Chapter 3

No… Leave my brother alone! What’s wrong with you!?

“Oh there’s nothing wrong with me. It’s Terran who has the problem…”

So he doesn’t return your feelings; he knows that it’s not meant to be. You should just listen to him and find somebody else!

“No! He’s wrong!”

Really Taelia, just move on! He can’t give you what you want; for crying out loud, you’re ten years old! That’s way too early to be making decisions like this!

“Well then, if I can’t have him, nobody can!”

Taelia, what are you talking a--- ARGH! Get away from me! GAH!

I woke up in a frenzy, whipping my knife out and bringing it around to finally get rid of her. A startled yell echoed through the trees as the blade just missed her. Then I opened my eyes and saw Illusia standing in front of me, looking extremely pissed off.

“WHAT THE F*CK ARE YOU DOING!?” she screamed. “You could have KILLED ME! What the H*LL were you THINKING!?”

I started looking around frantically, panic setting in.

“Taelia… where is she?”

“Huh? What the h*ll are you talking about?” she asked, her eyes still flashing and her hand on her knife.

“The name sounds familiar,” said Terran quietly, pushing himself up from where he had been (leaning against that tree growing behind the log) and gently taking Illusia’s hand, moving it away from her knife. “But I don’t know how… Who is she and where do you know her from?”

I sat back with a sigh. I had resolved that Terran was not going to hear about what had happened that night, so long ago. But now that Illusia thought I was nuts and Terran was on the verge of remembering, I figured they may as well hear the real story. They probably would have found out sooner or later anyway. Terran would have remembered or I would have had another one of those nightmares. Plus, I had almost hurt Illusia. They needed to know what was going on before something unfortunate happened.

“You two both need to sit down. And Terran?”

“What?” he asked, tilting his head slightly.

“Take that knife away from her.”

Illusia glared at me (I could have sworn she growled at me, too), but she handed her knife to Terran and he slipped it into his coat pocket. Both of them settled back on that log, side by side. Illusia’s eyes still held an angry spark, but Terran just looked worried. He seemed to be holding Illusia close to him for comfort. It was gripping my heart like a vice having to tell them this.

“Terran… I swore to myself that I would never tell you this, but considering what just happened, I don’t think I have much of a choice.”

“What are you talking about?” asked Illusia, tilting her head and frowning at me. “I mean, you attacked me and then you go all introspective and---”

Terran pulled her closer, silencing her.

“Illusia, please,” he said softly. “This is important.”

She looked up at him, confusion and concern plain on her face. He couldn’t look at her, only stared at the ground. I could almost tell what he was thinking. I figured I may as well just bring it out in the open.

“Taelia was the reason for everything that happened that night. She was the reason for what I did.”

“Koura… What are you saying?” asked Terran, sounding worried. “I remember the name, but I can’t remember her face… What did she have to do with that night?”

“It was all her fault… You said you didn’t understand what I did, but that you figured I didn’t have much of a choice. You were partially right. It was a choice for you between a life in pain or death by a curse…”

“What?” he said incredulously, looking shocked. “If it was up to me, I would have picked---”

“I know… But Illusia was still out there. You knew that she needed you. I couldn’t let you die and have everything fall out of balance. Anyway, at least curses can be broken… You had a chance to escape… I knew you could do it… That’s not saying it didn’t break my heart to see you like that…”

Terran’s eyes went wide; he opened his mouth to say something, but no sound came out. He tightened his grip on Illusia’s shoulders. Gently, she slipped one arm around him, returning his embrace. The anger was gone from her eyes as she looked directly at me.

“Koura,” she said softly. “What happened that night?”

“I’ll tell you… But you aren’t going to like it.”
