San sat upon her bed with Tyia playing a simple clap game. Tyia kept adding increasingly difficult claps until her clapping perfectly intertwined with San’s simple clapping. Tyia was all smiles and giggles as the two sat playing and enjoying themselves. The door slid open and Ro came running in. Tyia jumped and clung to San’s neck and watched distrustfully as Ro frowned and began to write hurriedly in her notebook.

“Why does she not like me? I have never done anything to her. Oh, San guess what! Kuto and Quip came back pulling two deer each! They are going to cut them up and get the meat in the freezing box and we will have food enough for the winter.” San smiled at Ro’s innocence and amazement.

“Four deer will last us maybe two months at the most, and that is dependent on whether or not it is still just the five of us around here. We need to get at least enough to last everyone here two years so that if more survivors come we will not starve during the long freeze. There are plenty of plants around and you and I will need to go gathering tonight. I will bring my gun in case we run into a deer or something worse.” San watched as Ro’s emotions changed from excited to disappoint to understanding to worry. Ro nodded, got up, and left the room.

San shook her head and smoothed Tyia’s hair. Tyia looked up at San and smiled slowly. San got up, picked Tyia up, and put her on her hip. San walked out of the room and into the hall. Kuto rounded the corner and nearly ran into San and Tyia. San jumped back and Kuto did the same. Kuto and San laughed and hugged. Tyia looked at Kuto and smiled.

“Hey, look, she’s not afraid of me anymore.” Kuto said happily. San smiled and hugged Kuto again. Kuto held his arms out to Tyia and she looked at San unsure. San smiled and nodded at the small child. Tyia reached out with one arm and quickly hugged Kuto, never letting go of San. Tyia pointed to Kuto. Kuto was unsure of what she was doing and was quiet.

“Tyia.” Tyia said as she pointed to herself. Tyia then pointed to San. “San” Tyia pointed again to Kuto.

“Kuto.” The man said as he glanced at San who nodded. Kuto watched Tyia think about it a moment. “Kuto.” He said again. Kuto pointed to San. “San.” Then he pointed to Tyia. “Tyia.” Kuto smiled as she giggled.

“Kuto.” The white-haired girl said as she pointed to Kuto. “San, Kuto, Tyia!” The child exclaimed. San laughed and smiled.

“So how many deer did you get. Ro ran in all excited about the amount of food we had. She exaggerates so I thought I would come and see myself.” San explained to Kuto as they walked towards the kitchen. San walked into the kitchen and saw seven deer lying on the counters.

“Well, Ro only saw the first load. So, even if she exaggerated, there are many deer for us. I had some trouble carrying this much weight so we had to make many trips. This should last about three months at the least. We still need to get more because we don’t know how many people will end up being here. We have gained two people in the last week. We need enough for about ten people to be on the safe side.” San smiled and kissed Kuto’s cheek for he had made her feel much better about their situation.
