Chapter 6: Discussions

LAST TIME:

There was a flash of light and then Endymion was seemingly dragged out of the room by invisible means.

Once he was gone, all the senshi relaxed and detransformed.

“Now,” Rei said, turning towards Ami. “Perhaps you can tell us what's going on?”

Ami blushed.

NOW:

She stuttered briefly before closing her eyes and breathing deeply. “We all know that we did the spell wrong. That brief hesitation before we finished cost us more than I'm ready to admit at this stage.” She took a deep breath. “The magical backlash may, or may not have altered reality.”

Rei counted to ten, and tried to control her temper. “What, exactly, does that mean?”

Ami sighed. “Before the spell, Serenity was supposed to be the daughter of Queen Selenity, right?”

Her audience nodded.

“Then why does Serenity's DNA tell me that she's a niece instead of a daughter?”

There was silence.

Ami continued. “Not only that, but there is a large portion of her genetical make-up that is currently missing, as if we have the embodiment of only a third of a person. So many things are missing on the genetical level…genes from her mother, genes from her father….” Ami rubbed her forehead. “It makes no sense.”

Setsuna sighed. “Is there a way to fix it?”

Ami nodded hesitantly. “We need to join her soul with Usagi's.”

Large protestations.

“Serenity is only the way she is right now because she is lacking a true genetical make-up. If what she has was supplemented by Usagi's, Serenity would be normal. The added bonuses include increased powers -“

“What are you talking about?” Minako shouted. “Usagi is a person, not some thing to be used! That spell was sheer bullshit and you know it! You knew it before we ever tried it! Just because none of you were comfortable with Usagi's darkness, you had to destroy her!”

“What are you talking about?” Michiru asked.

Ami and Setsuna looked away, unable to bear the accusing look Minako was giving them. “Do you really think that Usagi was evil? Just because her soul became tainted by murder and death and bitterness and betrayal, time and time again…” Minako broke off. “Darkness does not necessarily mean evil.” She looked directly at Haruka when she said, “Or do you plan on destroying Hotaru too?”

Haruka paled.

Rei stood up. “Enough.” She said it quietly, but had no trouble attracting the other's attention. “We are all tired. We are all miserable. I suggest we take a night, or two, to think about what we are trying to achieve before we meet up again.”

Hesitantly, everyone nodded and began to troop out.

Rei wished them a goodnight, hugging each of them as they left her room. As Setsuna was about to leave, Rei grabbed her arm and pulled her back in.

“You and me need to talk, Meiou-san.” Her voice was quiet, her tone clipped and tight. “We need to discuss a lot of things,” she began as she closed the door.

And locked it.
