Chapter 8

She looked up at me with confusion plain in her eyes. I knew I should never have been so blunt. I wondered what in my mind had made me tell her that.

“What?”

“I’m sorry… I don’t even know who Terran is, so how could I know where?”

Talk about tactful…

“But… I saw him… He was here with me again… He would have…”

She trailed off, blushing about ten different shades of red. Of course I knew what she had been dreaming. It had been all too obvious. I mean, she almost kissed me, thinking that I was him. I would have hated myself for stealing her first kiss, even if it wasn’t exactly by my own choice.

“I know…”

Her eyes went wide and her face turned pale as she realized what she had done, or rather, what she had been about to do.

“You mean I…?”

She started reeling a little, as if she were going to faint from embarrassment. Quickly, I tried to say something to get her to calm down.

“I know you were only dreaming…” I started out, trying again to be the least bit tactful, but she cut me off.

“So I… was going to…?”

She looked up at me, scared and confused. I knew it would shock her, but she needed to hear a straight answer this time.

“Yes.”

Her face darkened at least five more shades of red, looking down at nothing in particular. I had no idea there were so many different phases of red in the spectrum.

“I’m sorry,” she mumbled, not looking me in the eye, or even looking at my face.

I wondered if I truly repulsed her so much.

Could it be… because of what I am?

A small voice in my mind spoke up.

No… It couldn’t be… She didn’t even think to be afraid of me… She called me “Brother…”

A louder, nastier voice contradicted the first.

But she has been afraid of me from the start…

I was jerked out of my mental conversation by her soft voice.

“We have to find him,” she said suddenly, sounding panicked. “When I saw him, he was bleeding… He looked horrible… He could be dying, and he’s all alone… We have to go NOW! I can’t let him die…”

She looked up at me, begging me to understand. Of course I understood. What I understood was that I was not getting any closer to finding any of the pieces of the Planet Heart. I understood that I was not getting closer to bringing back my sweet Lily.

“Please Sawyer, help me find him,” she begged. “I can’t do it by myself.”

If I was ever going to get the Fire Gem that was currently in her possession, I knew I had better stick with her. At least I could try to buy some time by dissuading her frenzied panic. As gently as I could, I eased my arms around her and held her close, attempting to quiet her frantic sobs.

“Shsh…Princess, it was only a dream… I’m sure it was just reflecting what you are afraid might have happened to him.”

No such luck.

Her hand tightened into a fist in the lining of my coat.

“NO,” she sobbed. “It was real… It had to be… I’ve never had a dream like that before… I’ve never had a dream that was so urgent… I could hear him calling for help…”

I began stroking her back, trying to soothe her.

“Princess, please calm down,” I began. “I’m sure Terran is fine… Your mind was just playing tricks on you, trying to get you to panic.”

She pushed herself backwards out of my arms, glaring furiously. Her cheeks flushed in anger and her eyes flashed silver in the moonlight.

“Do you not UNDERSTAND?” she yelled. “If we don’t find him, Terran is going to DIE! Do you not CARE?”

I jerked back in shock. I had never seen her angry and I never knew she could explode like that. Unfortunately, my nastier side kicked in and I came back with the first biting remark I could think of, the kind that I knew would strike a nerve.

“No… To be perfectly honest, I don’t give a damn what happens to him. In fact, he can die wherever he is and rot there for all I care.”

Her flaming-red cheeks turned deathly white in an instant and I knew at once that I had gone too far. Her eyes went wide for a second, filling with tears, and then the red in her cheeks doubled what it had been before. Lavender eyes turned silver again. They flashed more dangerously than before.

I could practically hear her blood boiling beneath her skin.

“Maybe you don’t, but I DO,” she growled furiously, her eyes taking on a wild look now. “Terran needs help and he needs it now! I’ll find him… even if I have to do it ALONE!”

With that, she pushed herself off the ground and stormed out of the fallen tree, leaving me sitting there dumbstruck.

Every expletive I knew echoed in my head.
