Chapter 3

Leave in the Dark

Kenna lay in a dark and very unpleasant cell. Next to her Kikeyo was starting to stir. Kenna hope she wouldn't wake just yet. It would be many days to the fire nation and she didn't what Kikeyo to stuffer through all of them. There was no light coming through the small slit in the wall that was there for air so Kenna knew it had only been a couple of hours, though it felt like days.
She knew she was in a lot of trouble. She would be killed in every scenario that went through her mind. The only real problem she had was with Kikeyo. She would be killed too, and Kenna knew it. Plus there was nothing she could do with her there, if she fought back Kikeyo would only die sooner. She was stuck, there was know way out that would leave them living. But then… she thought that last time too. And a boy came, he saved her. He got her out of there at the risk of his on life. If he was caught they would kill him to. Would he come for her this time? And what about Aang, Sokka, and Katara, would they come after her too? That was, it her only way out, for one of the two to come and save her. Surly Aang would come. He had to, he, Sokka, and Katara were her only friends. The more she thought about it she was sure that they would come. It made her feel more at ease.
There was a knock on the door that made Kenna jump. “Yes!” she snapped to the person on the other side of the door. The door shoot open, and there was a man behind. He was a small man that looked like he never bathed.
“Breakfast.” He said as he through some very stale bread at her. There were two small pieces; she remembered that this was the very meal she got when she was kidnapped before only there was one piece. She heard the door shut and shouted a very sarcastic “thanks!” then heard the man shout “whatever!” and she was sure he was gone.
As light started to shine through the small slit of a window she could see her cell a little better. There was nothing there. No cot, not camber pot, nothing. She put the two pieces of bread in front of Kikeyo. She wasn't hungry but she knew Kikeyo would be when she woke. Kenna would give Kikeyo her food for as long as she could. Kikeyo was younger then her, and she let her wouldn't suffer like she was willing to do.
“Kenna.” Said a week voice beside her.
“Yep.” Kenna smiled and tried to sound happy. She wasn't sure she had done succeeded though.
“I'm r-really sorry.” Kikeyo stuttered.
“This isn't your fault. I don't blame you. Remember, I like to think Zhao as a lot to do with it all.” She said with a small laugh.
“No. it is my fault.” She said stubbornly before closing her eyes and falling asleep. Kenna didn't wake. She wanted her to sleep for the whole `ship ride' but she knew that wouldn't happen. Kenna closed her eyes, but she really didn't want to sleep. Her life could soon end and she didn't want to spend her last days on earth sleeping. But she was soon sleeping.

Meanwhile Prince Zuko was going over his plan in his mind. He would fallow the army ship with one of his, just out of sight. Then when it was dark again, he would sneak out on one of his small boat so he won't be seen. Sneak in and slip down to the bottom level when the cells always were. Talk out the guards with as little noise as possible. And which ever cell door they were guarding was the door with the girls.
“Are you sure you want to do this, Prince Zuko?” ask the familiar voice of his uncle from right behind him.
“What do you mean? That girl is the key to the Avatar. Of course I'm sure!” snapped Zuko angrily.
“Well the girl said she would kill herself if harm came to the child.” Said Iroh calmly.
“I'm not going to hurt a little kid, Uncle, even more a little girl!” said Zuko shocked at what his uncle had just said.
“Oh no, I would never think you could do that!” Iroh quickly corrected. “What I was saying is, that girl, Kenna, she took no time in finding a small power over her captor. Something that no one could change.” Iroh finished with his eyes fixed on his nephew.
“How could she possibly think of a way to do that to me?” asked Zuko think briefly of way why she could find a small power over him.
“I don't know, but then I also wouldn't have though of killing myself before I'm scheduled to die.” Answered Iroh but it wasn't entirely true. Whether or not Prince Zuko was like other teenaged boys, it didn't change the fact that he was, and that Kenna was a girl with much charm, and she was only a year younger then the Prince. Kenna was an amazing person and it would only be time before Prince Zuko saw it. This was going to be a very interesting.

Aang and his friends were looking around for Kenna and Kikeyo. The came back to the house, it find the old man was standing at his store. The told them not to worry. Kenna was probably just talking Kikeyo out before she left, and went farther then she meant. They decided to wait till noon before they got worried.

Kenna was sitting in the still dark room. She had woken up because the guard outside began to fight. Kenna was listening to them go back and forth. It at least entertainment. But they soon stopped and left everything quiet. She slowly began to get bored. She wanted to ask one of them the time, but she would have to shout to be heard through the door, and Kikeyo was still sleeping. But be the light she thought it was at least past twelve. Maybe around four or five.
She was getting restless. Minuets were passing like days. “Well, this is the way to spend your last days.” She thought looking on the Brightside. By the time she got of the dumb ship it would be like she lived a nice long life. She began to think of things to do. But after she hummed all the song she knew at least five times, and retold very story she knew in her mind, and bitten of all her nails, she was out of ideas. But it was finally so dark in her cell that she couldn't see. And all she could her was the sound of Kikeyo breathing and her own stomach growling. Kikeyo had yet woken to eat the bread, but Kenna didn't touch it. She could handle starvation, Kikeyo could not.
She then her Kikeyo grunt and sit up. She was awake. Kenna sighed.
“Oh good you awake!” said Kenna in happy voice. It was hard to push the happy into what she said but she was at least confident that this time it sounded efficient.
“Yeah, I guess I am.” Said Kikeyo a little dazed.
“If you look there is some bread in front of you. It's not much but it's something.” Kenna knew that Kikeyo wouldn't eat the food if she knew that half wasn't really hers, so she wouldn't say anything.
“It's really dry. Is there any water?” asked Kikeyo after taking a big bit into on piece.
“Nope, well get water tomorrow. That is if thing haven't changed since the last time I was here.” She was really thirsty too, but she would try to give her water to Kikeyo as well, but that would be a lot harder.
“Oh.” there was real disappointment in her voice. It made something in Kenna hurt. How could they be so mean to a little girl? But she had nothing to say to comfort the disappointment; the truth was Kikeyo didn't even know the half of their problems.
“Kenna?” Kikeyo asked. Looking at were she thought Kenna face should be.
“Yes, Kikeyo.” Kenna was smiling but she was glad it was to dark to see because she knew it was far to fake.
“I'm we going to die?” it was right to the point and Kenna took a while to answer. She couldn't lie but she couldn't tell her yes.
“I won't let them hurt you in anyway. And hopefully Aang, Katara, and Sokka are on their way. I have no doubt that they will try to save us.” Said Kenna. She wasn't lying but it wasn't the truth either, the odd of them getting saved were low.
“Oh, okay.” Said Kikeyo there was no life in the way she said it, which worried Kenna. It made her want to say doesn't worry, but she couldn't tell her to do something she couldn't.
All of the sudden there was a loud thump outside the door. A second later someone knocked on their door. This really worried kenna. It wasn't time for a bathroom break or food, not yet. What was that noise? What was going on?
“Yes!” she said clearly after a while. She stood up and walked in front of Kikeyo, who also got up.
“You Kenna?” asked a voice that she had never heard before. At least it wasn't Zhao then.
“Who wants to know?” she asked back firmly.
Zuko recognized her voice as the girl from the beach. He began to unlock the door with the key he found on one of the guards who were lying unconscious on the floor.
As Kenna heard the door unlock the person behind it started to talk again.
“Is that girl in there?” he asked. Hoping that he wouldn't have to look around for her.
“Yeah, I'm here.” Said Kikeyo, as the door opened, bring light from lantern from the hall into the cell. There was a young man standing there. He had a bad scar on his eye that spread to his ear. He didn't look like the kind of person to mess with. But there was also someone behind him… Kikeyo could make out whom… but Kenna could.
Behind you!” she shouted, the boy turn just in time to see one of the guards had gotten up and was about to through a large knife at him. He easily dodged, but the knife went flying into Kennas' arm. If she had moved it would have gone right into kikeyos' head, and she wouldn't let that happen.
“Kenna!” screamed Kikeyo, knowing that Kenna had only let that happen because she didn't want the knife to hit her.
“It's okay, it's- it's only my arm. It's okay.” Kenna managed to say calmly.
“Kid, you can't scream! You'll wake somebody up.” The boy informed Kikeyo quickly. Then gave the standing guard a high kick to the head. The guard fell without another movement. “Are you sure you're okay?” he then asked Kenna.
I'm fine.” She said shortly.
“You're really pail.” He said looking at her then to the very deep cut.
“Kenna it's really bleeding!” Kikeyo could hardly look it. It looked really painful.
“Kenna?” she heard the boys words echo in her mind as she felt herself fall and saw every thing go black.
“Shit!” the boy went run to her. He picked Kenna up and put her over her shoulder. “Come one, kid. We got go now!” he grabbed her wrist and led to the deck.
“Can, you clime down the rope?” he said as he pointed to a rope the lead down the fight of the ship to a small boat. One end of the rope was tied to the ships railing and the other was tied to the boat, which helped keep the boat there.
“Yeah, I- I can.” Stuttered Kikeyo as she leaped over the railing and down the rope. He fallowed her down with Kenna over his shoulder. He cut the rope with his knife. They then made there way out of there.
Kikeyo was crying, as the boy lend over the motionless Kenna. The blood coming out of her arm wasn't stopping. The boy ripped a piece of cloth off his sleeve. He tied it tightly around her arm. Blood quickly seeped though it.
“Is she going to…?”Kikeyo started but could finish, it was to hard.
“She will be okay.” He said simply as he reached down a pulled out to paddles. “I got to get back to my ship. There's a healer on board, he can help her.” He started to row and the boat moved very quickly. And before long they were out of sight of the army ship, and right by another slightly smaller one. Once on board the man took Kenna to the healer and another man took Kikeyo to get some food.
The plan was for them to get her in better shape then have a man take her out on a boat and talk her home. The ship was anchored just out of sight of the land. Once the man had gotten her home and come back they would leave.

Aang, Katara, and Sokka set out on foot to search the woods to see if they could find them there. They were half a day away when Kikeyo showed up. But when they came back she told them everything, including who Kennas' captor was now (They told her that her cousin was now the prisoner of Prince Zuko so she could get the word to the Avatar).Know that they were on the right track the waited little time to go get her.

The two guards woke up they couldn't remember a thing. The told admiral Zhao that they were attack from behind, and when they woke up the girls were gone. Zhao was couldn't believe they had gotten out. He had his hole ship searched, but only found the rope. He had know idea Prince Zuko took them.
