San stood over the stove trying to stop the pans from smoking. San blew on the pans and one of them burst into flames. San yelped and jumped back from the stove and stomped her bare foot on the thick floor. Laughter came from the doorway and San spun around quickly. Kuto stood in the doorway leaning slightly against the frame of the door.

“Do you need some help here San?” Kuto asked with a bit of a grin. “Looks to me like you do. If I ever want charcoal then I know who to call.” Kuto laughed more and took an uneasy step into the kitchen.

“Kuto! I told you to stay put! You are never going to heal up all the way if you keep insisting on moving around!” San frowned and watched as Kuto hobbled to the stove. San shook her head and sighed.

“I told you I am a fighter and I can’t sit still for weeks on end. I am healing just fine and I can cook if I want to, and looking at these pans I think I need to.” Kuto took the flaming pan and placed it in the empty sink. Kuto took the remaining pan and placed it on the burning pan, smothering the flame out in
seconds. San shook her head at Kuto and he just laughed.

“All right, all right. What do you need?” Kuto listed what he required to make a decent meal and San pulled things from the cupboards, the pantry, and the refrigerator and placed them on the counter next to Kuto. Kuto smiled and pretty soon the entire kitchen smelled wonderful with the aroma of cooking food. San tried to sneak her hand into the pan to taste what Kuto was making but he smacked her hand away and laughed.

“You’re just as bad as a child San. Keep you hands out until it’s time to eat or there won’t be any to eat.” San made a face at Kuto and he laughed at her. San decided she had better things to do and wondered out of the kitchen. San walked in circles around the halls exploring all the rooms she had not yet explored.

San opened a door and found a second kitchen. San wondered at the dishes stacked haphazardly on the counters and overflowing from the sink. Recently the kitchen provided food for someone, but who? San shook these foolish thoughts from her head and left the second kitchen. San continued to explore the large base. San was again astonished at it's size. This place was twice the size of the base they had all been living at. To bad the council would not have listened to her if she had suggested moving the base here.

San saw movement ahead and was shocked out of her thoughts by what she saw. A child sat huddled against the wall, shaking but asleep. San moved slowly up the child and touched it. The child’s head wiped up suddenly and its eyes went wide with fear. San looked at the child and smiled. The child shook and looked up at San with a mix of distrust and fear. San smoothed the child’s long matted hair and was startled to feel no ears. San continued to brush the long brown matted hair away from the child’s face. The child started to whimper and shake violently.

“Hush hush, little one, it’s OK, no one is going to hurt you.” San said gently to the little child. San wondered how this little child could have gotten into the hold. “Are you all alone little-one?” San watched the child and wondered if the child understood. San sighed and very slowly picked up the child and stood up. The child gasped and twisted and turned “Shh shh shh. It’s OK little-one.” San hushed the child.

San walked down the halls holding the dirty child. The child was still and silent as San wound down the multiple halls until she found her way back into familiar territory. San walked into the noisy kitchen that smelled of food. “Do we have enough food to feed one more tonight Kuto?” Kuto laughed and asked if San was extra hungry tonight. Kuto continued to cook and did not turn to look at San. The food was sizzling as Kuto stared the food and answered San in the affirmative.

San took the child into the bathroom and tried to put it down. The child clinged to San with an iron grip. San sighed and turned the warm water on and tried again to pry the child off her neck. The child let go, scampered into a corner, and hid its face as if San would strike it. San moved slowly to the child and turned it around slowly.

“San.” San said as she pointed to herself. The child watched San point to her self and say her name again. San then pointed to the child. The child winced as if San would strike her. San sighed. The child looked confused at San. San pointed at herself again. “San” she said. The child hesitantly pointed to San and said her name once more.

San reached out to the child and removed the raggedy clothing off the child. San gasped at the protruding bones on the girl child’s body. The child seemed to be all skin and bones. San picked up the child and placed her into the warm bath water. The child smiled for the first time and her green eyes lit up with surprise. The girl-child lied back and submersed herself in the warm water for a moment. San smiled and reached up for the soap. The child sat up and San rubbed the soap into the child’s hair. San worked the shampoo into the child’s hair until it was so lathered that her hair all but disappeared under the thick layer of soap. The child lied back into the water and the dirt and grime fell away. The child sat back up and her hair was almost pure white.

San smiled at the child as she moved her hands around in the water making little waves. The child played with the water a little more until San reached up for the bar of soap. San moved a little to fast and startled the child. The child jumped and looked up at San. San smiled and slowly brought the soap to the child’s body and began to rub the child’s back. The child slowly relaxed again and yawned. San soon finished washing the child, sat down on the floor next to the tub, and watched the child as she gently splashed and moved the water around in the tub. The child looked like she was relaxing and San didn’t want to disrupt her fun.

San waited until the water was cold and the child looked ready to get out. San got up and got the towel from the closet. San went back to the tub and put the towel on her shoulder. The child looked up at San. San put her hands under the child’s arms and pulled her upright. The child stood in the water as San wrapped the large towel around the child. San then pulled the plug in the tub and picked the child up as the water ran down the tub. The child watched the water leave and waved it goodbye. San laughed and the child clung tighter to San’s neck.

San went into Ro’s room and saw Quip and Ro lying together on the bed. San smiled as Quip opened one eye and slowly raised his deformed left hand and motioned San to be quiet. San nodded and opened the drawers looking for something small enough to fit the child. Finally San found an old shirt of Ro’s that no longer fit around Ro and held it up against the child. The child was small enough for the shirt to be a dress, but it would do until Ro had time to sew her proper clothes. San went back to her own room and dressed the child. San sat the child down on her bed and began to comb out the rats-nest the child had for hair.

If the child felt any pain from the brushing, she did not acknowledge it at all. The child did not move or make any noises. San hummed a slow soothing melody as she worked through the matted hair. The child slowly began to sway with the melody and soon began to add words to the song. San stopped brushing and listened to the song the child sung. As soon as San stopped humming the melody, the child stopped singing. San began to hum again and the child picked up where she left off. The words of the song were unknown to San and seemed to be in a different language. San began to brush again and soon finished with the child’s hair. San was shocked at how long the child’s hair actually was. The child’s hair went down to the child’s knees and was pure white.

San continued to hum and the child turned to San and continued to sing. San smiled at the child and the child smiled back at San. On some unsaid agreement both of the girls stopped singing and laughed. The child’s laughter was like running water, pure and un-resistible. San pointed once more to herself and said her name.

“San.” The child said quietly. San smiled and nodded. The child pointed to San again. “San.” The child said a little louder. San smiled, nodded, and pointed to the child. “Tyia.” The child said quietly.

“Tyia.” San said pointing to the child. The child nodded. San smiled and hugged Tyia. Tyia looked at the door as it suddenly swung open to reveal Kuto stumble in holding two trays.

“Oh. I see. Who is this San?” Kuto said nodding towards Tyia as she clung to San’s neck. “Where did she come from?” Kuto put the trays down and looked closer at the child. “San! How could you? This child is one of them!” Kuto yelled at San.

“San.” Tyia said quietly as she slid around to hide from Kuto. San glared at Kuto for his yelling and for scarring Tyia after she had just gotten her to try to communicate. San was mad at Kuto for his outburst against such a small child.

“Kuto, Tyia is just a child and a very small one at that. You cannot honestly say you feel threatened by this little girl. She is starving, cold, hungry, and before I helped, was filthy. You cannot tell me that you would deny such a little creature food and warmth, and if you can then you are not the person I thought you were.” San glared at Kuto and tried to bring Tyia back around to the front. “It’s OK Tyia. Were not going to hurt you. Come over here and try this for me.” San picked up a spoonful of food and put it in front of Tyia’s face. Tyia ate the small bite of food but kept her eyes on Kuto the whole time. “Tyia only knows how to say my name in our language. I think she has been beaten and hurt. She needs to eat decent food and have a safe place. This is the safest place there is.” San looked Kuto dead in the eyes, daring him to object.

Kuto shook his head and looked at Tyia. Tyia appeared to be between three to five years old and looked like she had been abused and starved for most of her short life. Kuto sighed. “All right San. I will not object to her being here. Where did you find her?” Kuto shook his head as San explained.

“She is small enough she may have come in through a ventilation shaft. I don’t think there could be others. I will go search tomorrow after you are done hunting and we go out for plants.”

Kuto smiled at the child clinging to San as San patiently fed the child. Tyia eventually calmed down and sat down in San’s lap. Tyia did not ever let go of San’s neck. San ate between Tyia’s bites and soon the food was gone. The child leaned back against San’s chest and began to sing a slow and haunting tune. Kuto watched as the little child sung herself to sleep. San picked Tyia up, placed her in the bed and slowly pulled away from her. Tyia reached out for San. San picked a pillow up and placed it in the child’s arms. Tyia was silent as San covered her up, picked up the trays, and motioned Kuto to follow her out of the room.

“You will make a good mother someday San.” Kuto stated. Kuto smiled and kissed San on the cheek. San blushed slightly as she made her way to the kitchen. Kuto followed slightly behind. San dumped the dishes into the sink, smiled as Kuto came up behind her, and put his arms around San’s waist. “Would you like me to do the dishes?” Kuto said laughing.

“That’s OK Kuto, I can do them.” San said laughing. San reached up and hit the button above the sink. A cover came down over the sink. In a few minutes the cover would come back open and reveal the dishes spotless and ready to be put away in the cupboards where they would be dried. “And I’m not ready to be a mother any time soon mister.” San said with a laugh as she hugged Kuto. Kuto put on his best sad face but couldn’t hold it for long when San started laughing at him. San kissed Kuto and ducked out of his grasp. San stuck her tongue out at Kuto as she walked out the door.

“That’s not fair San!” Kuto laughed as he tried to follow her. San jumped out from behind a corner and yelled ‘boo’ making Kuto nearly jump out of his skin. “That was not cool San!” Kuto exclaimed. San turned and walked to Ro’s door and motioned Kuto to be quiet. Kuto nodded and followed her into Ro’s room. Ro was lying in Quip’s arms and both were sleeping. San smiled at Kuto and Kuto tried to contain a bit of laughter. San tiptoed back to the door and watched it close quietly behind Kuto. Kuto hugged San and smiled widely. San walked back to her room holding Kuto’s hand.

“They seem comfortable enough don’t they?” Kuto smiled at San as she nodded in agreement. San opened the door to her room and saw the child sleeping peacefully on her bed. San smiled and Kuto rubbed her shoulders gently. San lied next to Tyia and Kuto sat down next to San and continued to massage her shoulders until she fell into a deep slumber. Kuto then lied down next to San and held her close to him.

This is all I need.” Kuto whispered into the dark. “They can just leave and never return. I would be happy. I have finally found happiness. San is so wonderful. She doesn’t even care that I was born below her and there is no one to keep us apart or object. I can finally be happy. Maybe one day we can have our own family. She is so good with children. I bet she helped raise Ro. Ro is such a good and compassionate girl. I hope San and I can have a child that sweet and kind.” Kuto sighed and drifted off into a peaceful slumber.
