Chapter 2. Doubt and Suspicion

“Ryo… Perv… I'm home,” Bikky yelled as he slammed the door behind him and sauntered into the kitchen, flinging his backpack on the ground and opening the fridge to survey its contents. “Hey, is anybody here? I'm starving!”

“Don't answer him; maybe he'll go away,” Dee mumbled groggily from underneath the blankets as he lifted his sleep-tousled head and glanced at the clock on their nightstand.

“Dee, be nice,” Ryo murmured as his dark eyes opened sleepily, feeling the sensation of drowsiness slowly leave his body. He stretched, arching his back as he rolled over and looked at the clock. Ryo blinked in surprise at the late hour, silently berating himself for not thinking to set the alarm before they had drifted off for a nap. Well, not that he had been worried about such matters when Dee had put his talented tongue to work worshipping every inch of his body. A heated blush raced across Ryo's cheeks as he recalled what they had been doing for most of the day, and he shook his head to clear it of the suggestive thoughts. He was getting as bad as Dee.

The honey blond disentangled himself from Dee's arms, pulling back the sheets as he got out of their bed. Turning towards the bedroom door, he yelled, “I'll be out in a few minutes, Bikky. There's some fruit in the fridge if you're hungry until I make dinner.”

Dee watched Ryo's movements as he gathered some clothes into his arms and made his way into the bathroom. “So, I guess we won't be taking a shower together after all,” Dee lamented regretfully as he got out of the bed and stretched, revealing his perfectly toned frame. Damn Bikky for ruining their sex life once again.

“I guess not, but it's okay, Dee. Bikky needs us now. I can't believe we fell asleep for three hours,” Ryo said quietly, blushing further as he realized that Dee had physically worn him out.

Dee moved behind Ryo and snaked his arms around Ryo's sleek waist, pulling him tightly against his bare chest and causing Ryo to gasp at the contact. Dee brought his mouth down to lavish heated kisses across the sensitive flesh of Ryo's neck as he gently stroked his hands across Ryo's flat stomach and sides. “Don't be long,” Dee whispered seductively, bringing his hand down to squeeze Ryo's firm ass before releasing him.

“Dee, you're insatiable. Now go get ready for dinner,” Ryo said firmly as he tried to look stern. His body belied his words, and a shiver traveled up Ryo's spine from the intimate contact despite himself. The honey blond closed the door behind him, stepping into the shower as Dee sighed and lit a cigarette.

Dee gazed out the bedroom window as he sat and smoked. Their time together had been just what they needed to reaffirm their relationship, and Dee had been grateful for it. He had even promised to work an extra nightshift so that he and Ryo could have off on the same day, although he hadn't told Ryo that that had been part of the agreement. He was willing to do anything for Ryo, even if it meant putting in extra hours to catch up on their seemingly endless paperwork. Ryo was the best thing that had ever happened to him.

Upon further reflection, Dee realized that he never wanted to live without Ryo, and he honestly didn't know if he even could. He had vowed that he would do everything in his power to keep Ryo by his side, and the words that he had spoken to Ryo one year ago were reaffirmed with a vengeance. I'll never lose you to another guy. No, Dee amended; he wouldn't lose his Ryo to anyone. He loved Ryo so much. Dee knew that he could never let Ryo go.

Ryo let the hot water wash over his sleekly muscular body, his hands gently traveling across his pale skin where Dee's had been just moments before as he lathered himself with soap and closed his dark eyes. Dee was the only man, no - the only person, who could make the usually reticent honey blond feel so totally and completely loved. Although Ryo was still uncomfortable with displays of affection in public that indicated they were more than just friends, he could not deny that Dee had a hypnotizing affect on him that made him blush warmly whenever he gazed too deeply into Dee's intense emerald eyes. He just hoped that Dee realized the extent of the struggle that he went through every time he had to be honest about who he was in front of another person. Ryo wondered how much longer Dee would be okay with getting the cold shoulder while at work or with Bikky around and then having him be open and affectionate behind closed doors. Dee hid it well, but Ryo could sometimes see the underlying hurt residing behind the guise of his piercing emerald eyes.

Ryo found himself craving Dee's touch even more when he didn't allow the dark-haired man to even steal a kiss from him at work, depending on how busy the station was. It was part of the reason why Ryo was so passionate when they finally got to be alone together or make love. Dee was endearingly patient with him, but the honey blond felt that it was not fair to keep pushing away what he so desperately wanted. Every man had his limit, and Ryo did not want to discover Dee's.

Ryo savored the contact from the heated spray as he washed himself off, deep in thought, and stepped out into the misty room. He loved Dee with his whole heart, and nothing could change that. Now if he could only conquer his shyness and be able to show the handsome raven-haired man how much before he inevitably pushed Dee away.

Minutes later, Ryo emerged from the shower and made his way out into the kitchen. “Hello Bikky,” Ryo greeted his charge as he tied an apron over the faded jeans and white button-down shirt that he wore and started boiling water. “How was your sleepover at Lai's?”

“Cool; we went to that basketball court down the street from his house and played all afternoon today,” Bikky said enthusiastically, munching on an apple as he sat at the kitchen table.

Ryo smiled as he cut up some vegetables. He was glad that the rambunctious boy was starting to settle down somewhat since he had taken him in. Although Bikky still retained his tough guy attitude with others, he had come to respect Ryo and to allow his relationship with Dee. Bikky had begrudgingly accepted that Dee was not going anywhere, and he really wanted to see Ryo happy, even if that meant that he had to share Ryo's attention with Dee. He still fought with Dee, but it was more out of tradition than anything else.

“Hey,” Bikky said suspiciously as he watched Ryo prepare the food. “What the hell is wrong with the perv today? I thought you guys wanted to be left alone in the apartment.” Bikky knew that Dee would never pass on an opportunity to be alone with Ryo and would definitely take full advantage when one presented itself.

“What do you mean?” Ryo asked, puzzled, as he turned to look at Bikky questioningly.

“Well, I saw him in Lai's neighborhood. He was getting into a limo across the street from the court where we were playing. He was dressed in this really fancy suit and even had a driver and everything. He was pretty convincing. You'd almost think that he was rich or something.”

A slight frown appeared on Ryo's handsome face at this information. “But that's not even the strangest part,” Bikky continued. “The stupid perv totally ignored me. I waved to him and called out, but he just got into the car and didn't even glance my way. What a dumbass.”

“But that's not possible. He was here with me the whole day. Are you sure that it was Dee?” Ryo prompted, more confused than ever. Bikky nodded vehemently, which only made Ryo's frown deepen. He was not aware of any undercover assignments that Dee was working on without him. That would seem the only reason possible for his strange behavior and for blatantly ignoring Bikky. If he did not want his identity known, why hadn't he just explained to Bikky beforehand so the youth would not jeopardize his cover being blown by an innocent mistake? It didn't make sense. Besides, Dee had been with him the whole day… or had he? Ryo and Dee had fallen asleep together, but Ryo had been exhausted and had slept deeply. He wouldn't have noticed if Dee had left and come back in the meantime. Three hours would have been enough time for Dee to assume his façade and return, the peacefully sleeping Ryo being none the wiser.

Seeing Ryo's growing unease, Bikky shifted in his seat uncomfortably. He had not meant to upset Ryo by the information, but he hated to think that Dee would not treat Ryo right. With Bikky, trust was not given freely; it had to be earned. Ryo was too trusting, and even though Dee had been deemed trustworthy so far, Bikky did not want to see him get hurt. He would have to keep a closer watch on Dee.

Just then, Dee strolled into the kitchen, raven hair still damp from his shower. He wore a black tank top with the letters NYPD across the front and tight dark blue jeans that hugged his frame invitingly. “Hey Bik,” he said in greeting to Bikky as he walked over to Ryo and snaked his arms around Ryo's waist from behind. “Hey babe,” he whispered into Ryo's ear as Ryo gasped softly in surprise and subconsciously leaned back into Dee's touch, a warm blush spreading across his fair cheeks.

“Get your filthy paws off of Ryo!” Bikky yelled warningly, interrupting their tender moment. “Just because it's your stupid Anniversary doesn't mean I'm giving you any slack with him. I don't know how he put up with you for so long anyway.”

“Hey monkey brat, relax. The same could be said for you. I just came into the kitchen to see if Ryo needed any help with dinner,” Dee said nonchalantly as he released Ryo and sat down at the table, lighting a cigarette.

“You did not. You can't cook for shit. You just wanted to grope him and now you're mad because I'm here too and you can't,” Bikky stated in triumph.

Dee's mouth fell open at the accusation and he bristled before admitting defeat and laughing. Bikky knew him too well. He brushed a strand of his ebony hair out of his eyes and got up to set the table for dinner, leaning over and planting a quick kiss on Ryo's cheek when Bikky wasn't looking.

“Hey Perv, what's the big idea with ignoring me earlier today?” Bikky asked harshly as they all sat down and Ryo began serving the meal. Ryo listened intently, wondering what Dee was keeping from him. He did not know what to make of Bikky's accusation, and wanted to know the full details of the story before coming to a final conclusion concerning the matter.

“What the hell are you talking about?” Dee asked as he glared at Bikky. “This is the first time I saw you today, and since when would you even want to acknowledge that you know me in public anyway?”

“Don't act stupid,” Bikky said. “Earlier today, at the basketball court by Lai's. Don't you remember? I called out to you, but you were too busy getting into your fancy limo to reply. In fact, you flat out ignored me. What's that about, and who was that other guy driving? Why wasn't Ryo with you? Trying to be super cop with a new partner?”

“That's bullshit. Why would I be riding around in a limo? I was here with Ryo all day. Ask him,” Dee said, his green eyes flashing. He looked at Ryo for support, but was only met with Ryo's downcast eyes. If Dee had apologized or made up an excuse, Ryo would have accepted it, but Dee had outright denied the whole incident. Ryo didn't know what to think.

Ryo had been silent throughout this whole time, and that worried Dee. Usually the honey blond broke up the fight or left the room when Dee and Bikky argued. The raven-haired man wondered what his partner was thinking as Ryo continued to sit quietly and look troubled.

“Hey Bik, why don't you leave us alone for awhile? I have to talk to Ryo,” Dee said softly.

The brash teen for once didn't argue with Dee, and mumbled something about being late for a movie with Carol to Ryo before grabbing his coat and walking out the door.

After Bikky had departed, Dee clasped Ryo's hands in his and asked softly, “Ryo, what's wrong?”

Ryo looked up at Dee and saw concern present in his deep green eyes. He did trust Dee, but it still hurt that Dee had not been completely honest with him. “Where were you earlier?” Ryo questioned hesitantly, not wanting to put Dee on the defensive by accusing him of doing something wrong before getting all the facts straight. “Were you out planning something else for our Anniversary, or did it have something to do with an undercover case that I was not informed about? You know that you can tell me anything, Dee.”

“I seriously have no idea what you are talking about, Ryo,” Dee said as he saw the hurt look in Ryo's eyes. “I was here with you the whole day. After we exchanged gifts and had incredible sex we both fell asleep. I woke up when Bikky got home. Why don't you believe me?” Dee pressed, somewhat hurt that he would have to explain himself to Ryo after he had just answered similar questions from Bikky.

“I want to believe you,” Ryo said uncertainly. “It's just that Bikky seemed so sure, and he wouldn't purposely try to upset me. I just want to know what's going on.”

“That's what I'd like to know,” Dee said in frustration as he irritably lit up another cigarette. “I wake up and have two people practically jumping down my throat for something I didn't do. In fact, I have no idea what you're talking about. You know that I would tell you if I was working on a separate case from you, and I already told you that I was taking you out to eat for your other present. I'm not hiding anything. Just trust me, Ryo.”

Ryo saw the look of sincerity present in Dee's emerald eyes and he stood up and sighed. “You're right. I'm sorry, Dee. I'll speak to Bikky tonight about who and what he saw and get him straightened out. I'm sure it was just an honest mistake. I didn't mean to upset you. Please forgive me.”

“Come here, Ryo,” Dee said with a smile as he pulled Ryo close against him and kissed him softly upon his perfect lips. Ryo parted his lips as Dee deepened the kiss, sliding his tongue inside Ryo's hot mouth and savoring the delicious taste of his dark eyed lover as his hands roved across Ryo's back, sliding temptingly lower.

Ryo clutched Dee close as his breath quickened in excitement and closed his eyes as he felt Dee's velvety tongue dip inside of his mouth. This felt so right, so good. As Dee wracked Ryo's mouth with a passionate insistence, Ryo felt his knees go weak and he murmured quietly into the kiss, encouraging Dee with his soft moans as Dee pressed their bodies tightly together and snaked one hand around Ryo's waist for support.

Dee broke the kiss and looked into Ryo's beautiful eyes, darkened in passion, his face flushed in pleasure. God, Ryo was so tempting. Dee tenderly brushed back a wisp of honey hair from Ryo's eyes and leaned down to claim another kiss from the soft lips that he could kiss forever.

A sharp rapping at the door caused Ryo to tense up. “Goddammit,” Dee muttered as he reluctantly pulled away from Ryo. “That apeshit had better have a really good reason for coming back here this early.”

“He probably just forgot his key or something,” Ryo said practically. “Don't worry; we can pick up where we left off when you get back.”

“Promise?” Dee asked, his emerald eyes gleaming.

“Yes,” Ryo whispered shyly.

Ryo watched Dee walk away and smiled when he heard Dee mutter, “Key, my ass.” He knew that deep down underneath all the insults that passed between the two, Dee and Bikky cared for each other.

Dee walked over to the door and flung it open, ready to yell at Bikky for interrupting his promised time with Ryo. He blinked in surprise as he came face to face with a UPS delivery man.

“I have a package for a Mr. Dee Laytner at this address,” the muscular brown-haired man with piercing gray eyes said with a no-nonsense attitude as he placed a very large box down on the ground.

“Uh, yeah, that's me,” Dee replied, appraising the plain cardboard box curiously.

“Sign here please,” the man said, handing Dee a pen and indicating the white rectangle at the bottom of the delivery form.

“Dee, if that's Bikky, tell him to return those tapes that he rented from the video store,” Ryo said as he walked into the living room, drying his hands on a dishtowel. He stopped when he saw that Dee was busy with the UPS man. “Oh sorry,” Ryo said apologetically as he turned to walk back into the kitchen.

“No problem, Ryo,” Dee called to the honey blond as he hastily scrawled his name and handed the pen back to the man. “Just a routine delivery.”

The man took the pen with a satisfied smile and departed with a brusque, “Thank you, sir.”

Dee closed the door and picked up the package, shaking it in an attempt to determine what it held before using his keys to slit the packing tape that held it shut and revealing its contents.

“What is it?” Ryo asked as he came to stand beside Dee and look over his shoulder.

Dee pulled out a thick stack of plastic-wrapped magazines and smiled wickedly. “Porn,” he said simply before shuffling through them and enjoying the look of shock that was on Ryo's face. “Wow, there's like thirty different ones, featuring men and women. Here you go - dig in,” Dee said as he handed Ryo one with a fireman on the cover.

“Dee, I can't believe you! We've just had sex three times in the last two days and you feel the need to order all this pornography?” Ryo yelled in disbelief, feeling slightly embarrassed as he surveyed the scantily clad men and women in suggestive positions adorning the covers of the various magazines. He placed his magazine down on the coffee table huffily. “God, how much did you get? I could see one or two, but this had to have cost well over three hundred dollars. We don't have that kind of money.”

“But Ryo, I didn't order it,” Dee protested as he examined the box. “I thought it was a present from you. Someone else must have sent it to me. Hmm, there's no return address on the package.”

“Don't start, Dee. That package is addressed to you, and therefore you must know something about it. You're not getting out of this that easily,” Ryo said as he started to place the magazines back into the box.

“Ryo, I have no idea where it came from. Maybe it was Drake and Ted playing a prank, or someone else sent it,” Dee said placatingly.

“What other possible explanation could there be, Dee? Who would randomly send you a supply of that much free porn? It had to be you. Don't lie to me,” Ryo said, a warning glare present in his dark eyes as he crossed his arms across his chest.

“I'm not lying,” Dee said in frustration as he raked his fingers through his dark hair. “How much worse could this day get? I am as much in the dark about this as you are, Ryo. Look, I'm sorry to upset you, but I'm telling the truth.”

Ryo took a deep breath to calm himself as he noted Dee's sincere expression. He was so confused. It had seemed that Dee was up to something, and strange occurrences for which the raven-haired man had no explanation for had happened twice in the same day. Furthermore, Dee had used the same excuse in both cases, leading Ryo to believe that something was definitely going on. He wondered where Dee had really been that afternoon, and he frowned worriedly. Maybe Dee was finally getting tired of him keeping their relationship under wraps.

“Look, Dee,” Ryo said quietly as he lowered his expressive eyes. “I have no idea what is going on, but if you're not happy with an aspect of our relationship, you know that you can talk to me about anything.”

“No, Ryo, that's not it,” Dee said quickly, hating to see Ryo look so upset.

Ryo cut him off. “Please, I just want to be alone right now and think. We'll talk in the morning before work when you can tell me what it is.” He walked to their bedroom and grabbed a blanket and pillow, which he placed on the couch. “Goodnight, Dee,” he said coolly before walking back to the bedroom and closing the door.

Dee watched Ryo leave with disbelief, too frozen in shock to say anything. He was more confused than ever. What exactly had happened that day, and why did no one seem to believe him when he was telling the truth? He only seemed to dig himself into a deeper hole the more he tried to explain himself. It was no use talking to Ryo now when the honey blond was upset; he would only aggravate the situation. He stretched his long legs out on the couch and tried to find a comfortable position, laying his head on the pillow as he turned out the light and let his eyes adjust to the semi-darkness surrounding him.

Dee's gaze dropped to the package that sat next to the coffee table and his emerald eyes narrowed. Whoever had sent this Pandora's Box had certainly known what they were doing. He would get to the bottom of it tomorrow. For now, he would try to sleep alone, although he doubted if he could. Ever since he had been with Ryo, it felt wrong not to hold the other man in his arms through the night. Ryo was having the same thoughts as he lay alone in the bed, a bed that felt empty and cold without Dee in it.

The UPS man exited the apartment complex and walked a block until he got to a black BMW M5 Coupe with tinted windows. He discretely clicked open the locks and got into the driver's seat, removing his hat as the shrewd man in the back seat closed his laptop and addressed him. “Hello, James.”

James started the car and pulled out into the city traffic. “Hello, sir,” he replied as he accelerated through the streets.

“Well, did you get what you needed?” David asked casually as he exhaled a plume of smoke and leaned forward.

“Yes,” James replied. “It appears that there isn't a security system installed in Dee's place, and the lock pick that you have should work nicely in opening the door to the apartment.” David nodded in satisfaction as James continued and handed him the mail form that Dee had signed. “I was also able to obtain Dee's signature as you requested. It should be no problem to transfer it onto your fake driver's license.”

David smirked as he glanced at Dee's messy scrawl, his deep green eyes memorizing the script. “A young child could easily duplicate this signature; it's almost unreadable. This is almost too easy.”

He ran his fingers through his newly dyed black hair and leaned back against the seat. “So, does he do me justice in the looks department?” David asked with a charming smile.

James glanced in the rearview mirror and scrutinized the almost exact reflection of the man he had just spoken to minutes earlier. Colored contacts had allowed David's piercing eyes to transform from a pale blue to an emerald green. The shorter length of his hair accentuated his roguishly handsome features, and the use of a tanning bed had slightly darkened his skin tone so that it matched Dee's natural coloring. He and Dee were of similar height and had the same sleekly muscular body frame. Their resemblance was further emphasized by the confident, outgoing personalities that commanded attention and brash, no-nonsense attitudes that both men possessed.

“Yes, I think that you could easily be mistaken for him by his friends and colleagues, although I'm not sure about his unconventional family. He lives with his partner and their foster son, although I'm still trying to locate a picture of the boy. You would have to know all of Dee's idiosyncrasies in order not to bring about suspicion,” James said practically.

“Very well. More research shall be done,” David said as he ground out his cigarette, opening his computer and typing busily. “I have to go to the precinct tomorrow anyway in order to execute step two of my plan. I will bring Dee down and make him pay for what he did to me. You do have the floor plans of the 27th precinct so that I am able to find my way around, James?”

Seeing James nod, David turned his attention to the laptop in front of him as he scanned the precinct's database. He brought up the raven-haired detective's schedule. “Hmm, it seems that he is working second shift tomorrow with his partner, Randy MacLean.” David pressed a button and smiled in delight as he enlarged a group picture of all of the detectives in the Criminal Investigations division. He zoomed in on each of their faces, memorizing their corresponding names as he went along. David's intense gaze lingered on one man in particular, kind dark eyes highlighting the detective's genuine smile. “Ah, so this is the gorgeous blond that Dee lives with. Well, this could get very interesting,” he mused. “Hello, Randy; meet your new partner.”

“No, not Randy,” James said with a small smile, preventing the one vital flaw in David's plan. “Dee called him Ryo.”
