Chapter 1: Death
Mina Chang stared at the doorway outside of her house, waiting for her husband Evan to come home from the market. She sighed as her older daughter Chloe stepped outside.
“Did Dad come home yet? I'm waiting for him so he can drop me off at this party on the other side of town.” Chloe said.
“Oi, Chloe…your father supposed to help me cook some beef stew tonight… Why don't you stay home and help us two?” Mina replied.
“Why? Mom, this is going to be the best party of the year! And besides, your beef stew isn't all that great.”
Chloe walked back into the house. A few minutes passed and Evan's blue Beetle, backseat filled with grocery bags, pulled up into the driveway. Mina ran to the driver's side and kissed Evan.
“Evan! I'm so glad that you're home! Come on, I'll ask Jamie to help you with the bags.”
Jamie is another one of Evan and Mina's children. Although he isn't a child anymore, as well as his fraternal twin Chloe, his younger sister Carly is one.
Evan held up his hand. “No, no Mina…I got it…seriously, sweetheart.”
“Evan, don't use your powers outside!”
“Why?” Evan asked with a innocent face.
“Honey….” Mina lowered her voice. “What if the neighbors see?”
Evan closed his eyes and focused his energy. Mina looked at the bags as they started to float towards the house. The front door suddenly opened and the bags went into the house, one by one, landing safely on the living room floor.
Mina was now looking for prying eyes around the scene, as Evan walked into the house. Before he had fully stepped into the doorway, he called Mina.
“Coming sweetheart!” Mina yelled to her husband. She followed him into the house, closing the door behind her.
Little did Mina know that someone was really watching them.
“Evan, I have the broth on boil. Are you finished taking the skins off of the onions so I can clean them?”
Evan brought a sifter full of onions to the kitchen sink. Mina came right behind him and began washing them.
“What's wrong Evan?” Mina asked.
Evan shook his head. “Nothing…nothing at all.”
Mina looked at him. “Sweetheart…are you worried….” She started. Evan suddenly looked up at Mina.
“…about your father?” Mina continued.
The room became silent except for the sounds of the broth bubbling over the stove, Mina's steady and Evan's heavy breathing. Suddenly, Evan broke the silence, which was a first in the Kayos family history.
“Y-Yes Mina.” Evan stammered, his breathing becoming faster. Mina laid her hand on his shoulder and said, “Honey calm down…breathe.”
Evan shuddered, closing his eyes.
“If I hadn't disappeared that day, who knows what would happen to me…I've could've been dead by now.” he said. Mina kissed Evan and said, “Don't worry about it. You're alive now, so don't worry about it… If your father wants to kill you, I won't let him.”
“Okay Mina, and if it turns out to be the other way, I will always protect you through thick or thin.”
Mina smiled, and then turned back to washing the onions. Vivid thoughts of Evan's pain and suffering in his childhood came to her mind. Her head started to pound in pain at the thoughts. She shook her head, and finished washing the onions.
Evan, tired from standing for so long, sat slowly on the kitchen stool, facing one of counters near the sink, and laid his head on the marble surface of the counter.
Unexpectedly, the kitchen doors opened to reveal a middle-aged man. Evan and Mina turned around slowly, and then gasped. Mina dropped the sifter full of onions on the floor, spilling them in all directions.
Stopping an wet onion on the floor with his foot, the man moved from the shadows of the door, into the brightness of the kitchen. Evan recognized him immediately and his eyes grew wide with fear. “Dad….” He said, under his breath.
The man chuckled, showing his aged features in the paleness of his skin. His hair and eyes were both dark brown, with wire frame glasses shielding his eyes. It was clear, that this man was definitely kin to Evan Kayos.
“Oh Evan…my wonderful son…why did you leave me and your mother alone in that house?” The man asked, walking closer to Evan.
Evan, horrified, stepped back. Mina held her husband's arm, now shaking softly. Evan's heart leapt in his chest as his father suddenly lunged towards him, missing and crashing into a counter full of pots and pans.
“I told you not to leave me, didn't I? You defied my command Evan, and I'm going to show you what happens when you defy me!”
“Thomas, leave Evan alone!” Mina screamed. Evan was speechless. His father had been abusive towards him for years, and Evan had to break away. Since he now has a wife and 3 children, Evan sees that his father wants to destroy that and turn his world upside down.
Suddenly, there was a flash of light as Mina leapt to her husband's safety, and took the psychic blast that Thomas had targeted Evan with. There was a thud on the floor, and Mina's lifeless body laid there, eyes wide open, with a trail of blood coming from her mouth.
