Sayonara, Chapter 4
Hikaru was busy in the kitchen. It took him a fairly long time to figure out where Kaii kept everything but once he figured it all out, he was all set. The sweet aroma of his cooking filled the entire apartment; Hikaru only hoped that Kaii would like it and wouldn't mind the smell.
Hikaru sat and waited while his food was cooking, he didn't leave the room just in case something happened. But while he was there, he thought about many things. The first thing that came to his mind was his mother; the one who taught him how to cook and the woman he got all his calm and graceful qualities from. The woman was a saint, well, not literally but her kindness and patience were saint-like. Her patience while teaching Hikaru how to cook was astonishing; Hikaru was extremely clumsy as a child.
He sighed to himself, thinking of his mother always made him sad. His parents had died in a fire at work - both of them had a job in the same place, it was how they met - while he and his older brother, Yuki, were at school. Hikaru didn't get along with his father just like his brother didn't get along with their mother. Yuki had inherited their father's temper and lack of patience so the fact that his mother was the way she was annoyed him in the same way his traits bothered Hikaru. The only really weird part was that Hikaru always got along with his brother, sure, they fought just like all siblings do, but the rest of the time things were fine between them. Hikaru didn't see much of his brother anymore, they drifted apart after their parents' death and once Yuki went off to school he lost contact and hadn't spoken to him in eight years.
In addition to that, Hikaru also had a younger sister. No one knew what happened to her though; she just seemed to vanish after the death of their parents. Hikaru soon realized that it became the other part of the reason why his older brother was so different after the deaths. They looked for her, but Hikaru was too young at the time to remember if they had found her or not; regardless of the results, she never returned home. Yuki and Hikaru lived with their father's brother and his wife whom they knew quite well and were very fond of. They remained in their care until the day Yuki left for school and the few years later when Hikaru followed.
Hikaru wrinkled his nose as a strange odor wafted into the room; he quickly came to his senses and realized it was the food. He rushed to the oven and took out the food and then turned it off; it was pure luck that the food wasn't ruined.
Just as Hikaru was finishing up with the food and readying the table, he heard the key in the front door and smiled; Kaii was home from work finally.

Kaii walked to his apartment door, dead tired. He hadn't done much work but the insistent nagging of his co-workers regarding the lateness after his break tired him out. It seemed that just as he got one to leave, another came in; but he was proud of himself for remaining firm and not offering any clue as to why he was late.
As he unlocked his door and walked inside, an appealing aroma filled his nostrils and he took a deep breath, smiling softly to himself. He shut the door, making sure to lock it behind him and took of his shoes, tossing his keys on a tiny wooden shelf built into the wall on his way up the step and into the kitchen.
He was quite surprised when he reached the kitchen, Hikaru hadn't done anything extravagant with the table set up, but the food looked absolutely delicious - especially after the junk he had been eating for the last while.
"Hikaru...this looks delicious," Kaii said, looking at Hikaru who blushed modestly.
"Thank you, Kaii, I thought you could use something other than junk food to eat," Hikaru said, smiling as he finished setting up the food. Kaii looked at the table noticed that Hikaru had only set one place.
"You're missing a place," Kaii said. Hikaru looked at him, a bit of surprise on his features.
"I...I wasn't sure if you wanted my company during dinner and thought it would have been presumptuous of me to set two places," Hikaru said quietly. Kaii smiled and walked over to him, hugging him and giving him a quick kiss on the top of his head.
"Don't always be so negative, Hikaru, I wouldn't have told you to stay if I didn't want you to," Kaii told him. He released him and got another plate out and set it on the table to prove his point and the proceeded to take out everything else he would need; Hikaru blushed nervously the whole time.
"Sit," Kaii said firmly once he was done setting up. Hikaru did as he was told and sat down immediately.
"...Thank you for letting me stay, Kaii," Hikaru said gratefully, gracing Kaii with a small smile.
"I want you to, now eat," he said, pointing to his plate as he gathered some of the food for himself. There was rice, chicken and a salad; enough for two people so Hikaru must have had some hope that Kaii would let him stay - he smirked inwardly at the thought.
Hikaru put a small portion of his food, much like he had done at lunch only this time he wasn't tired and actually ate instead of picking at it. Kaii, however, frowned when he saw how much Hikaru had put on his plate.
"You can eat more than that you know," he half-scolded. Hikaru looked at him, not expecting him to say something like that since eating this much was normal for him.
"Oh...no it's not that, Kaii, I'm just not a big eater," Hikaru clarified. Kaii raised an eyebrow at him, but didn't press the matter and continued to eat. Hikaru now felt uncomfortable though, worried about what Kaii was thinking and hoping that he didn't have a bad opinion of him; it wasn't that Hikaru starved himself to stay thin, but he never really ate much. As a child he always ate less than most people mostly because of his frame and if he ate more he felt sick and had to lie down after he ate.
During his teenage years the other students had often teased him and accused him of being an anorexic and then said that only girls did that; which of course wasn't true. To make matters worse, since they believed that only girls were anorexic, they started teasing him about his more feminine frame and started calling him a girl. Hikaru really hoped that it wasn't going to come up again; after the teasing he had eaten so much in hopes to change the way he looked so that they wouldn't tease him that he had made himself sick. It was a very unpleasant time.
"Is something wrong, Hikaru?" Kaii asked, noticing Hikaru's silence and that he had stopped eating and seemed to just be staring at his food.
"Hm?" Hikaru asked, coming out of his daze. "Oh...no, nothing's wrong, I was just daydreaming," Hikaru said and resumed eating.
"If you say so," Kaii said.

The rest of dinner when smoothly after that, a few words were exchanged here and there but mostly they just enjoyed the silent company of each other's presence.
After dinner, they did the dishes and went into the living room to sit on the couch in front of the TV. Hikaru took his earlier position at Kaii's side with the older man's arm wrapped around him and it wasn't long before he began to feel sleep catch up on him and he fell asleep. Kaii noticed and chuckled quietly, kissing his forehead and then turning back to watch the news on the TV.
When Kaii too began to feel sleepy, he turned off the TV and gently got up, lifting Hikaru into his arms and carrying him to the bedroom, frowning at how light he felt and deciding to ask Hikaru about that later.
He laid Hikaru on the bed and since he didn't have any clothes with him, he left him the way he was and got himself changed before crawling under the covers with him and pulling him close, letting sleep take over.

Where am I? Hikaru thought to himself, opening his eyes slowly. He was warm, the bed was soft and the sun was shining on his face. All these feelings were unfamiliar to him since his windows were always covered and he had yet to buy a new mattress. He turned over and saw Kaii's sleeping form next to him. Hikaru smiled, remembering that he had fallen asleep on the couch. Kaii looked very peaceful when he slept that Hikaru felt bad for having to wake him up, but he had already stayed long enough and didn't want Kaii to wake up and just find him gone. He shook Kaii gently and giggled when Kaii frowned and batted his hand away in his sleep.
"Kaii, you need to wake up," Hikaru said gently. Kaii slowly opened his eyes, blinking a few times until finally focusing on Hikaru.
"'Morning," Kaii said, yawning half way through. "What are you doing awake so early? It's a weekend and you're on vacation," Kaii pointed out. Hikaru smiled at him and sat up, stretching.
"I need to get going, I've got a few things I need to do to get ready for work when I go back," Hikaru said.
"Oh, I see," Kaii mumbled. He too got up, sitting at the edge of his bed and pulling on some clothes. "I should drive you to your car then," Kaii said, getting up and heading out of the room and into the kitchen to get some coffee.
"No, it's all right, Kaii, I can just call a cab," Hikaru said, following him into the kitchen.
"It's no trouble and I already told you I would, plus I might as well seeing as how I'm up," Kaii said, getting a mug out of the cupboard.
"I'm sorry for waking you, Kaii, I just wanted to make sure that I didn't leave without telling you," Hikaru said. Kaii continued to get his coffee.
"Look, Hikaru, I don't know what's wrong but I'm going to drive you to your car no matter what. Why do you keep telling me not to?" Kaii asked, pouring his coffee and leaning against the counter.
"It's nothing...I just don't want to trouble you," Hikaru said quietly.
"Liar. Try again," Kaii said, taking another sip of his coffee.
"It's just that...well, I feel as though I'm intruding, I fell asleep on you last night without meaning to when I should have gone home," Hikaru said truthfully.
"Hn," Kaii grunted, "that sounds more truthful to me even if it is bullshit," Kaii said.
"But I was telling the truth!" Hikaru said, exasperated.
"That's not what I'm talking about," Kaii said calmly. "The part about you overstaying your welcome is bullshit," Kaii said.
"Oh...I see," Hikaru blushed, having embarrassed himself. Kaii smirked and finished off his coffee. He set the cup in the sink and walked over to Hikaru who seemed very interested in his feet.
"Don't be embarrassed, Hikaru," Kaii said softly. He lifted Hikaru's chin and kissed him softly. Hikaru closed his eyes in response and wrapped his arms around Kaii's neck.
After a few moments they parted and Hikaru rested his head on Kaii's chest.
"You're comfy...," Hikaru said, quite content as he snuggled up to him. Kaii's chuckle vibrated his chest making Hikaru smile.
"I don't want you to leave yet, Hikaru. Stay with me," Kaii said. Hikaru didn't have to think long about the answer; he nodded with little hesitation.
"I'll stay with you, Kaii."

Hikaru's vacation passed swiftly, the whole time he never stepped inside his own home; Kaii wouldn't let him. He even went and got Hikaru some clothes so he could stay.
However, it wasn't long before Hikaru had to go back to his apartment and back to work. Both men hated it but knew that there wasn't anything they could do to stop it. Luckily, they both knew where the other lived now so finding each other again wouldn't be difficult.
"Hikaru! Welcome back!" One of Hikaru's co-workers greeted him happily. She was a nice young woman, the same age as Hikaru and had yet to lose her enthusiasm towards her profession; she was Hikaru's assistant for that very reason.
"Thank you, Yasu," Hikaru said, smiling warmly at her. Yasu had bright red hair that ended just above her shoulders and was layered giving it almost a wispy look; she held it nicely since her hair wasn't especially thick and was more on the thin side. Both her hair and her bright blue eyes went along with her cheery disposition and on days when he felt gloomy, Hikaru was glad to have her nearby.
"Are you feeling better? The boss said you weren't doing too well," Yasu said, her nearly motherly concern easily over powering her cheerfulness.
"Yes, thank you, I'm feeling much better now. So, what have you been up to without me?" Hikaru asked.
"Well, since the fall/winter deadline is coming up, we were working on some of your sketches you left behind and trying some different colour schemes to go with them. We were having a hard time deciding so it's good that you came back when you did," Yasu said, quickly bringing out her folder and opening it to show Hikaru.
"Hm," Hikaru said, taking a quick glance. "I think we should spend some more time on them, something doesn't seem right, let's go to my office," Hikaru said, walking with Yasu to his office in the corner of the building. It was a large skyscraper and Hikaru's office was on one of the top floors. His office was the largest of the entire floor with two walls made just of windows so he could look out at the city around him. The floor, desks and pretty much every available surface were covered with his sketches, fabrics and colour templates making the office very messy but Hikaru still knew where everything was.
"What do you think is missing?" Yasu asked, barely glancing at the messy office, already being used to it.
"Well," Hikaru began, tossing his coat onto a chair and walking over to his desk, which was like a table/easel type thing that could be tilted at different angles for sketching and working. "For starters, do you really think that you'd want to wear something blue when it's below zero outside?" Hikaru inquired, opening up the folder and setting it on the desk, taking a seat on his stool.
"Why not?" Yasu asked, walking over and standing next to him.
"Well, because if you recall, blue is a cold colour and when it's cold out, you don't want to be reminded of it every time you look at your clothes. Plus, cold colours can be gloomy and depressing, you want something that's warm and uplifting," Hikaru explained. Yasu thought for a few moments then agreed.
"So what colours did you have in mind? Someone put a brown scheme in there I think," Yasu said, pointing to the sketches. Hikaru shook his head.
"No, warmer than that - hot even. Let me show you," Hikaru took out his coloured pencils and one of the unaltered sketches and quickly coloured it in. Yasu's eyes widened.
"That's perfect! I see what you mean!" She said excitedly. "What made you put red and orange together?" Hikaru smiled softly to himself.
"Just something I saw somewhere."
[End Chapter 4]
A/N - I hope you liked it, I tried to give a little more information on Hikaru's family too...oh and if you can't remember far enough back to realize where Hikaru got the colours from it's because Kaii has red hair and orange eyes.
