Ro was sorting through large piles of clothing she had gathered from the closets around the hold. Ro sorted the clothing into six piles. One pile for herself, one for Kuto, one for San, one for Quip, one for Tyia, and one that wouldn’t fit any of them. The door slid open and Tyia came in hesitantly.

“Ro, no Tyia?” Tyia asked shyly. Tyia didn’t seem to understand that Ro could not speak and thought she was mad at her for not talking. Ro motioned with her hand for Tyia to come to her. Tyia came closer, her dolly dragging in her left hand. Tyia came close to Ro, and Ro hugged the child. Tyia smiled and giggled as Ro blew raspberries in Tyia’s neck.

Ro held up a silky blue dress that had little flowers all around the fluffy bottom seam. Tyia looked down at the dress and giggled. The dress had small shiny glitter roses embroidered throughout it. The neckline was of lace. Tyia tried on the dress and was delighted to find that it fit. Tyia spun around and giggled as the dress flared out around her little legs. Tyia ran out of the room to find and show San. Tyia ran down the halls and into the kitchen.

San was just finishing sorting the roots when Tyia ran in. “San! Tyia!” Tyia yelled with excitement. San turned to Tyia and smiled at the young child’s exuberance. Kuto hopped off the counter he had been sitting on next to San and spun the child around. “Kuto!” Tyia said gleefully.

“Kuto spins Tyia.” Kuto informed the child. Tyia giggled and spun some more.

“Tyia spins!” Tyia exclaimed. Tyia laughed and spun again. Tyia got dizzy and fell to the floor and looked up at Kuto expectantly. “Tyia spins, Tyia.” The child motioned how she fell down onto the ground and looked up at Kuto.

“You fell down.” San watched as pulled her hands up to cover her face, her doll swinging wildly. Tyia giggled loudly.

“No, Tyia fell down!” Tyia corrected San with a mock tone of anger. Kuto laughed at Tyia’s misunderstanding. San shook her head and went back to sorting the remaining roots. Tyia waved to Kuto and went to find Quip.

“She is smart and is learning fast. You do well with children San.” Kuto hopped up onto the counter next to San and helped her wash the roots when she had finished. There were three piles of roots, one was red, one was orange, and the third was white. San washed the roots and placed them into the freezing unit.

Tyia ran around the hold but could not locate Quip. The pale child eventually gave up and went back to Ro’s room to see if there were any more treasurers hidden in the piles of clothing. The door opened and Ro smiled at Tyia as she came into the room. Tyia came into the room and sat quietly next to Ro. Ro smiled and continued to sort the clothing.

Tyia sat quietly, combing the hair out of her dolly’s face. The dolly had small felt ears sticking haphazardly out of the hair. Tyia pulled the ears straight and combed the hair around them. Tyia’s gaze moved from the dolly to Ro and back again. Tyia reached up, felt her own head, and was confused to feel no ears protruding from her scalp.

“Ro, Neata,” Tyia struggled for the words. Tyia gave up and pointed to the ears on Neata’s head and to Ro’s own. Tyia then pointed to her own head and frowned. Tyia watched as Ro struggled for a way to explain. Ro pointed to her ears and then moved aside Tyia’s hair to show her the ears on the side of her head. Tyia was still perplexed, but she let it be until she could speak better.
