Chapter 10

There was the Princess, but she wasn’t alone. The fact that she was not alone was enough of a shock, but just WHAT was with her hit me all that much harder. She was sitting there on her knees crying beside the still form of a giant red bird. I wondered why she was crying. The bird obviously was still alive. I could feel its life energy. For some reason, the bird’s energy seemed horribly familiar. Then I looked again. There was blood everywhere.

Could THIS be the Terran she had been dreaming about?

I saw her lean close to the huge bird’s head. Her hand flew to her mouth and she collapsed onto the bird’s breast. A red wing with most of the feathers bent in the wrong direction slowly rose and curled around her. I could hear the bird speaking, but it was impossible to hear his words clearly.

Slowly, sliding my katana back into its saya, I approached the two. If possible, I had to figure out how to turn this situation to my advantage. Maybe this giant bird possessed one of the Gems. It was highly unlikely, but at least it probably knew this forest a lot better than I did and could serve as a guide.

I was about to say something, but my words caught in my throat when I got a good look at the two of them. The bird’s shoulder had been split open badly and there was blood staining several feet of snow a deep red. The Princess’s dress had been stained when she collapsed on him. Under her, I could see a slash wound spanning the width of the bird’s breast. My stomach turned.

Finally I heard the Princess choke out a coherent sentence:

“Terran… Don’t leave me…”

The bird spoke in a deep, sad voice.

“Princess… I can’t… I can’t stay…”

“But why?”

I saw a crystalline tear in the corner of the bird’s eye. Strangely, its eye looked almost like a human’s eye.

“It hurts too much… Every breath… so painful…”

“Please… You can’t leave me…”

“Why? Why would you keep me here? What purpose do I serve? I have already failed as your Guardian, my only purpose in life… so it is only fitting that I should not live.”

“That’s not true… You haven’t failed me… And even if you had, I would still love you…”

I could have sworn the bird gasped. His voice came out softer than before. I could tell he was fading fast. He was dying.

“Do you mean it?”

She looked at him for a while before answering. I knew her answer came from the bottom of her heart. Her voice was broken with emotion.

“Of course I mean it. I love you Terran…”

“Oh… My Princess…”

She wrapped her arms around the huge bird…

“Call me Illusia,” she whispered. “But only if you love me too…”

“My Princess… Illusia… My beautiful Illusia… Of course I love you…”

Those dark, humanlike eyes fluttered for a second, then closed…

The Princess went limp, sighing.

“Terran… You’re free… You can be human again…”

I was shocked when a silver glow enveloped both of them. The Princess sat up slowly, the glow around her staying silver as the glow hovering around Terran turned a golden-red color and grew stronger. The Princess’s eyes were completely blank, staring straight ahead, her energy totally focused on his.

The bird’s form hovered off the ground about 6 inches up, with her arms wrapped loosely around him. A bright silver ball formed above his heart. It grew steadily as the energy increased. When it finally turned in on itself and exploded, it sent the Princess’s long hair blowing around them. I shielded my face with my arm.

When the wind died down and the flashing lights stopped, a dead silence hung in the snowy trees. I brought my arm down slowly, wondering if everything was alright. When my eyes readjusted to the dim light, I saw that the huge bird was gone. In its place was a young man with long dark-brown hair laying on the red-stained snow. The Princess was passed out on his chest, her arms draped limply around his neck, and a silvery glow still hung faintly around both of them.

So this is Terran…
