Chapter One: Hyokohyoko are trembling steps

* * Thirteen year earlier * *

Even from a distance, the girl, known as Ree, was different from most eleven year olds. Her five feet tall structure was covered with muscles, the skin of her legs was adorned in battle scars, and her furry tail was draped around her waist protectively. Ree trailed behind a man of a similar look whose bushy hair trailed on the floor behind him. It was a favorite game of Ree to see how many times she could step on that long mane before Raditz would turn around and batter her. The record was currently six yanks.

The two saiyans walked down the stone corridor ignoring most of the insults that were directed at them, until a pair of warriors approached them and put a halting hand on Raditz's shoulder.

"Look who it is, Fibbli," said a rotund orange man to another large being dressed in armor, "it's our saiyan friends."

Raditz turned and spit at the men's feet, "Good Evening Fibbli and Junco, have you come to cause trouble or just get the crap beat out of you?"

"Actually, we want a word with the girl there," said Junco, giving Ree a spiteful smirk and nod.

"Talk all you want, she's not my concern," replied Raditz before abandoning Ree to deal with the two demonic men single-handedly.

"Don't touch me," growled Ree, beginning to back away.

Junco grabbed Ree by her tail and lifted her from the ground, "Where are you going, sweetie, we wanna talk."

"Yeah," said Fibbli, "rumor has it that you and that partner (1) of yours were talking down about us."

"It was Raditz doing all the talking," Ree said with a terrible cruelty in her voice that was unusual for an eleven year old, "why don't you go and bug him?"

"Are you going to make us?" growled Fibbli.

Ree tried to respond, but she already couldn't breathe from the tail-generated pain that was spreading over her in waves, each wave more excruciating then the last. Ree, in an attempt to escape, thrashed about, using up her valuable energy. Until, finally, Junco released the tail and hurled her into the gray, rock-solid wall. The people countless stories above could hear the collision that shattered both the concrete wall and Ree's delicate bones.

"Ki… ki," Ree struggled to speak, "kisama (2)!"

"The little wench is insulting us, eh?" Fibbli picked up a slab of the broken wall and rammed it into Ree's face, bringing forth dangerous amounts of balmy blood. Through all this torture, she remained soundless because it would do her no good to cry out. No one would help her, even if she did scream. Ree simply had to deal with her own battles as they arose, and deal she did, until the two tormenters were through. The silent child lay on the floor, barely recognizable as a living creature, soaking in her own blood, and almost unconscious from the agony. But that is not how a saiyan lets a battle end. As Junco and Fibbli turned and sauntered away, Ree reached deep within herself, to a place that only saiyans seem to possess, and found strength enough to pull herself to her feet. Ree gathered all the life left within her, and released a power-blast that transformed the pair into powder.

"You lose," she collapsed onto the floor, and then all went black.

Ree, after a week in the recovery tanks, went directly to her master, Freeza, and requested an assignment. Freeza allotted her and Raditz the task of destroying all life on the thriving and nonviolent planet of Wan, but there was a problem… she couldn't find Raditz. Following hours of looking for her absent partner, Ree gave up her search and started toward a canteen to order some lunch.

She took a seat and the waitress asked with a heavy twang, "What'll it be lil' one?"

"Uh, how about some ramen, and egg-rolls. Oh yeah, and oden, and I'll try the curry too, and…"

"Whoa now, Ree, you'll never eat all that!" giggled the waitress.

"How do you know me?"

"What's that supposed to mean?"

"You know my name."
"Well, I should know yur' name, after all that happened to me cause `a of yall." The waitress's response just baffled the young saiyan more. They had never met prior to this. "Maybe I should introduce myself before I go any further there hun'. My name's Jurri, I was Junco's wife."

Ree's hands flew to her gaping mouth, and she stood up so rapidly that the chair beneath her plummeted onto the floor. Even in the savage world of Freiza's empire, slaughtering someone's husband was not something to be taken lightly. "I'm… I'm so sorry," Ree began to sob, "you… you're free to kill me, if you want."

"Why would I wanna do that?" Jurri bent down and put two hands on Ree's shoulders, "I know yur' too young to understand this yet, but I'm gonna tell ya anyhow. Junco's death wasn't yur' fault. He attacked ya like cat after a mouse, and ya just reacted the only way ya were taught. If anyone's to blame it's that Raditz fella' for leaving yall alone, and heading off to that desolate planet."

"Desolate planet? You know where he is!" Ree's eyes lit up like fireflies at midnight.

"Bet yur tail I do, he's off to Earth to find his long lost brother," Jurri smirked, "seems you've been replaced."

"Why would he want a new partner? All he did was ignore his old one." Ree picked her chair back up and, crossing her arms in a childish pout, slumped down.

"Don't be acrimonious, youngin'. You should help yur partner, not abandon him."

Ree smashed her fists onto the table, "he abandoned me! Why shouldn't I be arc… acrimony… acrid…"

"Acrimonious?"

"Yeah! I should be that!"

"So should I. Yall killed my man, and yet I'm not bitter or spiteful because I know anger only leads to revenge, and revenge only leads to more anger. Don't ya see? Be the better person, Ree, and help Raditz find his brother," Jurri stood up, "I'll go get yur chow, hun."

Jurri walked off, leaving Ree to her thoughts, with an immense decision to make. If she didn't complete the mission that Freeza assigned her, there would be hell to pay. But inside, Ree knew she should follow Raditz, regardless of how he treated her.

"What do I do now?" pondered Ree, as a profound feeling of déjà vu came upon her, "I feel like I've been here before, trying to make this same decision. In the past I… I feel like I made the wrong decision last time…" Jurri couldn't help but beam with pride as Ree got to her feet and reluctantly walked out the exit. It didn't matter if she had to walk the whole distance with trembling steps; Ree was going to Earth.

Footnotes:

(1) Ree and Raditz, similar to Vegeta and Nappa, take partnered assignments from Freeza. But even though they fight side by side, they hate each other.

(2) "Kisama" is Japanese for bastard.

Author's notes:

I love it! I'm so proud of myself! One of my favorite things to do in my fan-fictions is to base the characters on real people. The character Jurri is one of my favorite country singers, Reba McEntire.
