Fan Fiction ❯ The Four Lords ❯ A Glimmer of Hope ( Chapter 36 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Brittany held onto Alex’s arm as the mirror’s glowing intensified. Brittany was beginning to wonder what was taking so long when suddenly the glow stopped at the images of the other three Lord’s could be seen in their own mirrors. Brittany felt Alex tense as the disgusted looks of the Lord’s fell upon him. Celine’s hate filled eyes turned on Brittany, and even though Brittany knew that she was safe she couldn’t help but shiver at the malice that resonated around Celine. Zanatos’s penetrating eyes were even worse as they gazed upon Alex with contempt.
“Why is it that you have summoned us?” Zanatos asked haughtily. “Was it not enough that you attacked another demon Lord? I’m surprised to see that you’re still alive after all the damage you had received. Your little stunt at the barrier will not go unpunished.”
“Spare me the preaching Zanatos you know I don’t give a damn.” Alex said sharply causing Zanatos’s eyes to glow with rage.
“Your mouth will be the death of you Kane.” Gigas boasted. He leaned forward on his desk and glared at Alex and then turned his attention towards Brittany. “I still can’t believe you went out of your way to save that hoar. She must be pretty good in bed for you to do all that for her.”
Brittany felt her cheeks flush crimson at Giga’s comment, giving Gigas to laugh harder. Brittany was about to make a comment as her anger got the better of her. Right as Brittany opened her mouth to speak she was stunned to hear Alex beat her to it.
“If I were you Giga I’d watch my tongue before someone rips it out.” Alex said coldly. Gigas was about to reply but Alex cut him off. “Luckily however I am not you, because if I was I’d probably kill myself. As a matter of fact, she is good in bed, but I can assure you that was the very least reason I saved her. I happen to love her, an emotion I’m sure none of you has ever felt before.”
Alex’s words stunned the Lord’s as they eyes widened with shock. Even Brittany was shocked by Alex’s words. Did he really just say what I think he said? I know that Alex loves me, but I wasn’t expecting him to blurt it out to the people he hates more than anything else in this world. It’s almost as if when he confided with me about his past, he regained some of his former pride. Now that I know his secret he can act around me how he truly wants to. He doesn’t have to keep everything to himself and pretend to be someone he isn’t. Evidently the other Lord’s don’t know how to deal with Alex’s sudden confidence boost either. Brittany thought as she tried to suppress a giggle at the Lord’s shocked faces. Celine was the first one to speak, given strength by her anger towards both Brittany and Alex.
“What makes you think you have the right to talk to us like you do? You are weakling compared to us. An insignificant creature that needs to be destroyed.” Celine vented. Alex smirked at the comment as his voice became cold and dark.
“You already tried to destroy me once, remember Celine? It didn’t work, I survived. Regardless of wether or not you remember, I sure as hell haven’t forgotten. Evidently one of you wants me dead so bad that you’ll send someone to try and finish me off in my own home.” Alex responded.
“What the hell are you talking about?” Zanatos questioned. “If we wanted you dead so badly we wouldn’t have someone else do it, we’d finish you off ourselves.”
“Yeah, I already know that,” Alex quipped. He then looked at Brittany and smirked. “ and so does she. So there’s no need for formalities. What I’m trying to get at is the fact that I was attacked by someone that was able to get inside my castle and out using magic. Someone with incredible power otherwise I wouldn’t have been able to sense it where I was. The only person I know with that much power and the ability to use magic is you Zanatos.” Zanatos’s furrowed his eyebrows as he glared at Alex.
“I can’t believe someone like you would tell that wench anything.” Zanatos started. “Evidently you must either be going crazy, or you think this girl might can help you. Either way it is of little importance to me. However, the fact remains that I did not attack you this evening, nor did I send anyone to attack. I’m sure you made up this little attack just like you did the incident involving the wraiths.”
“You’re disproving the existence of wraiths rather quickly aren’t you Zanatos?” Alex asked with a knowing look in his eyes. Zanatos hesitated for a moment as he studied Alex’s face before answering.
“What exactly are you implying Kane?” Zanatos asked sound irritated. “You’re wasting my precious time with your ill-fated rambling. So unless you have something important to discuss besides your phantom attackers and imaginary wraiths I’d suggest....”
“I’d suggest you take a look at what I found in Medea after it was destroyed by your so called ‘imaginary wraiths’.” Alex interrupted. Zanatos stopped as he looked incredulously at Alex. Celine however was the first to speak.
“Do you believe us to be fools? Medea has a barrier around it created by the archmage himself. There’s no way, even if the wraiths really do still exists, that they’d be able to get through there.” Celine snapped. Brittany noticed that Alex’s smirk grew larger as he confidently gazed at Zanatos. When Brittany looked at Zanatos she realized why Alex seemed so confident in his accusation. Zanatos had paled slightly and his confident gaze was shattered as he looked at Alex with wonder, and possibly even a hint of fear. When Brittany looked back at Celine, Celine was staring directly at her with nothing but contempt. It was then Brittany’s turn to show that she was no longer afraid of them.
“Alex is right.” Brittany announced causing Alex’s grin to become even larger as he practically beamed with pride. “Medea was destroyed by wraiths. Several clerics were killed, the city is in ruins. There is enough evidence to make us believe that either someone with more power than Alcadan was able to destroy the barrier, or someone knew the spell to gain entry into the barrier.”
“Well by your own words it would be very easy to believe that Kane there opened the barrier. Seeing as how he managed to open the barrier around the sacred forest.” Gigas mentioned. Brittany shook her head as she continued.
“There’s no way. Alex was with me when all this happened. If you don’t believe my words you can easily ask Celine there. I believe she remembers the incident rather well. This happened around the time Alex and Kiba rescued me from you.” Brittany said her voice crisp with ice. Celine’s face turned bright red from anger causing Brittany’s lips to take on a self satisfied smile.
“Still there is no proof that Medea is actually destroyed. We aren’t simply going to take your word on it. Even if it was destroyed there’s no proof that wraiths did it.” Zanatos said suddenly, trying to bring an end to the conversation.
“I think you might find this interesting Zanatos. You’d never believe what I found while I was searching the ruins of Medea. Maybe you’ll recognize it.” Alex said as he held out the medallion he had found to where the Lord’s could see it. The recognition was obvious as all their faces darkened at Alex’s new revelation. “So what do you have to say for yourself now?”
“We will discuss this matter at a later time.” Zanatos stated, regaining his lost composure. “Given that what you’ve shown us is in fact the real thing, then I have no other choice but to consider that you might be telling the truth.”
“Gee, you sound almost upset that I might be right.” Alex chastised. “The worst part is, is that I almost wish you were right Zanatos. I’d much rather have these wraiths be nothing more than my imagination then find out that one of the Lord’s has resurrected them and is now controlling them for their own personal gain.”
“Just because I am giving you a chance to prove yourself, that doesn’t change anything between us. Much less gives you the right to question the integrity of myself or the other Lords.” Zanatos replied coldly.
“Zanatos don’t think you’re really fooling anyone.” Alex said his eyes and voice once again becoming cold as he stared daggers at Zanatos. “I know that you are behind this, there’s no changing that fact. Mark my words, I will make you pay for the sins you have committed. Lord knows I’ve already payed for all of mine.” Zanatos didn’t even respond as his light faded. Soon followed by Gigas’s and Celine’s as the room grew silent as Alex became absorbed by his thoughts. Alex sighed softly as his body relaxed and he looked at Brittany with weary eyes. “It’s been a long day. I’m not sure if I’ll be up for a party this evening after all.”
“Hey, don’t worry about everything okay.” Brittany said softly as she pulled Alex’s hand and led him to the couch as she sat down and let him lay his head on her lap. “You once told me that there was no use in worrying about the future. That it would come on its own accord and there was no point in worrying what was yet to come. Just for the night at least, pretend as if nothing is wrong and have some fun. Please, do it for me.”
Alex smiled as he gazed up at her. His eyes shining with love as he gave in to Brittany’s request. “Just for the night. There’s a lot of work ahead. A lot of preparation for the times to come. But...I will set those thoughts aside for the night and focus solely on you.”
Brittany blushed lightly as she bent over and kissed Alex passionately on the lips. “I love you Alex, and I will always stand by your side. Nothing will ever change that.” Brittany’s lips curved into a devious smile as she bent lower and whispered into his ear. “If you come down, and actually enjoy yourself for tonight. Then I’ll make sure to reward you later.”
Alex’s ears perked up as his eyes focused on Brittany, his lips turning into a wondrous smile. “For you, I would give the world.”
“I don’t want the world Alex, I only want you.” Brittany replied softly as he leaned up and kissed her again. Their kiss was momentarily interrupted by a knock as Holly called to them.
“My Lord you wanted me to help Brittany get a dress for this evening’s party. It will be starting shortly and you know how long it takes a female to get ready. So if you don’t mind hurrying up whatever you two are doing in there, I need to help her soon.” Holly teased. Alex grimaced as he shook his head and reluctantly sat up allowing Brittany to run to the door and open it. Holly gazed at Brittany with questioning eyes as Brittany turned back to Alex.
“You might want to get ready yourself.” Brittany said with a mischievous twinkle in her eyes. “Remember, no fun, no deal.” With that Brittany closed the door on a wide eyed Alex.
Alex quickly got up and exited his study. Brittany and Holly were gone to another room to prepare Brittany for the evening leaving Alex free run of the bedroom. He quickly stripped and took a long awaited bath before drying off and picking out the suit he was going to wear for the evening. He chose a long black coat with a split in the end that went down to the back of his thighs. He also chose a black vest, black pants, and a white long sleeve shirt with a collar the reached over the collar of the jacket. Alex tugged at his collar as he looked at himself in the mirror before tying his hair up in a ponytail. I hate dressing up. These clothes are always uncomfortable to wear, much less to actually have any fun in. However, I’m sure that tonight I won’t complain as long as a certain young lady keeps her promise. Alex thought as a lustful smile crept upon his lips as he exited his room and headed towards Holly’s room.
* * * * * * * *
Brittany held her breath in anticipation as Holly finished zipping up the back of her dress. Holly had taken out a solid black, strapless dress, that complimented all of Brittany’s features. It wasn’t much different from a dress Brittany might’ve worn at a formal dance back in the human realm. She wasn’t quite sure why she was so nervous and excited. It was just something about the way her and Alex had been acting ever since he had opened up to her and revealed the secrets of his past to her. Evidently she was not the only who had noticed for Holly soon commented on it, snapping Brittany out her thoughts.
“I notice that you and the Lord seem to be a lot closer after everything that’s happened.” Holly commented as she finished zipping Brittany up and sat down on her bed.
“Yeah. It’s great! I feel so much more...I don’t know...comfortable around him. It’s weird, but great at the same time.” Brittany said excitedly. Holly laughed at Brittany’s enthusiasm as she continued.
“I take it whatever the Lord had to speak to you about must’ve been very important to affect you both in such a short amount of time.” Holly asked as she studied Brittany intently.
“It was, but I’m so glad he did. I wasn’t really expecting what he told me. It came as a real shock, but then again after being here as long as I have I should be prepared for just about anything by now. Still, I’m glad he trust me enough, and cares about me enough to tel me.” Brittany said with a soft smile as her lips curved into a small smile. It was then that Brittany realized what Holly was getting at when she saw the look of disappointment on Holly’s face. “Oh Holly, I’m sorry, but I can’t tell you what he said. I mean, I really wish I could because I could seriously use some advice right now. Still, I can’t betray Alex’s trust. He told me not to tell anyone, and if you only knew what he told me you’d realize why I can’t tell you. I’m really sorry Holly.”
Holly waved her hands as she forced a smile. “No it’s okay I understand. It’s none of my business anyways.”
“No Holly, it’s not that. I really do want to tell you.” Brittany said as she bit her lower lip trying to decide what she should do. How was Alex able to keep this all to himself for so long? I really could use Holly’s help, and I don’t want her to think that I don’t trust her. Still, I couldn’t do that to Alex. I love him, and if I were to tell someone it would crush him.
“I’m sorry, I really am. I can’t betray Alex’s trust. I trust you Holly, you’re like my big sister, but I can’t break a promise I made to Alex. He’s my mate and my lover, my responsibility lies to him above all else.” Brittany said softly as she gave an apologetic smile to Holly. Holly nodded as she gazed at Brittany with understanding.
“The Lord really couldn’t have chose a better person than you for his mate.” Holly said with deep sincerity. Brittany nearly cried at the remark as she hugged Holly quickly just as there was a soft rap at Holly’s door.
“May I come in?” Alex asked from the other side of the door. Holly quickly shoved Brittany into the back part of the room as she ran to the door and opened it.
“Your lady awaits you my Lord.” Holly said with a deep bow and wide grin at Alex’s confused look. As soon as he stepped into the room Brittany walked out from the shadows allowing Alex to see her. Alex’s jaw almost hit the floor as he stared at her in awe. Brittany blushed under his intense gaze as she stopped walking and looked towards the ground. Holly shook her head in despair as she looked at the couple.
“My Lord, what have I told you about that jaw of yours.” Holly teased. “She’s not going to break if you touch her. Although I’m sure you’re thinking about doing much more than just touching her at the moment, I’d suggest you start off by escorting her to the ball room.” Alex quickly straightened up as he regained his composure and walked towards Brittany and wrapped his arms around her and kissed her passionately on the lips. Brittany was positively beaming as Alex took her arm and escorted her out of Holly’s room and towards the ball room. Alex stopped in front of the door as he turned to face Brittany. In the darkness of the hallway Brittany’s skin seemed to emit an ethereal light that took Alex’s breath away.
“Are you okay Alex?” Brittany asked noticing the strange look on his face.
“I’m...better than ever.” Alex smiled. “But to be completely honest I feel about as nervous as you look. I’ve never been particularly good at parties.” Brittany giggled lightly more out of nervousness than anything as Alex wrapped his arm around her waist and whispered into her ear.
“You’re beautiful. Don’t worry, just have fun.” Alex whispered. “Shall we?” Brittany nodded and Alex opened up the door as the sounds of cheering echoed through the enormous room.
