Fan Fiction ❯ The Four Lords ❯ The Necklace ( Chapter 49 )

Alex made his way to the treasure room and soon found himself standing before a very large wooden chest laden with bronze restraints. Alex kneeled before it and gingerly undid the restraints and lifted up the heavy lid. Alex peered inside and extracted two items and stared at the two precious items items he was holding.
"I didn't expect to find you here. Especially looking at that." a voice called out from behind him. Alex turned around to see Holly standing behind him smiling softly. Alex nodded and looked back at the two items in his hand. "If you don't mind me asking, I know what the first one is for even though I thought it was just a fairy tale, evidently I was wrong, but what about the second one. If I remember correctly I saw a picture of it in one of the history books. Isn't that the ring the Archmage gave to the original demon Lord?"
"Yes, this ring was bestowed upon the original demon Lord towards the end of the great war. It was created by Alcadan and gifted with certain magical properties. It can disperse barriers, deflect spells, and numerous other things." Alex said softly. "When I first returned to this realm you told me that you had been attacked. This ring was what the perpetrators were after. You know about Ryza don't you?"
"Yes, he's the one who sold out all the elves to the Lord of the north."
"Well he was also the one who was behind the attack on the castle. His target was this ring. I sensed the ring's presence as soon as I arrived so that's how I knew it was him. Needless to say he got what he had coming." Alex grasped the ring tightly and pocketed it as he stood. "I'm going to take it with me to the mage's realm just in case I have to use it. I'm hoping however that things won't come to that."
"So am I." Holly replied honestly. "Don't forget that Brittany know's the astral projection spell, so if you need help don't hesitate to use it."
"I know, but we'll be fine."
"My Lord, I know it is none of my business, but do you intend to give her the other item?"
Alex opened his mouth to speak, but closed it as he thought for another moment. "This has very special meaning to me therefore it should go to someone who is very special to me. In time, I am sure that this will belong to her. Until then I want to keep it safe."
"You really love her don't you?"
"Don't be ridiculous how could you ask such a question?"
"Don't play innocent with me! We both know what that is. You know what it means if you give it to and she accepts it." Holly replied. She then giggled lightly as she looked back at Alex. "Better yet why don't I tell her what it does."
"I believe there have been enough secrets shared between you two for now." Alex responded, silencing Holly. "Still...do you think she'd accept it if she knew what it meant?"
"Well I wouldn't suggest giving it to her without telling her first. Still, you won't know until you try."
"True, I'll hold on to it for now. Goodnight Holly, Brittany is waiting for me and I'm about to pass out as it is." Alex said as he gave her a weak smile before leaving.
Holly shook her head sadly as he left. "He's such an idiot." Of course she'd accept it. She loves you, and you love her. Why does love have to be so complicated when it is truly so simple? You'd better give that to her. She deserves it. Actually, both of you deserve it.

When Alex returned to their bedroom it was already dark and Alex could hear the soft sounds of Brittany's breathing. Good she's already asleep. I'll just put these into my pack and then change for bed.
As soon as Alex finished his tasks he quietly slipped into bed next to Brittany. Brittany awoke slightly and pulled herself closer to him as he wrapped his arm around her and kissed her.
"I'm sorry I didn't wait up for. I was just so tired." Brittany said sleepily.
"It's okay. I know you need your sleep." Alex replied softly.
"Still I wanted to be with you."
"Shh, go to sleep Brittany. I'll still be here when you wake up in the morning."
"But what about you, aren't you the least bit tired?"
"Heh, I've got too much on my mind to be tired. Just let me hold you a little longer and I'll be fine." Brittany didn't argue with Alex as she snuggled up closer to him, resting her head on his chest. Her breathing fell into a rhythmic pattern as she listened to his heartbeat. Alex ran his fingers softly through her hair smiling in the darkness content knowing that she was there beside him.

At the end of the second day Alex and Brittany were packed and ready to go in preparation for the next day. Alex had insisted that they go by foot instead of using a teleportation spell to get there. "I'd rather catch them by surprise. They can sense when powerful magic is being used. It will be a day's journey so we'll have to leave early in the morning."
"In that case you better not keep me up tonight." Brittany teased even though she was nervous about the next day. Alex could sense her nervousness as he wrapped his arms around her and kiss her softly.
"Let's go downstairs and see what's for dinner okay." Alex suggested. His eyes took on a mischievous look as he continued. "That way I'm not tempted to do anything that might keep you awake."
Brittany shook her head and shot Alex an exasperated look. A small smile crept onto her lips as she backed away from him. "You make it sound like being downstairs with everyone would stop you, but I know you better than that mister." Before Brittany could continue her stomach growled loudly causing her to blush.
"I'll take that as a yes." Alex replied with a laugh. Brittany smiled sheepishly and nodded. "So shall we?"
"Wait let me change into one of those dresses." Brittany said as she quickly took off her top and opened the closet door containing all the dresses that Alex had made for her.
"You know you don't have to wear those anymore. That's the reason I had all these other clothes made for you like you had in the human realm." Alex told her. "It would be impractical to wear one of those in a battle."
"I know and I'm grateful not to have to wear those tight dresses all the time. Still, I don't mind wearing them once in awhile. Besides you said that after tomorrow things might never be the same again. So let's make tonight special."
Alex sighed and smiled as he walked up next to her and kissed her softly. She pulled out a dress and laid it on the bed. She then looked over at Alex who was leaning against the wall smiling at her with amusement. Brittany then walked over to Alex's closet and opened it up. She pulled out some of Alex's clothes and looked at him expectantly.
"I guess this means I have to dress up to." Alex sighed.
"Now you're catching on." Brittany laughed. "Good boy."
The evening was indeed special as Alex and Brittany ate a wonderful feat and strolled around the castle grounds. They knew that tomorrow there was no going back, but for tonight they were pretending everything was perfect. When they returned to the castle it was obvious that everyone was just as worried about tomorrow as they were. They were all on edge, even Kiba was more cautious than usual. "My Lord everything will be ready when you return. The clerics have been contacted and informed about what is going to happen. We have also started to bring out and ready the armor and weapons we have left from the great battle."
"I thought you said that weapons were useless in battle." Brittany commented. Alex's eyes twinkled with new found knowledge as he responded.
"I said human weapons were useless. During the great war death was very common. One of the original demon Lord's servants was a very skilled blacksmith and used his talents wisely. Using the bones from the fallen demons he created armor and weapons that were beyond compare. I had forgotten all about his creations because after the war they were all either destroyed or they were sealed away. Zanatos didn't want any of those weapons used against him when he assumed total control." Alex looked over at Kiba with a wide smirk spanning his lips. "I seem to recall a dispute between Zanatos and a certain Lord of the wolf demons regarding the destruction of their weapons."
"Aye my Lord. I wasn't about to give up the weapons and armor that cost so many of my fellow demons their lives to make. Now it seems that decision might just work out to our benefit." Kiba replied slyly.
"So we're going to have an advantage against Zanatos's army?" Brittany asked excitedly.
"Well he definitely won't be expecting it. Using the armor and weapons will give us a big advantage, but I'm not sure it will be enough. I seriously doubt that the weapons alone will ensure our victory. Still, it will help." Alex offered. After a brief moment of silence Alex sighed and slumped against the wall. "Now that that's covered why don't we get some rest. Tomorrow's going to come way too early and I don't feel like getting crispy fried by Brittany because she didn't get enough sleep." Kiba laughed at the comment and Brittany playfully slapped Alex on the shoulder.
"Maybe I wouldn't be so sleep if you didn't keep me up all night!" Brittany chastised, causing Kiba to start laughing harder.
"That's funny I don't recall you every complaining when I do." Alex teased. Kiba couldn't take it anymore and halted their argument while wiping tears from his eyes from laughing so hard.
"Alright you two settle down. Mates shouldn't be at each other's throats like this. Both of you go to bed and get some sleep." Kiba ordered. "And by that I mean don't have too much fun. Tomorrow you will need your wits about you."
"Heh, you've got a point." Alex admitted. He stood up and playfully put his arm around Brittany's waist. Before she realized what was happening Alex effortlessly picked her up and started carrying her bridal style towards their bedroom.
"Hey!" Brittany objected.
"Goodnight Kiba, I'll see you bright and early." Alex called back as he continued carrying Brittany towards their room. Brittany finally gave in and waved back to Kiba as she snuggled her head on Alex's shoulder.
"So tomorrow's the big day. We finally set out to go see the mages." Brittany said softly.
"Don't worry, we'll be fine." Alex offered.
"Who said I was worried?"
"I can sense what you are feeling remember. There's no need to hide your worry either. It's only natural to fear the unknown."
"Why can't I sense any fear coming from you then?"
"Simple I can control my fear better than you. Also, this is not an unknown to me. I've been to this place many times before, and I have a good feeling about everything. In other words I'm used to risking my life it comes with the job."
"Alex I want you to promise me something okay."
"Heh, for you anything."
"I'm serious Alex." Brittany said. Her voice full of fear and her face paled slightly as she spoke. Alex instantly became serious and nodded quickly.
"Of course, what is it?"
"I want you to promise me that if everything goes okay, and if you do succeed in defeating Zanatos. If everything works out, I want you to quite risking your life. You don?t know what it feels like to see the person you love drenched in their own blood. It nearly tears me apart every time I see you use a spell or every time you get hurt because I know I can only heal you so much. I can tell that the more injuries you sustained the longer it takes your healing factor to heal you. Pretty soon you won't be able to heal yourself at all and my ability to heal if very limited. I love you Alex, and I could never live with myself if you were to get killed."
"Brittany, you know what I am. You know who I am. As long as I'm alive there will always be those who try and harm me. There's no escaping danger in this realm."
"Then why don't we return to the human realm. We could be happy there. We wouldn't have to worry about being attacked or anything else. I wouldn't have to be afraid that every time you go out you might never return." Tears began to fall from Brittany's eyes as she said this. Alex opened up the door to their room and sat her on the edge of the bed. He kneeled before her and took her hands in his as he looked at her. It broke his heart to see so much pain in her heart caused by him.
"Brittany I do not belong in the human realm. That is not where I am supposed to be. You're right, I do not know what it feels like to see the person I love covered in their own blood. That however, is a fact that I am very glad of. I do know what it feels like to worry about the person you love and fearing that the next thing you say to them might be the very last time you will ever speak to them again. I do not want you to be unhappy, or for you to worry about me so much."
"You know I can't do that! Alex ever since I've arrived here it seems like one thing after another happens and each time you get hurt worse and worse."
"If I am right and if Alcadan is alive then he can remove my seal. If I can use my demonic powers again we'll never have to worry about either one of us dying. I will ensure that nothing will happen to you."
"Alex by now you should know that even you are not invincible in your demonic form."
"I know, but still...I may not be invincible, but it would help. Brittany I'm never going to leave you, nor do I plan on dying anytime soon. It would take a lot more than some mages and a few demon Lords to keep me from coming back to you."
"Alex...."
"Before you start yelling again there's something I want to give you."Alex said turning away from her and heading towards his bag that he had packed for their trip. Alex rummaged through it until he protracted something and clutched it tightly in his fist. When he returned Brittany looked at him with curiosity. Alex bit his lower lip in thought before deciding on what to do.
"Alex, what is this all about? What is it that you wanted to give me?" Brittany asked sensing that Alex might decide against it unless she prodded him.
Alex took a deep breath before starting. Alex loosed his grip on the item in his hand allowing a silver chain with a locket to reveal itself. Brittany gasped in awe as she stared at the beautiful necklace. The necklace was an almost white silver, and the locket had two intertwining circles on it forming the symbol of eternity. There was a small ruby in the middle where the two circles adjoined and an engraved cross set in behind the symbol. Brittany also noticed that there were several rune symbols all around the edges of the medallion barely visible unless you really looked at it. Brittany looked up at Alex expectantly, but she could see the hesitation in his presence.
"What's wrong? It's beautiful." Brittany said, believing that he might have thought that she didn't like it.
"It is." Alex said softly. "It was blessed by Alcadan, there is only one of this in the entire realm. This is one of set of seven magical items created by Alcadan for the original demon Lord. The other's were the mirror, the four crystals that enhanced the Lord's power, and a ring. All of which had magical properties, this item is no different."
"What does it do?"
"If someone gives this item to their mate, and their mate accepts the necklace becomes their bond. It will ensure that their liver are intertwined together for all eternity. That no matter what happens to them they will always be connected and will always be apart of each other. Their love will be eternal and they will always be together." Alex told her. Brittany was in awe that something as small as that really had the power to do all that Alex had told her. Alex could see her disbelief and continued. "Magic is not something that bound by mortal laws. Alcadan created this because he believed the original Lord should have a mate, needless to say it was never used. The spell can only be used once and no other spell can ever reverse its effects. Like I said, its eternal."
"Wow, I can't believe something like that really exists." Brittany stated, still in awe by all that she had heard.
"Yes, I want you to have this. I mean, that is if you want to." Alex offered hesitantly revealing to Brittany what he was really worried about. Brittany pulled her hair to one side and exposed her neck to Alex so he could place the necklace on her.
"Silly boy, did you really have to ask." Brittany said with a smile. Alex's face lit up in admiration as he moved over and clasped the locket into place. Brittany reached down and felt the cool metal in her hands. Alex placed his hand on top of hers causing the locket to glow brightly. Brittany saw the two circles glow and she heard a clinking sound come from the locket. Even though the locket itself quite glowing, the two circles glowed with a soft blue light.
"Heh, now your stuck with me." Alex whispered lovingly.
"You don't hear me complaining do you?" Brittany replied as she reached up and pulled him into her kiss. "Now, lets get to sleep before you get any ideas."

Author's Note: Okay, so maybe I won't have enough for fifteen chapters. So far in my actual story I've written five chapters. These two updates just covered the first of the five ^_^*, which isn't good. Still, let me know what you think okay? The next chapter is sort of a filler one, so not too much action, I'll post it tomorrow so you guy's can get through with it. Take care, reviews are highly appreciated, Bye.
