Fan Fiction ❯ The Four Lords ❯ Quest For Power ( Chapter 42 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
After everyone arrived back at the castle Simera and the clerics were surprised to see everyone’s change of mood. Everyone was deeply upset by the news of Alex’s discovery, but they decided that they wanted Alex to continue what he was doing and to rebuild Celeste bigger and better than ever in honor of the children. Alex thought it was a fine idea, and even though he wanted to continue talking to Simera about everything he excused himself to try and contact Zanatos. Alex wasn’t surprised by the fact that none of the other Lord’s responded to his summons. Alex sat back in his chair thinking about everything when Brittany walked in.

“Judging by the look on your face I take it no one answered.” Brittany said as she walked over to him. Alex scooted his chair back from his desk and motioned for Brittany to sit in his lap. As soon as she did she wrapped her arms around him and kissed him as he began talking.

“No, but I didn’t expect that they would. After my last call I’m pretty sure they cut of all ties with me.” Alex said, stopping to kiss Brittany again. “Now, before I forget there’s something I want to go over with you.”

Brittany looked at him with question as Alex urged her to get up. When he stood he headed towards his bookshelf and said the special word to open up the door that revealed Alcadan’s spell book. Alex took the spell book and set it on his desk and opened up to a page in it. “Do you remember that spell that you used against me before the mages came? The one I told you never to use again?”

“Yes of course I do.” Brittany said, shuddering at the thought of what might’ve been.

“Well I never got a chance to teach you the sister spell to that one.” Alex continued. “The barrier I erected to keep the wraiths away from the castle is the sister spell to that one. It’s said the exact same way you just use different hand gestures.”

“Okay, but why does the barrier only keep the wraiths out?” Brittany asked, leaning closer so that she could look at the spell book.

“Because, this spell is designed to only be effective on wraiths. It was created by Alcadan as an ultimatum to the wraith problem. This was before he created a spell to turn them flesh and blood. The first form is offensive and will kill or injure only wraiths but at a cost of the user’s life. The second form is defensive creating a barrier to keep them out, but severely drains your magic power.” Alex explained. Brittany looked up at him and he could already guess what she was about to say.

“If it only hurts the wraiths, then why were you hurt when I used the spell?” Brittany inquired.

“I’m not sure exactly. That remains a mystery to me too. It might be because of what happened to me. It might’ve made me weak to a spell that destroys the dead, there’s no telling.” Alex said softly. “Regardless, I wanted you to know this in case you ever had to use it.”

“Do you know the spell that turns the wraiths to flesh and blood?” Brittany asked quickly as Alex started to close the book. Alex stopped and looked at her, shaking his head softly.

“No, I have searched this entire book, trying and see if maybe Alcadan left a clue to what the spell was. Unfortunately, I’ve yet to find anything. I barely remember the spell myself even though I was there when he cast it. If only I could remember it, or find out its secret in Alcadan’s spell book, then maybe we’d stand fighting chance.” Brittany placed her hand on top of Alex’s and kissed him passionately.

“Let’s take everything one step at a time okay. What all do we need to get done before we can begin to worry about Zanatos?” Brittany asked sweetly. Alex lost his train of thought for a moment as he stared into her eyes. When he finally realized she had asked a question he quickly replied.

“Well first, we need to gain as much help as we can. The clerics will help us, but they’re not good on the battlefield. They will however be excellent in healing. I’ve gained Rire’s trust, but they are small in number, so they won’t be too much help unless by some miracle I can free the rest of the elves. The mages are a completely different story. Even though there are few of them compared to the might of Zanatos’s army, they are probably his strongest weapons. Though I highly doubt that Magnus would switch sides and try to help us, it’s worth a shot.” Alex said thoughtfully. He tried to think of more reasons but his gaze continued to linger upon Brittany. Brittany smiled coyly as Alex’s lust filled eyes fell upon her. She leaned up and kissed him on the lips as she whispered.

“Tomorrow we can plan, tonight let’s just enjoy our time together.” Brittany whispered as she grabbed Alex’s hand and led him towards their bedroom. Alex, despite himself, couldn’t help but grin sheepishly as Brittany led him to the bed and in a matter of seconds stripped off all her clothes. Alex stripped too, finishing just as Brittany jumped into his arms. Alex twirled her around and landed on the bed kissing her and moving his hands all over her.

“Tomorrow I will worry, tonight time stops just for you and me.” Alex whispered. Brittany lovingly gazed up at him and smiled.

“Since when can you control time?” She teased softly.

“From the moment you agreed to be mine.” Alex replied. Whatever Brittany’s response was it turned into a moan of pleasure as Alex inserted himself into her.

For several weeks Alex kept his promise and continued the restoration project on Celeste. Every day until dusk they would work moving stones, setting up pillars, carrying molds. By the time they returned home they were covered in dirt and dust, but smiling at the thought of being one step closer to being done. No one could deny the change of feeling in the atmosphere, nor could anyone deny how close Alex and Brittany had become. As soon as everyone returned home the Lord and lady were inseparable.

Aurora was the one who brought up the question of wether the couple took separate baths. The silence and blushes from both of them caused a roar of laughter as Aurora’s speculations came to light. Everyone was truly happy and confident about what they believed would soon be taking place. Still, the tension in air was thick enough that you couldn’t help but feel it all around you.

After several hard weeks of work the finishing touches on Celeste were being finished. Everyone was working diligently as Alex and Brittany walked through the beautiful stone walkways and beneath the stone arch’s taking in the scenery. They had almost walked around the entire city when Rylus came running towards them.

“My Lord, one of the demons has fallen. I believe it’s heat stroke. Is it okay if I take him back to the castle. I’m afraid we don’t have the necessary things to take care of it here.” Rylus panted. Alex thought briefly before nodding and giving his consent.

“Go ahead, but hurry back. The clerics will need help moving their belongings from the castle.” Alex commented. Rylus nodded gratefully as he hurried back in the direction that he came. “I can’t believe we are finally through.”

“It’s beautiful. I’m sure the clerics will love it.” Brittany said. She snuggled her head against Alex’s chest as they walked towards the pond. They both sat down as a comfortable silence passed over them. They were blissfully content in each other’s arms until Alex’s ear perked up at the sound of marching feet. Alex’s sense detected the danger long before he could see it causing him to stand up quickly.

“Brittany run to Kiba and tell him to get the troops back to the castle.” Alex ordered. Brittany didn’t hesitate, sensing the urgency she hurried along the pathways to deliver Alex’s message to Kiba. Alex ran across the plains until he perched himself on top of a hill so he could over look everything. Alex looking back, make out the faint forms of his army hurrying back to the castle to prepare for whatever threat was coming. Whatever Alex was expecting, this was not it. He made out three forms coming out of the forest, each one holding a banner. The first one was a dark blue banner with a silver half moon and silver stars. It was the flag of Cecilia, Lord of the west. The second flag was dark green with a minotaur on the front brandishing an axe in his hand. It was the flag of the Lord of the east. The final flag was blood red and had a black dragon embedded on it.

“Zanatos...” Alex cursed. His mind raced for why all three of them would come now of all times. When the truth finally hit him it was as if death himself had grabbed hold of Alex’s heart. “Brittany...no!”

Author's Note: Next chapter you should find out who the spy is, unless I decide to write a lot more ; ). Which in that case you'll have to wait for the chapter after that. I will give you warning that I'm going to try and extend this as long as I can because I wanted a good 70 pages in between each story plot. So far I've managed that with the first two, so I'll try and continue it with the third. Sorry for the short chapter but I didn't want to leave you hanging thinking that Britany's broken promise wouldn't come back to haunt her, or that Alex would start the war so soon. I'm not going to be that nice. Certain things need to take place, and just like in any real war there needs to be quite some preparation just in case. Thanks again for all your support. Bye!
