Chapter Four “True”
Hazel lay curled in her bed taking up only a forth of the mattress when curled in a fetal position she wrapped herself in the covers like a cocoon. The stars shone through the open doors of the balcony not far from her bed. She liked it here in Rivendell, everyone was so kind and generous and easy on the eyes also, everything was so open and connected with nature. Crickets chirped outside and she could distinctly hear the sounds of frogs in the distance. Hazel's eyes, wide awake scanned the floor of her room. A few leaves had blown into her room and rustled against the floor. Only a few sounds could be heard in the hallway of a few elves making there way to there homes but other then that everything was silent. A tear ran down her face but she quickly wiped it away. Even after all this time alone she still got homesick. She missed her family and friends and her home sickness even went so far as for her to miss her desolate homeland.
Here she was, in comfy bed, in a beautiful city, in the house of the elves she had heard so much about from the tales from her best friend and even had made a few friends today, but yet she still felt saddened that she wasn't at home in her room listening to her mother or aunt walk about upstairs across the creaky room at night, or having one of her cousins sneak into bed with her when they had a bad dream, jolting her awake when tiny chilly feet connected with hers.
Hazel sat up, pushing the downy soft comforter off of her and setting her feet on the cool floor. The moon shown in, giving a soft glow to the room and an eerie feel to the darkness about her making it seem a dream. Hazel slowly walked out onto the balcony, which seemed to stretch to every place you could want to go in the house of Elrond. She smiled a little `I wish mom could see this, she'd love it' Hazel sighed a little, once again saddened by the memories of home.
Hazel stepped out onto into the moonlight darkness looking about, she didn't see anyone else, and they were all probably in bed. A short walk was in order maybe that would tire her enough to take her mind off home. A warm breeze blew sending her long black hair back in waves. It wasn't cold and this was actually very good weather compared to what she was use to in the summer where it seemed as if the very air around you could crush you from the heat and humidity. Hazel was lost in her own little world she never noticed that someone had fallen into quiet stride with her and walked along with her silently a few seconds before they said anything.
“Enjoying your stay?” she looked up suddenly next to her and stopped. “Lord Elrond!” she said is surprise, but trying to keep her voice down as too not wake anyone. He smiled a little, “Sorry if I scared you, you should know that wasn't my intention” Hazel nodded “It's alright, I should have noticed you sooner. Maybe it's just because I scare to easily” he nodded. “Are you alright…most are usually in bed at this time?” Hazel nodded “Yes…but then what are you doing up?” Elrond laughed a little “Point taken” Hazel frowned “No, I didn't mean to seem rude” he shook his head a little taking a seat on a bench nearby and looking at her. The light of the moon shown down on his pale skin giving it an, eerie, un-earthly yet beautiful glow.
“I wasn't offended, you've been nothing but polite.” Hazel sighed and smiled “well that's good”. She still stood a good distance from him, leaning against the railing in front of him. Elrond looked her over. After cleaning all that mud off of herself, brushing her hair and getting into some clean, more feminine clothes, she looked even younger then before. Hazel had insisted on wearing only her clothes and didn't want to have to borrow any. She now wore a plain white night shirt which was light and airy and matching pants. The shirt was a white tank top and was form fitting but other then that it was pretty and simple. Her black hair and green eyes were a stark contrast with the pure white color though and her pale skin was almost a similar white to her clothing. Hazel hoisted herself onto the railing to sit comfortably, her bare feet dangling.
If she her ears were pointed and she were a little taller she could have been easily been mistaken as elf kind, possibly could have passed for Arwen when she was a little girl. “I want to thank you again for letting me stay here” Elrond nodded “Of course” Hazel blushed but was happy it was dark out and hoped he didn't see. He was handsome...in a older mentor sort of way. “Why aren't you asleep, you have traveled such a far way? I'd think you would be dreadfully tired” Elrond looked at her seriously, concern on his features. Although he was rather stern and intimidating looking he was very caring and generous. “I couldn't sleep, I have a lot on my mind” she dropped down from her perch on the railing moving closer before getting the courage to finally sit next to him. “It sometimes helps to talk about those sorts of things” she laughed a little “I don't want to bother anyone with them” he nodded and looked up at the moon a moment, taking in the sky, the full moon reflecting in his eyes. He stayed silent, waiting for her to begin but instead she said nothing and was looking at him in question.
“Why would you want to know?” he looked at her “It might help you sleep better and you telling me about your troubles might help…besides I'm interested.” Hazel smiled waving him off a little “It's nothing that interesting” Elrond looked at her and smiled a little “If I commanded you to tell me would you” he laughed a little, his attempt at a joke obviously she figured. Elrond was so much more different at night and away from everyone else. Hazel laughed a little “Fine, I'll tell you…it's just that. I'm a little home sick” he nodded “How long have you been away from home” Hazel sighed “Seven years…and I still get homesick” Elrond nodded “It's nothing to be ashamed about I get homesick when on journeys too.” “I don't want to go back though…if I can help it that is” she looked at him sadly.
“Did you have a bad experience at home” Hazel shook her head “No…my family loves me. But I don't want to go back to that mediocre life. I wanted to experience more then a life there could offer me” Elrond nodded “I understand” “I didn't want to live there and then wake up fifty years later and wonder what the hell I did with my life” Hazel said, getting a little more bold. “I wanted to get out there and experience different things instead of people telling me how it was.” Elrond smiled a little “You sound very much like a certain hobbit I know” Hazel cocked her head and Elrond's smile grew “Bilbo…always wanted adventure rather than doing what he was expected to do with his life” Hazel laughed “Yeah…”
“What's a fond memory your have of your home” Hazel looked at him “Hmmmm, well…my best friend. She use to tell me stories. I remember she was very good at it. We use to stay up late and tell each other stories. I'm not nearly as good as her though” Elrond smiled “I bet your better at it then you give yourself credit for.” “Maybe…” she shrugged “Why don't you tell me a story of something you've experienced on your travels, and while you do so I can walk you back to you room since I'm sure you'll need help” Hazel blushed and looked at his face which showed humor on it.
They walked back to her room.
Elrond remain quiet as she talked. Hazel was sure she was boring him but he seemed interested and whenever she went to stop he would say “Go on” and she would promptly continue. Once they were to the open, outside doors of her room she finally stopped her story. “I will say this again, you're not as bad as you think you are.” “Thank you Lord Elrond” he nodded “I wanted to ask you…tomorrow, I am having a council. If you would like to sit in on it you are welcome to come. I know you are trustworthy and will keep the meeting secret. I think it would be good for you to come and sit in” Hazel nodded “If that is what you wish” he nodded again. “I would wish it very much…” “Good night…” she said as he turned and was on his way. Hazel gazed around her room before running swiftly to her bed and jumping in it, pulling the soft plush cover up around her. She did feel better and was happy she had gotten a chance to talk to the Elvin lord.
