Chapter 6
Full Moon
The Prince left when the healer came to rebandage kennas arm. She smiled at him differently then she did before. It was a weird thing to notice, but she was always smiling. Her smile was always different, it didn't bug him like his uncles did, and it was just there, but now it was… real.
“There all done.” said the same healer that had helped her before.
“Did you do it the first time?” Kenna could feel the difference. This was not done nearly as well. The first bandage was loose and the second was tighter. It was really uncomfortable.
“No, I believe Prince Zuko did.” He said after a while. He clearly didn't like her, but she didn't care.
“Really?” It wasn't a real question which was a good thing because he didn't answer, he just left. So Prince Zuko did a better job then the healer. That was really funny.
A little while later a servant came in with dinner. She sat eating it looking out the window. It was getting dark and soon she could see the moon. The servant left with Kennas empty plate and Kenna was alone. She sat looking out at the moon, it was a full. She remembered all the times she sat on top of that big hill in her old town, and watch the stares during the new moon with her mother. If the moon was full tonight then the new moon was tomorrow. She always felt very alone during the new moon. Kenna never slept when the moon what new either, she would just stare up at the stares. It was the new moon when she misted her mother the most.
Zuko was leaning ageist the ships railing looking at the moon. He wasn't thinking of anything particular, he was think, more then often drifting to Kenna then drifting away. This was his favorite time of day, there were know smelly men running back and forth, it was quit. This was the only time he could thing of nothing but everything. The moon moved slowly though the sky. Then the Prince went to bed. He dreamed of something that made him happy but when he woke the next day he'd forgotten it.
Kenna woke up about 10 minutes before the servant came. He briefly dusted wail she eat. Then when Kenna was done he left. She was staring out the window when there was a knock at the door; she knew how it was before the door open. It was Prince Zuko. She knew because his knock was more abrupt then the servants or Irohs. And they were the only ones who ever came to see her.
“How is your arm?” Zuko asked as he entered. Kenna also knew he would say that, when was he going to stop using that as an excuse to see her.
“it's getting better, but the healer who bandaged it this time didn't do as well a job as you did, I get the feeling he dislikes me.” She was smiling at the look in Prince Zukos face.
“How did you know that I did it the first time?” He asked her sitting down in the armchair.
“The healer told me.” Kenna shrugged. “So how is it that you did a better job then the healer?”
“Well, he does my cuts too, so I know that it feels weird if the bottom bandage is looser then the top.” Said Zuko shaking his head and rolling his eyes.
“That is just what he did.” Kenna laughed.
“Oh, I almost forgot. Uncle would like to have lunch with you again.” Prince Zuko looked at her waiting for an answer.
“Sure. Will you be there this time?” she had asked it before she could relies what she was say, but if Prince Zuko say thought it weird that she ask he hid it every well.
“I will try to be there, but the more I try to make it to lunch the more that comes up, so we'll see, okay.” Zuko was wondering why she asked but didn't say so, he was kind of hoping that it was because she wanted to see him.
“Okay.” She smiled at him.
“Well I have a lot of work to do so I'll see you later.” Zuko said as he got up.
“Alright then, bye.” Kenna turned in her arm chair and watched him leave. Then she returned to the window. Aang had made Zuko sound like an ugly, spoiled, and jerk but Kenna was having a hard time seeing it. What she says was a lost kid who really wants to be able to go home. And he really wasn't spoiled, he'd been banished! Kenna posed her thoughts at ugly, and then went on. He really isn't ugly at all, if anything he's really cute. That scare didn't hurt his looked all that much, in her opinion at least.
Several hours later there was a knock on the door, she knew it to be Prince Zukos. When the door opened he was stranding there with Iroh right behind him.
“Hello Kenna, I hope you're having a nice day.” Iroh smiled at her.
“Yes, sir, I am” she smiled back to him.
“Are you ready Kenna?” asked Prince Zuko looking at her.
“Yeah” she answered walking forward and nodding. Then the left for the same room Kenna and Iroh had eaten in yesterday. It looked the same only there were three tea cups and more sandwiches.
“I'm glade you could come today.” Kenna said to at Prince Zuko after they had all settled. Kenna was in between Iroh and Prince Zuko.
“Yeah it's so rare that I can have lunch, it's nice to get the break.” Prince Zuko smiled back. Irohs face feel without them seeing, his nephew never smiled, but hadn't he just smiled at Kenna. The girl must have the same charm at making people smile that her father had. It was nice to see Prince Zuko so happy.
Iroh just sat back and listened to the to kids talk. They were smiling and laughing, again something not very common of Prince Zuko. Soon everyone was full of tea and sandwiches, after taking Kenna back to the room Prince Zuko left to do work of some kind, but Iron staid to keep Kenna company.
“Tell me how you managed to get Prince Zuko to laugh like that?” asked Iroh cheerfully as he settled in an arm chair.
“Well I guess I just have a gift for it, but it was harder to get him to smile then anyone I've ever met!” Kenna said truthfully.
“Yes I'm afraid he works to hard. Never really has a chance to have fun.” Iroh was shaking his head.
“Well it's never to late to change.” Kenna smiled.
Iroh laughed, “no, I suppose it never is.” They then spoke of the village that they would soon stop at. But Iroh really couldn't stay long he to had work that needed done. But she did learn that they would get there late the next day, and they would get have just enough time to get what they needed.
She sat there alone for the rest of the day until there was a hard knock on the door and Prince Zuko came in with her dinner.
“Me and Uncle talked and he thought that you should be able to get some fresh air if you like it, and I agreed.” Prince Zuko had kennas full attention know and she was hanging to every word. But you can't go up when all the crew is up there so after you dinner when the sun goes down if to like I can talk you up there.” Prince Zuko was looking at her; he really wanted her to say yes. It was such a special place and time for him; he would be very disappointed if she didn't want to go. Plus it was a new moon so the stares would be beautiful then ever. There was nowhere for her to run off to so he wouldn't even bind her hands. He didn't see her saying no but he didn't get his hopes up that she would say yes.
“yeah, I'd like that.” She was barley able to talk she was so surprised. That was what she wanted, to look at the new moon with anyone but herself. So she quickly finished right when it got dark. Prince Zuko lead her up and she could hardly wait to breath the fresh air.
When see took the first step out she didn't feel how could it was but she feel the fresh air rush into her lungs it was nice. Prince Zuko led her to the railing where he always stands. She put her hand on the top bar and felt how cold it was, but she didn't move them. Prince Zuko was standing right behind her. Kenna looked up at the stares. It looked just like it did all those time she sat on the hill with her mother. Only it was colder. She tried to hold it in but she finally shivered. Kenna heard Prince Zuko walk a little closer to her.
“Are you cold?” Kenna heard him ask but she didn't turn around.
“Yeah, just a little.” She didn't figure she could lie and he'd believe her so she went with the truth. She felt him walk up so close that they were touching. Then she felt him put his arm around her. She had no idea what had just happened, but her heart was racing. She placed her hand on his arms and held him back.
“Better?” Zuko asked her calmly.
“Much.” She said just as calm but inside nether of them was calm.
Zuko didn't know what made him do that. He was so scared for a brief moment that she would push him away. His heart was betting so fast. Then when she rested her hands on him, to tell him it was okay, he could hear his heart. She prayed that she couldn't hear it to. Luckily it was muffled by the sound of her heart, which was going just as fast.
They stud there for so long that there hearts slowed to a normal past. They slowly started to relax. And Kenna started to feel his body heat warm her. They were comfortable… together. She wasn't feeling alone for the first time in nine years on a new moon. They were both so together and warm that they both didn't want to break abort but finally they both knew that they should be out there any longer. they didn't feel sleepy but they knew that they were.
“Do you think it's time to go in?” Prince Zuko finally asked, even though he didn't want to be the one to break them apart.
“Yeah, it's getting really late.” As Kenna said it she felt him let go of her and the cold set in.
“We can come back tomorrow.” Prince Zuko assured her, and she nodded. He walked her back to her room and the said good-night.
