Vegeta looked at the back of Bulma's head as she worked.

He would miss her.

It had been a tense week for both Vegeta and Goku. Each man had told his family of his intention to leave. At first, no one took it well. Goku could still feel the dent in his head from where Chi Chi hurled a cast-iron frying pan at him. Vegeta had been called every dirty name in the book.

All the children acted as if they had been betrayed.

It got so out of control that Goku insisted that both families have a meeting to talk it over. Vegeta and Goku explained to them all how much they needed this. Even though the tension in the room was thick, it seemed to get through to some family members, like Gohan and Trunks.

As the week progressed everyone came to accept it, seeing that both Saiyans really did not take this decision lightly. And Bulma actually insisted on preparing their space capsule, Trunks and Gohan offering their help.

Bulma was putting the final touches on her latest invention. She sighed, finally done.

She turned her tight face to Vegeta. Although she'd come to accept and even understood his decision, it was still difficult for her, losing her husband as she was about to.

“Well, let's give it a whirl.” She gave him a small, sad smile.

She turned on the radar. Four blips lit on its screen.

“It works!” Vegeta said in fascination. He looked at his wife with respect and admiration. She looked pleased.

“Of course it works. I used the same principal as I did when I created the dragon radar.”

The radar showed a zoomed in reading of the area around and including the space capsule, the radar picking up Vegeta, Trunks, Gohan, and Goku.

This new radar would pick up Saiyan ki. Goku and Vegeta would each have a portable model and then there was a larger one on the control panel of the ship.

“Well, I guess that does it then.” Bulma fought back tears, her voice thickening. Vegeta put a hand on her shoulder.

“Thank you, Bulma.” He said nothing further. There was nothing else to say.

With one final wave, standing at the ship's window, the two Saiyans bid “goodbye” proudly to their families, who watched their departure from the lawn of Capsule Corp. As Goku and Vegeta's ship took off, distance between the ground and themselves ever increasing, their loved ones slowly began to resemble tiny dots.

“Well! We're actually doing it! This is great. How long do you think it'll be before we are out of Earth's atmosphere?” Goku turned innocent features to Vegeta.

Vegeta scoffed, “You've no memory retention. Like the time you made this trip before, not long at all, idiot.”

Goku looked annoyed in response. “Vegeta, can we get something out of the way? This is going to be a long trip with many days of just the two of us here together. Can we at least cut the insults?” He looked at Vegeta hopefully.

Vegeta smirked. “Ok, just don't be such an idiot.” Goku rolled his eyes at Vegeta in exasperation.

Vegeta got up and willed himself not to pace, knowing that this was it, until they found a planet they wanted to explore. He stood looking at the view of earth as it grew smaller and smaller. “Look, so long as we are getting things straight, how about that appetite of yours. We SHOULD have enough food for an entire year. The rest we have to get on our own and who knows how long it will be before we find edible food on another planet. We don't need you eating all of our supplies after just a couple of hours training in gravity.”

Goku blinked innocently, “What do you take me for?! Hey, speaking of which, I'm kind of hungry. You want something to eat?”

Vegeta gave him a withering stare.

Goku shrugged as he left the control room to get a snack.

Goku marveled at the intensity of his “room mate,” as Vegeta jabbed the air, having trained now for over six hours straight.

Goku was in the midst of his thousandth push up and decided to lower himself, leaning on an elbow, so that he could watch some of Vegeta's training.

The pair had seemed to settle into a quiet camaraderie. It had been a couple of days now and they didn't seem to be getting in each other's way. That had really concerned Goku at first, knowing how easily he seemed to ire Vegeta. But Vegeta seemed happy. Sure, there wasn't much to do as they traveled but train. But they were on their way to doing something, an adventure, which was more satisfying than sitting around the house.

Goku, getting up, was about to pick up the large can of tomato soup that he had been using as a prop for the small of his back while he did his sit ups, but stopped. He was distracted by a little blipping noise. He neared the Saiyan radar, leaving the can of soup to roll around on the floor.

Vegeta was breathing so heavy from his training that he had not heard the beep from the radar. But he noticed Goku's face as he neared the radar and stopping immediately, rushing over to where Goku stood.

“What did you see?!”

Goku continued to stare at the radar, and then at the view screen, not seeing a planet nearby. He looked again at the radar. “I thought I saw a brief blip.”

Vegeta moved Goku out of the way, almost rudely, his sweaty torso staining Goku's gi. Goku didn't seem to notice, too curious himself, wanting to see if the blip would show up again.

The large can of tomato soup rolled and hit Goku's foot, Goku absently kicking it away as he looked over Vegeta's shoulder. At the same moment, a brief blip appeared again on the screen, both Saiyan's eagerly trying to identify the coordinates, both looking at the radar screen and up at the view to try to determine the direction of the reading. In the midst of this frantic calculation, the kicked can of soup, with the force of Goku's strength behind it, bounced and hit the acceleration pedal of Goku's command post. The ship zoomed forward, sending both Saiyans crashing to and sliding across the floor on their backs. The ship's sudden movement sent the can of soup in the opposite direction, heading towards Vegeta's command post where it lodged itself under the breaking pedal. The can had lodged with such force that it moved the pedal up, causing the ship to slam to a sudden stop even though the pedal was moved in the opposite direction it needed to go. Both Goku and Vegeta sailed forward with the force of the sudden stop, their head's crashing just under the control panel.

Goku's head managed to break through the cabinet, exposing numerous cables and wires. Goku was still stuck in the hole as Vegeta crawled his way back up to look at the control panel. He saw the can of soup and tried to move it out of the way with his foot, but the damn thing was wedged good. His foot movements had jerked the pedal further causing the ship to destabilize and move suddenly, making him lose balance. As he lost balance, one of his hands slapped down to the panel, and to his dismay, he saw that he hit the hyper drive control.

Vegeta's mind working in a panic made a mental note to get a good look at these pedals for proper alignment -- if he and Goku didn't end up dead

With a sickening sensation, the ship zoomed through space. Holding himself in place, Vegeta managed to set the coordinates to land on the nearest planet, but to his dismay, it looked as if they would have to make a crash landing, his ability to slow the ship down impaired by the can still wedged under the breaking pedal. He managed to kick the can away, but then the breaking pedal fell loosely, uselessly to the floor, broken. Realizing the ship was going to crash land at this point, no matter what he did, and Goku just having managed to crawl his way up to a standing position next to him, Vegeta, angered and scared, looked at Goku and roared with rage.

“YOU BAKA!!!” He grabbed Goku by the neck and part strangling him, part slamming the back of his head against the Saiyan Radar screen, Vegeta punctuated each pounding of Goku's head with a new insult, “YOU IDIOT!” “CLOWN!!” “IDIOT LOWER CLASS..”

Then they both heard it. Vegeta, still holding Goku by the neck, dragged him out of the way so that he could look at the radar screen. Goku, clutching at his neck, stood next to Vegeta.

They saw a cluster of strong blips on the radar screen. And then they looked up at the view of the planet they were about to crash into.

To be continued…
