Chapter 6

Reality snapped back to me with a vengeance as the icy wind changed directions, blowing straight into the old tree. I could have sworn I felt her move. But when I looked down at her, she was still as pale as ever and just as motionless. She was still breathing at least, but just barely. For a split second I saw Lily’s lifeless body in my arms again. I held the girl tighter to me, not allowing myself to shed the tears that were building up in me for the first time since that day.

I heard her slow, shallow breathing become strangled. I braced myself for the inevitable. Now she was dying and it was all my fault. I held her close for the last time. I let her go and shrugged out of my trench coat. I couldn’t look at her face as I wrapped her still form in my coat.

It’s just like losing Lily all over again…

That awful scene flashed through my mind again. The blood on my face, the two bleeding punctures on her throat, her last smile, I saw everything. I looked up through the cracks in the old tree and found a hauntingly beautiful full moon glowing down at me.

I DID lose her again…

I heard her last words again. They echoed through my head.

“Even now… I love you…”

I can’t go on like this…

My hand brushed the handle of my katana. I knew what I had to do. Slowly, mechanically, I pulled the blade from its saya. I took hold of it just above the handle, where the blade is dull. Not dull enough to avoid cutting deep into my palm. In a few seconds it wouldn’t matter anyway. In a few seconds, all my pain would be gone.

I took my last look at her.

I’m so sorry… my little sister…

Finally, I could stand it no longer. I looked down at the sword in my hand, at the blood dripping from my palm and staining the blade a deep red. Positioning the blade carefully, I steeled myself for the blow that would pierce my heart.

I saw Lily in my mind. She was almost smiling, her eyes shining, waiting to have me in her arms again. I smiled back at her and closed my eyes, welcoming the blade that would send me to be with my love again.

Lily… I’ll be with you again soon…

I never expected what happened next.

“STOP!”

The katana dropped from my hand and landed point-down with a dull thud in the rotted wood.

I swung around to look at her, to make sure I hadn’t imagined it. I knew in one glance that I hadn’t. Sure enough, there she was, struggling out of my coat. There she was, pushing herself slowly, painfully to her feet. There she was, stumbling towards me, her hand outstretched. She looked more scared than she ever had.

“Stop,” she said again, her voice soft and choked.

Slowly, her hand came to cover my bleeding palm. Her bright lavender eyes were filled with tears.

“Why would you even think of doing that?”

I looked down at her, letting my emotions show for the first time in so long. When she let go of my hand, the gash in my palm was gone. Slowly, afraid that this might not be real, I wrapped my arms around her, holding her tight. I could feel myself shaking.

“I… I couldn’t have lived with myself if I had killed you.” I stammered. “And I thought I had…”

“But you didn’t…”

I could feel the little strength she had regained leaving her and caught her as her knees gave out. Her arms wrapped around me, trying to steady herself. I just stood there inside the huge tree, holding her close to me as I swayed back and forth, trying to soothe the raging emotions inside myself.

“You’re right… I didn’t…”

I set her back down, wrapping her in my coat again. I pulled my katana out of the rotten wood, not even bothering to wipe the blood off of the blade before sliding it easily back into its saya. I set it aside, knowing that I wouldn’t need it for a while.

I settled back beside the nearly-sleeping Princess. I grabbed the sleeve of my coat, catching her wrist inside it and pulling her to me. She gasped as she fell against my chest. Her eyes snapped open, then fell half-closed.

“Princess…”

“Hm?”

I could tell she was drained. She would need to sleep for a while to get her strength back. I held her close, still cursing myself for what I had done to her. I leaned down to whisper in her ear.

“I need to thank you for something…”

“What is it?”

She sounded so tired. Her soft voice tugged at my heart.

“Thank you… for stopping me…”

“Don’t worry about it… You saved my life, now I’ve saved yours. We’re even…”

She smiled up at me before nuzzling her cheek into my chest, settling in my arms and sighing contentedly. She was sound asleep before she knew it. I looked down on her thin, pale face, allowing myself to stroke her cheek lightly. I smiled. Really smiled. So did she.

“Yeah… We’re even…”

I finally let myself drift off into a deep sleep, with my arms still around her.
