Sayonara, Chapter 2

Sometime around midnight - Kaii wasn't sure of the exact time as he was too tired to look at his clock - there was a small knock on the door to his room. Ignoring it, he pulled the covers up and tried to go back to sleep as the knocking continued. It kept getting louder until it stopped all together.

After a few minutes, Kaii fell asleep. Only seconds after, the door was opened quietly and someone walked in, shutting the door then heading over to where Kaii was asleep. They stood there for a few moments until Kaii sensed someone was in the room. He slowly opened his eyes and looked up.

"Hikaru? What are you doing here?" Kaii asked in surprise. Hikaru smiled nervously and maybe even a bit sadly as he shifted from foot to foot, staring at the floor.

"I needed to see you...tomorrow's the last day and I couldn't bear not seeing you one last time. Would you...mind if I stayed here tonight?" He asked, Kaii wasn't sure if it was because he was really tired or because he felt the same, but he let Hikaru stay. He pulled back the covers and allowed for Hikaru to climb in next to him. Kaii's intentions had been to just sleep beside him, but Hikaru obviously wasn't thinking the same way.

Hikaru climbed into bed and pulled himself up to Kaii's level and kissed him softly, eyes closed and pouring all his emotion into one soft show of affection. Kaii reacted by wrapping his arms around the smaller man and pulled him close, kissing him back just as softly and gently opening his mouth to deepen the kiss.

A few moments passed before Hikaru pulled away, his lips only centimeters from Kaii's and they could both feel the other's breath on their lips.

"Make love to me?" Hikaru asked timidly. Kaii didn't respond, he simply kissed Hikaru again and rolled them over so that Kaii was over top of him. Then, ever so slowly so as to savour the rest of their time together, they made love well into the morning.

The cruise had ended; Kaii and Hikaru's time together was no more. Kaii had been right; the goodbye had been difficult, but mostly for Hikaru. He was in love with Kaii and so he had given him his virginity; for them to be separate, just wasn't right to him.

"Kaii, please! Don't just shut me out like this..." Hikaru pleaded softly as he stood in front of Kaii. Kaii was leaning against the railing on the boat with his head turned to the side so that he wasn't looking at Hikaru. Kaii had been silent all morning, not wanting to speak in case he got too upset. "Please Kaii...how could you be so cruel...? I thought you..." Hikaru's voice had gone quiet, barely a whisper as tears formed in his eyes and he turned away from Kaii. "I can't believe you would do this...I thought you'd at least say goodbye, I never thought you'd ignore me. Did I...do something wrong?" He sounded like a wounded child and it immediately made Kaii guilty that he'd hurt him. He turned Hikaru around and looked him in the eye.

"You haven't done anything wrong. You are the most wonderful person I've met but..." Kaii trailed off.

"What do you mean? Why 'but'?" Hikaru asked quietly.

"But it won't work. We'll never see each other again and it would be too painful." Kaii said softly. The look of hurt on Hikaru's face was evident before he masked it with understanding.

"I guess you're right. So...it's goodbye then." He leaned up and kissed Kaii quickly before turning and heading back to his room, tears trickling from his eyes as he hurried away from Kaii.

Months had passed and Kaii was working hard as ever. His boss started telling him that he was working too hard and Kaii simply laughed at him. In comparison to everyone else, he did work hard.

Kaii's job was as an editor for the city's newspaper and he was constantly at his desk reading. Fixing, typing; people often wondered if he ever slept. He grinned at them and continued working; he worked hard because he loved his job.

But now he had another reason.

Since the cruise, Kaii couldn't get his mind off Hikaru unless he was working. He buried himself in work and rarely went home and when he did, most of his time was still spent working. He rarely slept and when he did, it wasn't well. Eventually he only went home to sleep and took sleeping pills in order to get proper rest so he wouldn't be a mess the next day at work.

As for Hikaru, his condition was similar only much more obvious in his work. He worked for a major fashion company and lately his styles had been all gloomy. They still came out fabulous but many were monochromatic and depressing. He was only twenty-one and the emotional damage would take a long time to heal. Eventually, people began changing the colours because they needed something new. They asked Hikaru's opinion and he answered truthfully as the colour didn't bother him. The reason he had no colour was because he wasn't able to think of ones that went well together unless they were put in front of him.

"Hikaru, can I speak to you please?" His boss said one day. She approached him in his office area and led him down the hall to her head office. She gestured for him to sit down, and then sat behind her desk.

"What do you want to speak to me about?" Hikaru asked.

"Well..." She began. "Have you been feeling okay? I mean, ever since you came back from that cruise, you seem to be upset. It's showing in your work." She said calmly. Hikaru nodded in agreement that it was showing up. "I think you should take some more time off to sort out your feelings. We need something new for the new season and it has to have colour. Your colleagues have almost exhausted all their talent for colour and you're the only one left who can come up with something new. You think it would help?" She asked hopefully. Hikaru nodded and stood up from his chair.

"I'm sorry about all the trouble." He said. His boss shook her head and waved him off.

"Go on, enjoy your vacation and don't worry about me." She smiled and Hikaru smiled back; barely. He walked out of her office and headed down the building to his car. He didn't bother going back to his office, there was nothing he needed.

He was on his way home when his stomach growled and he realized that he hadn't eaten yet. He drove up to the mall as it was closest and walked inside. The mall was fairly big but he knew where anything worth was and quickly made his way to the food court to get something to eat.

"Kaii, aren't you hungry?" One of his acquaintances asked him. It was about lunch time and Kaii realized that he had been working for quite a few hours with no food. He smiled at the man and thanked him.

"Yeah thanks, I wasn't aware of the time." Kaii said and he left the building to go find somewhere to eat.

Hikaru found something to eat rather quickly and sat down. He wasn't big on eating as you could tell by how skinny he was, so he simply got some rice and a soda.

He ate slowly. He was hungry, but for some reason he just couldn't come up with the energy to put any of the food in his mouth. He refused to waste it so he picked at it, every once in a while putting some of it in his mouth and taking a sip of his drink. He sighed sadly, he didn't like being alone anymore because now he was left to his thoughts with nothing to distract him. The thoughts were always the same - they were all flashbacks from the end of his final night on the cruise with Kaii. Down to every last detail.

Hikaru cuddled up to Kaii's side. He was tired and exhausted, both he and Kaii had a thin layer of sweat covering their bodies and were breathing heavily.

"Kaii...thank you." Hikaru said quietly. Kaii smiled and held him close, kissing the top of his head.

"Anything for you." He replied.

"...I love you, Kaii." Hikaru said, closing his eyes, he was asleep before anything else was said.

That was what bother Hikaru most about that cruise. He never found out - and never would now that they were apart - if Kaii loved him in return and that, more than anything else, hurt him deeply.

As he was finishing his food, he caught a glimpse of someone that looked familiar. Shaking his head and blaming it on his imagination, Hikaru finished his food and drink and tossed out the garbage. He turned around and before he could take two steps, he bumped into someone's chest. Now, Hikaru wasn't very tall so it could have been a number of people, but something about this person was familiar.

"Sorry." Hikaru mumbled. He was startled at the voice that spoke next.

"It's all right." He said. Hikaru snapped his head up.

"Kaii?" He asked in disbelief. The person looked down at him; orange eyes, red hair... "Kaii!" Hikaru smiled and hugged Kaii. Holding back his tears. "I don't believe it."

"Hikaru?" Kaii asked, prying Hikaru off him for a moment to look at him. He smiled softly when he recognized him. "It is you." He pulled Hikaru close, holding him tightly as he buried his face in Hikaru's silky hair.

They stayed like that for a few moments, both relishing in the other's presence.

"What are you doing here? I thought you had to work." Kaii said calmly, hoping Hikaru didn't think he wasn't glad to see him.

"My boss told me I needed time off to get my life sorted out." Hikaru said carefully. He didn't want Kaii to think he was a total mess.

"So you have another vacation then." Kaii said, a statement rather than a question. Hikaru simply nodded and hugged him tighter. Kaii chuckled and pulled him off.

"Let's go somewhere else, this isn't really the place to be doing this." Kaii said. Hikaru blushed and nodded, Kaii led him out and to his own car.

"I'll drive you back later so you can get yours." Kaii said, knowing Hikaru would be worried about his car.

"Okay. Where are we going?" Hikaru asked.

"My apartment."
