Ryo's face went deathly pale. In a moment of sheer panic, he turned to run back into the school, but an icy grip on his wrist forced him back.
“What lucky timing on my part. It must be fate,” Martin said, sneering.
Ryo couldn't have envisioned worse timing and he hoped desperately that Dee was on his way.
“Get your hands off me!” the blonde boy yelled, trying to sound threatening.
But Martin wasn't so easily rebuffed.
“Shut your mouth, do you hear me?” he spat with vehemence.
Before Ryo could utter a response, the teacher shoved him up against the nearby brick wall with such force it knocked the wind out of him.
“I was just about to go see the Dean. I was hoping to convince him to drop all this nonsense with the Hearing, but now I think you're going to do it for me!”
“What are you talking about?” Ryo asked, hoping to keep Martin distracted with talk while he waited for Dee to arrive.
Martin leaned down so Ryo could feel as well as hear his words and the blonde felt a chill of revulsion grip him at the man's nearness, “You're going to tell the Dean that this was all a mistake. Say that you regret the trouble you caused us both and withdraw your charges against me.”
Even in this dire situation, with Martin cornering him in the desolate, cold night, Ryo would not give in to the man's manipulation. His pride and temper flared even as the teacher tightened his hold on his wrists and pressed him into the icy brick with his body.
“I'd never do that! Never!”
Ryo expected Martin to become incensed and angry at his retort, but instead he sneered, which was somehow much more disturbing.
The teacher gave a sickening little laugh. “By the time I'm though with you, I think you'll change you mind.”
Martin proceeded to take both his wrists in one hand and let his free hand wander to cup Ryo between his legs.
The unfortunate boy struggled to rip away, unable to comprehend what was happening to him. But it was useless, Martin's grip was like a vice.
“Stop!” Ryo shouted in desperation. “Stop! No!”
Martin's cruel laughter was the only answer to his pleas.
The blonde's mind spun. Dee! He cried silently. Please, Dee help me!
Suddenly there was a sound behind them- a crunch in the snow. Martin paused in his attempts to unbuckle Ryo's belt. The boy could hear him waiting in worried silence.
Please, please Dee! Anyone! Help…
In the next instant a light was flashed upon them, a familiar voice calling out, “Let him go, Martin.”
Ryo blinked against the light, his vision blurred by his tears. It wasn't Dee's voice…
“Dean Winsor!” Ryo said. He was astonished to see the older man walking across the courtyard with several people following in tow.
For a moment Martin just stood there frozen in silence, then he turned on Ryo, his features contorted in rage. “You planned all this didn't you! God damn brat!”
His hand came up to strike Ryo across the face, but blow never fell.
As if materializing from thin air, Dee was suddenly there by his side, Martin's wrist in his grip. Dee's eyes were burning with a wrath and vengeance Ryo had never witnessed before.
“You don't EVER touch him!” Dee roared, just moments before his fist found Martin's face.
The punch was solid and strong and sent the man sprawling in the snow, which quickly turned red from the blood oozing from his now-broken nose.
“You worthless piece of shit!” Dee yelled, stepping forward to land another blow straight into Martin's stunned face.
The dark-haired boy seemed oblivious to everything around him except Martin and his desire for revenge, but the Dean had come up behind him.
“Laytner!” the man bellowed. When the boy didn't heed him, he yelled again, “Dee, stop!”
But it took two other men to pull Dee away and Martin looked sufficiently pummeled by that time.
“You'll be expelled for this Laytner!” Martin spat when he was able to stand once more. “Dean Winsor, tell him!” the teacher demanded, ignoring the fact that he had just been caught red-handed molesting a student.
“I'd keep my mouth shut, if I were you Martin,” the Dean warned him. “I had my suspicions about you and now I see they were correct. No need to finish the Hearing now, is there?”
The Dean waved his hand and the men holding Dee released him to take a hold of Martin. Ryo squinted in the moonlight and saw they were a pair of police officers.
“You have the right to remain silent,” one of them began, as the other cuffed the former teacher's wrists.
“You can't do this!” Martin screamed as he was dragged away.
Dee wasn't sure if this was sufficient revenge for what the man had done first to Aaron and then to his own Ryo, but he supposed he would have to accept it. At least he would never be able to hurt anyone else.
“Dee,” came a plaintive voice, cutting through Dee's heavy thoughts.
The greaser turned to see Ryo racing over to him. Dee caught him as the blonde flung himself into his embrace.
The dark-haired boy felt his lover shaking as he sobbed against his chest.
“Mr. Laytner,” the Dean said, stepping up to him, “you shouldn't have attacked Martin like that! I warned you to control yourself.”
The raven-haired boy said nothing. He really couldn't care less if the Dean approved of his actions. In his opinion Martin deserved far more punishment than Dee had given him. Looking down into Ryo's tear-stained face, Dee knew he would've done anything to keep his precious lover safe from harm. Pulling Ryo closer, he stroked the boy's blonde locks and hushed comforting words into his ear to calm him.
As he stood watching Ryo sob in Dee's arms, Dean Winsor knew he had agreed with Dee's actions, but he couldn't totally condone them either.
“I'll overlook what happened since it was extenuating circumstances and because you helped us snag Martin, but be careful in the future Mr. Laytner,” he finally told him.
“Yes, sir. Thank you, sir,” Dee replied and realized he meant it. He knew the Dean had every right to reprimand him for striking Martin, but he was happy to see that the man recognized the depth of his pain and resentment when it came to the former teacher. Dee would have punched Martin either way, but it went a long way in gaining his respect that the Dean wasn't going to be a tight-ass over it. Of course, this might have been tied to the fact that the Dean wanted to keep the whole situation with Martin very hush-hush so that the school's reputation would remain untarnished and he was securing Dee's compliance by letting matters be. Rather than having the Hearing find one of their teachers guilty of sexual misconduct, now the school could hide the truth and simply say Martin decided to leave on his own- with no one the wiser.
Still, Dee knew that the whole reason the Dean had confidence in setting up the sting was because he believed Ryo was telling the truth in the first place and Dee would remember that.
“Can I take him inside now?” Dee asked, indicating Ryo, who was still shaking in his arms.
“Yes, of course,” Dean Winsor replied.
Without hesitation, Dee scooped Ryo up in his arms and headed inside. And even though he was carrying Ryo, he felt that a heavy weight had been lifted off his shoulders now that Martin would be behind bars and Ryo would remain within the Academy.
When they arrived back in the dormitory, the whole place was astir. Many of the boys had heard shouting outside and seen the light on in the Dean's office. Someone even said they saw a police car out front, but most people assumed this was exaggerated gossip.
Dee disregarded the curious faces that peered at them as he carried Ryo back to their room. The blonde kept his head tucked safely against Dee's chest, content to ignore the onlookers.
Ted poked his head out of his room and Dee gave him a nod, but didn't stop. A few doors down, they saw JJ emerge from his room- his hair tousled and clothes obviously thrown on in a rush. When Drake popped up beside him, clothes disheveled and half-undressed, Dee's eyes went wide. It appeared as if they'd just stumbled out of bed… together. Could that be right?
The greaser watched as Drake caught Ted's bewildered gaze. Drake shrugged and JJ, now aware that others were ogling them, blushed furiously.
Huh, Dee shook his head, who would have thought- Drake and JJ! Tomorrow he'd rib his friend endlessly about this affair, but for now he needed to focus all his attention on Ryo.
Dee could feel Ryo's relief once they were back within their room and away from prying eyes.
“Ryo, love, are you alright?” the raven-haired boy asked when Ryo continued to sit trembling on his bed, a haunted look in his eye.
“What just happened Dee?” he finally asked. “Did you use me to set up Martin?”
Dee felt guilt stab him in the chest, as sharp as any blade.
Sitting down next to Ryo with a heavy conscience, he explained, “When the Dean asked me to see him, he wanted to talk to me about setting up a sting for Martin. I didn't want to use you to get to him, but it seemed like the only way to be sure that Martin got sacked. The Dean said that most members of the school board were ready to clear him and expel you. I couldn't let that happen, Ryo.”
For a long time the blonde remained silent, digesting this information. He understood why Dee had done it, but…
“You could have told me. You could have warned me.”
Dee winced, pained by the hurt and accusation in his lover's words.
“I'm sorry,” he said, taking hold of Ryo's hand, “The Dean didn't want you to have any knowledge of it. And frankly, I didn't either. I didn't want you to worry about it. I was nearby the whole time, Ryo. We stepped in as soon as we had enough to convict Martin. I never would've let anything happen to you.”
“But I didn't know that!” Ryo cried, his eyes tearing once more. “I felt so abandoned and alone and… and that bastard was touching me!”
Immediately, Dee had pulled Ryo into his arms, tears stinging his own eyes as he felt the blonde sob in misery.
“I'm sorry Ryo! I'm so sorry!”
Once Ryo had released his strained emotions, he felt better and as he came back to himself and his surrounding, he found that Dee was still cradling him, the greaser's face wet with tears.
“Dee,” he whispered, looking into those unbelievably green eyes.
“Ryo, can you forgive me?” Dee pleaded.
The other boy's ensuing smile was like sunshine breaking through a dark night and a balm to Dee's aching heart.
“Yes, but let's promise to always be honest with each other from now on.”
Dee nodded vigorously. “Yes, yes! I promise!”
Ryo had to laugh at his love's enthusiastic response and hugged him tightly.
“I love you, Dee,” the blonde boy said softly.
“And I love you. I'll always love you, Ryo.”
The two young men smiled at one another. It had been a long and hard road to arrive safely in each other's arms, but they would never take their relationship for granted. Their appreciation for the love they shared would serve to see them through future struggles and challenges. In a sense, for Dee and Ryo, love truly did conquer all.
* * *
“Dee, get up! We're going to be late!” Ryo said, pushing at the heavy body lying a top him.
“Hmmm…?” the dark-haired boy murmured, ignoring Ryo's words and pulling the blonde tighter against him.
“Dee! It's less than an hour til the graduation ceremony! We have to get out of bed!”
Cracking open one sleepy eye, Dee pouted at his lover. “Just a little longer?” he pleaded.
Ryo gave a sigh. As always, it was nearly impossible for him to say no to those beseeching emerald eyes. How long had it been now since he first beheld that gaze? It felt like he'd never been without it, that somehow Dee had been beside him his entire life, but in truth it had only been a few years.
After that horrible semester with Martin, Dee and Ryo had arranged to room together and they'd been inseparable ever since. They shared every holiday and became part of each other's respective families. Ryo's Aunt and Uncle had come to embrace Dee, although they often worried about where their relationship would end up and how they would fair in the world once they left the comfortable boundaries of the school.
And that time was quickly approaching. After the ceremony, they would only have a week to pack and be out of the dorm. Dee would go back to the orphanage and Ryo would head home. Of course they would visit over the summer, but they would both be busy preparing for their move in the fall. Ryo had been accepted into Stanford on the West coast and Dee was considering entering the police academy. The blonde had enjoyed teasing Dee about joining the force, considering the trouble he had gotten into as a kid.
“That's why I'd be good at it!” Dee had protested, “because I understand the criminal mind!”
Ryo had laughed and given him a warm hug. It didn't matter to him what Dee decided to do after graduation, as long as they were able to stay together. Dee hadn't been thrilled about the idea of leaving New York, however. For a while he even considered staying and trying for a long-distance relationship, but in the end he knew he needed to be with Ryo. Besides, they could always move back East after Ryo finished college.
Sensing Ryo's thoughtful mood, Dee leaned up on his elbow and looked down at him.
“What's on your mind?” the raven-haired boy asked.
Ryo turned to him and smiled. “Nothing. Are you awake now?”
Dee gave his lover his trademark grin. “Maybe. If I wake up, how will you reward me?”
“Your reward will be getting to the ceremony on time!” Ryo snickered.
“Humph. That's not much of an incentive.” The greaser lowered his head and brushed his lips behind the blonde's ear.
“Dee! Seriously, we'll be late!” Ryo cried, panicking as he felt his resolve ebbing away.
“Do you really think that's enough to stop me?” Dee whispered, claiming Ryo's mouth in a forceful and demanding kiss that the blonde couldn't help but respond to.
“Your incorrigible!” Ryo whimpered as Dee made his way down his throat with his lips.
“And you're my willing accomplice!” Dee teased, tossing open the other young man shirt and letting his hands explore Ryo's sensitive skin.
“Nnhhh,” the blonde whimpered, biting his lip to hold back his cry.
Dee worked quickly, stripping his lover naked in seconds just before he threw is own clothing aside.
Despite his initial reluctance at the late hour, Ryo soon gave himself over to the raven-haired boy's demands. He arched his back into Dee's touch as the other young man's strong hands wrapped around his waist and squeezed him in just the right way to make Ryo feel helpless and unbearably aroused. His hands tugged at Dee's dark locks as the other boy licked and kissed his way down along his torso, deliberately teasing Ryo with his skillful touch. Now aching and desperate to move things along, Ryo pushed down on Dee's shoulders, indicating his need.
The greaser grinned up at him and Ryo was sure he was going to test his patience, but, mercifully, the raven-haired boy dipped his head to envelop the blonde's waiting erection.
“Ahhh!” Ryo gasped, thrusting his hips up eagerly.
As he sucked at his lover's cock, Dee quietly grabbed the vile of lubricant he kept stashed under the mattress. With Ryo distracted, he coated his fingers and pressed them against the blonde's entrance.
Dee could care less about the time, but he was aroused to the point of pain by Ryo's quick and heady response to his actions. As usual, the greaser couldn't help himself when it came to his sandy-haired lover.
Ryo pushed himself down onto Dee's fingers and looked at him with unveiled anticipation.
“I need you,” he pleaded.
“Couldn't have said it better myself,” Dee replied, stroking his member until it was as slick as his fingers.
“I never can get enough of you, Ryo!” he said as he felt the young man's tight channel admit him. Though he tried to hold back, he soon found himself thrusting wildly into his lover and, to his great delight and untold pleasure, he felt Ryo lift his hips to meet him.
“Ahh! Ryo, I'm not going to last long!” Dee warned him, overcome by the blonde's erotic moans and the way his body felt beneath him.
Their lips met and they breathed in each other's rapturous sighs, every thrust bringing them closer to the edge of ecstasy.
Perhaps it was the knowledge that this would be one of their last times together before the summer months of separation and the long years of school and work ahead, but the two lovers opened themselves to each other as they never had before. When Dee felt his orgasm hit him, he opened his eyes to see Ryo shaking beneath him as they climaxed together.
Everyday it seemed they grew closer and Dee kept Ryo wrapped tightly in his arms long after they collapsed in a heap together on the bed.
In a few minutes they would have to get up, get dressed, and face the world, but for now they would bask in the small, peaceful space between them. For it was this, more than anything else, that kept them together- the fact that each of them found an oasis of unconditional love and support in the other's arms. And that no matter how many trials they went through and how many `Martins' they had to deal with, their souls had found respite in one another… a port in the storm.
