Chapter Two
Vow of the Prince
The stone walls of the palace gate loomed before Dagger as she walked alongside it.
She pulled the Royal crest from her pouch and looked at it. Something like this would bring
in a good chunk of change for her. Kavin could have a nice slab of vinison for a change
instead of the stringy shit she had to dry and preserve for them to eat when jobs were low.
Dagger tossed it in the air and caught it deftly. She hoved it back into the pouch and
stopped in suddenly.
She was close to the iron wroght gate entrance now. Dagger crouched down and leapt
up onto the wall. The guards weren't far off, but they would never know she'd come. Dagger
dropped down into the empty courtyard. A large fountain sat in the center, spraying a thick
stream of water up to the black velvet sky. She bent down next to it and dipped her hands
into the crystal clear liquid. Dagger drank deeply of the fresh water, wipped her mouth on
the back of her hand, and made her way silently to the palace entrance.
The moonlight painted her long silver hair, causing it to glimmer in the dark
courtyard. Her sharp ears caught the sound of Kavin's low growl from near the large bushes
planted beside the large oaken double doors. The large white tiger stepped out from the
shadows and sat before his mistress.
"The king accepted your proof?" she asked.
Kavin nodded his large head. "Yes." he replied. "He's awaiting your proof before
he'll give payment."
Dagger scoffed. "Tight-wad bastard!" she growled. "Let's go."
No guards were posted at the front door since they had them at the gate. Dagger let
her hand fall to the nape of Kavin's neck and they walked into the palace undetected. She
evaded the guards standing about ten feet from the front door. Dagger made her way,
unhendered, into the king's throne room.
The old man sat in the cushioned throne, his head lolling to his chest as he began
to nod off into sleep. Dagger let out an ear splitting whistle, causing the old man to yelp
in fright and become fully awake in seconds. Kavin laughed, but Dagger knew that to the
king's untrained ear, it was nothing more than a low growl.
King Hedral cleared his throat and locked his peircing gaze on the arrogant young
woman standing before him. "Did you bring it?" he asked, his raspy voice grinding Dagger's
already short nerves.
Dagger pulled the bloodied arrows from the quiver and threw them at the king's feet.
She pulled the Crest out of her pouch, tossed it into the air, and smirked when it smashed
into the marble floor. Shards of the Crest flew in all directions and Dagger smirked in
evil pleasure.
"Wench!" King Hedral growled.
Dagger glared at him, still smirking. "Pay me and I'll be on my way, your Highness."
she said, her tone dripping with malicious mockery when she spoke his title.
The king pulled a pouch of gold from his side and tossed it to her. Kavin caught it
in his mouth, paced in front of his mistress, and growled. Dagger gave the old king a mock
bow and turned on her heel. The muffled scream of the king made her whirl around. The old
man lay in a puddle of his own blood, a dagger hilt sticking out of neck. From behind the
throne came a young man in a bloodied black tunic.
"Prince Daedryk!" she gasped. "You're suppose to be dead!"
Daedryk chuckled malicioulsy. "That's what you thought." he said. "Now you have to
die just like my father did."
Kavin roared loudly. "Sorry son of a bitch!" he growled.
Prince Daedryk only gave the tiger's roar a glance. "Your kitty is being very
naughty." he said. "We have to fix that."
"You bastard!" Dagger growled.
Daedryk only smirked. "You'd better run." he said. "GUARDS!"
Before Dagger or Kavin could move, ten gurads charged into the throne room, swords
at the ready. They're eyes flew from their dead king's corpse, to the prince looking
horrified, and to the young woman with daggers, a bow, and a quiver of arrows. Dagger glared
at the prince, flashed the guards a glare, and leapt towards the window over the throne.
Kavin was close behind her when she leapt from the window ciel and into the boughs of a
rowan tree.
"I will have your head mounted on my wall, wench!" the prince shouted.
Dagger tore through the courtyard, dodging arrows that rained down on her and Kavin.
A shaft hit her in the shoulder, but all she did was grunt in pain and keep running. Kavin
roared as they came to the stone walls. Dagger scrambled up and over while Kavin had no
problem leaping over the wall. She slammed into the ground, stunned for a moment by the
impact. The large white tiger bit into her tunic and began tugging at it.
She crawled away from the wall and into the bushes. Kavin took her tunic into his
mouth, dragging her farther away from the castle and the enraged prince.
"I will have your head mounted on my wall, wench!" the prince had shouted.
His voice rang in her head as her feline companion drug her to safety.
