Chapter 8 - Planet Vegeta

Goku and Vegeta stepped out of the ship and closed it up. They chose to land in a secluded spot of the planet so as to avoid unwanted attention. On landing, Vegeta reminded Goku that they still had to overhaul the air re-circulation system. They planned to have a brief look around the planet and see how things went. Based on what they found they would decide to either return immediately to the ship or explore the planet for a few days before returning to the task.

Goku followed Vegeta as he headed towards the city on the horizon. With the day just beginning to show signs of fading to dusk, the city ahead loomed large and glittering, catching the sunlight in steel and millions of windows. The city looked spectacular and Goku marveled at it austere beauty. Vegeta, however, wore a tight look on his face that Goku couldn't read.

The two Saiyans made it to the city in no time at all and flew high overhead to avoid notice for as long as possible. They wanted to see what they were facing first, not the other way around.

Looking down at a deserted city street in puzzlement, Vegeta turned to Goku. “Look, none of this is familiar to me. We've got strong readings of Saiyan's all around, but mostly in that direction.” Vegeta indicated north of the city. “But, well, I guess I would have to be too hopeful to expect it to be the same planet. They've gone through their own period of evolution even though we both started off the same. Still, this is very different from the Vegeta I remember.”

Goku blinked at him, and not liking the look of concern on Vegeta's face, tried to comfort his friend and most recent lover. “Look Vegeta, this is an exploration. Whatever we find, we find. Sure it may be different from what you remember, but,” Goku indicated his radar with his thumb, “this doesn't seem to be lying. And even though it is quiet out, I don't get the same vibe I did at the deserted space station. I think it will be all right.” Goku smiled reassuringly at Vegeta, hoping that his words would comfort the troubled Saiyan Prince.

Vegeta turned large dark eyes on Goku and smirked. “Yeah, I guess you're right. Whatever we find, we find.”

Still, the Saiyan Prince was finding it hard to contain, or hide, his disappointment.

Vegeta circled down to the ground, and landed on the corner of what appeared to be a broad avenue. Goku landed on the sidewalk behind him. It looked to be a modern city, akin to some of the larger cities on planet earth. Vegeta gawked up at the skyscrapers, craning his neck. Goku scratched the back of his head as he too seemed in awe of the modern splendor around them.

“Kakarot, it seems that without the taint or stain of Frieza, our people have prospered.” But with a look of unease, Vegeta regarded the deserted streets. “Then again, I don't see anyone and for a city this large, that would seem odd.”

At once, both Saiyans heard noise, the sound of many voices calling out in unison. The noise echoed behind them. They turned and looked down the long side street that they were on and saw the next avenue. The noise came from what appeared to be some kind of parade headed up that avenue. They looked at each other and without saying a word flew in that direction, keeping close to the buildings to stay out of sight.

Close enough to make out faces, Goku and Vegeta pressed into a doorway as they watched both men and women alike, dressed in uniform as they marched in formation, carrying rifles at their shoulders. What they had heard earlier and afresh now were commanders yelling out orders and soldiers yelling back in unison.

Goku looked at Vegeta, and was troubled to see the look of worry on Vegeta's face intensify. Goku whispered, “Hey, Vegeta, what's wrong?”

Vegeta looked at Goku blankly for a moment, then answered, “Kakarot look at them. They're not Saiyan.”

Goku spun his head back towards the procession, and yes, from what he had seen of Saiyans, these people did not appear to be of his race. They were too small, without any visible muscle tone and mostly fair-haired, there only being just a few brunettes throughout the crowd. For the most part, it was clear that this was a much more subdued race than the warrior race of both Goku and Vegeta.

Goku turned back to Vegeta. “But where are the readings coming from?”

They had long ago shut off the sound on their radars, but the image still showed numerous readings about them. Vegeta stared at the radar as both men put out their ki sensors - yes, there were Saiyans around them - a lot of them.

Suddenly, a palpable wave a fear swept through the crowd and was felt by the two Saiyans watching them. The soldiers took position, all going down on one knee, rifles cocked and aimed at the sky.

“Oh my…!” was all Vegeta said, unable to finish his voiced thought at the dawning horror of realization.

Goku snapped his head in Vegeta's direction and saw that Vegeta's face had gone white with fear.

“What is it? I don't understand.”

Vegeta turned his white face, blank with shock and looked at Goku.

“WHAT IS IT?!” Goku actually shook Vegeta's shoulder to try and break him out of the spell.

With that, Vegeta, obviously not caring who saw him, stepped out from the doorway and looked up at the sky. Goku followed Vegeta's gaze and saw, that even though it was still daylight, the moon, a full moon, shown clearly and brightly in the pink sky.

Vegeta said, “We're dead.”

Goku blinked at Vegeta, then heard and felt a reverberating rumble that robbed him of his hearing and shook the ground he stood on -- a sound that sent shivers down his spine. The sound bounced off all the buildings and echoed down the caverns that were created by rows of skyscrapers pressed together. The sound was met by another. And another. And another.

And it continued to multiply.

Goku looked back at Vegeta, who, white faced, stared back at him, in plain shock.

“VEGETA?!”

Goku started to tremble, just beginning to guess what Vegeta obviously already knew. Vegeta looked at Goku, and shouting above the din of roaring breaking out all around them, “We're in the middle of the Tuffle-Saiyan War! It's a full moon. AND WE DON'T HAVE TAILS!!!!”

Then the roaring was upon them.

* * *

They heard and felt the trembling of Oozaru walking and jumping all around them.

“SHIT!” screamed Vegeta as both Goku and Vegeta flew down the corridor of concrete, trying to escape down the side street as the building they were just tucked into collapsed from a well-aimed and strong Oozaru fist pounding on it from above.

Vegeta and Goku weaved in and around buildings, turning down block after block, occasionally having to backtrack, FAST, when a pair of Oozaru legs jumped out in front of them. Vegeta and Goku's departure was usually hastened by streams of fire blazing forth from the beastly maws of the Saiyans in their most primitive form, as they tried to capture the tail-less pair as if they were mere flying insects. It was obvious that the Oozaru sensed Goku and Vegeta's ki, making the pair tempting targets. However, as easy as it was for the Oozaru to pick them out, Goku up ahead of Vegeta, was having a hard time keeping track of Vegeta's ki with all the other Saiyan ki blazing to life around him.

Goku was having difficulty with all of his senses as he pushed to fly as fast as he could, trying to block out the carnage he saw. For all the fighting Goku had been involved in throughout his most interesting life, Goku had never seen a full-fledged war.

Vegeta, though, barely spared a glance at the thousands of dying Tuffles beneath them.

The Tuffles fought as best they could, firing all their technological might at the beasts, but there was nothing they could do. Oozaru by the thousands had descended on the city and what had been a shining beacon for both Goku and Vegeta only an hour before was being reduced to smoldering rubble in just minutes.

The planet trembled, as caustic vapors filled the skies. Goku and Vegeta, speeding through the sky, realized that they had several Oozaru in hot pursuit. Oozaru were not used to creatures that flew from them as they did. And as all Saiyans, these Oozaru loved a challenge.

Goku up ahead of Vegeta was suddenly pounded by an Oozaru fist as a great ape jumped out of the nearest side street to attack him, sending Goku barreling through asphalt.

“KAKAROT!!!”

Vegeta, not caring that there was an Oozaru upon him, twirled down to the ground and straight through the crater that Goku created, right to the sewer system of the Tuffle City. He found Goku struggling out of a pile of rubble, shaking his head to clear it of sudden fog. As Vegeta got to Goku, helping him to stand fully upright, an Oozaru foot broke through the crater, sending asphalt shooting all around them. Goku and Vegeta flew to get away, right through the sewer and up through the asphalt until they were outside once more. When they emerged, they found themselves facing a fresh batch of Tuffle warriors, their rifles trained on the pair.

“More Saiyans!!” A Tuffle yelled and the rest of the Tuffles aimed and fired at the pair. Goku, thinking fast, put up a ki shield and the flames from the canons aimed at them bounced off harmlessly. But a sudden heat behind Vegeta and Goku urged the two Saiyan's forward as another Oozaru, hot on their heels, sprayed the earth with his flammable breath, disintegrating all the Tuffles where they stood.

Again, the two Saiyans weaved in and out of side streets and even through a few Oozaru legs. Finally, getting to a pocket that seemed a little quiet and battle free, Vegeta turned to Goku, tired, hurt and out of breath. He looked frustrated at what he had to say, but as proud and battle hungry as Vegeta was, he was also pragmatic, “We've got to get back to the ship and out of this City or we're going to get killed.”

Goku just nodded, equally out of breath. They tried to get their bearings and determine where exactly they were. They realized that just two blocks away was the shoreline, so they made their way in a straight line as fast as their bodies would take them, but of course, several Oozaru spotted the tail-less Saiyans and pursued them. Vegeta and Goku were easily eluding them, only just one block away from the shore, when an Oozaru, appearing out of nowhere up ahead, plucked Vegeta out of the sky.

“VEGETA!!” Goku screamed. He saw Vegeta flare to Super Saiyan, trying to struggle out of the beast's fist, but it was a losing battle. The Saiyan Prince started to scream in agony as his body was crushed.

Goku, acting immediately, gathered ki, “Kame…”

“Hame…”

“HAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!”

The blast he sent, straight to the Oozaru's face, blinded the Oozaru and in sudden pain, the great ape released Vegeta from its grasp. Goku flew to Vegeta's falling body and caught the unconscious Saiyan Prince in his arms. Goku, not sparing a moment, feeling Oozaru ki at his heels as two more Oozaru came very close, flew like a comet. They had senzu beans with them, but there didn't seem to be a safe place for Goku to put Vegeta down long enough to give him one. Goku decided to head back to the ship as quickly as possibly. Finally over the ocean, Goku felt the first relief since they arrived in the city knowing that the Oozaru could no longer pursue them, although one did try, splashing into the water uselessly behind them.

* * *

Vegeta chewed the senzu bean, his head in Goku's lap, Goku looking down at him in concern. It was clear that without a senzu bean, Vegeta would never have had the use of his body again, his spine having been snapped. But after a moment or two, the Saiyan Prince sat up, his hand to his head.

“Do you need another bean?”

“No, I'm all right.”

They both heard a fresh chorus of roars across the water and looked up to see several buildings, at once, collapse. Before the buildings were fully down to the ground, a great mushroom cloud of fire appeared about a mile further south.

At one point, as Goku had administered the bean to Vegeta, Goku had put his ki sensors out and felt that this war was not just one battle in one city. This was happening all over the planet. On the other side of the planet where there was no full moon as of yet, Tuffle soldiers were donning uniforms and eating the last meals of their lives. Saiyans were slowing infiltrating their cities so that when the moon finally hit, their Oozaru forms would sporadically spring up throughout the city, each city, and rain death upon the unprepared Tuffles.

Vegeta stared at the shoreline across. The skyline was barely a skyline anymore.

“How could it be happening now? Why the delay?”

Vegeta looked at Goku in confusion. Goku shrugged, shaken by all that he had seen and powerless to do anything about it. Even if he could do something about it, was it his place? On some deep level, Goku understood that this war was destined. As horrifying as it was to witness first hand, he knew that he was an outsider here, Saiyan or not, and this was not his war to interfere with - the realization was eating at him.

“I don't know. I guess that even though both planets started off the same, it just took this one much longer to get to this point.” Goku was interrupted as they both heard a horrifying roar. To their shock, they saw an Oozaru running into the water, his body covered in flames. Vegeta stood up, looking angry and outraged.

Goku did not feel the same sympathy, and it was clear. Vegeta saw the look on Goku's face and glared at him.

“Don't tell me you are worried about those damn Tuffles?!”

Goku just glared at Vegeta, saying nothing. Vegeta searched Goku's eyes for an answer, then scoffed. “It figures, you were never really one of us anyway.”

That angered Goku even further, but he kept his mouth shut. He knew that if they were to get into it now, that there could be some irreparable damage done and they would be reduced to the relationship they had when they first met. It was obvious that being on Planet Vegeta again was doing things to his companion, reminding Vegeta of his old ways, thoughts, and behavior. And Goku had to admit to himself that he understood it. If he had grown up as Vegeta had, he would probably feel exactly what Vegeta was feeling now.

But Goku saw something in Vegeta's stare besides anger. It was frustration and hurt. As angry as Vegeta was over Goku's obvious sympathy for what was happening to the Tuffles at this very moment, it was clear that he wanted Goku to understand. It was important to Vegeta.

Vegeta turned angry eyes on Goku and then pointed at the city. “You remember what that city looked like before, right?” Goku nodded, his stare still hard. “Opulent, right?” Again, Goku nodded silently. “How many Tuffles do you remember seeing?”

Goku blinked. “I don't know. Maybe a few thousand.”

Vegeta smirked mirthlessly, “That's right, Kakarot. And we saw both male and female soldiers right?” Goku nodded again. “In what is probably the most important battle in this planet's history, right?” Goku, looking annoyed, had to nod yet again.

Vegeta regarded Goku silently, his ebony eyes smoldering in anger. “So, it is a fair assumption to make that every Tuffle that could fight, is fighting, right?”

Goku nodded again.

“And there were only a few thousand. Maybe ten or twenty thousand to be generous. In that large city. That huge city. That colossal and extravagant city.” Vegeta pointed at his radar, holding it close to Goku's face so that Goku could see it clearly. He had thrust his arm towards Goku so fast and with such force that the radar had almost hit Goku in the face. “Where are most of the Saiyan readings coming from?”

Goku looked at the radar. Then he looked at the skyline and pointed north of the city.

“Look over there again and tell me what you see!”

Vegeta glared at Goku as Goku, perplexed, looked again to where he had pointed. “Some mountains.”

“Are they forested mountains?”

Goku looked. No, actually they seemed quite barren. With the realization, Goku's eyes opened wide. Vegeta smirked and with derision said, “And there are hundreds of thousands of readings coming from there. You realize what this means, don't you?”

Goku looked at Vegeta, pain in his eyes, as he realized what it all meant. “Those Tuffles, that you feel so sorry for, shunned our people. Chased them off to those barren mountains while they, so few, lived in such opulence. I've always read in our histories how they had thought themselves above us, called us beasts, chased us away. But now, seeing with my own eyes, it is clear as to what extent this intolerance existed. It was unfair. And our people had, no, HAVE, to take matters into their own hands.”

And now, Vegeta glaring at Goku, pointed a finger right in Goku's face and shouted, “And you dare question them! You, a low class Baka! HOW DARE YOU?!”

“Vegeta, calm down. I will admit that I do not know what our people have faced here. I'm sorry, but I can't help but feel what I feel…”

Vegeta interrupted him, threatening to lose all control, “I cannot believe you! What did I ever… Why did I ever lower myself to…” Vegeta roared at the sky and Goku got up, looking at Vegeta sadly.

“Vegeta, I will not hold judgment against the Saiyans in this. I will go with you when you meet with them and will hold my judgment until then, Ok?”

Vegeta stared at him, breathing heavily. “Judgment?” He asked calmly, but his calm tone did little to hide his seething anger. “You would hold judgment.” Vegeta spat at the earth at Goku's feet. “Just who do you think you are?”

Goku looked at Vegeta knowing that it had gone too far already. They would just not agree on this and it could very well end their friendship for good.

Vegeta saw the look of frustrated disappointment coupled with resignation as to the reality of the situation on Goku's face. He, feeling equally at the point of no return, turned his back on the younger Saiyan and headed towards the capsule to wait the battle out away from Goku.
