Chapter Three “American Girl”

Hazel wandered the halls aimlessly. She had decided that exploring her new surroundings would be a good idea but found herself to be very lost in the many labyrinths of hallways. Hazel didn't really care, she wasn't in a hurry to go back to her room, after all it was empty and she was alone. Being alone never really bothered her since she always had her friend Yakool for company but on the nights when she wasn't asleep right next to him, were rather lonely nights.

Hazel was tempted to leave and go talk to him a bit and see how he was doing but decided against it and leave him alone. He had been taken to one of the many stables and was there getting a well deserved rest as well as some proper food. Hazel sighed taking in the beautiful surroundings and gorgeous architecture before going outside into the open air of the balcony leaning against the meticulously carved railing. “Hello there!” a cheerful voice called and she turned swiftly to her side. A small man sat there, a large book open on his lap. He appeared to be very old and was smoking away on a pipe as he wave over at her. “Oh my…I'm sorry did I disturb you. I can leave” she rambled not wanting to intrude on anyone since she was a guest and that would be rude. He waved her off smiling “Never you mind” before waving her over.

Hazel strode over slowly, she never liked to admit it but she was shy. She stood before him and looked down “Well are you going to sit?…” he said with humor in his voice. Hazel nodded not wanting to seem like an idiot and immediately did as she was told. “Well, I haven't seen you around here.” He smiled taking a puff of his pipe, he was kind looking, short, shorter even then her. He wore no shoes and had hairy feet but she didn't dare say anything as to not seem rude. His face, although very old still looked ornery and mischievous. Hazel's eyes caught a glimpse of his pointed ears behind his mass of curly hair. `A Halfling' she thought to herself. She had never met one in real life as the same with elves and had only heard stories of them from her homeland were neither one existed but they merely existed in children's tales. Hazel turned her gaze back to him “I am staying here for three days by the permission of Lord Elrond” he nodded “Good Elf that one, very kind” he folded his book up setting it aside and then puffing a few times on his pipe again sending rings of smoke into the air.

Hazel usually detested smoking but was always to shy to ask anyone to stop. She didn't seem to have to say anything because he seemed to have read her thoughts and set his pipe aside. “Now” he said raising his hands a little and clapping them on his knees when saying so. “What's your name?” Hazel looked down, then out across the view of Rivendell. “It's Hazel” he nodded “That's a nice name, My names Bilbo Baggins, you can call me Bilbo” she nodded and smiled “Nice to meet you” everything was quiet a moment. “So how did you end up making you way to Rivendell” Hazel looked at him, her soft, quiet smile never leaving her face. “I'm on a journey”. This comment seemed to perk Bilbo up even more right away. “Where too?” he smiled. “Nowhere…I have no destination”. “You know” he said softly as if he were sharing some sort of secret “I've done quite a bit of traveling myself” he winked “In fact, I'm writing all about it in my book” Hazel smiled “That sounds wonderful…may I please see it?”

“Of course” he said eagerly handing her the large book and letting her flip through it. Hazel loved books; she had even attempted to write her own but was never very talented at it. Not like her best friend back home. “How long have you been traveling?” Hazel looked up at him “Ummmm lets see….I guess about seven years now” he nodded “Is your family ok with your traveling in such a dangerous time” Hazel's smile fell “No they don't…actually they don't know where I am” Hazel said softly, Bilbo nodded his understanding and dropped the subject quickly seeing that this seemed to be a touchy subject. Bilbo gazed over her; she was very young, about nineteen or so. Far too young to be out on her own and she looked like she been through Mordor and back and then dragged through a keyhole backwards.

She was a short, small slender girl which looked not much a threat to even a mouse but he could tell otherwise if she'd managed to survive this long on her own. She wore a white shirt with a forest green thinner jacket over it with many pockets that it was held closed by a black belt and then an ankle length, black, long trench coat which was becoming frayed at the ends from being walked on many times from before she grew into it. She was very dirty and had dried mud and dirt smudged all over her. She smiled as she looked over his book, not really taking time to read it but gazing at the detail, most of it she couldn't read. He gazed at her face, a very sweet looking girl once you removed the dirt and grim and he was sure that under her long red bandanna and black hat that she had nice hair too. Her brilliant green eyes glanced up at him behind thick eye lashes. “This is wonderful…” she frowned a little “You will finish it won't you?” Bilbo “Well of course I will, been working on it every day as much as my old hands will allow.”
There thoughts were interrupted by the sound of a horse entering the courtyard. Hazel directed her eyes over, getting up and setting Bilbo's book down so she could take a look. He got off his seat to follow, not far behind.

Legolas quickly dismounted, happy that the long ride was over. Two other elves next to him with blond hair followed suit close behind. Legolas blue eyes gazed about Rivendell. It had been several hundred years since he had been here. His eyes traveled over to the balcony were Bilbo stood; Legolas had heard that he was living with Lord Elrond now, a good place for him too. He smiled before his eyes traveled next to Bilbo to a girl standing next to him. She seemed to be looking in awe at him and his company, her face dirty and her clothes rugged on her slender frame. She was pretty even if she did look like a mud pie. Both there eyes met and he noticed her brilliant green eyes, like a forest in summer. Legolas nodded to her before he and his company left to go settle there horses.

Bilbo looked over at Hazel, whose eyes followed the handsome, blond eyes with every movement he took, completely ignoring his just as attractive comrades, until he was out of site. “Oh no…” he said quietly to himself with a wicked grin on his face. “Good looking isn't he” she nodded absently still looking to were Legolas had disappeared “kind of dreamy…” he chuckled “Mr. Baggins!” Hazel shouted at him. He just laughed harder. “Yes he is attractive, no he is not dreamy. He's just interesting.” Hazel said, returning her gaze to that direction and scratching her arm absent mindedly “Mmmmhmmm” rolling his eyes a little and making his way back to his seat. “I'm telling you the truth” She pleaded and he chuckled “I'm sure you are” “I am…I swear” Bilbo sat back down on his seat, placing his book back onto his lap.

“You best get back to you room and prepare for dinner. You can't show up at the dinner table like that”, Hazel frowned looking down at herself. “I don't know my way back to my room, I was just trying to find my way back when I came out here and you started talking to me.” “I know where it is!” came a unknown voice behind her eagerly, she turned around slowly to see another Halfling, “Ahhh” she screamed a little, clutching her chest. “Sorry If I scared you.” Hazel nodded “My name is Pippin, call me Pip” he held out his hand and she shook it in greeting, still a little startled by him sneaking up on her. He was about the same height as Bilbo only much younger looking. He was cute and had dirty blond hair that was also curly like Bilbo's. “How do you know where my room is?” he smiled and pointed to himself before “I saw you come in earlier and remember where your room is” Hazel glanced at Bilbo who seemed to have a look of pity of his face that Pippin knew where to find her. “Alright then…”

Hazel stared at Pippin un-emotionally as he proceeded to explain why he was here, who his company is and why they were here in Rivendell. She wasn't quite she what to make of a dark lord and the one ring but was sure that it was a good thing she wasn't with this dark lord because this hobbit certainly had a big mouth and was far to truthful and trusting of people, he barely knew her and was telling her `The secret'. She followed him slowly as he quite wildly explained in great detail there trip there. “Is your companion alright” she said, frowning. “Oh Frodo, He's fine, he woke up this morning.” Hazel smiled “Well that's good”. “Well…here's your room” He said rather suddenly grabbing hold of her hand and leading her to a door. “Oh…Ok thank you…” “Alright bye!” and before she could say another word he was off again. She wondered absently to herself if he ever tired.

Hazel was watching Pippin take off briskly down the hall when she turned around and suddenly was frozen stiff, there he was again! The elf from earlier was standing not far down the hall from her talking with the group he had come in with. They were laughing and seemed to be sharing a joke just like a group of men, she wondered a little to herself if Elves told dirty jokes to each other like she had heard men doing and if that's what they were laughing about. Hazel watched them as they talked. They were all tall and slender, almost feminine with there long, blond, braided hair and high cheek bones and thin faces. But the one that had caught her eye was extra gorgeous. He seemed to be the leader of the group. Hazel quickly looked away nervously as he raised his blue eyes and met hers. `Shit!' she said a little to herself realizing she had been caught staring. She immediately walked over to her door and tried clumsily to open it as she glanced over and realized he was coming over and his friends had went on there way down the opposite way of the hall.

Faster then she could get her door open he had strode over and was standing right next to her in a matter of seconds. Hazel gasped at how fast and soundless he had managed to come over. `Oh holy hell!' she said in her mind, sure that he was going to tell her to mind her own business. “Hello…” he smiled and she smiled and nodded. Neither one said anything, Hazel was to shy to say anything and Legolas waiting for her to speak. “I'm Legolas I saw you earlier with Bilbo” She nodded and smiled more “Yeah, I know, I remember you” his blue eyes gazed over her again before they finally settled on her brilliant green eyes. “I'm Hazel” he nodded “You name doesn't suit you” her smile fell “Oh, sorry” she said sadly, he laughed at her shyness “Don't be, I was just thinking that your far to pretty to be named after a color” Hazel blushed “Well what do you think I should be called?” Legolas shook his head a little “I don't know”. Silence….they stood there a few moments without saying anything.

“What does Legolas mean?” he looked down the hall were his companions had retreat and absently fingered his shirt before gazing back at her “It means green leaf” she laughed “Now who's the one with a simple name that doesn't suit them!” he laughed with her. But is soon ended and was replaced by uncomfortable silence. She scuffled her black boots a little against the beautiful polished floor, nervously. Legolas absently continued to finger the hem of his shirt again. Although it was barely noticeable he appeared to be nervous as well. They were each looking around until Hazel immediately turned her gaze to him. “Do you know how to work the baths?” she said a softly. It was true that each room had a bath to it but she had no idea how to work it. He nodded “Yes, I can show you if you want?” “Ok” she said softly and opened her door allowing him in first. Hazel followed but left the door open. Although she was sure that he wasn't going to hurt her, she could never be too cautious. Besides, she usually left her door open whenever she had a room since it reminded her of home with all the people walking by.

Legolas walked in taking a look around and waiting for her to follow him. The room seemed untouched until he noticed a pile of things in the corner. She came in and then followed him to the bathroom. He leaned over to the levers, “This ones hot, this ones cold, this on starts the flow of the water and from there you just have to fiddle around with them till you get the temperature right.” Hazel watched him quietly while he explained it, never taking her eyes off him and his smile never leaving his face. He was very kind “Thank you” she said softly, he stood back up and looked at her “You're most welcome” he stared at her “Are you coming to dinner” so shook her head “No, I've got some rations in my bag. I don't want to impose” Legolas laughed “You'll offend Lord Elrond more if you don't come to dinner. He'd most likely take it that you avoiding him” Legolas lied, actually he was hoping he might talk to her more. Hazel frowned “Oh, no I wouldn't want to avoid him. He's been nothing but kind to me” Legolas looked at her turning his head to the side “I can come get you when it's time.” Hazel nodded and smiled largely “yes, that would help. Thank you…your very kind”

AN: Hazel is painfully shy so she didn't have much to say in this chapter. I hope you liked it and please forgive my bad spelling. If the whole Legolas, Hazel thing was confusing or whatever don't worry. It will get better from here. Since she is so shy I didn't want her to seem to outward or aggressive. This IS NOT A MARY-SUE!
American Girl
Well she was an American girl
Raised on promises
She couldn't help thinkin'
That there was a little more to life somewhere else
After all it was a great big world
With lots of places to run to
And if she had to die tryin'
She had one little promise she was gonna keep

Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy, baby
Make it last all night
She was an American girl

Well it was kinda cold that night
She stood alone on her balcony
Yeah, she could hear the cars roll by
Out on 441 like waves crashin' on the beach
And for one desperate moment
There he crept back in her memory
God it's so painful when something that's so close
Is still so far out of reach

Oh yeah, all right
Take it easy, baby
