The Mercedes pulled up into the drive, moving to a stop and being placed in park. Alex took off his seatbelt and got out of the car, looking up to his parents two story house as he shut the door. It was a quiet, urban area; a perfect place indeed. He adjusted his nice dress shirt and stepped up to the door, knocking on it. After a few minutes, the door opened, and his father stood there, smiling.
Matthew opened the door for his son, Alex.. and Alex stepped inside, giving a simple hug to his father and then looking for his mother. It sounded like she was in the kitchen, cooking up dinner.
"Thanks for inviting me over, dad." Alex said, and reserved a warm smile from Matthew, who led him into the living room. Alex watched as Matthew sat down in the chair next to him.
"Your mother is making a very special dinner tonight, since she knew you'd be here. She'll be happy to see you." Matthew said, continuing to watch Alex with that smile.
"I know. I'll be happy to see her to. I need a break from all the action I've had in the past few days." Alex gave a soft laugh.
Within an hour, they were all sitting at the dinner table. Alex had almost dived into the fresh salmon his mother had cooked, but decided to keep his manners.
"I'm worried that one of these days your not gonna arrive at our door," Alex's mother said. Alex of course knew that Jill was referring to his job. He sighed a bit and sat back in his chair, and then offered a reassuring smile to her.
"It's not as bad as you may think. I get my fair share of action, but usually I'm a good distance away," said Alex, taking another bite of the delicious salmon. "I had some action the other day. Though it turned out pretty weird. Ended up all the way down some country roads and at the sea." He chuckled to himself.
"Oh? Where at exactly?" Asked Matthew after he chewed up some of the salad he had.
"Not sure. It was really weird though. We were chasing these guys who just robbed a bank.. really heavily armed, too. I was put with the helicopter unit. We ended up at some really big mansion. I don't know much about it. The guys put up a barricade in the lobby.. and we were put in through the roof. What was really weird.. is when we got down to the lobby.. they were all dead," Alex sighed and leaned back, looking up the ceiling in thought. He hadn't noticed that his parents looked at each other in deep surprise and fear. "They were all mangled and stuff. No one has an explaination of what happened."
Matthew managed to speak after a minute, but fear hinted in his voice. Alex could sense it, too. "Do.. Do you know what the place was called?"
Alex nodded. "Yeah. Or at least from what I heard, it's called the Zimmer Estate. Why? Is something wrong?"
Matthew just stared at Alex, while his mother had practically dropped her fork. They both stared at him. Alex spoke again, "What?"
"Don't go back near that place, Alex.. don't ever go in it again. It's not a safe place," said Matthew. His tone was very serious. Alex knew that his father rarely gave that kind of tone.
"Tell me. What is so bad about the place?" Alex frowned, putting down his fork. His hands came to rest in his lap.
"I don't care if you believe me or not. You have to promise me you won't go back near there, ever again," Matthew replied.
"Fine. Alright," Alex nodded in agreement.
"It's haunted."
"It's.. haunted?" Alex blinked and arched a brow, and then leaned back, crossing his arms about his chest. "I mean.. I guess that would explain the death of those criminals. But.. how is it possible? And how do you know?"
"Because me and Matthew have been there, and we've seen it all. Please, just take our word on it. It's a horrible place," Jill spoke now.
Alex thought this was all too strange, but he knew that his parents wouldn't just be telling him this. "Alright, I'll take your word on it. Let's just relax a bit," Alex smiled reassuringly. His parents both smiled and nodded, and they continued eating.
But Alex was very uncomfortable now. Something was bothering him, and he knew it was that mansion.
"Your what?" Alex frowned, putting his hands on the desk, staring at the Chief of Police.
"I just told you. I'm sending you and a team back to the Zimmer Estate to investigate the place. Our own investigators are scared shitless and have already pissed their pants after they saw the bodies that were dragged into the morgue. We have no blueprints of the mansion. We don't even have information about the damn place, other then it's called Zimmer Mansion, and it was a hotel at one time, and a living quarters afterwards," the Chief said. He was a big black man, who seemed to fit just right in that chair. Of course, Alex knew he was going to have to listen to him and do what he was told.
Alex was hesistant to tell the Chief that he had made a promise not to go back there. Instead, he made up an excuse. "I told someone that I'd be home tonight. I don't even think I'd be back till tomorrow if you sent the team there to investigate. It's a pretty big place."
"Who? Your girlfriend? You better call and tell her that she's gonna have to keep her panties on for tonight because you have to work," said the Chief, laughing a bit. Alex just sighed.
"Fine, when do we leave?" Alex slumped his shoulders, accepting his unavoidable assignment.
"In one hour."
