be another motive for why you're here that you aren't telling me…” Vegeta searched the other Saiyan's expressions while waiting for an answer.

The barkeep sat the two margaritas in front of the two Saiyans, and Vegeta took his and gulped it down.

“Well…Trunks told me that he is worried about you, Vegeta. He's the one who asked me to see what you've been doing. Is this what you always do?”

Vegeta looked away from the other Saiyan. Sooner or later he figured this would happen, but he thought it would be later on than this.

“Are you going to drink that?” said Vegeta, asking about the other margarita.

“Uh…no…”

The prince took the drink and it was gone in one gulp. The prince then laid some money on the counter and headed towards the door. Goku followed him outside.

“Vegeta! Please let me help you…”

The prince spoke, his back turned to the other Saiyan. “You were so quick to give up before, so what makes you think I would care to let you help now? You'll just leave again when you get tired of me…”

Goku was suddenly hit very hard with the pain of guilt. He shouldn't have left Vegeta alone to begin with, because he'd gotten worse.

“So, you would rather have had me keep annoying you then? And here I thought you hated me…”

“But…you were…” The prince didn't want to complete the sentence he'd started out of the fear of exposing himself too much.

“What, Vegeta? You can tell me…” Goku took a step towards the Saiyan prince.

“I know I didn't act like it…but you were comforting to have around. You are the only thing I have left to remind me of home…”

Goku looked puzzled at Vegeta's last words.

“Home? What do you mean?” asked the curious younger Saiyan.

“The place we were born…You are all I have left of it.”

Goku was beginning to understand. Vegeta didn't want to admit he felt at peace with the other Saiyan around, so he was bitter towards him like his usual self instead. But, when he went too far and Goku stopped coming around, the prince became very unstable and started drinking to take out his frustrations. Vegeta hadn't looked at Goku since they had gone outside, so the younger Saiyan walked up to him and turned him around. The prince's eyes were watery, though he seemed like he was trying to hold back the tears welling up in his eyes.

“Vegeta…I'm sorry I left you…” whispered Goku as he wrapped his arms around the other Saiyan, bringing him into a tight embrace. The prince surprisingly welcomed the closeness of his old rival, wanting this loneliness he had been feeling to just disappear into Kakarot's arms. Vegeta returned the embrace. The prince could feel the hot tears on his cheeks now, rolling down his face despite his objections.

“Vegeta, let's take you home, okay?”

The older Saiyan nodded, and in an instant they were back in the prince's room thanks to Goku's handy trick. The younger Saiyan led Vegeta to his bed and laid him down. The prince was out quickly from the alcohol in his system. Goku sat beside Vegeta, watching him for a moment. When he went to get up, the prince grabbed the arm of the other Saiyan. He was still half asleep, and obviously drunk.

“Don't…don't leave me alone again…” whispered the older Saiyan.

“Vegeta…” said Goku with a hint of curiosity.

“Please stay, Kakarot?” muttered the half-asleep Saiyan, repeating his plea in different words.

Goku gave in and laid beside Vegeta, and soon drifted off to sleep himself.
