Brittany looked back at the hole in shock as she brought her hands over her lips. “No, it can’t be.”

“We were hoping that the children might have made it away. We thought that maybe they were just scattered and didn’t know where to return to.” Alex said, not paying attention to Brittany’s words. “Now it’s become apparent that those were but foolish dreams.”

“Shouldn’t we tell Simera and the others?” Brittany asked hesitantly. Alex looked up at her and shook his head.

“Not now. I’ll tell her when we return.” Alex solemnly replied. He looked at the wide hold in the earth and shook his head. Brittany stood up, her knee’s trembling as she walked over towards the hole. Within a few feet of the hole she could make out the awful smell of something rotting. The thought that it was innocent children made Brittany almost throw up. Brittany jumped slightly as she felt Alex’s hand across the small of her back as he pulled her into his chest and away from the hole.

“Alex, how could anyone be so heartless?” Brittany asked as she too began to cry. “They were children! They were no threat to him!” Alex sighed deeply in response to Brittany’s outburst. He knew she was right, but this was the demon realm. People ,innocent or not, died every day. Alex had killed his fair share of innocents in his life. There was once a time when these death’s wouldn’t have affected Alex at all. A time when he might’ve actually laughed at what happened, but that seemed as if it was in another life now. Right now, he was pissed.

Alex released Brittany and gently wiped the tears from her eyes as he walked over to the stone platform which he had previously been sitting on. Before Brittany could question him about what he was doing Alex stabbed both his hands into the stone platform. With a yell that was mix of pain and anger Alex lifted the large platform off of the ground and into the air. Brittany stood opened mouth in awe as Alex effortlessly slammed the platform onto the ground covering up the hole. Dust swirled around him and Brittany from the force of the platform hitting the ground. Alex’s loose hair blew in the wind as he turned his head to look back at Brittany. “Their blood shall not be spilt without retribution. I’ve been waiting and planning for far too long. If I hadn’t been so cautious I could’ve prevented this. Zanatos might not want another war, but by damned he sure as hell just started one.” Alex pledged. Brittany walked over to him and held onto his arm, he pulled her into his embrace as he kissed the top of her forehead. “I could never forgive myself if anything happened to you. For that reason, and to avenge the souls that Zanatos has killed, I will finish what has been started.”

“Alex no matter what you do or what happens, I shall always remain by your side.” Brittany promised. Alex smiled at her words and kissed her on the lips sending a tingling sensation all throughout her body.

“I don’t deserve you.” Alex whispered. He then looked towards the horizon at the setting sun. “We won’t be able to continue work, at least not today. I’ll ask Simera what she wants us to do.”

Alex saw the look of surprise in Brittany’s face as she looked up at him. “You mean you’re still going to rebuild Celeste?”

“Yes, no matter how badly I want to rip Zanatos limb from limb, I can’t wage a war against him now.” Alex answered. “Not only are my troops less than his, but he has the aid of the other Lord’s whenever he wishes. Events are in place that cannot be stopped, I won’t deny that. There will be another great war wether we want it or not. I fear if that if my plan doesn’t succeed, then this land shall fall into complete darkness.”

“Alex, don’t worry.” Brittany said reassuringly as held his face in her hands, gazing into his eyes. “I have faith in you. Everyone here does. Your not alone like last time. This time you have friends. Friends that will help you, friends that will stand by you always.”

“As long as you are by my side, that is all I need.” Alex said as he smiled at Brittany. “I’ll say this, it’s hard to remain angry when I’m around you.” Brittany giggled at the statement as looked up at him.

“I have that affect on people.” Brittany teased. There was a moment of silence as they gazed back at the tomb. Their morbid thoughts were broken as Kiba, Shadow, Holly, and Rylus walked up to them.

“My Lord, what do you want to do?” Rylus asked impatiently. Shadow nearly throttled Rylus at his outburst, while Holly looked at Brittany to see if everything was okay. Brittany nodded softly causing Alex to turn and face them. All of them could tell there was something different in Alex’s eyes. It was as if a long dormant flame had once again been rekindled. Kiba was the only one to smile as he gazed into his Lord’s eyes. Kiba kneeled before Alex and bowed humbly. Without knowing what it was for, Holly, Shadow, and Rylus followed in suite. Brittany held onto Alex’s arm looking confused, but when she too saw the look in Alex’s eyes she lost herself in his piercing gaze.

I see now why so many followed under his command so long ago. His eyes seem to be able to penetrate anything. Ever part of him seems to command attention and respect. Even now, covered in dust and grime, it’s easy to tell that he’s a demon lord. It seems as if Alex has come out of a long sleep, but now I think I’m beginning to see the true Alex. Brittany thought in amazement. Kiba lifted his head starting at Alex with a smirk that showed his fangs.

“It’s good to have you back my Lord.” Kiba said. Even Kiba, Brittany noticed, seemed younger and more dignified even though he was kneeling before Alex. “I take it that you’ve finally come to your decision.”

Holly, Shadow, and Rylus raised their heads to gaze at Alex, waiting for his words. Alex seemed not hear Kiba at first, but it was soon apparent that he was just gathering his thoughts. Alex nodded slowly as he looked down at Kiba.

“Rise, Lord of the wolf demons.” Alex commanded. Everyone exchanged glances of surprise at Alex’s change of tone. Only Brittany and Kiba weren’t affected as Kiba stood up quickly. “It is time for you to once again take your rightful title and take charge of your clan. A war is coming, and I cannot ensure your safety. It is only fair that I not drag you into this unwillingly.”

“My Lord....” Kiba began. Alex cut him off with an icy glare.

“No, I’m tired of you calling me your Lord Kiba.” Alex said, it seemed to everyone that a great weight had been lifted off of Alex’s shoulders as he spoke. “For far too long I have sat by and watched as this realm was slowly consumed by the darkness that has taken the hearts of everyone that lives here. I have sat by, plotting and planning, trying to figure out a way to take back this land. I was blinded by my own personal vendetta’s and motives, I never truly saw what was happening. The death’s of these children has opened up my eyes, and what I see is a world that has forgotten the joy and life it once had. I know that I cannot possibly do anything by myself, but I am not going to force those that do not wish to fight, to serve me. I wasn’t fit to be your Lord Kiba. I never was, but now I hope that I may finally become a Lord that the people will want.”

“My Lord you can’t.” Kiba began again, but Alex glared at causing Kiba to shut his mouth quickly. Kiba shook his head and smirked as he looked at Alex. “Alex...I swore my life to you as did every member of my clan. We would gladly fight and die for you. Not because we are bound by that oath, but because of who you are and what you are fighting for. So don’t think that you’re going to get rid of us now that things are starting to liven back up around here. I know personally, I’ve been waiting for this for a long time and I couldn’t think of anyone better to lead us.”

Brittany could see the pride swell up in Alex after hearing Kiba’s words. Holly, Shadow, and Rylus stood up as they too nodded and agreed with Kiba.

“We’ve served you this long and we plan to see this through to the end.” Rylus said with a smile.

“You’ve changed so much since we first met you, I can barely believe you’re the same Lord.” Shadow said as his gaze softened and he smiled. “I’ll stick around because I want to see what kind of person you turn out to be when the final piece falls into place. Right now, I believe you will truly be a great Lord.”

“I can’t leave this poor girl alone to put up with you.” Holly said as Shadow wrapped his arm around her. “She’s got to have someone to tell your stubborn ass what to do.”

“You see Alex, they really do care about you.” Brittany said as she tilted her head to the side and looked up at him. “You’re a great leader and everyone believes in you.”

“I’m glad.” Alex said softly as a smile played upon his lips. “Still, we can’t just up and start a war. There are numerous things that must be done in preparation. First, before anything we do, we’re going to finish what we have already begun. I cannot in good conscious leave those children as they are. Tonight we shall ask the clerics what they want us to do. Once we are finished, then the preparations shall truly begin.” Alex paused as everyone nodded in agreement with his decision.

“Now Kiba, I want you to take command of the wolf demon’s once again. However, I do ask that if you don’t mind until we are ready act as if everything is the same as it always has been.” Alex said. Kiba nodded.
“Of course my Lord. As you command.” Kiba said cheerfully. An amazing transformation occurred within everyone, all because of Alex. It was plain to see that the spark that ignited Alex’s passion and anger had slowly built into a raging fire that gave life to all those around him.

“Now, let’s get everyone to head back home. There’s a lot that needs to be done. First of all, there’s a certain Lord of the north that I need to talk to you.” Alex said with disgust. “He’s dirtied his hands with too much innocent blood. Creating wraiths is something only a being as powerful him could create, at least with Alcadan and Scion out of the picture. In a way, I’m glad that Alcadan has passed on, otherwise I might suspect him of this. But there’s no possible way Alcadan would ever do something so treacherous.” The silence of everyone’s thoughts was interrupted by an unlikely source.

“Zanatos’s quest for power and supreme rule has caused everyone within the borders of this realm pain. He has used the weakness of their hearts and their emotions to his advantage, ruling with fear and power. Maybe I can see it more clearly since I haven’t been her as long as you have, but I see what he’s done to everyone. Despite this he hasn’t broken your wills, in fact he’s just made them stronger.” Brittany said seriously, but smiling. “Even I’ve been affected in my time here. I can only begin to imagine all the pain you’ve been though.” Brittany paused as she looked at Alex and squeezed his hand with a knowing look in her eyes before continuing. “I don’t think he’s realized that all he’s done to you has only made you stronger. I honestly believe that we can win, and that we can bring peace to this land. Especially if you’re the one who’s leading us.”

Despite the solemn and morbid mood everyone laughed as Alex’s face flushed slightly at Brittany’s words. He quickly composed himself as the laughter ceased and he scanned everyone’s eyes and then looked back at the rest of the wolf demons who were standing not too far away listening intently to what was taking place. When Alex’s gaze fell over them everyone kneeled to the ground in homage to their Lord. Kiba chuckled softly as he motioned towards everyone. “I told you my Lord we serve you not because of our oath, but because we want to. We are yours to command my Lord.”

“Let’s go home. We have a lot to do.” Alex commanded. Everyone stood up and cheered as Kiba took charge and got them in order. Alex look at Brittany and pulled her close to him.

“Do you really think that everything will work out okay?” Brittany asked timidly. Despite her previous bravery she had never experienced the true horrors of war.

“Only time will tell.” Alex whispered as he looked in the direction of Zanatos’s realm. “Only time will tell.”
